Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

In this study, the authors furthered the research in this area using data from all 102 counties in Illinois. These data included measures of sociodemographic characteristics taken from the U.S. census, measures of methamphetamine production and use, and a measure of arrests for controlled-substance violations. Building A Meritocracy: The American Precedent For Wealth Redistribution, Micah D. Bobo Aug 2009

Building A Meritocracy: The American Precedent For Wealth Redistribution, Micah D. Bobo

Undergraduate Economic Review

This work investigates the use of wealth redistribution mechanisms in establishing and promoting meritocratic practices in early United States history. From the fifteenth to eighteenth century, the reward system used in exploration, colonization incentives, and land redistribution techniques are examined. During the eighteenth and nineteenth century, the effects of industrialization and education on social mobility are reviewed. Finally, the social and economic factors resulting in southern secession, particularly slavery, are examined. While the concept may be unpopular in modern society, wealth redistribution mechanisms were essential to cultivating merit-based social mobility and overall societal stability throughout the period covered.

Strategy And Power In Contemporary Clinical Practice : A Theoretical Examination Of Family Preservation Philosophy And Strategic Family Therapy In The Context Of Poverty, Emily Erchick

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical study reviewed family therapy and child welfare literature in the context of poverty. Clinical practice with low-income families was investigated historically. The literature brought to life issues of clinical power and aspects of social control and social reform inherent in direct practice. A consideration of family preservation philosophy and strategic family therapy was proposed. In describing these two schemas separately, their synthesis was eventually formulated and supported. The larger history of ideas that emerged yielded an epistemological discrepancy between models of practice in the field of family therapy. These discrepancies were further exaggerated by issues of policy, funding, …

The purpose of this study was to determine if having a parent, a grandparent, or both a parent and grandparent who were educators was a contributing factor for teachers in not only choosing education but also remaining in the profession long term. Global Constitutional Lawmaking, Sungjoon Cho Aug 2009

Global Constitutional Lawmaking, Sungjoon Cho

All Faculty Scholarship

Global Constitutional Lawmaking Abstract This article identifies a nascent phenomenon of “global constitutional lawmaking” in a recent WTO jurisprudence which struck down a certain calculative methodology (“zeroing”) in the antidumping area. The article interprets the Appellate Body’s uncharacteristic anti-zeroing hermeneutics, which departs from a traditional treaty interpretation under the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties and the past pro-zeroing GATT case law, as a “constitutional” turn of the WTO. The article argues that a positivist, inter-governmental mode of thinking, as is prevalent in other international organizations such as the United Nations, cannot fully expound this phenomenon. Critically, this turn …
