Health, Climate Change And Sustainability: A Systematic Review And Thematic Analysis Of The Literature., A. Nichols, V. Maynard, B. Goodman, J. Richardson

School of Nursing and Midwifery

BACKGROUND: Evidence of climate change and its impact continues to be accumulated, and it is argued that the consequences of climate change are likely to result in an increased demand on health services. It has been claimed that climate change presents new challenges for health services and that strategies should be adopted to address these challenges. AIM: The aim of this systematic review was to map published literature on health, climate change and sustainability by categorising papers according to their focus on effects, strategy and actions, and to provide a thematic analysis of their content. METHODS: Systematic searches were conducted …

Bridging Digital Poverty: Adoption Of Information And Communication Technologies At Community Technology Centers In The Dominican Republic, Paola Prado

Open Access Dissertations

Globalization and the rise of the Information Society pose many challenges to developing nations. In adherence to the Millennium Development Goal of digital inclusion, the government of the Dominican Republic established a national program of community technology centers, or telecenters, that aim to promote digital literacy among the poor. This study examined how these telecenters promote the adoption of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and tested whether perceived structural factors, individual motivation or demographics predict adoption. Results from a survey conducted in the rural villages of El Seybo, Navarrete, and Oviedo confirm that telecenter users learn how to use information …

Use Of Revised International Health Regulations During Influenza A (H1n1) Epidemic, 2009, Rebecca L. Katz

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Strong international health agreements and good planning created a structure and common procedure for nations involved in detection and evaluation of the emergence of influenza A (H1N1). This report describes a timeline of events that led to the determination of the epidemic as a public health emergency of international concern, following the agreed-upon procedures of the International Health Regulations. These events illustrate the need for sound international health agreements and should be a call to action for all nations to implement these agreements to the best of their abilities.

Hydraulic Modeling To Inform Stream Maintenance Practices In South Carolina, Kelly Owens Aug 2009

Hydraulic Modeling To Inform Stream Maintenance Practices In South Carolina, Kelly Owens

All Theses

The Crabtree Canal located in Horry County, SC is the main conveyor of stormwater in a watershed that has undergone considerable urbanization in the last few decades. Evidence of bank instability and inchannel erosion is widely seen in the Crabtree Canal system. Principal sediment inputs are landscape sources and in-channel sources. A study was initiated to provide a working management tool to determine hydrodynamic conditions on the watershed driven by a hypothetical storm event and alternative channel configurations. The management tool comprised of a one-dimensional HEC-RAS model of the Crabtree Canal and was developed to aid the Horry County stormwater …

Extension, The Land-Grant Mission, And Civic Agriculture: Cultivating Change, Kathryn Colasanti, Wynne Wright, Brenda Reau

Journal of Extension

Criticisms claiming the land-grant system has failed its mission and recent restructuring in the food system have together challenged the role played by Extension. This article explores whether a framework of southeast Michigan's Food System Economic Partnership (FSEP) fosters civic participation in the agrifood re-localization movement. Employing a case study approach, we discuss this framework and provide an overview of Extension educator involvement. Our case study indicates that the FSEP structure enables Extension professionals to expand their repertoire of community interaction models and engage citizens as agrifood citizens and leaders in order to move towards sustainable development.

Analysis Of Green Roof Growing Media Porosity, Kelsey Latshaw, Jay Fitzgerald, Richard Sutton Jul 2009

Analysis Of Green Roof Growing Media Porosity, Kelsey Latshaw, Jay Fitzgerald, Richard Sutton

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences

When selecting a growing media for a green roof, a rooftop environment should be distinguished from traditional plant settings. Therefore, it becomes critical that the media’s pore space allows for adequate storage and drainage of water. In this experiment, rooflite™, a certified green roof growing media, was tested at depths of 7.62 cm (3 in) and 10.16 cm (4 in), for drainage and water-holding capacity. The main objective of this analysis is to determine if these two depths will meet the manufacturer’s recorded values. The depths will also be compared in terms of porosity. When analyzing the results, it was …

An important non-point source pollution challenge facing municipal officials in southern Maine is the conversion of forested and undeveloped land to development (Krum & Feurt, 2002; Wells NERR, 2003; 2001). There is a critical need, during the next decade, to apply science-based knowledge and facilitate the adoption of practices associated with low impact development, protection of riparian buffers, preservation of wetlands and innovative stormwater management technology to land use decision-making. The science and technology that supports municipal efforts to preserve the ecological services provided by an undeveloped landscape as it is converted to what is considered economic use are the …

Constitutionalism, Legal Pluralism, And International Regimes, Alec Stone Sweet Jul 2009

Constitutionalism, Legal Pluralism, And International Regimes, Alec Stone Sweet

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

The international legal order, although pluralist in structure, is in the process of being constitutionalized. This article supports this claim in several different ways. In the Part L I argue that most accepted understandings of "constitution" would readily apply to at least some international regimes. In Part II,I discuss different notions of "constitutional pluralism," and demonstrate that legal pluralism is not necessarily antithetical to constitutionalism. In fact, one finds a great deal of constitutional pluralism within national legal orders in Europe. Part III puts forward an argument that the European Court of Justice, the European Court of Human Rights, and …

Stay Or Leave Coos County? Parents' Messages Matter, Corinna J. Tucker

Carsey Publications

When it comes to deciding whether to stay in New Hampshire's rural Coos County or leave for other opportunities, young people are listening to their parents. Surveying 78 percent of all seventh and eleventh graders in public schools in Coos County, researchers found that young peoples' future intentions to migrate from Coos in search of economic or educational opportunities or to remain in Coos to pursue a future close to home are closely aligned with the messages their parents deliver to them.

Emerging Opportunities For Responding To Climate Change In The Obama Administration : Why China Should Propel Developing Countries Towards Global Carbon Reduction Cooperation, Richard Ingwe, S. P. I. Agi, James Okoro

Conference on China and Global Climate Change : Reconciling International Fairness and Protection of the Atmospheric Commons

The use of diplomatic brinkmanship by the USA and her more recent uncooperativeness with global response to the climate crisis (Kyoto Protocol) under the presidencies of George W. Bush and Bill J. Clinton has led to fears in quarters that China, a rapidly industrialising country might opt to become uncooperative in the global climate change efforts. We use suitable conceptual frameworks of international relations to review the US’ previous conduct in international relations during the “cold war” among others to analyse recent issues pertaining to global carbon reduction under the Kyoto Protocol. We argue that China’s rising profile in economic, …

South Burlington Vt: New Urbanist South Village, Jack Kartez, Richard Barringer Jun 2009

South Burlington Vt: New Urbanist South Village, Jack Kartez, Richard Barringer

Planning

The 220 acre master plan for South Village, the largest project in the City of South Burlington’s history, encompasses multiple housing types and innovative provisions for affordable housing. It integrates housing with open space and natural resource conservation, including a major Community Supported Agriculture project developed by a nonprofit partner, the Intervale Foundation. While not a mixed-use project (that is, commercial as well as residential development), South Village nonetheless represents a qualitative change in approach for South Burlington by incorporating large-scale open space preservation as part of development and multiple housing-types in one project. The case study recounts events leading …

Sustainable Design: A Case Study In Energy Systems, Eugene Coyle, Marek Rebow Jun 2009

Sustainable Design: A Case Study In Energy Systems, Eugene Coyle, Marek Rebow

Books/Book chapters

Since the publication of the UN climate report in 2007, most countries now agree that recent climate change has occurred as a result of human intervention and that it will require fast and profound measures to reduce this negative imprint imposed upon nature. Central to this is the need to radically reduce CO2 emissions resulting from combustion of carbon-based energy resources to meet global energy demands. Greater measures must be taken to develop new non-combustion based technologies, in addition to using low-carbon energy resources. Increasing energy efficiency and using energy wisely will also feature in reducing emissions. Sustain-able Energy is …
