Orizaba Urban Design Plan, Timothy J. Kelly
Orizaba Urban Design Plan, Timothy J. Kelly
Master's Theses
The site area for the Orizaba Design District is located in central Long Beach, California. Historically the physical development of the area has been heavily influenced by the existence of the Pacific Electric Railroad, which has a right-of-way running diagonally through the site. With the existence of the railroads, as well as the Districts proximity to the Port of Long Beach and major thoroughfares, the area has developed as an industrial site.
Despite the industrial nature of the area, starting in 2007 a small group of creative business owners, including architects, graphic designers, interior designers, and others, started to locate …

Reflecting On Improving Our Practice: Using Collaboration As An Approach To Enhance First Year Transition In Higher Education, Sharn Donnison, Debra Edwards, Diane Itter, Dona Martin, Zali Yager
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper is concerned with teacher collaboration in Higher Education. Specifically, it focuses on how a ‘community of practice’ emerged and developed during the process of enhancing first year transition for pre-service teachers. It is written from the perspective of five teacher educators and is situated within the literature of the first year in higher education and teacher collaboration. In this paper we describe how the process of conceptualising an innovative first year teacher education program, designed to facilitate student retention and engagement, increased our own engagement, motivation and teaching practice. Our experiences suggest that collaboration in Higher Education is …

Green Local Governments In Florida: An Analysis Of Sustainability And Green Building Policies, Naimish S. Upadhyay
Green Local Governments In Florida: An Analysis Of Sustainability And Green Building Policies, Naimish S. Upadhyay
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Sustainable development is increasingly being integrated within local government planning across United States. Many communities are attempting to translate this general principle into specific and measurable terms. The urban sustainability planning literature has mostly focused on descriptive case studies of pioneering cities that have been characterized as true innovators in their sustainability efforts. Noticeably absent from the literature, however, has been an examination of the sustainable development claims made by local governments undergoing 'green' certifications. This study evaluates the commitment and efforts of municipalities and counties of Florida within the framework of Florida Green Building Coalition's 'Green …

Resilience And Renaissance: Efforts To Rebuild A Healthier New Orleans, Michele J. Orza, Jessamyn Taylor
National Health Policy Forum
The National Health Policy Forum sponsored a site visit to New Orleans, Louisiana, in May 2009 to explore the city's health challenges, which are similar to those faced by other cities but were all greatly exacerbated by Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. The agenda focused on three themes: primary care and behavioral health services availability and access, public health preparedness, and rebuilding healthier communities. It examined how these themes and others intersect in two distinct communities within New Orleans: the Holy Cross community surrounding the Lower Ninth Ward Center for Sustainable Engagement and Development and the community surrounding the Mary …
Attitude, Money, Or Administration? Barriers To Clean Energy Expansions In Kankakee, Illinois, Adrienne Martin
Attitude, Money, Or Administration? Barriers To Clean Energy Expansions In Kankakee, Illinois, Adrienne Martin
Capstone Projects – Politics and Government
The world faces an unprecedented level of environmental degradation. The United States, considered one of the main culprits of unsustainable resource consumption and the main manufacturer of the unsustainable “American” lifestyle, is experiencing a political, environmental and economic movement to re-habituate unsustainable resource consumption to encourage more conservative and sustainable growth. Since President Obama’s inauguration, mandates and incentives for clean energy programs have proliferated along with a mandate for behavioral change. American citizens and businesses, politicians argue, must change their unsustainable, excessive, individualistic, and wasteful lifestyles. This paper examines the current unsustainable behaviors of U.S. industries and current incentives for …

Rural Workers Would Benefit From Unemployment Insurance Modernization, Anne M. Shattuck
Carsey Publications
Rural workers stand to benefit from the modernization of unemployment insurance (UI) to cover part-time workers, which is an opportunity for states under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Plan (ARRA). Rural workers are more likely to work part-time, and many states that do not provide UI benefits to part-time workers have higher than average proportions of rural residents.

The Making Work Pay Tax Credit provides eligible U.S. workers with additional money in each paycheck throughout the year. The fact sheet shows that 78 percent of rural working families will receive the full amount of the credit, while an additional 10 percent of families will receive a partial credit due to low earnings or high earnings. These tax credits, along with the expansion to the Child Tax Credit, are an important financial boost to families in rural America, particularly low-income working families.

Delivering Interventions To Reduce The Global Burden Of Stillbirths: Improving Service Supply And Community Demand., Zulfiqar A Bhutta, Gary L Darmstadt, Rachel A Haws, Mohammad Yawar Yakoob, Joy E Lawn
Woman and Child Health
Background:Although a number of antenatal and intrapartum interventions have shown some evidence of impact on stillbirth incidence, much confusion surrounds ideal strategies for delivering these interventions within health systems, particularly in low-/middle-income countries where 98% of the world's stillbirths occur. Improving the uptake of quality antenatal and intrapartum care is critical for evidence-based interventions to generate an impact at the population level. This concluding paper of a series of papers reviewing the evidence for stillbirth interventions examines the evidence for community and health systems approaches to improve uptake and quality of antenatal and intrapartum care, and synthesises programme and …

Paid Sick Time Helps Workers Balance Work And Family, Kristin Smith
Paid Sick Time Helps Workers Balance Work And Family, Kristin Smith
Carsey Publications
In New Hampshire, workers fare better than workers nationally, yet one-quarter of Granite State workers do not have paid sick days. The lack of paid sick days places workers in a bind. They are forced to choose between caring for a sick family member or themselves and losing pay. This brief suggests that the long-term benefits of workers having paid sick days out way the cost for employers because it promotes less contagion among coworkers, increased productivity, and reduced turnover.

Designing A Village Water Supply System In Papua New Guinea: A Case Study In Third World Delopment, Barak Bruerd
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Papua New Guinea (PNG) is the second largest island in the world and one of the most biologically and culturally diverse nations on the planet. One of the last true stone age people, they are struggling with the delicate balance of entering the 21st century without losing their unique cultural heritage or devastating the fragile ecosystem they have lived in harmony with for thousands of years. Slow, careful steps are needed in order to ensure sustainable development; however the hardships of living close to nature - disease, drought, malnutrition, and lack of access to healthcare services, are causing Papua New …

Designed to create optimum levels of services, economic activity, and quality of life for residents and visitors, these statements are based on comprehensive research into existing community characteristics, anticipated opportunities, and public input. Guadalupe must be prepared to respond to the challenges and changes that projected population growth will bring, and this Plan can help guide that response. This Plan is both a statement of purpose and a decision‐making tool. As a statement of purpose, the Plan consists of the …
Growing Change: Local Foods Movements And The Emergence Of Global Social Change, Annie S. Virnig
Growing Change: Local Foods Movements And The Emergence Of Global Social Change, Annie S. Virnig
Political Science Honors Projects
Local foods movements increasingly emerge as social movements with the power to challenge global norms. This paper develops around the question: can local foods movements create holistic sustainability at the global level? I begin by analyzing impetuses behind contemporary local foods movements. I then evaluate sustainability in three case studies – Auroville, India; the Twin Cities, United States; and Southern Africa. I ultimately argue that local foods movements can create sustainable change if they: (1) develop organically within their locale, (2) account for ecological, social, and economic implications of their actions, and (3) build translocal connections across multiple geographic scales.

From Vice To Nice : A Case Study Of Newport, Kentucky's Hope Vi Program., Matthew Jude Hanka 1980-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the outcomes of the Housing Opportunities for People Everywhere (HOPE VI) program in one American city, Newport, Kentucky. HOPE VI also improved the quality of life and satisfaction of former public housing residents who participated in the Community and Supportive Services (CSS) program, the case management program of HOPE VI. HOPE VI neighborhoods in Newport have experienced higher increases in property values. The site of the old public housing in Newport has been cleared to make way for an $800 million-$1 billion investment over the next 10-15 years. The development will offer a first-class, mixed use development, …

A Place Like This: An Environmental Justice History Of The Owens Valley - Water In Indigenous, Colonial, And Manzanar Stories, Monica Embrey
Pomona Senior Theses
This text provides an environmental justice analysis of the stories of the people who lived in the Owens Valley, who watered its land and cultivated its crops—pine trees, apple trees, and kabocha alike. Telling the personal stories of challenge and resistance that manifested alongside the oppressive forces of military and state domination provides the opportunity to align forcibly relocated, exploited and incarcerated people’s struggles throughout time. This text starts with The Nü’ma Peoples who were the first humans to live in the Owens Valley and continues with the struggle for empire between rival colonial empires of agriculture and distant urban …
Searching For Patterns Of Discourse In A Sea Of Professional Development: Professional Learning And Teacher Discourse, Brian T. Whitney
Searching For Patterns Of Discourse In A Sea Of Professional Development: Professional Learning And Teacher Discourse, Brian T. Whitney
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Professional development, like a sea of changing tides, ebbs and flows through a myriad of professional trends. Some of these trends have disenfranchised teachers from the core of professional learning while others have empowered teachers to confront change with passion and courage. As collaboration continues to gain popularity as an empowering and effective route to professional learning, scrutinizing the effects of professional development on teacher discourse will ensure desired outcomes are achieved.
While collaboration holds the power to break down some of the isolation that exists in the teaching profession, talk alone, void of inquiry and reflection, will not necessarily …
Lines Of Nation, Lines Of Flight : Retroping Immigration Policy, Jessica Thaller
Lines Of Nation, Lines Of Flight : Retroping Immigration Policy, Jessica Thaller
Honors Theses
This thesis studies the rhetoric of U.S. immigration policy, specifically as related to Mexican immigration to the United States. Using Kent Ono and John Sloop’s theory of discourse, it examines the rhetoric employed in the Secure Fence Act (SFA) of 2006 and its turns towards wartime rhetoric, immigrant dehumanization, and immigrant deviance. It then contradicts these turns to those seen in the rhetoric of Hometown Associations (HTAs), “outlaw” discourses that operate by systems of logic different from the dominant logic of the SFA. HTAs emphasize family/cultural connections, unique financial considerations, and the liminal existence of the immigrant. More importantly, they …
