Educating Urban African American Children Placed At Risk: A Comparison Of Two Types Of Catholic Middle Schools, L. Mickey Fenzel, Janine Domingues
Journal of Catholic Education
Although the number of urban Catholic schools has declined in recent years, Nativity model middle schools, first developed by the Jesuits over 35 years ago, have appeared throughout the nation to address the need for effective alternative education for urban children placed at risk. The present study compares the effectiveness of two types of high-poverty Catholic schools for 322 African American middle school students. Result show that Nativity schools are more successful than traditional Catholic schools in effecting student gains in standardized test score performance. Results also suggest that features such as small school and class size, small student-teacher ratios, …

Bit Error Rates For Ultrafast Apd Based Optical Receivers: Exact And Large Deviation Based Asymptotic Approaches, Peng Sun, Majeed M. Hayat, Abhik K. Das
Bit Error Rates For Ultrafast Apd Based Optical Receivers: Exact And Large Deviation Based Asymptotic Approaches, Peng Sun, Majeed M. Hayat, Abhik K. Das
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Exact analysis as well as asymptotic analysis, based on large-deviation theory (LDT), are developed to compute the bit-error rate (BER) for ultrafast avalanche-photodiode (APD) based optical receivers assuming on-off keying and direct detection. The effects of intersymbol interference (ISI), resulting from the APD's stochastic avalanche buildup time, as well as the APD's dead space are both included in the analysis. ISI becomes a limiting factor as the transmission rate approaches the detector's bandwidth, in which case the bit duration becomes comparable to APD's avalanche buildup time. Further, the effect of dead space becomes significant in high-speed APDs that employ thin …
The Perceptions Of Student Teachers About The Effects Of Class Size With Regard To Effective Teaching Process, Melek Çakmak
The Perceptions Of Student Teachers About The Effects Of Class Size With Regard To Effective Teaching Process, Melek Çakmak
The Qualitative Report
The main purpose of this study was to determine student teachers' perceptions concerning the effects of class size with regard to the teaching process. A total of 41 fourth-year student teachers participated in the study. A questionnaire including open-ended items was used for data collection. The study revealed that there is a direct relationship between class size and motivation, teaching method used, classroom management, and assessment according to student teachers' views. Although carried with a small sample size, this study is expected to establish a firm basis for the future studies to contribute to teacher training programs, which enhance student …
Why We Teach: Autobiographies Of Traditionally And Alternatively Certified Pre-Service Social Studies Teachers, Susan Santoli
Why We Teach: Autobiographies Of Traditionally And Alternatively Certified Pre-Service Social Studies Teachers, Susan Santoli
The Qualitative Report
This study describes the analysis of the social studies autobiographies of 46 students compiled over a 15 month period. Two major questions were addressed: (1) what motivational patterns are revealed in these autobiographies and (2) what differences and similarities exist in the autobiographies of students seeking alternative and traditional certification. Both groups noted the influence of family and other significant adults, and the influence of social studies teachers, both K-12 and postsecondary, in their decisions to pursue social studies teaching careers. There were more similarities than differences between the two groups. The autobiographies echoed influences that are found in the …
The Proliferation Of Theoretical Paradigms Quandary: How One Novice Researcher Used Eclecticism As A Solution, David W. Stinson
The Proliferation Of Theoretical Paradigms Quandary: How One Novice Researcher Used Eclecticism As A Solution, David W. Stinson
The Qualitative Report
When a doctoral student plans to conduct qualitative education research, the aspect of the dissertation that often becomes problematic is determining which theoretical paradigm(s) might frame the study. In this article, the author discusses how he resolved the quandary through eclecticism. The author begins by describing briefly the purpose of his dissertation study, providing a justification for eclecticism in the selection of theories. He follows with a description of the three theories-poststructural theory, critical race theory, and critical theory-that framed his study and discusses briefly the methodology employed. The author concludes with a discussion of likely objections of his study …

Synthesis, Interdiction, And Protection Of Layered Networks, Kevin T. Kennedy
Theses and Dissertations
This research developed the foundation, theory, and framework for a set of analysis techniques to assist decision makers in analyzing questions regarding the synthesis, interdiction, and protection of infrastructure networks. This includes extension of traditional network interdiction to directly model nodal interdiction; new techniques to identify potential targets in social networks based on extensions of shortest path network interdiction; extension of traditional network interdiction to include layered network formulations; and develops models/techniques to design robust layered networks while considering trade-offs with cost. These approaches identify the maximum protection/disruption possible across layered networks with limited resources, find the most robust layered …
Changes In Structural Health Monitoring System Capability Due To Aircraft Environmental Factors, Jeffrey D. Kuhn
Changes In Structural Health Monitoring System Capability Due To Aircraft Environmental Factors, Jeffrey D. Kuhn
Theses and Dissertations
Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) promises to decrease the maintenance cost and increase the availability of aging aircraft fleets by fundamentally changing the way structural inspections are performed. But this promise can only be realized through the consistent and predictable performance of a SHM system throughout the entire remaining life of an aircraft. In a sensor-based SHM system, sensor signal changes are analyzed and interpreted to identify structural flaws. But aircraft environmental factors such as temperature fluctuations, cyclic strain and exposure to various aircraft fluids also have the potential to change SHM sensor signals, raising questions about long term SHM system …
The Navigation Potential Of Ground Feature Tracking, Guner Mutlu
The Navigation Potential Of Ground Feature Tracking, Guner Mutlu
Theses and Dissertations
This research effort examines the reduction of error in inertial navigation aided by vision. This is part of an effort focused on navigation in a GPS denied environment. The navigation concept examined here consists of two main steps. First, extract the position of a tracked ground object using vision and geo-locate it in 3 dimensional navigation frame. In this first step multiple positions of the UAV are assumed known; think of a synthetic aperture. The only information about the tracked ground objects/features is the unit vector that points to the objects from the center of the camera. Two such vectors …

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Current clinical therapy is focused on optimization of the acute/subacute intracerebral milieu, minimizing continued cell death, and subsequent intense rehabilitation to ameliorate the prolonged physical, cognitive, and psychosocial deficits that result from TBI. Adult progenitor (stem) cell therapies have shown promise in pre-clinical studies and remain a focus of intense scientific investigation. One of the fundamental challenges to successful translation of the large body of pre-clinical work is the delivery of progenitor cells to the target location/organ. Classically used vehicles such as intravenous and …
Stochastic Particle Acceleration In The Lobes Of Giant Radio Galaxies, Stephen O'Sullivan, Brian Reville, Andrew Taylor
Stochastic Particle Acceleration In The Lobes Of Giant Radio Galaxies, Stephen O'Sullivan, Brian Reville, Andrew Taylor
Articles
We investigate the acceleration of particles by Alfv ́en waves via the second-order Fermi process in the lobes of giant radio galaxies. Such sites are candidates for the accelerators of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR). We focus on the nearby Fanaroff–Riley type I radio galaxy Centaurus A. This is motivated by the coincidence of its position with the arrival direction of several of the highest energy Auger events. The conditions necessary for consistency with the acceleration time-scales predicted by quasi-linear theory are reviewed. Test particle calculations are performed in fields which guarantee electric fields with no component parallel to the local …
Using Dempster Shafer Theory Of Evidence For Situation Inference, Susan Mckeever, Juan Ye, Lorcan Coyle, Simon Dobson
Using Dempster Shafer Theory Of Evidence For Situation Inference, Susan Mckeever, Juan Ye, Lorcan Coyle, Simon Dobson
Conference papers
In the domain of ubiquitous computing, the ability to identify the occurrence of situations is a core function of being 'context- aware'. Given the uncertain nature of sensor information and inference rules, reasoning techniques that cater for uncertainty hold promise for enabling the inference process. In our work, we apply the Dempster Shafer theory of evidence to determine situation occurrence based on uncertain sensor data and inference rules. We also describe a set of evidential operations for sensor mass functions using context quality and evidence accumulation for temporal situation detection. We demonstrate how our approach enables situation inference with uncertain …

On Sequences Of Numbers And Polynomials Defined By Linear Recurrence Relations Of Order 2, Tian-Xiao He, Peter Shiue
On Sequences Of Numbers And Polynomials Defined By Linear Recurrence Relations Of Order 2, Tian-Xiao He, Peter Shiue
Scholarship
Here we present a new method to construct the explicit formula of a sequence of numbers and polynomials generated by a linear recurrence relation of order 2. The applications of the method to the Fibonacci and Lucas numbers, Chebyshev polynomials, the generalized Gegenbauer-Humbert polynomials are also discussed. The derived idea provides a generalmethod to construct identities of number or polynomial sequences defined by linear recurrence relations. The applications using the method to solve some algebraic and ordinary differential equations are presented.
Exact Inverse Schrodinger Scattering, Jonathan Blackledge
Exact Inverse Schrodinger Scattering, Jonathan Blackledge

The paper briefly reviews the principles of conditional forward and inverse Schrodinger scattering using Rutherford scattering as an example. An approach is considered which, in principle, provides an exact inverse scattering solution from which the scattered eld can be computed.
Self-Authentication Of Audio Signals By Chirp Coding, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle
Self-Authentication Of Audio Signals By Chirp Coding, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle
Conference papers
This paper discusses a new approach to ‘watermarking’ digital signals using linear frequency modulated or ‘chirp’ coding. The principles underlying this approach are based on the use of a matched filter to provide a reconstruction of a chirped code that is uniquely robust in the case of signals with very low signal-to-noise ratios. Chirp coding for authenticating data is generic in the sense that it can be used for a range of data types and applications (the authentication of speech and audio signals, for example). The theoretical and computational aspects of the matched filter and the properties of a chirp …

First Ligo Search For Gravitational Wave Bursts From Cosmic (Super)Strings, Benjamin P. Abbott, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We report on a matched-filter search for gravitational wave bursts from cosmic string cusps using LIGO data from the fourth science run (S4) which took place in February and March 2005. No gravitational waves were detected in 14.9 days of data from times when all three LIGO detectors were operating. We interpret the result in terms of a frequentist upper limit on the rate of gravitational wave bursts and use the limits on the rate to constrain the parameter space (string tension, reconnection probability, and loop sizes) of cosmic string models. Many grand unified theory-scale models (with string tension Gμ/c …

Search For Gravitational Wave Ringdowns From Perturbed Black Holes In Ligo S4 Data, Benjamin P. Abbott, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
According to general relativity a perturbed black hole will settle to a stationary configuration by the emission of gravitational radiation. Such a perturbation will occur, for example, in the coalescence of a black hole binary, following their inspiral and subsequent merger. At late times the waveform is a superposition of quasinormal modes, which we refer to as the ringdown. The dominant mode is expected to be the fundamental mode, l = m = 2. Since this is a well-known waveform, matched filtering can be implemented to search for this signal using LIGO data. We present a search for gravitational waves …

On The Transition Rate Of The Fe X Red Coronal Line, Gunter Brenner, Jose R. Crespo Lopez-Urrutia, Sven Bernitt, Daniel Fischer, Rainer Ginzel, Kai Uwe Kuhnel, Volkhard Mackel, Paul H. Mokler, Martin C. Simon, Joachim Hermann Ullrich
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present a lifetime measurement of the 3s 23p 5 2 Po 1/2 first excited fine-structure level of the ground state configuration in chlorine-like Fe X, which relaxes to the ground state through a magnetic dipole (M1) transition (the so-called red coronal line) with a wavelength accurately determined to 637.454(1) nm. Moreover, the Zeeman splitting of line was observed. The lifetime of 14.2(2) ms is the most precise one measured in the red wavelength region and agrees well with advanced theoretical predictions and an empirically scaled interpolation based on experimental values from the same isoelectronic sequence.
Nonperturbative Treatment Of Double Compton Backscattering In Intense Laser Fields, Erik Lotstedt, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Nonperturbative Treatment Of Double Compton Backscattering In Intense Laser Fields, Erik Lotstedt, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The emission of a pair of entangled photons by an electron in an intense laser field can be described by two-photon transitions of laser-dressed, relativistic Dirac-Volkov states. In the limit of a small laser field intensity, the two-photon transition amplitude approaches the result predicted by double Compton scattering theory. Multiexchange processes with the laser field, including a large number of exchanged laser photons, cannot be described without the fully relativistic Dirac-Volkov propagator. The nonperturbative treatment significantly alters theoretical predictions for future experiments of this kind. We quantify the degree of polarization correlation of the photons in the final state by …

Quantifying And Enforcing Two-Dimensional Symmetries In Scanning Probe Microscopy Images, Peter Moeck, Marius Toader, Mahmoud Abdel-Hafiez, Michael Hietschold
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
The overall performance and correctness of the calibration of all kinds of traditional scanning probe microscopes can be assessed in a fully quantitative way by means of “crystallographic” processing of their two-dimensional (2D) images from samples with 2D periodic (and preferably highly symmetric) features. This is because crystallographic image processing results in two residual indices that quantify by how much the symmetry in a corresponding scanning probe microscopy image deviates from the symmetries of the possible plane groups of the periodic features of the sample. When a most probable plane symmetry group has been identified on the basis of crystallographic …

Design And Applications Of Drilled Displacement (Screw) Piles, Prasenjit Basu, Monica Prezzi
Design And Applications Of Drilled Displacement (Screw) Piles, Prasenjit Basu, Monica Prezzi
JTRP Technical Reports
Drilled displacement (DD) piles (commonly known as „screw piles‟ in Europe) are being increasingly used as foundation elements for structures, particularly in projects requiring accelerated construction or involving the rehabilitation of foundations of existing, overstressed structures. Different types of DD piles are available in practice; each type is classified according to the design of the drilling tool and associated installation method. Installation of DD piles causes substantial changes in the state of the soil surrounding the pile. These changes result from the complex loading imposed on the soil by expansion of a cylindrical cavity to make room for the specially …

Marshallian Money, Welfare, And Side-Payments, Cheng-Zhong Qin, Lloyd S. Shapley, Martin Shubik
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
A link between a no-side-payment (NSP) market game and a side-payment (SP) market game can be established by introducing a sufficient amount of an ideal utility-money of constant marginal utility to all agents. At some point when there is “enough money” in the system, if it is “well distributed” the new game will be a SP game. This game can also be related to a pure NSP game where a set of default parameters have been introduced. These parameters play a role similar to the parameters specifying the interpersonal comparisons in the side-payment game. We study this game for the …
