Metal-Induced Bystander Effects: Mechanism And Implicationis., Nicola Cogan Sep 2009

Metal-Induced Bystander Effects: Mechanism And Implicationis., Nicola Cogan

Doctoral

The radiation-induced bystander effect is a phenomenon known to occur post irradiation, characterised by the induction of biological effects in unirradiated cells as a result of receiving signals from irradiated cells or their culture medium. Chemicalinduced bystander effects are poorly characterised and there are no reports of a bystander effect induced by metals. Heavy metals and in particular chromium (VI) are known to cause persistent genomic instability. For the first time, this study provides evidence that a short, low-dose exposure of human fibroblasts to chromium (VI) causes a bystander effect in human fibroblasts that persists for at least thirty days …

National Mine Action Strategy Of The Republic Of Croatia, Gichd

Global CWD Repository

In the course of mine action in the Republic of Croatia so far, the most important and most represented activity has been conducting humanitarian demining operations. Since the very beginning of systematic pursuit of demining problem area, the basic issue has always been the question of defining suspected hazardous area. True development of demining capacities starts with the establishment of the Croatian Mine Action Centre and amendments to the Law on Demining by which the market model was introduced.

The Use Of Economics Experiments To Understand Patent Licensing, Patent Challenging And Patent Litigation Behavior, Rita Abdelnour Sep 2009

The Use Of Economics Experiments To Understand Patent Licensing, Patent Challenging And Patent Litigation Behavior, Rita Abdelnour

Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The existing patent literature suggests that the patent breadth is an important factor in determining the innovator’s patent licensing and litigation behavior and that licensing a patent to a competitor is driven by profit. The present study develops two economics experiment to investigate these assumptions. First, a choice experiment is developed to investigate the patentee’s objective when licensing her innovation, by examining whether, when the decision to license is made, the patentee maximizes profits or her strategy is to maintain a dominant market position by controlling the largest market share. The results show that the assumptions of profit maximization and …

Effects Of Peanut Processing On Masticatory Performance During Variable Appetitive States., Fiona Mckiernan, Richard D. Mattes Sep 2009

Effects Of Peanut Processing On Masticatory Performance During Variable Appetitive States., Fiona Mckiernan, Richard D. Mattes

Department of Nutrition Science Faculty Publications

Background. Current evidence indicates that peanut consumption reduces cardiovascular disease risk, while posing little threat to positive energy balance. However, questions have been raised as to whether inter- and intraindividual variability in mastication in response to peanut form and processing properties may influence these health effects, since mastication has the potential to alter the bioaccessibility of nutrients within the nut matrix. Objective. To explore the relationship between peanut form and processing and masticatory function.Subjects/Methods. Thirty nine adults (16 M, 23 F; BMI:  kg/; age:  y) with healthy dentition chewed four different forms of peanuts until they would normally swallow and …

Detecting Automotive Exhaust Gas Based On Fuzzy Inference System, Li. Shujin, Ming Bai, Quan Wang, Bo Chen, Xiaobing Zhao, Ting Yang, Zhaoxia Wang Sep 2009

Detecting Automotive Exhaust Gas Based On Fuzzy Inference System, Li. Shujin, Ming Bai, Quan Wang, Bo Chen, Xiaobing Zhao, Ting Yang, Zhaoxia Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper proposes a method of detecting automotive exhaust gas based on fuzzy logic inference after analyzing the principle of the infrared automobile exhaust gas analyzer and the influence of the environmental temperature on analyzer. This paper analyses the measurement error caused by environmental temperature, and then makes a non-linear error correction of temperature for the infrared sensor using fuzzy inference. The results of simulation have clearly demonstrated that the proposed fuzzy compensation scheme is better than the non-fuzzy method.

Batch Mode Active Learning With Applications To Text Categorization And Image Retrieval, Steven C. H. Hoi, Rong Jin, Michael R. Lyu Sep 2009

Batch Mode Active Learning With Applications To Text Categorization And Image Retrieval, Steven C. H. Hoi, Rong Jin, Michael R. Lyu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Most machine learning tasks in data classification and information retrieval require manually labeled data examples in the training stage. The goal of active learning is to select the most informative examples for manual labeling in these learning tasks. Most of the previous studies in active learning have focused on selecting a single unlabeled example in each iteration. This could be inefficient, since the classification model has to be retrained for every acquired labeled example. It is also inappropriate for the setup of information retrieval tasks where the user's relevance feedback is often provided for the top K retrieved items. In …

A Latent Model For Visual Disambiguation Of Keyword-Based Image Search, Kong-Wah Wan, Ah-Hwee Tan, Joo-Hwee Lim, Liang-Tien Chia, Sujoy Roy Sep 2009

A Latent Model For Visual Disambiguation Of Keyword-Based Image Search, Kong-Wah Wan, Ah-Hwee Tan, Joo-Hwee Lim, Liang-Tien Chia, Sujoy Roy

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The problem of polysemy in keyword-based image search arises mainly from the inherent ambiguity in user queries. We propose a latent model based approach that resolves user search ambiguity by allowing sense specific diversity in search results. Given a query keyword and the images retrieved by issuing the query to an image search engine, we first learn a latent visual sense model of these polysemous images. Next, we use Wikipedia to disambiguate the word sense of the original query, and issue these Wiki-senses as new queries to retrieve sense specific images. A sense-specific image classifier is then learnt by combining …

Node Security In Hierarchical Sensor Networks: Distribution Of Functions Versus Keys, Biswajit Panja, Sanjay Madria Sep 2009

Node Security In Hierarchical Sensor Networks: Distribution Of Functions Versus Keys, Biswajit Panja, Sanjay Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Secure communication involving cluster heads in a sensor network is vital as they are responsible for data aggregation and for taking important decisions in their groups. in this article, we propose a scheme for secure communication via such nodes in a sensor network. in our approach, the base station provides a function to the cluster head of each group, which is used to compute the key for the secure communication with the base station. the protocol is first elucidated for a fixed cluster head in each group and later it is extended for dynamic cluster heads. Each function is computed …

Localized Matching Using Earth Mover's Distance Towards Discovery Of Common Patterns From Small Image Samples, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo Sep 2009

Localized Matching Using Earth Mover's Distance Towards Discovery Of Common Patterns From Small Image Samples, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper proposes a new approach for the discovery of common patterns in a small set of images by region matching. The issues in feature robustness, matching robustness and noise artifact are addressed to delve into the potential of using regions as the basic matching unit. We novelly employ the many-to-many (M2M) matching strategy, specifically with the Earth Mover's Distance (EMD), to increase resilience towards the structural inconsistency from improper region segmentation. However, the matching pattern of M2M is dispersed and unregulated in nature, leading to the challenges of mining a common pattern while identifying the underlying transformation. To avoid …

Kinematic And Photometric Evidence For A Bar In Ngc 2683, Stacy S. Mcgaugh Sep 2009

Kinematic And Photometric Evidence For A Bar In Ngc 2683, Stacy S. Mcgaugh

Faculty Scholarship

We present optical long-slit and SparsePak Integral Field Unit emission line spectroscopy along with optical broadband and near-IR images of the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 2683. We find a multi-valued, figure-of-eight velocity structure in the inner 45″ of the long-slit spectrum and twisted isovelocity contours in the velocity field. We also find, regardless of wavelength, that the galaxy isophotes are boxy. We argue that taken together, these kinematic and photometric features are evidence for the presence of a bar in NGC 2683. We use our data to constrain the orientation and strength of the bar.

Exploiting Set-Level Non-Uniformity Of Capacity Demand To Enhance Cmp Cooperative Caching, Dongyuan Zhan, Hong Jiang, Sharad C. Seth Sep 2009

Exploiting Set-Level Non-Uniformity Of Capacity Demand To Enhance Cmp Cooperative Caching, Dongyuan Zhan, Hong Jiang, Sharad C. Seth

School of Computing: Technical Reports

As the Memory Wall remains a bottleneck for Chip Multiprocessors (CMP), the effective management of CMP last level caches becomes of paramount importance in minimizing expensive off-chip memory accesses. For the CMPs with private last level caches, Cooperative Caching (CC) has been proposed to enable capacity sharing among private caches by spilling an evicted block from one cache to another. But this eviction-driven CC does not necessarily promote cache performance since it implicitly favors the applications full of block evictions regardless of their real capacity demand. The recent Dynamic Spill-Receive (DSR) paradigm improves cooperative caching by prioritizing applications with higher …

On The Issue Of Decoupled Decoding Of Codes Derived From Quaternion Orthogonal Designs, Tadeusz Wysocki, Beata Wysocki, Sarah Spence Adams Sep 2009

On The Issue Of Decoupled Decoding Of Codes Derived From Quaternion Orthogonal Designs, Tadeusz Wysocki, Beata Wysocki, Sarah Spence Adams

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

Quaternion orthogonal designs (QODs) have been previously introduced as a basis for orthogonal space-time polarization block codes (OSTPBCs). This note will serve to correct statements concerning the optimality of a decoupled maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding algorithm. It will be shown that when compared to coupled decoding, the decoupled decoding is only optimal in certain cases. This raises several open problems concerning the decoding of OSTPBCs.

Steady-Periodic Heating Of A Cylinder, Kevin D. Cole, Paul E. Crittenden Sep 2009

Steady-Periodic Heating Of A Cylinder, Kevin D. Cole, Paul E. Crittenden

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Steady periodic heating is an important experimental technique for measurement of thermal properties. In these methods the thermal properties are deduced from a systematic comparison between the data (such as temperature) and a detailed thermal model. This paper addresses steady-periodic heat transfer on cylindrical geometries with application to thermal-property measurements. The method of Green’s functions is used to provide a comprehensive collection of exact analytical expressions for temperature in cylinders. Five kinds of boundary conditions are treated for one-, two-, and three-dimensional geometries. For some geometries an alternate form of the Green’s function is given, which can be used for …

Comparison Of Rationally-Derived And Empirically-Derived Methods For Predicting Failure In Residential Treatment, Jennifer Pester Grattan Sep 2009

Comparison Of Rationally-Derived And Empirically-Derived Methods For Predicting Failure In Residential Treatment, Jennifer Pester Grattan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Patient-focused research methods have been used in adult mental health treatment to improve outcomes by tracking individual treatment response and comparing it with expected recovery patterns. One such approach has used rationally- and empirically-derived methods to analyze data from the OQ-45 and identify patients who are not responding as expected to treatment. Treatment is then adjusted, improving outcomes and lowering overall costs.

Similar but less extensive research has shown analogous methods can be used with children and adolescents. This would be particularly useful in residential treatment, which is an expensive and inadequately researched approach. This study used archival data gathered …

Computational Model Of Alendronate Effects On Canine Rib Remodeling And Microdamage, Emily Huang Sep 2009

Computational Model Of Alendronate Effects On Canine Rib Remodeling And Microdamage, Emily Huang

Master's Theses

Bisphosphonates are a class of drugs used to prevent and treat bone diseases by inhibiting the resorption of bone by osteoclasts and suppressing bone remodeling. Osteoporosis is a bone disease that develops when bone resorption exceeds bone formation which results in an increase in bone porosity and fracture risk. The risk for fractures can be reduced by increasing bone mass. Alendronate is type of bisphosphonate that is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis by suppressing basic multicellular unit (BMU) remodeling and increasing bone mass. The long term effects of bisphosphonates are still unclear due …

Investigation Of The Geotechnical Properties Of Municipal Solid Waste As A Function Of Placement Conditions, Wilson W. Wong Sep 2009

Investigation Of The Geotechnical Properties Of Municipal Solid Waste As A Function Of Placement Conditions, Wilson W. Wong

Master's Theses

An investigation of the variability of engineering properties of municipal solid waste as a function of placement conditions was conducted. Limited data have been reported for the engineering properties of municipal solid waste (MSW) as a function of placement conditions. Wastes have high variability of engineering properties due to heterogeneity in composition and component size; influence from time based effects; and presence of compressible solids. Control of moisture content of MSW at the time of waste placement provides opportunity for increased capacity at a given landfill site due to higher compacted unit weight as well as for control of other …

Solving Reverse Logistics: Optimizing Multi-Echelon Reverse Network, Jun Kim Sep 2009

Solving Reverse Logistics: Optimizing Multi-Echelon Reverse Network, Jun Kim

Master's Theses

As part of sustainable development initiative, product take-back strategy encourages manufacturers to transform definition of sustainability into business practices that would reduce environmental wastes, while reducing increasingly growing waste management cost from municipal governments. This thesis evaluates the complexity of reverse logistics with regards to product take-back strategy development and presents a programmatic approach of determining appropriate number and location of initial collection points that would reduce variable cost, while promoting more frequent product return. The application of this thesis would grant ‘green’ opportunities for organizations to strategize and execute cost-efficient reverse logistics to advance sustainability. A single-objective, mixed-integer, binary …

Neurodevelopmental Outcome & Mr Spectroscopy Of Therapeutic Hypothermia After Pediatric Drowning, Sharon Mieras Perugini Sep 2009

Neurodevelopmental Outcome & Mr Spectroscopy Of Therapeutic Hypothermia After Pediatric Drowning, Sharon Mieras Perugini

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Despite advances in medical treatment and technology, outcome following pediatric drowning can vary widely from mild to severe impairments and death. Prognosis is often difficult to predict given a number of contributing factors. As such, this study examined the relationship between clinical indicators including submersion duration, initial GCS and PRISM scores, and waking time with outcome as well as metabolite ratios based on magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Research stemming from the area of cardiac arrest as well as anecdotal case study reports of cold water drownings suggests that lowering the body temperature may be helpful and protective. As such, the use …

A Practical Approach To Disturbance Decoupling Control, Qing Zheng, Zhongzhou Chen, Zhiqiang Gao Sep 2009

A Practical Approach To Disturbance Decoupling Control, Qing Zheng, Zhongzhou Chen, Zhiqiang Gao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, a unique dynamic disturbance decoupling control (DDC) strategy, based on the active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) framework, is proposed for square multivariable systems. With the proposed method, it is shown that a largely unknown square multivariable system is readily decoupled by actively estimating and rejecting the effects of both the internal plant dynamics and external disturbances. By requiring as little information on plant model as possible, the intention is to make the new method practical. The stability analysis shows that both the estimation error and the closed-loop tracking error are bounded and the error upper bounds …

“More Than Measurable Human Products”: Catholic Educators’ Responses To The Educational Measurement Movement In The First Half Of The 20th Century, Ann Marie Ryan Sep 2009

“More Than Measurable Human Products”: Catholic Educators’ Responses To The Educational Measurement Movement In The First Half Of The 20th Century, Ann Marie Ryan

Journal of Catholic Education

During the first half of the 20th century, Catholic educators in the United States used theological arguments both to resist and embrace the progressive educational reform effort of educational measurement. The significant expansion of Catholic schooling and the increased number of students attending them, along with increased state oversight, led to a gradual, yet uneven, acceptance of educational measurement by Catholic educators. This partial and more critical acceptance can be attributed to the diversity of Catholic schooling and the incongruity between the assumptions of educational measurement and Catholic educational beliefs. This historical case offers support for continued critique of reform …
