Stereotypes: Racism And Its Effects On The 2008 Presidential Election And Our Citizens, Mark Anthony Wheeler Jan 2009

Stereotypes: Racism And Its Effects On The 2008 Presidential Election And Our Citizens, Mark Anthony Wheeler

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

This is such a historic time in our country’s story, due to the reprieve from the usual choice of middle-aged White males in a presidential election. The make-up of candidates’ age, race, and sex in the 2008 primaries and general election, allowed the unique opportunity for multiple stereotypes to be engaged. This was an exploratory qualitative study, relying on descriptive data, participant observation during the general election campaign, and in-depth interviews (N=8) that happened within six months after the election of Barack H. Obama, first African-American elected president of the United States. The purpose of this study is to examine …

Multiple Role Transitions, Lena E. Ballard Jan 2009

Multiple Role Transitions, Lena E. Ballard

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Previous research has not addressed multiple role transitions for women; this is the purpose of this study. Women spend their days juggling multiple roles trying to do it all. Historically women’s roles have been that of housewife and mother. No longer is the women’s place only in the home. This research builds on the author’s earlier semi-structured qualitative research inquiry, finding that many women try to do it all even when they know they are suffering physically, mentally and spiritually (Addendum A). My present work, which is heuristic in nature, discusses what I discovered during a year of journaling. The …

The Invisiblity Of White Privilege, Michael T. King Jan 2009

The Invisiblity Of White Privilege, Michael T. King

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

People in our society can go through life without knowing about white privilege or realizing they themselves, may have this privilege. The white or lighter skin color of a person has automatic benefits, right from birth, them not ever having to do anything to attain this privilege. The consequences are mostly good and outweigh the bad, for the ones that have white privilege. However, skin that is not white has far more injustices, they are oppressed and they are the ones that suffer, not having this same privilege. This study will recognize awareness, barriers, and successful ways to treat people …

Problem Solving And Prevention By General-Jurisdiction Judges ©, Thomas D. Barton Jan 2009

Problem Solving And Prevention By General-Jurisdiction Judges ©, Thomas D. Barton

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

State court systems have done much in recent years to deepen their “problem-solving” qualities. Across the country, courts have adopted court-annexed mediation programs and developed a variety of specialty courts tailored to drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, mental health, homelessness, and sexual offenders. These innovations have broadened the scope in which legal problems are understood and deepened the level of engagement between legal system personnel and claimants/defendants. They have spawned thoughtful reflections by judges and lawyers about the impact and effectiveness of legal institutions and methods as exemplified by the Therapeutic Jurisprudence and Comprehensive Law movements.

“Preventive Law” could …

Social Work Theses - Archive

Conflict and violence have displaced many people around the world. Therefore, this paper explores the broader underlying risk factors that bring population to a vulnerable state of conflict related internal displacement. The possible root causes of conflict explored here are sustenance, degree of democracy, and global economic power status of countries. This methodology follows quantitative studies with dataset that comprises of the countries with conflict-induced internal displacement for 2007. The results of this analysis show that all three indicators are not appropriate measures to predict Internally Displaced Persons and that the global economic power status of the country is closer …

Hardiness And Homelessness: A Strengths-Based Perspective Of Service Use By Veterans Who Are Homeless, James C. Petrovich

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

The purpose of this study was to expand the current knowledge base regarding the use of services by veterans who are homeless. Informed by existing gaps in the scientific literature, it recruited a systematic sample from a low-demand urban shelter and applied a strengths-based perspective by evaluating whether the personality construct of hardiness predicted utilization of assistance services. It also utilized a group of non-veteran homeless men to serve as a comparison group on key variables including demographic characteristics, hardiness, service utilization, mental and physical health functioning, and history of substance abuse problems. Framed within the Behavioral Model of Health …

Phenomenological Psychological Autopsies: A Survivor Driven Model For Understanding Suicide, Elizabeth Ann Mitchell Jan 2009

Phenomenological Psychological Autopsies: A Survivor Driven Model For Understanding Suicide, Elizabeth Ann Mitchell

Social Work Theses - Archive

Over a million people worldwide die by suicide each year. 32,000 of these deaths occur in the United States. Strikingly, that number is miniscule in comparison to the 300,000 additionally recorded and 775,000 estimated non fatal attempts in that same year's time (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2008; Maris, Berman & Silverman, 2000). In 1999, suicide was recognized by the Surgeon General as a serious public health issue (Satcher, 2000). The purpose for this study was two-fold. First and foremost the effort was to increase knowledge about why people die by suicide. Secondly, the author hoped to assess the …

Access To Mental Health Care: Clients Perception Of Services Provided By Agape Clinic And Community Care, Erika Ruiz Jan 2009

Access To Mental Health Care: Clients Perception Of Services Provided By Agape Clinic And Community Care, Erika Ruiz

Social Work Theses - Archive

The purpose of this study was to identify whether there is a relationship between acculturation and utilization of mental health services among U.S. born and non-U.S. born Hispanics in the United States. Furthermore, the purpose of this study was to identify factors, which lead U.S. born and non -U.S. born Hispanics to seek and utilize mental health services. Findings suggest that there is no relationship between acculturation and the utilization of mental health services. A lack of resistance may be due to a need of education on mental health illnesses.
