A Deep South Suburb: The Republican Emergence In The Suburbs Of Birmingham Alabama, Benjamin W. Robbins Aug 2009

A Deep South Suburb: The Republican Emergence In The Suburbs Of Birmingham Alabama, Benjamin W. Robbins

Theses and Dissertations

In 1952, affluent white suburban citizens of Birmingham, Alabama voted overwhelmingly in support of Dwight D. Eisenhower. This thesis explores and examines why the emergence of a thriving suburban community that voted Republican occurred. This examination used a collection of numerous sources, primary and secondary. Newspapers served as the most important tool for discovering why the new suburbs aligned to Republicanism. The sources describe a suburban area that aligned with the Republican Party due to numerous reasons: race, Eisenhower’s popularity, the Cold War, and economic issues. Due to those reasons, the election of 1952 began to alter their society and …

A Repeat Photographic Study Of The Natchez Trace Parkway: Has The Design Intent Of The Trace Changed, Elizabeth Towers Ogletree Aug 2009

A Repeat Photographic Study Of The Natchez Trace Parkway: Has The Design Intent Of The Trace Changed, Elizabeth Towers Ogletree

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the Natchez Trace Parkway using the method of repeat photography to determine whether or not the design intent of the Trace has changed since its beginning. Based upon fifteen matched pairs of photographs, which are evaluated based on a content analysis matrix, the original design intent, recent design guidelines, and planned land use maps, the degree of change that has occurred along the Trace is measured. Time has wrought inevitable change along the Trace. The changes that have occurred indicate a further effort to preserve the original design intent of the Trace rather than a shifting of …

Catch-Related Attitudes Of Anglers And Implications For Fisheries Management, Susan F. Baker Aug 2009

Catch-Related Attitudes Of Anglers And Implications For Fisheries Management, Susan F. Baker

Theses and Dissertations

A catch-related attitude measurement scale is used for discerning an angler’s evaluation of catching fish in four constructs (catching something, catching numbers, catching large fish, and retaining fish) in two studies. The first study was of resident (in-state) and nonresident (out-of-state) anglers at Sardis and Grenada reservoirs and the second was of hand grabblers and rod and reel catfish anglers. In the first study at Sardis Reservoir, there were no differences in catch-related attitudes between groups. At Grenada Reservoir, there were differences between groups toward catching large fish and retaining fish. In the second study, hand grabblers had stronger attitudes …

The Virgin Of Guadalupe Comes To Mississippi: Social Stressors And Ways Of Coping Among Hispanic Im/Migrants, Mary Rebecca Read Aug 2009

The Virgin Of Guadalupe Comes To Mississippi: Social Stressors And Ways Of Coping Among Hispanic Im/Migrants, Mary Rebecca Read

Theses and Dissertations

This mixed-methods study uses ritual analysis, key informant interviews, and a semi-structured questionnaire to explore stressors and coping among Hispanic im/migrants to rural Mississippi. The study applies Turner’s model of ritual analysis to the procession of la Virgen de Guadalupe for insight into the values, concerns, actions, and motivations of the community. Results from ritual analysis suggest the precession of la Virgen de Guadalupe unites the multi-national community and empowers the participants through their faith in God and la Virgen de Guadalupe. Results from the semi-structured questionnaire identify stressors among the Hispanic community relating to separation from family and friends, …

Effects Of Climate And Density On The Survival Of Whiteooted Mice (Peromyscus Leucopus), Eric Richard Wengert Aug 2009

Effects Of Climate And Density On The Survival Of Whiteooted Mice (Peromyscus Leucopus), Eric Richard Wengert

Theses and Dissertations

Short-lived rodents are sensitive to changes in environmental conditions and exhibit annual fluctuations under seasonal environments in northern temperate regions. I analyzed 34 years of monthly live-trapping data on whiteooted mice (Peromyscus leucopus) collected in Carter Woods, Ohio. I used a theoretic-information approach to select the best approximating models and analysis of deviance to infer effects of climate and density on survival of mice. I tested for a cost of reproduction to females and found no difference in survival between reproductive states. Directions and magnitudes of effects of climate and density varied over time. Increased variability in temperature reduced effects …

Ethnicity And Academic Achievement By Malaysian Eighth Grade Students, Hui Peng Liew Aug 2009

Ethnicity And Academic Achievement By Malaysian Eighth Grade Students, Hui Peng Liew

Theses and Dissertations

Malaysia’s preferential policies have reduced the educational attainment gap between ethnic groups. However, we know less about their effects on ethnic differences in academic achievement. With this point in mind, the overall goal of this study is to examine inter-ethnic differences in mathematics and science achievement based on the cohort of eighth grade (Form 2) Malaysian students who participated in the Third International Mathematics and Sciences Study Repeat Project (TIMMS-R). It sought to determine the extent to which theoretical propositions of the structural and cultural perspectives developed to explain achievement differences in the United States are applicable in Malaysia. Malaysia …

Walking On The Wild Side: An Examination Of A Long-Distance Hiking Subculture, Kristi Mcleod Fondren Aug 2009

Walking On The Wild Side: An Examination Of A Long-Distance Hiking Subculture, Kristi Mcleod Fondren

Theses and Dissertations

A great deal of previous sociological research has examined the social contours of subcultures, focusing either on highly transient subcultures (e.g., among youth) or, conversely, stable institutionalized subcultures (e.g., among professionals). More recent scholarship has examined how leisure subcultures are formed and sustained around a particular interest or activity (e.g., windsurfing). However, little attention has been paid to the role of recreational settings (i.e., specific geographical locales) in the formation of leisure subcultures. Using the Appalachian Trail as a case study, I aim to fill that gap by examining a long-distance hiking subculture. I use ethnographic data collected from long-distance …

Mobility And Population Change In Northeast Mississippi: An Object-Based Seriation Of Projectile Points As A Relative Paleodemographic Indicator, Jason L. Edmonds Aug 2009

Mobility And Population Change In Northeast Mississippi: An Object-Based Seriation Of Projectile Points As A Relative Paleodemographic Indicator, Jason L. Edmonds

Theses and Dissertations

Archaeological considerations of mobility have primarily focused on the differences in and among the kinds or degrees of mobility itself, rather than addressing the underlying issue of why human settlement patterns were or are mobile. The focus of this study is to address such questions within Darwinian evolutionary theory. Using the concepts of bet-hedging, as used in biology, and waste, as used in archaeology, it is argued that mobility was selectively favored for its population limiting properties. Relative changes in the numbers of projectile points in each assigned class, ordered chronologically by seriation, were taken to indicate relative population change …

Privacy And Geospatial Technologies, Lynn F. Brien Aug 2009

Privacy And Geospatial Technologies, Lynn F. Brien

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This research examines the role of geospatial and ancillary technologies in the erosion of privacy in contemporary society. The development of Remote Sensing, GIS, and GPS technologies are explored as a means of understanding both their current and predicted uses and capabilities. Examination is also made of the legal basis and current status of privacy rights in the United States. Finally, current and predicted uses and capabilities of geospatial and ancillary technologies are critically examined in light of existing privacy protections as a means of determining the ways in which these technologies are impacting privacy currently and what their effects …

Face-Work Within Blogs: The Use And Modification Of Real World Rituals Within A Virtual Setting, Matthew Leblanc Aug 2009

Face-Work Within Blogs: The Use And Modification Of Real World Rituals Within A Virtual Setting, Matthew Leblanc

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In his Essay "On Face-Work" Erving Goffman identifies the rules for a number of face-to-face interaction rituals. Among these rituals are two ways of correcting participants within an interaction. The first correction ritual, the interchange, allows offending interactants a chance to save face. The second ritual, the points making game, is a way for interactants to cause other participants to lose face. This thesis analyzes the content of a random sample of blogs to see if the rituals described above are employed in online interaction, specifically looking at blogs and how the context of the rituals is modified, including whether …

Gender At Work: The Role Of Habitus And Gender-Performance In Service Industry Occupations, Laura Dean-Shapiro Aug 2009

Gender At Work: The Role Of Habitus And Gender-Performance In Service Industry Occupations, Laura Dean-Shapiro

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the relationship between gender roles and habitus in service industry occupations. It draws primarily from the works of Pierre Bourdieu and Judith Butler. Data includes an exploratory focus group, non-participant observations and interviews with women currently or formerly employed as bartenders, bar backs, servers, or hostesses. The main themes that emerged included how habitus is affected by views of employment, drug and alcohol use, the naturalization of gender roles, and the effect of appearance standards. This study supports previous feminist works that posit that gender as a performance, not a biological trait. Further this performance is used …

American Anti-Welfare Right-Wing Populism: The Case Of Bucktown, Matt S. Landry Aug 2009

American Anti-Welfare Right-Wing Populism: The Case Of Bucktown, Matt S. Landry

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Is there support for voluntary sterilization incentives in the U.S.? Nine semi-structured interviews were conducted with a snowball sample of four families spanning three generations in Bucktown, a 95% white, middle-class neighborhood which sent David Duke, former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, to the Louisiana House of Representatives in 1989. Interviews explain support and opposition to current Louisiana State Representative John LaBruzzo's policy suggestion to "end generational welfare" by offering citizens $1000 in exchange for having their fallopian tubes tied or receiving vasectomies. Most respondents expressed that the sterilization proposal was targeted at low-income blacks. Although work ethic …

Does Corporate Social Responsibility Affect The Performance Of Firms?, Sergio Vergalli, Laura Poddi Aug 2009

Does Corporate Social Responsibility Affect The Performance Of Firms?, Sergio Vergalli, Laura Poddi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Over the last two decades in OECD countries increasingly more firms are certifying as Socially Responsible (CSR is the acronym for Corporate Social Responsibility). This kind of certification is assigned by private companies that guarantee that a certain firm’s behaviour is environmentally and sociologically correct. Some papers (including Preston and O’Bannon, 1997; Waddock and Graves, 1997; McWilliams and Sieger, 2001; Ullman, 1985) tried to establish if there exists a link between Social Responsibility certification and the performance of firms. Their results were ambiguous and did not show any common connection. This ambiguity depends mainly on the static nature of their …

Education, Reputation Or Network? Evidence From Italy On Migrant Workers Employability, Massimiliano Mazzanti, Susanna Mancinelli, Giovanni Ponti, Nora Piva Aug 2009

Education, Reputation Or Network? Evidence From Italy On Migrant Workers Employability, Massimiliano Mazzanti, Susanna Mancinelli, Giovanni Ponti, Nora Piva

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The strong adverse selection that immigrants face in hosting labour markets may induce them to adopt some behaviours or signals to modify employers’ beliefs. Relevant mechanisms for reaching this purpose are personal reputation; exploiting ethnic networks deeply-rooted in the hosting country; and high educational levels used as an indirect signal of productivity. On this last point, the immigrant status needs a stronger signal compared to that necessary for a local worker, and this may lead the immigrant to accept job qualifications which are lower than those achievable through the embodied educational level. This could explain the over education problem that …

Resources: Theory, John Neff Aug 2009

Resources: Theory, John Neff

Research Files of Dr. John Neff

We are, all of us, people of memory. Our daily lives are shaped by our individual and collective past. What is new and novel is interpreted through a filter made up of previous experience and recollection. How we think about ourselves and our world today is inextricably linked to how we have thought about ourselves and our world. We are not imprisoned by our memory, but neither can we be completely free of its influence. It is always with us, helping us make sense of things: our feelings of progress or inertia, our sense of newness or familiarity, our connections …

Rural Community Characteristics, Economic Hardship, And Peer And Parental Influences In Early Adolescent Alcohol Use, Laura De Haan, Tina Boljevac, Kurt Schaefer Aug 2009

Rural Community Characteristics, Economic Hardship, And Peer And Parental Influences In Early Adolescent Alcohol Use, Laura De Haan, Tina Boljevac, Kurt Schaefer

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The study explores how differences in rural community contexts relate to early adolescent alcohol use. Data were gathered from 1,424 adolescents in the sixth through eighth grades in 22 rural Northern Plains communities, as well as 790 adults, parents, teachers, and community leaders. Multilevel modeling analyses revealed that community supportiveness, as perceived by adolescents, but not adults, was associated with less lifetime and past month alcohol use, and for past month use, this relationship was stronger than perceived peer drinking or parental closeness. Perceived peer drinking and parental closeness were not associated with past month use. Adolescents experiencing family economic …

Perceptions Among Students In Online Health Related Courses - A Pilot Study, Kathy Sullivan Aug 2009

Perceptions Among Students In Online Health Related Courses - A Pilot Study, Kathy Sullivan

Master's Projects

Given the proliferation of online courses in university education, continuous evaluation is imperative to ensure quality. This study utilized a quantitative descriptive design using a questionnaire to explore the perceived adequacy and acceptance of distance learning in undergraduate health related courses. Questions were designed to elicit students' reactions to teaching methods, course content, and how the format influenced their learning. Overall, acceptance of online courses is high. Most of the students were willing to take another online course in the future. Respondents felt that online courses offer more flexibility, encourage both independent and critical thinking skills, and that the course …

Sexual Experience And Couple Formation Attitudes Among Emerging Adults, Brian J. Willoughby, Jason S. Carroll Aug 2009

Sexual Experience And Couple Formation Attitudes Among Emerging Adults, Brian J. Willoughby, Jason S. Carroll

Faculty Publications

In this study, we explore the relationship between attitudes toward both marriage and cohabitation and sexual experience during emerging adulthood. Results from 990 emerging adults indicated only moderate evidence that marital attitudes are related to sexual experience but strong evidence of a relationship between attitudes toward cohabitation and sexual experience. In particular, sexually active emerging adults were more likely to have positive attitudes toward cohabitation. Furthermore, it was found that both religiosity and dating status moderate the relationship between couple formation attitudes and sexual experience. For highly religious emerging adults, sexual activity was associated with higher endorsement of cohabitation; however, …
