Formulating A Conceptual Base For Secondary Level Engineering: A Review And Synthesis, Rodney L. Custer, Jenny L. Daugherty, Joseph P. Meyer Jan 2009

Formulating A Conceptual Base For Secondary Level Engineering: A Review And Synthesis, Rodney L. Custer, Jenny L. Daugherty, Joseph P. Meyer

Reports of Center Studies

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education across the K-16 spectrum. While much of this interest has concentrated on science and mathematics, technology and engineering are emerging as authentic educational problem solving contexts, as well as disciplines in their own right at the K-12 level. Over the past 20 years, the technology education field has concentrated on defining and implementing a set of content standards, the Standards for Technological Literacy (ITEA, 2000) (STL), with mixed results. On a national scale, the field continues to evolve from its historical industrial arts …

Reviewing The Drivers And Challenges In Rfid Implementation In The Pharmaceutical Supply Chain, Mazen S. Matalka, John K. Visich, Suhong Li

Management Department Faculty Journal Articles

Counterfeiting is a global phenomenon that poses a serious financial threat to the pharmaceutical industry and more importantly jeopardizes public safety and security. Different measures, including new laws and regulations, have been put in place to mitigate the threat and tighten control in the pharmaceuticals supply chain. However, it appears that the most promising countermeasure is track-and-trace technology such as electronic-pedigree (E-pedigree) with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. In this study we present a framework exploring the antecedents and consequences of RFID applications in the pharmaceutical supply chain. The framework proposes that counterfeiting and E-pedigree regulation will drive the implementation …

Criminal Justice And The Public Imagination, Erik Luna Jan 2009

Criminal Justice And The Public Imagination, Erik Luna

Scholarly Articles

As this symposium demonstrates, criminology has much to offer criminal law and procedure. But there are limits to this endeavor, such as when public policy is distorted by powerful emotions that ignore the lessons of legal doctrine and social science. This article presents one possible response in such circumstances: expanding the interdisciplinary relationship to include literary and cultural materials usually associated with the humanities. These works can inspire the public imagination in ways that law and criminology cannot, at times offering an alternative narrative to counter emotion-driven claims of necessity, for instance, and raising the exact type of questions that …

Canada (En)Counters Terrorism: Us-Canada Relations And Counter-Terrorism Policy, Veronica Kitchen, Karthika Sasikumar Jan 2009

Canada (En)Counters Terrorism: Us-Canada Relations And Counter-Terrorism Policy, Veronica Kitchen, Karthika Sasikumar

Faculty Publications

This paper examines the role of identity in shaping counter-terrorism policy in Canada. We show that identity functions in three ways: constitutively by defining the range of choices a state is likely to consider; strategically by being a resource to buttress arguments based in economic or sovereignty interests; and heuristically by using identity as a marker for risk. This three-faceted explanation helps explain why, despite close economic, social, and political links between Canada and the United States which might lead us to expect Canada to follow American counter-terrorism policy, Canadian counter-terrorism policy often diverges from the American lead.

The Safety Of A Nation Versus The Rights Of Suspected Terrorists, Michaela Clark Jan 2009

The Safety Of A Nation Versus The Rights Of Suspected Terrorists, Michaela Clark

Undergraduate Review

On January twenty-second, 2009, newly elected President Barack Obama issued an executive order requiring the detention center holding alleged terrorists at Guantanamo Bay to be closed within one year. This proposal may potentially close a chapter on one of America’s most controversial efforts to combat terrorism. Throughout the Bush Administration’s “War on Terror” numerous laws were passed that gave the President and the Department of Defense power to determine who was an enemy combatant and detain indefinitely those they decided fit that profile. The issue of holding people the military deems a threat without giving them a traditional trial continues …

The Computer Fraud And Abuse Act: Reassessing The Damage Requirement, 27 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 279 (2009), Matthew Andris

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

This comment explores whether a civil plaintiff needs to claim actual damage to a protected computer to recover against a defendant under the CFAA. Several courts have noted that there is little case law regarding damages, and the case law that exists does not help define the reach of damages. Currently, courts are split as to whether a computer system needs to have actual physical damage in order for recovery under the CFAA. Additionally, courts have not adequately addressed how to assess damages, including whether damages may be aggregated across multiple computer systems. The Third, Fifth, and Ninth Circuit Courts …

Does Optimal Distinctiveness Contribute To Group Polarization?, Joo Hwan Lee Jan 2009

Does Optimal Distinctiveness Contribute To Group Polarization?, Joo Hwan Lee

ETD Archive

Group polarization occurs when group members have more extreme views after learning others in the group have similar attitudes. This effect has been found in numerous studies (e.g., Stoner, 1969 Mackie, 1986). Several theories, such as self-categorization theory and social comparison theory have been used to explain the phenomenon of group polarization. In the current research, an alternative framework based on optimal distinctiveness theory was proposed as a way to predict group polarization. This theory claims that individuals have two conflicting needs- the need to belong and the need to be distinct. When one of these needs is unmet, people …

"Reporters Gone Wild": Reporters And Their Critics On Hurricane Katrina, Gender, Race & Place, Steve Classen Jan 2009

"Reporters Gone Wild": Reporters And Their Critics On Hurricane Katrina, Gender, Race & Place, Steve Classen

The Journal of e-Media Studies

Catastrophe and Television in the Wake of Katrina: This essay offers a meta-critique of the televised cable news coverage of Hurricane Katrina, examining published evaluations of the reporting in the earliest hours of the disaster, with a particular focus on the moments in which normative network news practices and rituals "broke down." The critics of the Katrina coverage reiterate tensions between conflicting journalistic epistemologies, most clearly manifest in disagreements between reporters "on location" and network anchors in distant studios. In these public arguments, discourses of journalistic authority are tangibly challenged and the efficiencies of professionalized knowledge resisted by "senses of …

Functional Antimicrobial Surfaces By Ultrafine Powder Coating, Jarrod A.J. Shugg Jan 2009

Functional Antimicrobial Surfaces By Ultrafine Powder Coating, Jarrod A.J. Shugg

Digitized Theses

The modem era of technology has amplified the significance of coated materials as well as their potential relevance and opportunity. With microbial infection arising as one of North America’s biggest public concerns, by the ongoing spread o f harmful microorganisms, the need for a marketably simple and durable antimicrobial surface has arisen for applications including inanimate objects and/or biomaterials.

Antimicrobial surfaces cater to public safety by protection/prevention of infectious disease by the reduction of transmission of harmful microorganisms and the intervention of microorganism contamination. This study exhibits the development of various powder coating formulation efficacies against Escherichia coli and corresponding …
