How The Malaysian Chinese View Their Malay Counterparts: A Version Of Accepting Others, K.C. Hei, J. Mohd Ali

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

A change in the political landscape of Malaysia has been emerging in a gradual manner, for the past few months, since the new premiership in March, 2009. After more than 51 years of independence, it became apparent that the ruling Malaysian government, Barisan Nasional, is not taking things in this country for granted. A number of things can be attributed to this change. First, it was the taking over of five (since 2009) Malaysian states by the opposition party, Pakatan Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) after the March 8, 2009 election. The states of Selangor, Kedah, Pulau Pinang, Kelantan, and until recently, …

Obesity And Cancer, Rickie Brawer, Phd, Mph, Nancy Brisbon, Md, James Plumb, Md Sep 2009

Obesity And Cancer, Rickie Brawer, Phd, Mph, Nancy Brisbon, Md, James Plumb, Md

Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers

Obesity has become the second leading preventable cause of disease and death in the United States, trailing only tobacco use. Weight control, dietary choices, and levels of physical activity are important modifiable determinants of cancer risk. If multi-factorial approaches to prevention and management are not implemented, obesity will likely become the leading modifiable cause of death in the coming years. Physicians have a key role in integrating these approaches into clinical care and advocating for systemic prevention efforts. This article provides: 1) an introduction to the epidemiology and magnitude of childhood and adult obesity; 2) the relationship of overweight/obesity to …

Vowel Recognition From Articulatory Position Time-Series Data, Jun Wang, Ashok Samal, Jordan R. Green, Tom D. Carrell Sep 2009

Vowel Recognition From Articulatory Position Time-Series Data, Jun Wang, Ashok Samal, Jordan R. Green, Tom D. Carrell

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

A new approach of recognizing vowels from articulatory position time-series data was proposed and tested in this paper. This approach directly mapped articulatory position time-series data to vowels without extracting articulatory features such as mouth opening. The input time-series data were time-normalized and sampled to fixed-width vectors of articulatory positions. Three commonly used classifiers, Neural Network, Support Vector Machine and Decision Tree were used and their performances were compared on the vectors. A single speaker dataset of eight major English vowels acquired using Electromagnetic Articulograph (EMA) AG500 was used. Recognition rate using cross validation ranged from 76.07% to 91.32% for …

Tyrannophobia, Eric A. Posner, Adrian Vermeule Sep 2009

Tyrannophobia, Eric A. Posner, Adrian Vermeule

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Tyrannophobia—the fear of dictatorship—is a dominant theme in American political discourse. Yet dictatorship has never existed in the United States or even been likely. The hypothesis that tyrannophobia itself has prevented dictatorship from occurring is implausible; better evidence exists for alternative hypotheses. We conclude that tyrannophobia is an irrational political attitude that has interfered with, and continues to interfere with, needed institutional reform.

Review: Digital Culture, Play And Identity: A World Of Warcraft Reader, Jordan Lieser

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Both the digital and real societies produced by Blizzard's Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG), World of Warcraft, have received a lot of attention in the relatively new field of game studies. Due to its phenomenal size and cultural significance, the interest World of Warcraft draws is justifiable. The book, Digital Culture, Play, and Identity: A World of Warcraft Reader attempts to dissect the gaming industry's largest MMORPG through a compilation of work consisting of thirteen separate analyses, representing a wide variety of scholars trained with different analytical toolsets. This format was deliberately chosen by the editors, Hilde G. …

Feeling Your Way : Affect In Psychotherapy And Creative Writing From The Perspective Of The Client-Writer, Andrea Jean Torres Sep 2009

Feeling Your Way : Affect In Psychotherapy And Creative Writing From The Perspective Of The Client-Writer, Andrea Jean Torres

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study asked: What do the affective experiences of engaging in psychotherapy and engaging in creative writing have in common, as perceived by the client-writer? The subjective experience of six "client-writers," individuals who selfidentified as both creative writers and current or former psychotherapy clients, were explored to determine whether being in a typical psychotherapy session and in a typical creative writing session involved similar feelings and affective processes. Study findings showed that expressing feelings, accessing the unconscious, making discoveries, exploring and/or learning about oneself, and using creativity were common to both creative writing and psychotherapy; releasing energy, developing insight, identifying …

An Exploration Of White Mental Health Clinicians' Provision Of Spanish Language Services To Latino/A Clients, Sara Esther Walker

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study explored White mental health clinicians' provision of services in Spanish to Latino/a clients through exploratory interviews with thirteen clinicians. Participants were asked about their identities as White Spanish speakers and their motivations to provide services in Spanish. They were asked how clients, colleagues, and supervisors respond to them as White Spanish speakers. Challenging aspects of their work were explored, as were any instances in which they felt advantaged by their White identities. The Effectiveness Of Collaboration In Teaching And Learning Writing., Tan Hsiang Chyii

Student Works (2010-2019)

This study seeks to find out whether the quality of students’ writing improves substantially through collaboration. It is to gain an understanding into how collaborative work can aid the learning and teaching of writing in a typical Malaysian classroom. Moreover, the need to engage with others is an essential element for maintaining motivation in learning. The research methodology utilises an experimental approach. First, a pre-test was conducted in which subjects composed an essay individually. Next, the pre-test was followed by intervention in which subjects were familiarised with the steps involved in collaborative work. Finally, subjects were required to write essays …

Variations On The Brazilian Orpheus Theme, Marília Scaff Rocha Ribeiro Sep 2009

Variations On The Brazilian Orpheus Theme, Marília Scaff Rocha Ribeiro

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "Variations on the Brazilian Orpheus Theme," Marília Scaff Rocha Ribeiro discusses Vinícius de Moraes's play Orfeu da Conceição (1956) together with two of its filmic adaptations, namely Marcel Camus's Black Orpheus (1959) and Carlos Diegues's Orfeu (1999). Ribeiro's analysis is located in the context of the race debates of the second half of the twentieth century in Brazil. Ribeiro argues that the periodic resurfacing of a musician from the favelas as a special being who is able to chant and enchant speaks to the appeal both of popular music and of the thematic of race, issues that …

From Diaspora To Nomadic Identity In The Work Of Lispector And Felinto, Paula Jordão Sep 2009

From Diaspora To Nomadic Identity In The Work Of Lispector And Felinto, Paula Jordão

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "From Diaspora to Nomadic Identity in the Work of Lispector and Felinto" Paula Jordão analyzes Clarice Lispector's A Hora da Estrela (1977; The Hour of the Star, Trans. Giovanni Pontiero, 1992) and Marilene Felinto's As Mulheres de Tijucopapo (1982; The Women of Tijucopapo, trans. Irene Matthews, 1994). Despite being stylistically different, Lispector's A Hora da Estrela and Felinto's As Mulheres de Tijucopapo depict protagonists who share the same social and ethnic background and diasporic identity as women from the Northeast of Brazil. A closer look at the narrative trajectory of these two main characters shows us that …
