Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Synthetic biology has evolved from a set of engineering aspirations to an operationally sophisticated discipline, and artificial intelligence (AI) is its fastest-growing accelerant. This review traces that convergence across six interlocking domains: systems-level biological modeling, de novo protein engineering, metabolic and microbial programming, multi-omics data integration, regulatory element design, and clinical translation. For each domain, we survey established results, integrate findings from 2010–2026 literature, and articulate the trajectories that will define the next decade. Emerging themes include physics-informed neural networks for mechanistically constrained biological modeling, drug design, and federated learning architectures that allow global omics collaboration without centralizing sensitive data, …

An Emergent Seafood Nationalism Takes Hold In The United States, Owen Temby Jul 2026

An Emergent Seafood Nationalism Takes Hold In The United States, Owen Temby

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper introduces the concept of ‘seafood nationalism’ to describe how, since 2024–2025, the United States increasingly uses tariffs, trade remedies, food safety enforcement and origin-based rules to favour American seafood over foreign products. Federal actions include Executive Order 14276, Restoring American Seafood Competitiveness, which directs agencies to address unfair trade practices, unsafe imports and to develop a coordinated seafood trade strategy. Additional measures include a tariff package imposing a 10% duty on nearly all seafood imports and 30% on seafood from China, as well as new anti-dumping and countervailing duty orders on warm-water shrimp. This paper presents Gulf …

Offshore Philanthropy: A Critical Look At Family Offices Using Hybrid Trusts, Hang Wu Tang Jul 2026

Offshore Philanthropy: A Critical Look At Family Offices Using Hybrid Trusts, Hang Wu Tang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Family offices manage substantial wealth and often undertake philanthropic initiatives as part of their broader objectives. These offices may assume a variety of legal forms, ranging from corporations, partnerships, trusts administered by private trust companies or a combination of these forms. This article is concerned with family offices which use trusts administered by private trust companies in offshore jurisdictions. In response to competition for global wealth, several offshore jurisdictions have enacted trust laws that relax traditional doctrinal constraints to accommodate the needs of family offices. These include the creation of discretionary trusts for hybrid purposes in perpetuity ie trusts that …

When Neighborhoods Change, So Do Schools: Gentrification’S Influence On Public Education, Diego Ramirez Jul 2026

When Neighborhoods Change, So Do Schools: Gentrification’S Influence On Public Education, Diego Ramirez

Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University

Neighborhood change is a common feature in urban life; however, gentrification is a distinct form of urban transformation characterized by rising property values, reinvestment, and shifts in neighborhood socioeconomic makeup. This literature review investigates the mechanisms through which gentrification reshapes public education and argues that gentrification has a direct impact on public schools, as these institutions reflect the socioeconomic communities around them. As neighborhoods gentrify and class demographics shift, education systems struggle to meet the demands of changing student populations, leading to unequal educational experiences. Specifically, this literature review demonstrates how gentrification reshapes public education through changes in school enrollment, …

What’S Kept, Caitlin Smith Jul 2026

What’S Kept, Caitlin Smith

Theses

This thesis examines the collective psychological aftermath of de-industrialization in a rust belt city, processed through perspectives of nostalgia and betrayal. By reframing childhood memories of instability and inherited narratives, a framework is established for investigating the modalities through which love and attachment may obscure entangled harm, and how grief operates across both collective and personal registers. Found objects are situated as sites of projection where memories are abstracted and reconstituted. The processes of decay and weathering serve as analogues for psychological trauma, reframing deterioration as an inevitable and generative condition. Natural elements act as metaphors for neutrality, challenging imposed …

Reforming Mediation: The Hidden Inequities Shaped By Race, Gender, And Power, Victoria Seever Jul 2026

Reforming Mediation: The Hidden Inequities Shaped By Race, Gender, And Power, Victoria Seever

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Courts and policymakers often promote family dispute resolution as a faster, less adversarial alternative to traditional litigation. Yet for many women of color, the mediation table often replicates the same racial and gender power imbalances that the legal system claims to mitigate. Family Dispute Resolution (“FDR”) often fails women of color by reinforcing racialized and gendered power imbalances. Alternative dispute resolution (“ADR”), especially mediation, presents both an opportunity and a risk in divorce, custody, and intimate partner violence (“IPV”) cases. IPV cases become especially difficult with the various laws in different states that govern how mediation should be used and …

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Low enrollment and retention in clinical research disproportionately impact Black, Hispanic or Latinx, women, and rural populations, undermining generalizability and perpetuating health disparities. However, few studies have compared mechanisms driving underrepresentation across populations. Freelisting is a qualitative methodology that elicits lists of terms, explores perspectives about domains, and identifies common themes within groups with shared characteristics; however, it has not been systematically applied to understand research participation across underrepresented populations.

OBJECTIVE: To explore perspectives on clinical research participation across underrepresented populations using freelisting methodology to ultimately inform culturally-responsive recruitment strategies.

METHODS: We conducted a web-based freelisting survey among adults …

Teaching A Stand-Alone Course On Burney, Lorna J. Clark Jun 2026

Teaching A Stand-Alone Course On Burney, Lorna J. Clark

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

This essay outlines a stand-alone course on Frances Burney, suggesting that she offers a good entry point into eighteenth-century studies. Given that she wrote in so many genres—novels, plays, journals, and letters—such a course avoids the narrowness which often marks a single author course. In twelve weeks, the course studied ten works: four novels, five plays (three comedies and two tragedies) and a selection of journals and letters. The latter describes well-known figures in Burney’s social and literary networks in eighteenth-century London and leads to discussion of techniques of the epistolary, of diary-writing and of women’s life-writing. Burney’s novels are …

"I Don’T Know That You Can Do That Anywhere Else": The Role Rural College Towns Play In The Formation Of Queer Identity, Amy Mcdowell, Ryan J. Parsons, Julia Kraus Jun 2026

"I Don’T Know That You Can Do That Anywhere Else": The Role Rural College Towns Play In The Formation Of Queer Identity, Amy Mcdowell, Ryan J. Parsons, Julia Kraus

Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education

Challenging dominant narratives suggesting that rural spaces are inhospitable to LGBTQ+ identities, this study examines how queer individuals navigate space, rurality, and queerness in Oxford, Mississippi, a historically conservative college town. Drawing on oral histories from the Queer Mississippi digital archive, we argue that rural institutions of higher learning (rural IHLs) and the college towns they are embedded in serve as critical sites of queer identity formation. The rural college town provides a unique space where LGBTQ+ individuals from both within and outside the South navigate self-discovery, social networks, and belonging. We highlight the transformative role of these spaces in …

Aspirational Mirrors: A Conceptual Model Of Alumni-Led Near-Peer Outreach For Precollege Engagement In Ocean Engineering, Habibi Palippui, Juswan Sade Jun 2026

Aspirational Mirrors: A Conceptual Model Of Alumni-Led Near-Peer Outreach For Precollege Engagement In Ocean Engineering, Habibi Palippui, Juswan Sade

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Precollege students in Indonesia, especially in rural and coastal regions, often lack exposure to engineering disciplines due to social, geographic, and informational barriers. This essay proposes a conceptual model of alumni-led near-peer outreach as an affective and culturally grounded mechanism to engage high school students in ocean engineering. Drawing from theories of social similarity, possible selves, and engineering identity, the model conceptualizes alumni as “aspirational mirrors” who influence students not merely through information but also through identification. The model outlines four primary mechanisms—social connection, narrative engagement, aspirational mirroring, and early identity activation—and also accounts for contextual variables such as school …

A Crisis For Utopia: Jameson, The Collective, And The Future Of World Literature, Trevor Jackson Jun 2026

A Crisis For Utopia: Jameson, The Collective, And The Future Of World Literature, Trevor Jackson

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Working with Fredric Jameson’s influential discussions of utopia and world literature, the essay suggests that the prospect of utopia is frightening and also possibly boring insofar as it threatens to drain away the already waning possibility of experience in a postmodern, globalized world. In this world, resentment of the present seems to go hand in hand with a nostalgia for a fictitious past, underscoring the difficulty of conceptualizing new social, cultural, and economic arrangements. Viewing world literature as a possible source of a new utopian thought, a utopia unlimited to its contemporary dystopian guises, the essay retraces Jameson’s pronouncements on …

Against Pleonexia: Auerbach, World Literature, And The End Of History, Simon During Jun 2026

Against Pleonexia: Auerbach, World Literature, And The End Of History, Simon During

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Erich Auerbach’s essay on world literature, written in the early postwar period, has become central to our understanding of the field. This essay contextualizes Auerbach on world literature by approaching it through his larger project, which it thinks about in relation to scholars rarely considered in this context. These scholars are the French literary historians and critics Hippolyte Taine and Remy de Gourmont, and the German historical sociologist Alexander Rüstow. To place Auerbach at an intersection of these very different figures turns out to be illuminating. It both enlarges our sense of him and helps us better understand why he …

Small Nations, Big Debates: Empowering The Slovenes As A Subject Of World History In The Critical 1930s, Marko Juvan Jun 2026

Small Nations, Big Debates: Empowering The Slovenes As A Subject Of World History In The Critical 1930s, Marko Juvan

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

The article looks at how Slovene intellectuals and writers in the 1930s attempted to redefine the role of a small nation within the world-system in the face of global economic crisis, authoritarianism, imperialism, and the threat of fascist expansion. Three central interventions are examined in detail: firstly, Josip Vidmar’s culturalist defense of Slovenia as a nation defined by its intellectual and artistic achievements, which is contrasted with Edvard Kardelj’s Marxist reinterpretation of the Slovene national question as part of a broader anti-imperialist struggle; secondly, Anton Ocvirk’s peripheral model of comparative literary history, which emphasizes the creative contribution of small literatures …

Beyond The Great Wall: Zheng Zhenduo’S “Unification” Of World Literature At The Juncture Of China’S May Fourth And Post-World War I Era, Wenxin Liang Jun 2026

Beyond The Great Wall: Zheng Zhenduo’S “Unification” Of World Literature At The Juncture Of China’S May Fourth And Post-World War I Era, Wenxin Liang

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

This article examines Chinese literary scholar Zheng Zhenduo’s 1922 essay “A View on the Unification of Literature” (Wenxue de tongyiguan 文學的統一觀) as a counter-narrative to both imperial isolationism and post-World War I nationalist fragmentation. Writing at the intersection of China’s May Fourth Movement and the global post-war crisis, Zheng developed a theory of world literature that challenged both Goethean Eurocentrism and the compartmentalization of comparative literary studies. Through systematic analysis of Zheng’s theoretical writings, editorial projects, and pioneering work on folk literature (suwenxue 俗文學), this article demonstrates that Zheng’s project of “the unification of literature” operated on three …

This study analyzes the demographic transformation of the Saudi population in light of the sustained decline in fertility rates and the accompanying social and economic changes. The study adopts a quantitative analytical approach based on official national statistical data issued by the General Authority for Statistics and the Ministry of Health. A time-series analysis covering the period 2010–2022 is employed to examine fertility trends and their demographic implications. The study introduces a theoretical framework conceptualized as the recalibration of fertility in Saudi society to interpret the ongoing demographic shift. The findings indicate a steady decline in the total fertility rate …

Historicising Nyerere’S Presidency In The Nyakyusa Mythical Narratives, Ignas Fedeo Jun 2026

Historicising Nyerere’S Presidency In The Nyakyusa Mythical Narratives, Ignas Fedeo

Zamani: A Journal of African Historical Studies

Julius K Nyerere, the founding President of Tanzania, held office from 1962 to 1985. Much has been written about Nyerere's presidency, with the literature generally falling into two categories: strong advocacy for his decisions, actions, and ideas, and pointed criticism against him. Using narrative and new historicism theories, this article examines the recreation of the history of Nyerere’s presidency in local narratives, specifically Nyakyusa myths. The myths were collected using the oral history interviews from Kyela and Busokelo districts in Tanzania. The Nyakyusa believe that Nyerere was endowed with immense mystical powers, some of which embedded in his stick and …

Discourse Representation Of Self And Other In The 2020 Trump-Biden Presidential Debates, Victor Babajide Ogunleye, Adesina B. Sunday

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Presidential aspirants in the United States engage in debates during campaigns as a medium of enlightening the electorate. Existing studies on the American presidential debates have largely focused on politeness, rhetoric, syntax, and gender, with little attention to the strategies employed to construct the self and opponent(s). Therefore, this research investigates the discourse representation in the presidential debates between Trump and Biden using van Dijk’s socio-cognitive model of critical discourse analysis. Ten excerpts were purposively selected for their relevance in illustrating representation strategies. The analysis revealed positive self-representation and negative other-representation. Positive self-representation featured the self as competent, honest, altruistic, …

Context-Specific Legitimacy In English Language Teaching: Rethinking Nativeness In The Korean Efl Context, Kenn Arcenal, Teri An Joy G. Magpale Jun 2026

Context-Specific Legitimacy In English Language Teaching: Rethinking Nativeness In The Korean Efl Context, Kenn Arcenal, Teri An Joy G. Magpale

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Although non-native English-speaking teachers now make up the majority of the global ELT workforce, perceived nativeness continues to function as an enduring filter in hiring and evaluation. This perspective paper examines how that filter operates unevenly across the institutional sectors of South Korea’s EFL labor market, arguing that Filipino English Teachers (FETs) face a distributive rather than a uniformly ideological inequity, with the biggest disadvantage concentrated in commercially driven private academies. Drawing on two companion studies of FETs working across Korean academic sectors (Magpale & Arcenal, 2025, in press) and integrating more recent scholarship on native-speakerism with comparative evidence from …

Combination Of Using Chatgpt And Quizlet To Learn Vocabulary: A Study Of Learners’ Perceptions, Uyên Tràn Như Lê, Huyen Diem Bich Bui

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Although vocabulary learning is essential for reading comprehension, many students encounter challenges in personalizing their learning due to limited access to supportive tools or techniques. The integration of digital learning platforms and artificial intelligence (AI) offers new possibilities for addressing this issue. The combination of Quizlet and ChatGPT 5.0 (free version) provides a promising solution for vocabulary learning. However, there remains limited research, especially in Vietnam, on how students perceive AI-assisted vocabulary learning. This study examines how 107 pre-intermediate-level non-majors at a university in Ho Chi Minh City perceive the combination of Chat GPT and Quizlet for vocabulary learning in …

Trauma-Informed Esl Ecology: Centering Teacher Well-Being, Equity, And Structural Responsibility In Adult Esl Classrooms, Ghenwa Nasreddine, Heejin Song Jun 2026

Trauma-Informed Esl Ecology: Centering Teacher Well-Being, Equity, And Structural Responsibility In Adult Esl Classrooms, Ghenwa Nasreddine, Heejin Song

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Government-funded adult English as a second language (ESL) programs in Anglophone countries increasingly encounter students with histories of trauma, displacement, and structural adversity due to existing and emerging geopolitical conflicts and unsettling sociopolitical realities. These conditions shaping English language teaching (ELT) inevitably influence learners’ cognitive and emotional engagement in language learning, as well as their relationships with teachers and peers. Despite burgeoning literature on trauma-informed practice in ELT, significant gaps remain regarding teacher preparedness, professional development, and institutional support structures to enact trauma-informed pedagogies in linguistically and culturally diverse adult ESL classrooms. Drawing on a critical review of recent scholarship …

Still Chilly? Intersecting Inequalities In The Hidden Curriculum Faced By Female Medical Students, Hsing-Chen Yang

Journal of Medical Education

Background: Feminist scholars have used the term ``chilly classroom'' to describe the marginalization of women in higher education. The present study investigated female medical students' experiences with and strategies for coping with the chilly classroom in the ``hidden curriculum'' of unspoken gender and class norms.
Methods: Qualitative semistructured interviews were conducted with 20 female medical students (Years 1–6) of a Taiwanese university; the interviews were recorded, and the transcripts were subjected to thematic analysis.
Results: Three themes emerged from the interviews: (1) culture of hierarchical interactions, (2) family privilege and exclusive access to resources, and (3) gender discrimination and perpetuation …

A Case Study Of Sport And Racism In Australia: A Qualitative Document Analysis, Vegneskumar Maniam, Kristy O’Neill Jun 2026

A Case Study Of Sport And Racism In Australia: A Qualitative Document Analysis, Vegneskumar Maniam, Kristy O’Neill

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Australia is well known as a ‘sporting nation’ with outstanding elite sporting achievements and grassroots-level sports participation. The reality for Australia’s First Nations people and those from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds, however, tends to differ from the mainstream Australian population. One of the contributing factors being argued within this paper is the prevalence of historical and contemporary racism in Australian sport. This study focuses on four of Australia’s most popular community-participation sports, including Australian Rules Football (ARF), Cricket, Netball, and Swimming. Using a Qualitative Document Analysis method, this research investigates both primary and secondary sources for instances of …

A Tale Of Two Policy Regimes: A Comparative Analysis Of Migrants’ School-To-Work Transition In Hong Kong And Taiwan, Pakorn Phalapong Jun 2026

A Tale Of Two Policy Regimes: A Comparative Analysis Of Migrants’ School-To-Work Transition In Hong Kong And Taiwan, Pakorn Phalapong

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Foreign professionals have been frequently viewed as a remedy for labor shortages and as catalysts for economic development, prompting many governments—including Hong Kong and Taiwan—to facilitate their immigration for education and employment. Consequently, this study endeavors to identify a general pattern and plausible conditions that underpin the promotion of school-to-work transition policy regimes in a migration context. Using case-based analysis and the Most Different Systems Design (MDSD), secondary data were collected for the analysis. The findings reveal that, despite markedly differing political systems, both jurisdictions adopted a school-to-work policy regime in response to comparable conditions: the demographic changes, the influx …
