Relatedness As An Indicator Of Group Cohesion And Its Relationship To Outcomes Of A Group-Based Cbsm Intervention For Women Who Have Completed Treatment For Breast Cancer, Maria Del Rosario Morillo-Falero

Open Access Dissertations

Group delivered empirically supported therapies have been reported to have beneficial effects for cancer patients. However, little is known about the relationship between group cohesion and outcomes of these interventions. This study tested the hypothesis that group cohesion relates to the effects of a group intervention. Participants included 56 women with Stage I to II breast cancer who had completed a 10-week CBSM intervention 3 to 12 months after undergoing surgery and adjuvant therapy. Groups of 3 - 5 participants met weekly for sessions of approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes duration. All participants were assessed at baseline (2 weeks …

An Evaluation Of A Curriculum For Basic Training In Tesol, Gordon Travis Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

A formal evaluation of BYU's Basic Training in TESOL course shows the strengths and weaknesses of the curriculum of this course. Interns take this course in preparation for international internships where they may be asked to teach English. However, the interns are generally not seeking majors or even minors in TESOL. Furthermore, most interns are not seeking any teaching major. Internship locations vary throughout the world and include, but are not limited to the following regions: Central and South America, Africa, Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. This MA curriculum evaluation project reports findings of a formal evaluation of …

Multiple Perspectives On Mixing Methods: A Review Of Bergman’S Advances In Mixed Methods Research: Theory And Applications, Nisaratana Sangasubana Aug 2009

Multiple Perspectives On Mixing Methods: A Review Of Bergman’S Advances In Mixed Methods Research: Theory And Applications, Nisaratana Sangasubana

The Qualitative Report

More books on mixed methods research have been published recently. One notable contribution to this growing body of work is Bergman’s 2008 Advances in Mixed Methods Research: Theories and Applications. This edited work features contributions by different researchers and addresses a myriad of issues ranging from the need to re-conceptualize the paradigmatic differences between qualitative and quantitative approaches to methodological issues and challenges. This book should prove useful to researchers and graduate students interested in mixed methods designs.

River Features Associated With Chinook Salmon Spawning Habitat In Southwest Alaska, Deena M. Jallen

Fisheries

Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) is a highly valued traditional, subsistence, and commercial resource in Southwest Alaska. Stream habitat availability is a major component influencing salmon productivity. The objective of this study is to identify river features associated with spawning habitat, and describe upper and lower boundaries of chinook salmon spawning on the Tuluksak River. River distances, elevation, salmon locations, spawning sites, and habitat observations were collected along 75 river kilometers of the Tuluksak River primarily within the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. Habitat and salmon observations were grouped into strata along the length of the river for comparison and analysis. …

Political Dominance And Economic Performance:The Case Of The American States, Rita Ray

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation contributes the literature by developing a new method of measuring political dominance combining the legislative and executive branches in bi-party political system and by investigating the effect of political dominance on economic performance using panel data for forty-six states of United States for the period 1937-1996. Economic performance is measured by the relative level of per-capita personal income and growth of per-capita personal income. This dissertation finds that political dominance has significant negative effects on the level of relative per-capita personal income and on the growth of per-capita personal income. Youth And Savings In Assetsafrica, Gina A. N. Chowa, David Ansong Aug 2009

Youth And Savings In Assetsafrica, Gina A. N. Chowa, David Ansong

Center for Social Development Research

As youth transition to adulthood, their ability to save and accumulate assets becomes very important as they begin to accept financial responsibilities and plan for the future. In this paper, we investigated the effects of an asset building intervention on youth asset accumulation in Masindi, a rural area in Uganda. Two waves of data were collected on youth, between 15 and 35 years of age, for both the treatment and comparison groups. We used a Propensity Score Matching (PSM) technique and Difference-in-Difference model to estimate the effects of the asset building intervention. We find that the mean difference in financial …

Healing Relationships And The Existential Philosophy Of Martin Buber, John G. Scott, Kurt C. Stange, Benjamin F. Crabtree Aug 2009

Healing Relationships And The Existential Philosophy Of Martin Buber, John G. Scott, Kurt C. Stange, Benjamin F. Crabtree

Faculty Scholarship

The dominant unspoken philosophical basis of medical care in the United States is a form of Cartesian reductionism that views the body as a machine and medical professionals as technicians whose job is to repair that machine. The purpose of this paper is to advocate for an alternative philosophy of medicine based on the concept of healing relationships between clinicians and patients. This is accomplished first by exploring the ethical and philosophical work of Pellegrino and Thomasma and then by connecting Martin Buber's philosophical work on the nature of relationships to an empirically derived model of the medical healing relationship. …

The Invisible Black Woman In The Title Ix Shuffle: An Empirical Analysis And Critical Examination Of Gender Equity Policy In Assessing Access And Participation Of Black And White High School Girls In Interscholastic Sports, Moneque Walker Pickett

Open Access Dissertations

There has been considerable progress in women's sport participation opportunities since the enactment of Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972. These opportunities have allowed women and girls to participate in sports at the primary and secondary school level, as well as at the collegiate level in considerable numbers. Institutions have been adding new, emerging, or growth sports to their sports lineup. Despite this progress, much remains to be done to achieve true equity in women's access to sports. Indeed, recent evidence suggests that women of color may not have benefited from the array of new sports and …

Bridging Digital Poverty: Adoption Of Information And Communication Technologies At Community Technology Centers In The Dominican Republic, Paola Prado

Open Access Dissertations

Globalization and the rise of the Information Society pose many challenges to developing nations. In adherence to the Millennium Development Goal of digital inclusion, the government of the Dominican Republic established a national program of community technology centers, or telecenters, that aim to promote digital literacy among the poor. This study examined how these telecenters promote the adoption of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and tested whether perceived structural factors, individual motivation or demographics predict adoption. Results from a survey conducted in the rural villages of El Seybo, Navarrete, and Oviedo confirm that telecenter users learn how to use information …

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ECONOMIC DEPRIVATION AND EMERGING INHIBITORY CONTROL IN YOUNG CHILDREN. Rachel S. Weston, David J. Bridgett, Linda C. Mayes. Yale Child Study Center, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. An extensive body of research has documented detrimental effects of growing up in poverty on children's global cognitive development, particularly when economic deprivation occurs in early childhood. However, little is known about the impact of poverty on children's component neurocognitive capacities. The prefrontal cortex is one brain region, responsible for the executive control functions, that has a prolonged period of postnatal development and therefore may be especially …
