A Social Marketing Intervention To Improve Asbestos Inspection Compliance For Missoula Public Buildings And The Role Of Upstream Approaches, Holly N. Truitt
A Social Marketing Intervention To Improve Asbestos Inspection Compliance For Missoula Public Buildings And The Role Of Upstream Approaches, Holly N. Truitt
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The Montana Department of Environmental Quality Asbestos Control Program reported in a 2002 study that it had determined that 99 percent of public building demolitions and renovations in Missoula were noncompliant with asbestos inspection regulations required by both Montana and federal law. The Program characterized noncompliance as an occupational and public health threat with multiple causations including willful noncompliance and ignorance of the law. Missoula is not alone in its noncompliance; Great Falls, MT, Boston, MA, Austin, TX and Livingston MT, and other cities have struggled to address noncompliance with asbestos inspections. My action based research project explores the role …

Age Estimation Of Fetal Skeletal Remains From The Forensic Context, Jennifer Ellen Sanders
Age Estimation Of Fetal Skeletal Remains From The Forensic Context, Jennifer Ellen Sanders
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This study tested the efficacy of the traditional method (Fazekas and Kosa, 1978) of aging fetal remains from the forensic context against ultrasound (Chevernak et al., 1998)and radiographic (Sherwood et al., 2000) methods to determine which was most accurate. Two data sets were used in this study. The first consisted of measurements from historic (1902-1917) fetal remains of known age. The second consisted of measurements from modern fetal remains of known age from the forensic context. Using these samples in the different prediction models for aging fetal remains, the accuracy of each was determined.
Native American Tourism In Montana, Vicki Ann Plemmons
Native American Tourism In Montana, Vicki Ann Plemmons
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This professional project is composed of three magazine articles on the topic of Native American tourism in Montana. The first article is about Blackfeet artist Leonda Fast Buffalo Horse, a successful porcupine quill artist over the past 15 years, and the prospect of cultural tourism in Browning. The second article explores three Native American groups and how they are using tourism to create changes on the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Reservations. The third article examines German tourists, the largest group of overseas visitors to Montana, and the irony as to why several groups are making a profit from the German …

© 2010 by Taylor and Francis Group, LLC. Less well studied, however, are the factors that shape elevational diversity gradients. Because many climatic factors vary systematically along elevational gradients, as they might along latitudinal gradients, elevational diversity gradients were thought to be miniature versions of latitudinal gradients (Körner, 2000). For example, Brown (1988) wrote, “Just as change of physical conditions with altitude resembles in many respects the variation with latitude, so the decreasing diversity of most organisms with increasing elevation mirrors in most respects the latitudinal gradient of species richness.” Stevens (1992) noted that, “Biologists have long recognized that elevational …
The Metaphysical Underpinnings Contemporary Attitudes In Consumerism: An Pontification?, Jason Stigliano
The Metaphysical Underpinnings Contemporary Attitudes In Consumerism: An Pontification?, Jason Stigliano
Honors Theses
Contemporary philosopher and activist, John Zerzan, critiques modern civilization, and then in hindsight the history of civilization, on two central grounds, which form the basis for the rest of his criticism and theory. Firstly, we are alienated from existence in as much as our experience is, in various ways, mediated rather than immediate. Through language (or symbolic thought), a sense of measured time, symbolic ritual, technology and all the other constituents of civilized culture, we become alienated. His ideal existence might be something like the state of animals as described by John Gardner in his novel Grendel, “he stares at …

The Effects Of Eating Behaviors And Exercise Patterns On The Processing Of Food And Exercise Related Stimuli, Carrie Potter
The Effects Of Eating Behaviors And Exercise Patterns On The Processing Of Food And Exercise Related Stimuli, Carrie Potter
Honors Theses
The effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for eating disorders has established a link between cognitive processes and unhealthy eating behaviors. However, the relationship between individual differences in unhealthy eating behaviors that are not related to clinical eating disorders, such as overeating and restrained eating, and the processing of food related verbal stimuli remains undetermined. Furthermore, the cognitive processes that promote unhealthy and healthy exercise patterns remain virtually unexplored by previous research. The present study compared individual differences in attitudes and behaviors around eating and exercise to responses to food and exercise-related words using a Lexical Decision Task (LDT). Participants …

Association Of Polymorphisms In The Intron 1 Of Duck Prolactin With Egg Performance, Hui Fang Li, Wen Qi Zhu, Kuan Wei Chen, Tang Jie Zhang, Wei Tao Song
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Gaoyou duck (Chinese indigenous breed) is famous for double-yolked egg. In the present study, SNP of prolactin (PRL) gene intron 1 of Gaoyou duck was detected by PCR-RFLP and DNA sequencing. The results indicated that there were 2 Dra I recognition sites in intron 1 of the PRL gene, but only 1 was of polymorphism. A T/C mutation at the position of the 1326 bp of the PRL gene was found by DNA sequencing, and resulted in 3 genotypes AA, AB, and BB. The frequencies of genotype BB and allele B were the highest. The association analysis between the polymorphism …

Fattening Costs Of Beef Breeds Reared Under Controlled Conditions And The Determination Of Optimum Fattening Period, Ahmet Şahi̇n, Bülent Mi̇ran, İbrahi̇m Yildirim, Alper Önenç, Ahmet Alçi̇çek
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The primary purpose of this study was to calculate the fattening costs of different cattle breeds reared under controlled conditions and to determine the optimal fattening period that will maximize the net profit. The data were from 21 bullocks consisting of 7 Holstein, 7 Piedmont × Holstein, and 7 Limousin × Holstein cross-breed cattle reared and fattened in the closed tie-stall experiment barns of the Aegean Agricultural Research Institute, Turkey. The data used for the analysis were from the year 1999, but were updated for 2007. The fattening period lasted 280 days, after a rearing period of 195 days. The …
Influence Of Music Tempo On Calorie Consumption In A Restaurant Setting, Rachel Rogers
Influence Of Music Tempo On Calorie Consumption In A Restaurant Setting, Rachel Rogers
Masters Theses
This study examined the difference of calories consumed by restaurant patrons while listening to fast and slow tempo music. Twenty-three participants ate 2 meals spaced 5 days apart, 1 meal was eaten while listening to slow tempo music and 1 meal was eaten while listening to fast tempo music. Foods were weighed before being served to participants and after participants were finished eating to determine calories consumed. On average, participants consumed more calories while listening to slow tempo music versus fast tempo music. Although the mean difference between the conditions was not significant, the data trends were congruent with the …

Participation And The Right To Health: Lessons From Indonesia, Sam F. Halabi
Participation And The Right To Health: Lessons From Indonesia, Sam F. Halabi
Faculty Publications
The right to participation is the “the right of rights” — the basic right of people to have a say in how decisions that affect their lives are made. All legally binding international human rights treaties explicitly recognize the essential role of participation in realizing fundamental human rights. While the substance of the human right to health has been extensively developed, the right to participation as one of its components has remained largely unexplored. Should rights-based health advocacy focus on participation because there is a relationship between an individual’s or a community’s active involvement in health care decision-making and the …
Cloned Meat, Voluntary Food Labeling, And Organic Oreos, Donna M. Byrne
Cloned Meat, Voluntary Food Labeling, And Organic Oreos, Donna M. Byrne
Faculty Scholarship
In December 2006, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it had reviewed all the available evidence and was poised to approve meat and milk from cloned animals and their progeny. Such products, said the FDA, are virtually identical to meat or milk from a non-clone. Further, the FDA announced it would almost certainly not require food from clones to be labeled as such. Part I of this article identifies three functions that labels perform, outlines the types of information usually required, and introduces the rule that voluntary label information cannot be misleading. Part II focuses on process information …
Today's Media Influences Are Associated With Preteen's Opinions And Attitudes Of Body Image, Jessica Graziano
Today's Media Influences Are Associated With Preteen's Opinions And Attitudes Of Body Image, Jessica Graziano
Honors Capstones
Today's media & societal opinions transform the way a 2009 preteen, 7-16 years of age, views his or her own body image. My goal was to find out precisely how drastically effected are the students at Huntley Middle School in DeKalb, Illinois. I conducted a self-administered questionnaire to two life skills classes of 18-22 students total. I questioned the students about their personal selections on magazines, television shows, celebrity idols, and their opinions on eating habits, physical activity, and body image. I found that these students at middle school are beginning to be affected by the subliminal messages. They are …
