Ergodic Capacity Of Cooperative Networks Using Adaptive Transmission And Selection Combining, Bao Q. Vo-Nguyen, Trung Q. Duong, Nguyen N. Tran Sep 2009

Ergodic Capacity Of Cooperative Networks Using Adaptive Transmission And Selection Combining, Bao Q. Vo-Nguyen, Trung Q. Duong, Nguyen N. Tran

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

Closed-form expressions for ergodic capacity of repetition-based cooperative networks under adaptive transmission with selection combining are derived. According to the changing channel conditions, the source adapts its rate and/or power level while the relays simply amplify and then forward the received signals. Specifically, three different adaptive techniques are investigated under the assumption of independent Rayleigh fading channels: optimal simultaneous power and rate adaptation (OPRA), constant power with optimal rate adaptation (OPA) and channel inversion with fixed rate (TIFR). Among them, for an arbitrary number of relays, TIFR gives the worst channel capacity; OPRA gives the best channel capacity and ORA …

Chemically Decorated Boron-Nitride Nanoribbons, Xiao-Jun Wu, Men-Hao Wu, Xiao Cheng Zeng Sep 2009

Chemically Decorated Boron-Nitride Nanoribbons, Xiao-Jun Wu, Men-Hao Wu, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Motivated by recent studies of graphenen nanoribbons (GNRs), we explored electronic properties of pure and chemically modified boron nitride nanoribbons (BNNRs) using the density functional theory method. Pure BNNRs with both edges fully saturated by hydrogen are semiconducting with wide band gaps. Values of the band gap depend on the width and the type of edge. The chemical decoration of BNNRs’ edges with four different functional groups, including -F, -Cl, -OH, and -NO2, was investigated. The band-gap modulation by chemical decoration may be exploited for nanoelectronic applications.

Temporal Data Classification Using Linear Classifiers, Peter Revesz, Thomas Triplet Sep 2009

Temporal Data Classification Using Linear Classifiers, Peter Revesz, Thomas Triplet

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Data classification is usually based on measurements recorded at the same time. This paper considers temporal data classification where the input is a temporal database that describes measurements over a period of time in history while the predicted class is expected to occur in the future. We describe a new temporal classification method that improves the accuracy of standard classification methods. The benefits of the method are tested on weather forecasting using the meteorological database from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The advanced electric power grid is a cyber-physical system comprised of physical components, such as transmission lines and generators, and a network of embedded systems deployed for their cyber control. The objective of this paper is to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the reliability of this cyber-physical system. The original contribution of the approach lies in the scope of failures analyzed, which crosses the cyber-physical boundary by investigating physical manifestations of failures in cyber control. As an example of power electronics deployed to enhance and control the operation of the grid, we study Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices, which are …

Gpu Acceleration Of Object Classification Algorithms Using Nvidia Cuda, Jesse Patrick Harvey

Theses

The field of computer vision has become an important part of today's society, supporting crucial applications in the medical, manufacturing, military intelligence and surveillance domains. Many computer vision tasks can be divided into fundamental steps: image acquisition, pre-processing, feature extraction, detection or segmentation, and high-level processing. This work focuses on classification and object detection, specifically k-Nearest Neighbors, Support Vector Machine classification, and Viola & Jones object detection. Object detection and classification algorithms are computationally intensive, which makes it difficult to perform classification tasks in real-time. This thesis aims in overcoming the processing limitations of the above classification algorithms by offloading …

Automated 3d Object Modeling From Aerial Video Imagery, Prudhvi K. Gurram

Theses

Research in physically accurate 3D modeling of a scene is gaining momentum because of its far reaching applications in civilian and defense sectors. The modeled 3D scene must conform both geometrically and spectrally to the real world for all the applications. Geometric modeling of a scene can be achieved in many ways of which the two most popular methods are - a) using multiple 2D passive images of the scene also called as stereo vision and b) using 3D point clouds like Lidar (Light detection and ranging) data. In this research work, we derive the 3D models of objects in …

Behavioral Enhancement Of Onshore Transport By Postlarval Caribbean Spiny Lobster (Panulirus Argus), Jason S. Goldstein, Mark J. Butler Iv

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

We conducted a series of laboratory experiments to examine the orientation, settlement, and metamorphosis of Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) pueruli (postlarvae) in response to cues characteristic of their nursery in back-reef tropical lagoons. Our results suggest that pueruli were attracted to coastal water sources and the metabolites of red macroalgae (Laurencia spp.) when compared with oceanic water and artificial seawater treatments. Pueruli were not attracted to waterborne cues from sea grass, were repelled by hypersaline or hyposaline water, and discerned coastal cues from water collected as far as 30 km offshore from the reef. We also conducted experiments to …

Efficient Conditional Proxy Re-Encryption With Chosen-Ciphertext Security, Jian Weng, Yanjiang Yang, Qiang Tang, Robert H. Deng Sep 2009

Efficient Conditional Proxy Re-Encryption With Chosen-Ciphertext Security, Jian Weng, Yanjiang Yang, Qiang Tang, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recently, a variant of proxy re-encryption, named conditional proxy re-encryption (C-PRE), has been introduced. Compared with traditional proxy re-encryption, C-PRE enables the delegator to implement fine-grained delegation of decryption rights, and thus is more useful in many applications. In this paper, based on a careful observation on the existing definitions and security notions for C-PRE, we re-formalize more rigorous definition and security notions for C-PRE. We further propose a more efficient C-PRE scheme, and prove its chosen-ciphertext security under the decisional bilinear Diffie-Hellman (DBDH) assumption in the random oracle model. In addition, we point out that a recent C-PRE scheme …

Multi-View Ear Recognition Based On Moving Least Square Pose Interpolation, Heng Liu, David Zhang, Zhiyuan Zhang Sep 2009

Multi-View Ear Recognition Based On Moving Least Square Pose Interpolation, Heng Liu, David Zhang, Zhiyuan Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Based on moving least square, a multi-view ear pose interpolation and corresponding recognition approach is proposed. This work firstly analyzes the shape characteristics of actual trace caused by ear pose varying in feature space. Then according to training samples pose projection, we manage to recover the complete multi-view ear pose manifold by using moving least square pose interpolation. The constructed multi-view ear pose manifolds can be easily utilized to recognize ear images captured under different views based on finding the minimal projection distance to the manifolds. The experimental results and some comparisons show the new method is superior to manifold …

Hierarchical Self-Healing Key Distribution For Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks, Yanjiang Yang, Jianying Zhou, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao Sep 2009

Hierarchical Self-Healing Key Distribution For Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks, Yanjiang Yang, Jianying Zhou, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Self-healing group key distribution aims to achieve robust key distribution over lossy channels in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). However, all existing self-healing group key distribution schemes in the literature consider homogenous WSNs which are known to be unscalable. Heterogeneous WSNs have better scalability and performance than homogenous ones. We are thus motivated to study hierarchial self-healing group key distribution, tailored to the heterogeneous WSN architecture. In particular, we revisit and adapt Dutta et al.’s model to the setting of hierarchical self-healing group key distribution, and propose a concrete scheme that achieves computational security and high efficiency.

Font Size: Make Font Size Smaller Make Font Size Default Make Font Size Larger Exploiting Coordination Locales In Distributed Pomdps Via Social Model Shaping, Pradeep Varakantham, Jun Young Kwak, Matthew Taylor, Janusz Marecki, Paul Scerri, Milind Tambe

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Distributed POMDPs provide an expressive framework for modeling multiagent collaboration problems, but NEXPComplete complexity hinders their scalability and application in real-world domains. This paper introduces a subclass of distributed POMDPs, and TREMOR, an algorithm to solve such distributed POMDPs. The primary novelty of TREMOR is that agents plan individually with a single agent POMDP solver and use social model shaping to implicitly coordinate with other agents. Experiments demonstrate that TREMOR can provide solutions orders of magnitude faster than existing algorithms while achieving comparable, or even superior, solution quality.

Understanding Early Diffusion Of Digital Wireless Phones, Robert J. Kauffman, Angsana A. Techatassanasoontorn Sep 2009

Understanding Early Diffusion Of Digital Wireless Phones, Robert J. Kauffman, Angsana A. Techatassanasoontorn

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

There is increasing empirical evidence from academic research and strong recognition among policymakers that wide diffusion and innovative uses of digital wireless phones are important sources of a country's economic growth and social development. Adopters do not necessarily adopt digital wireless phones at the same time though. Although the diffusion of innovation theory suggests five adopter categories according to their degree of innovativeness, this approach lacks theoretical justification and, more importantly, it makes a critical assumption of a normal distribution of adopters that needs empirical validation. This study investigates the basis for defining different adopter categories and factors that affect …

A Hybrid Firm's Pricing Strategy In Electronic Commerce Under Channel Migration, Robert John Kauffman, Dongwon Lee, Jung Lee, Byungjoon Yoo Sep 2009

A Hybrid Firm's Pricing Strategy In Electronic Commerce Under Channel Migration, Robert John Kauffman, Dongwon Lee, Jung Lee, Byungjoon Yoo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Achieving an effective business design across the Internet and the off-line channel is a critical concern for a hybrid firm's choice of pricing strategy. Two pricing models are proposed to examine how consumer channel migration (one-way channel interaction from the traditional sales channel to the Internet) affects pricing strategy. One model has no interaction between the Internet and off-line channels. The other includes the possibility of one-way migration to the Internet channel and incorporates consumers' channel-switching costs and loyalty to the firm. The two models offer interesting results for understanding traditional and Internet-based selling. A high level of channel migration …

Admission Control For Differentiated Services In Future Generation Cdma Networks, Hwee-Pink Tan, Rudesindo Núñez-Queija, Adriana F. Gabor, Onno J. Boxma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Future Generation CDMA wireless systems, e.g., 3G, can simultaneously accommodate flow transmissions of users with widely heterogeneous applications. As radio resources are limited, we propose an admission control rule that protects users with stringent transmission bit-rate requirements (“streaming traffic”) while offering sufficient capacity over longer time intervals to delay-tolerant users (“elastic traffic”). While our strategy may not satisfy classical notions of fairness, we aim to reduce congestion and increase overall throughput of elastic users. Using time-scale decomposition, we develop approximations to evaluate the performance of our differentiated admission control strategy to support integrated services with transmission bit-rate requirements in a …

Communication-Efficient Classification In P2p Networks, Hock Hee Ang, Vivekanand Gopalkrishnan, Wee Keong Ng, Steven C. H. Hoi Sep 2009

Communication-Efficient Classification In P2p Networks, Hock Hee Ang, Vivekanand Gopalkrishnan, Wee Keong Ng, Steven C. H. Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Distributed classification aims to learn with accuracy comparable to that of centralized approaches but at far lesser communication and computation costs. By nature, P2P networks provide an excellent environment for performing a distributed classification task due to the high availability of shared resources, such as bandwidth, storage space, and rich computational power. However, learning in P2P networks is faced with many challenging issues; viz., scalability, peer dynamism, asynchronism and fault-tolerance. In this paper, we address these challenges by presenting CEMPaR—a communication-efficient framework based on cascading SVMs that exploits the characteristics of DHT-based lookup protocols. CEMPaR is designed to be robust …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

According to general relativity a perturbed black hole will settle to a stationary configuration by the emission of gravitational radiation. Such a perturbation will occur, for example, in the coalescence of a black hole binary, following their inspiral and subsequent merger. At late times the waveform is a superposition of quasinormal modes, which we refer to as the ringdown. The dominant mode is expected to be the fundamental mode, l=m=2. Since this is a well-known waveform, matched filtering can be implemented to search for this signal using LIGO data. We present a search for gravitational waves from black hole ringdowns …

The Elucidation Of Metabolic Pathways And Their Improvements Using Stable Optimization Of Large-Scale Kinetic Models Of Cellular Systems, Evgeni V. Nikolaev

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Metabolic engineering of cellular systems to maximize reaction fluxes or metabolite concentrations still presents a significant challenge by encountering unpredictable instabilities that can be caused by simultaneous or consecutive enhancements of many reaction steps. It can therefore be important to select carefully small subsets of key enzymes for their subsequent stable modification compatible with cell physiology. To address this important problem, we introduce a general mixed integer non-linear problem (MINLP) formulation to compute automatically which enzyme levels should be modulated and which enzyme regulatory structures should be altered to achieve the given optimization goal using non-linear kinetic models of relevant …

Profiles Of Drug Endangered Children: Investigation In A Clinical Sample, Imanie Samanmali Wijayaratne

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Despite the increase in children born prenatally exposed to methamphetamine, little is known about the cognitive and neuropsychological outcomes of these children. Research specific to prenatal-methamphetamine exposure is extremely limited and has been primarily restricted to rat studies. This research combined with the few studies examining children prenatally exposed to methamphetamine suggests that methamphetamine-exposure is associated with various cognitive and neuropsychological delays and is impacted by both biological and environmental factors. Given the scarcity of research in this area, the current study used archival data from a psychological assessment clinic to (1) describe the frequency of prenatal methamphetamine-exposure cases, (2) …

Observer Reliability Of Cephalometric Landmark Identification On 3-D Mr Images, Michael S. Pollack Sep 2009

Observer Reliability Of Cephalometric Landmark Identification On 3-D Mr Images, Michael S. Pollack

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Introduction: Cephalometric analysis is a cornerstone of orthodontic diagnosis, yet much information is lost when 3-dimensional structures are assessed with 2-dimensional methods. CBCT offers 3-dimensional imaging but at the cost of higher levels of ionizing radiation. Magnetic resonance imaging provides 3-dimensional imaging without ionizing radiation and additionally imparts visualization of soft tissue structures. Prior to employing MR images for cephalometric analysis, reliability of landmark identification must be assessed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate intra- and interobserver reliability in 3-dimensional landmark identification using MR images.

Materials and Methods: Fifteen cranial MR images (3.0 T, MP-RAGE) from subjects between …
