Fit Camp A Behavioral Weight Loss Program The Effects Of Self-Monitoring, Social Support, Attendance, And Motivation, Erin Marie Murnan

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Almost half of Americans between 17 and 24 years of age are enrolled in higher education. College is an important life transition period when many young adults establish independence and adopt lasting behavior patterns, especially with regard to diet and physical activity. The first years of college are often associated with weight gain therefore making weight loss and weight gain prevention interventions necessary in this population. Behavioral weight loss programs (BWLP) have shown to be effective in adults, however, to our knowledge, there have been no reports of BWLP focused solely on college-aged young adults. This study compared a 10-week …

Much is already known about the function and functioning of the three genes that make up the SOS (Salt-Overly-Sensitive) pathway in plants, but recent studies indicate that the linkage between external increases in salinity and stress protection provided by genes SOS1, SOS2 and SOS3 is more complex than previously appreciated. It has recently been shown that the engineered reduced expression of the sodium/proton antiporter SOS1 affected several pathways indicating a role for SOS1 that exceeds its known function as an antiporter. Interference with expression of SOS1, characterized as a sodium/proton antiporter in the halophyte Thellungiella salsuginea converted Thellungiella into an …

Adipose Tissue Collagen Vi In Obesity, Magdalena Pasarica, Barbara Gowronska-Kozak, David Burk, Isabel Remedios, David Hymel, Jeff Gimble, Eric Ravussin, George A. Bray, Steven R. Smith Jan 2009

Adipose Tissue Collagen Vi In Obesity, Magdalena Pasarica, Barbara Gowronska-Kozak, David Burk, Isabel Remedios, David Hymel, Jeff Gimble, Eric Ravussin, George A. Bray, Steven R. Smith

Faculty Publications

Objectives: Basic science studies show that the extracellular matrix of adipose tissue, mainly represented by collagen VI, is dysfunctional in obesity and contributes to the development of the metabolic syndrome. We hypothesized in humans that increased collagen VI α3-subunit (COL6A3) mRNAis associated with adipose tissue macrophage chemotaxis and inflammation and that weight gain is accompanied by changes in the expression of COL6A3. Research Design and Methods: Adipose tissue biopsies were obtained from a cross-sectional study (n = 109), an overfeeding study (n = 9), and a pioglitazone treatment study (n = 14). Adipose tissue gene expression was measured by quantitative …

Obesity Management In Adults With Ckd, Holly Kramer, Katherine R. Tuttle, David Leehey, Amy Luke, Ramon Durazo-Arvizu, David Shoham, Richard Cooper, Srinvisan Beddhu

Faculty Publications

All adults, including those with and without CKD, should receive counseling on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, which includes a healthy diet, physical activity, and smoking cessation. In people with CKD who are overweight, but not obese, potential benefits of weight loss to the recommended "ideal" range are uncertain. Nevertheless, obesity is associated with increased inflammation, insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, and overweight adults with CKD should be counseled about the risks of weight gain. In persons with CKD and generalized or abdominal obesity, weight loss should be encouraged. For patients on dialysis therapy, survival can be greatly increased …

Background: The relation between variation in interindividual levels of energy expenditure and weight gain remains controversial. Objective: To determine whether or not components of the energy budget predict weight change, we conducted an international comparative study in 2 cohorts of women from sociocultural environments that give rise to the extremes of obesity prevalence. Design: This was a prospective study with energy expenditure measured at baseline and weight measured annually for 3 y. Participants included 149 women from rural Nigeria and 172 African American women. The energy budget was determined by using respiratory gas exchange and doubly labeled water. Main outcomes …

Reaction Of Potato Cultivars To Streptomyces Scabies, Causal Agent Of Deep Common Scab, Ivan Herman Fischer, Ana Paula Matoso Teixeira, Leonardo Toffano, Ely Oliveira Garcia

Faculty Publications

This work aimed to characterize the isolates of Streptomyces, responsible for deep common scab symptoms in potato, according to morphological and physiological criteria; to evaluate the resistance of potato cultivars to the disease and the aggressiveness of bacterium isolates. The Streptomyces isolates presented gray coloration on yeast extract and malt medium and spiral spore chains, produced on aerial hyphae. Production of melanina occurred in tirosine-agar medium and the utilization of eight recommended carbon sources. These properties correspond to the S. scabies species. Healthy potato seeds of six cultivars were planted in substratum infested with six isolates of S. scabies separately, …

Faculty Publications

Fishes of the genus Xiphophorus are well-studied biomedical research models, and some species, such as X. couchianus, are currently listed as endangered in the wild. Sperm cryopreservation in these live-bearing fishes has begun recently. Thus far, live young have been produced with cryopreserved sperm only in one species (Xiphophorus helleri). In this study, the goal was to develop a practical protocol for sperm cryopreservation of Xiphophorus couchianus, and to produce live young with cryopreserved sperm. Sperm were collected by crushing of testis in Hanks' balanced salt solution at an osmolality of 500 mOsmol/kg (HBSS500), and were cryopreserved with 14% glycerol …

Faculty Publications

Aquarium fishes are becoming increasingly important because of their value in biomedical research and the ornamental fish trade, and because many have become threatened or endangered in the wild. This review summarizes the current status of sperm cryopreservation in three fishes widely used in biomedical research: zebrafish, medaka, and live-bearing fishes of the genus Xiphophorus, and will focus on the needs and opportunities for future research and application of cryopreservation in aquarium fish. First, we summarize the basic biological characteristics regarding natural habitat, testis structure, spermatogenesis, sperm morphology, and sperm physiology. Second, we compare protocol development of sperm cryopreservation. Third, …

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

Medicinal plants represent alternative means for the treatment of several chronic diseases, including inflammation. The genus Ranunculus, a representative of the Ranunculaceae family, has been reported to possess anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antiviral, antibacterial, antiparasitic and antifungal activities, possibly due to the presence of anemonin and other. Different studies have shown the occurrence of unusual fatty acids (FAs) in Ranunculaceae; however, their therapeutic role has not been investigated. The purpose of this study is to characterize potential anti-inflammatory bioactivities in Ranunculus constantinopolitanus D'Urv., traditionally used in Eastern Mediterranean folk medicine.

Methods

The aerial part of R. constantinopolitanus was subjected to …

Best Practice Guideline For The Subcutaneous Administration Of Insulin In Adults With Type 2 Diabetes, Registered Nurses' Association Of Ontario

General Submissions: Community and Population-based Materials

The focus of this guideline is to support nurses, Registered Nurses (RNs) and Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) in all practice settings, as they care for clients (18 years and older) with type 2 diabetes requiring subcutaneous insulin therapy. Specifically, this guideline would assist nurses who are not specialists in diabetes care to safely initiate and administer insulin, a "high-alert" medication. This guideline will provide answers to the question: What are the essential client self-care components to be addressed by nurses when caring for an adult with type 2 diabetes who requires subcutaneous insulin?
