A Scoping Review Of Gender-Based Violence Interventions Conducted In Afghanistan, Wahiba Abu-Ras, Basil H. Aboul-Enein, Patricia J. Kelly, Dilshod Achilov

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) remains one of the most pervasive human rights and public health challenges worldwide, with disproportionate impacts on women and girls in conflict-affected and fragile states. Afghanistan represents one of the most restrictive environments for women's rights, where structural, cultural, and political barriers severely limit the implementation and evaluation of GBV-prevention programs. This scoping review aims to identify and critically appraise GBV prevention and response interventions implemented in Afghanistan and assess their contribution to advancing gender and health equity.

METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines and the PICOS framework, nine databases were systematically searched for studies published between 2010 …

Spatial Narrative Beyond The Proscenium: Set Design As A Tool For Wellness, Christina Griffey Mar 2026

Spatial Narrative Beyond The Proscenium: Set Design As A Tool For Wellness, Christina Griffey

LSU Master's Theses

Inspired by a health crisis that led to spending time in medical settings, this thesis examines how our surroundings impact our well-being. By developing a framework that explores the topics of storytelling, space, place, theatre, and expanded scenography, I propose that set design can be used as a tool for wellness. I explore several disciplines through the lens of set design and highlight the disciplines, professionals, and designers that are contributing to the creation of therapeutic environments using scenographic practices.

I Never Would Have Expected It! Changing Perceptions Through Cross-Cultural Experiences, Jamia Thomas Richmond, Caroline Knight

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina

As the U.S. population continues to diversify, cross-cultural interactions are increasingly common. Preconceptions of other cultural groups influence those interactions. In this article, two teacher educators interview ten college students, discussing how experiences in a cross-cultural tutoring program changed their perceptions and beliefs about working with culturally diverse elementary students. The college students identify several aspects of the tutoring program impacting their overall educational experience.

An Intersectional Textual Analysis Of Lesbian Representation In Baka Bukas And Si Chedeng At Si Apple, Sofia Lorraine V. Dela Peña, Mikaela Zaira V. Aguilar, Belle Beatrix Alemania

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress Conference Proceedings

Media plays a crucial role in shaping public perceptions of gender and sexuality, yet representations of queer female characters in Philippine cinema remain underexplored. While portrayals of bakla characters have been widely studied, lesbian narratives often remain sidelined or framed through limited, stereotypical lenses. This research examines lesbian characters in the films Baka Bukas (2016) and Si Chedeng at Si Apple (2017), using Herman’s Narrative Framework and Intersectionality Theory. The study found that both films construct lesbian identities within specific socio-cultural contexts, revealing how queer women navigate visibility, relationships, and societal expectations in different ways. Baka Bukas emphasizes the quiet …

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress Conference Proceedings

This study examined Filipino parentification among eldest children enrolled as senior high school students at De La Salle University – Dasmariñas, focusing on its impact on friendships. Grounded in Role Theory, it explored how premature parental responsibilities shape social interactions using a qualitative phenomenological approach with semi-structured interviews. Findings indicate that eldest children often assume caregiving, emotional support, and decision-making roles, fostering maturity and resilience, but also leading to trust issues, emotional distancing, and difficulties in maintaining friendships. Certain individuals tend to adopt parental roles within friend groups, while some seek nurturing relationships akin to a ‘youngest’ sibling dynamic. Cultural …

Adequate Care Coordination Is Associated With Reduced Unmet Mental Health Needs For Children, Genevieve Graaf, Kristin Gigli, Phillip Hughes, Kathleen C. Thomas

Pharmacy Faculty Scholarship

Children with special healthcare needs (CSHCN), especially those with mental health needs, often receive services from multiple service sectors, including schools. Thus, care coordination may play a critical role in access to mental health care for these children. This cross-sectional study used multivariable logistic regression with pooled data from the National Survey of Children’s Health (2020–2023), focusing on a subsample of children with caregiver-reported mental health problems and a reported need for mental healthcare. We estimated the prevalence of parent-reported need for and receipt of effective care coordination and provider communication with schools. It also measures the association between parent-reported …

Clinicians’ Perceived Preparedness To Support Clients Who Have Co-Occurring Disorders, Jessica A. Love Jordan, Joseph Day

Journal of Applied Disciplines

Co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders are prevalent, yet many clinicians feel underprepared to provide integrated care for this population. This study explores the factors influencing clinicians' perceived preparedness and objective knowledge in treating clients with co-occurring disorders. Data were collected from 131 clinicians using the CODECAT EZ 2.0 and TIP ZIP assessments to evaluate their competence in co-occurring disorders treatment. Results indicate that while participants held positive attitudes toward integrated care, their practical knowledge and skills were often rated as average or below. Education, clinical experience, and continuing education were found to significantly influence both perceived preparedness and …

The Pedagogical Implications Of School Choice Initiatives In South Carolina, A. Scott Henderson

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina

School choice theory (SCT) is an important component of contemporary discussions about educational reform. For the past several years, South Carolina lawmakers have attempted to enact legislation based on SCT principles. These attempts, albeit unsuccessful, illustrate recurring concerns and suggest a need for teacher preparation programs to address more fully the pedagogical implications of school choice initiatives.

Getting involved in government advocacy work can be difficult for practitioners. We recognize that it is especially risky in this political climate to speak out about education issues and injustices that impact our students. With this in mind, this session will engage counselors, admissions staff, and community-based professionals in discussing ways to advocate for students on social justice issues and provide easy ways to connect with like-minded advocates and lawmakers to advance change.

Participants will be empowered through this session, which will discuss the following:

  1. How to safely engage in activism as a practitioner
  2. Ways to build a coalition with …

Civil Status, Single: The Emotional Experiences And Transformations Of Single Teenage Filipino Mothers Across Generations In Their Transition To Adulthood, Ana Sofia V. Collado, Gabrielle Lumongsod, Ramona Motos, Ysabel Ronquillo, Susan Grace Tana Neri

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress Conference Proceedings

Single teenage mothers in the Philippines face unique emotional and psychological challenges as they transition from adolescence to adulthood. These challenges often stem from societal stigma, guilt, and the loss of personal aspirations, which negatively affect their mental health and self-identity. Guided by Intersectionality theory, this study explores the emotional experiences of single teenage Filipino mothers, aiming to understand how early motherhood influences their emotional well-being, identity formation, and personal growth. Six Filipino women, aged 18 to 55, were purposively selected to provide a diverse range of generational perspectives. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and the data were analyzed using Braun …

Exploring The Intersection Of Faith, Empathy, And Healthcare Trust In The Experience Of Informal Caregivers, Dr. Julie Yonker, Elizabeth Yuniwo, Jamie Lee, Mesalenuo Tsurho, Meral Moawad, Toluwani Adekunle

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

  • Informal caregivers—adults providing unpaid medical or physical care to family or friends with adult-onset conditions—are essential yet often unrecognized contributors to U.S. health care.
  • One in four adults serve as caregivers, providing care valued at over $600 billion (AARP 2025).
  • Despite their vital role, many lack training, social support, and connection to professional care networks.
  • Public health professionals can promote sustainable, whole-person care by integrating caregiver training and referral systems into practice.

Problematizing The Critical Dimensions Of Whiteness With Educational Leaders, Lerita Yvette Cavness Mar 2026

Problematizing The Critical Dimensions Of Whiteness With Educational Leaders, Lerita Yvette Cavness

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This action research examines whether and how whiteness is “weaponized” by a P-12 educational leader, the impact whiteness has on their identities, and whether engagement with Critical Whiteness Studies (CWS) will increase pro-equity behaviors. The research employs a layered mixed-methods approach, and a deductive analysis triangulation plan framed by the Critical Dimensions of Whiteness Model (CDWM). This N-of-1 case study included a four-phase intervention workshop series and one post interview. The findings identify how one educational leader engaged in the selfweaponization of whiteness. The findings identify that CWS supported by the CDWM is a disruptive but healing path to awareness …

Exploring The Connection Between Cultural Humility And The Hexaco 60 Pi-R Among Licensed Professional Counselors In The United States, Debbie Franzen Franzen-Lang Mar 2026

Exploring The Connection Between Cultural Humility And The Hexaco 60 Pi-R Among Licensed Professional Counselors In The United States, Debbie Franzen Franzen-Lang

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Cultural humility is essential to effective counseling across diverse populations, yet its dispositional foundations remain unclear, limiting the development of evidence based, personality informed training strategies in counselor education. Grounded in Foronda’s Cultural Humility theory, this quantitative, nonexperimental study examined the relationship between personality traits and cultural humility among licensed professional counselors in the United States. The participants included 125 licensed professional counselors who completed the HEXACO PI R 60-item inventory and Foronda’s Cultural Humility Scale. The results of a multiple linear regression were statistically significant for the overall model, F(6,118) = 6.165, p < .001, R² = .239, accounting for 23.9% of the variance in cultural humility. Openness to experience was a significantly negative predictor (B = –.519, p < .001), indicating that higher openness scores were associated with lower cultural humility; honesty-humility was not statistically significant (p = .052), and the remaining traits also were not significant predictors. These findings complicate assumptions about the dispositional roots of cultural humility and suggest potential implications for counselor education, including experiential learning, reflective supervision, and skills-based training that may support cultural humility development. The results suggest that personality traits may play a role in cultural humility and may have implications for integrating personality-related insights into multicultural frameworks, conceptualizing humility as a dynamic construct influenced by both traits and context.

This qualitative study includes a force field analysis as part of a formative program needs assessment to explore human services professionals' perceptions of service needs, …

Teaching Evidence-Based Practice In Social Work: Practical Instructional Design Approaches For Graduate Students, Nicholas D. Bambach Mar 2026

Teaching Evidence-Based Practice In Social Work: Practical Instructional Design Approaches For Graduate Students, Nicholas D. Bambach

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

Across the social and health sciences, evidence-based practice (EBP) serves as a cornerstone of professional education and links research-based knowledge to real-world decision-making. Students are expected to integrate empirical findings with client needs, ethical considerations, and professional best practices. Yet many graduate students struggle to translate theoretical concepts into applied practice. Academic librarians, particularly those serving as subject liaisons and specialists, are well positioned to partner with social work faculty to design scaffolded instructional experiences that integrate research literacy with social work’s ethical and humanistic frameworks. Through librarian–faculty partnerships, librarians can help students critically engage with research evidence while honoring …

International College Athletes’ Perceptions Of Nil And Its Impact On Their Experiences: A Theory Of Capital Approach., Jessica K. Brougham, Rebecca M. Achen

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

The name, image, and likeness (NIL) policy altered the landscape of college sports and provided college athletes with new opportunities to monetize their talents and personal brands. However, while the NCAA stated that all athletes would be able to participate in NIL deals and be compensated for the use of their NIL, international college athletes (ICAs) soon discovered they were restricted from participation while located in the U.S., due to their student visa status. Through nine semi-structured interviews of current and former ICAs we identified themes related to Bourdieu’s theory of social capital and Bauder’s theory of citizenship capital that …

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

A significant increase in mental health concerns among college athletes has fueled interest in the impact of athletic identity on psychological outcomes. Research has produced mixed results regarding the association between athletic identity and mental health. This study sought to clarify this relationship and to improve our understanding of depression among NAIA college athletes, especially those who attach a great degree of importance and strength to the athlete’s role in relation to other activities. Voluntary college athletes aged 18-years-old or older and attending an NAIA member institution participated in the study (n = 361). They completed a web-based instrument that …

Justice-Involved Adults’ Perspectives On Multidisciplinary Treatment Teams During Community Re-Entry, Monique D. Brown Wellons Mar 2026

Justice-Involved Adults’ Perspectives On Multidisciplinary Treatment Teams During Community Re-Entry, Monique D. Brown Wellons

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Adults with mental illnesses have been disproportionately represented in the criminal justice system, often due to limited access to timely mental health treatment and fragmented community-based support. When continuity of care was inadequate, justice involvement frequently replaced coordinated interventions designed to promote stabilization and recovery. This qualitative study was guided by the sequential intercept model and the risk-need-responsivity model to examine how multidisciplinary treatment teams influenced rehabilitation and reoffending outcomes among formerly incarcerated adults diagnosed with mental illness. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with justice-involved adults who described their experiences with multidisciplinary support during their reentry process and analyzed …
