The Impact Of American Movies On Egyptian Cinema In 1950s And 1960s, Radi Abouelhassan Sep 2009

The Impact Of American Movies On Egyptian Cinema In 1950s And 1960s, Radi Abouelhassan

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

The 1952 military coup in Egypt constituted the beginning of a new era in Egypts history and pushed forward substantial societal, economic and political changes. These changes represent the fruits of the revolutionary regime's pro-modernization ideology. In their search for modernity, the Egyptian elite invested in cinema as well as other forms of media and tended to follow the models of western countries. The strong relation between the Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser and the US, as well as the dominance of the American movies shown Egypt compared to other foreign cinematic industries at that time, directed the Egyptian elite …

School Counselor Perspectives On Bullying Behavior In Urban Middle School Settings, Elizabeth Jean Zacher

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study examined middle school counselors' perspectives of bullying behavior as it occurred in their respective school environments. This exploratory study was conducted with 12 respondents who are current middle school counselors with at least three years of experience working in their school settings. Respondents were recruited from a variety of middle school settings including public, private, and charter school environments in the New York City area using a snowball sampling method. An Integrated Assessment Of Archaeobotanical Recovery Methods In The Neotropical Rainforest Of Northern Belize: Flotation And Dry Screening, Jon B. Hageman, David J. Goldstein Sep 2009

An Integrated Assessment Of Archaeobotanical Recovery Methods In The Neotropical Rainforest Of Northern Belize: Flotation And Dry Screening, Jon B. Hageman, David J. Goldstein

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This report presents results of a study examining the ancient use of plants at four Late Classic (CE 600-900) Maya rural farmsteads in northwestern Belize. Our research specifically targeted residential middens for macrobotanical recovery. Samples yielded the remains of more than a dozen plant families, representing some genera that do not currently grow in the area. These plants were used in the Late Classic, countering the idea that ancient botanical remains do not survive in Neotropical archaeological contexts. We also evaluated two macrobotanical sample processing methods vis-à-vis one another: flotation and dry screening. Our results indicate that flotation recovered 58% …

Justice In Time, Robert C. Hockett Sep 2009

Justice In Time, Robert C. Hockett

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Challenges raised by the subject of intergenerational justice seem often to be thought almost uniquely intractable. In particular, apparent conflicts between the core values of impartiality and efficiency raised by a large and still growing number of intertemporal impossibility results derived by Koopmans, Diamond, Basu & Mitra, and others have been taken to foreclose fruitful policy assessment done with a view to the distant future.

This Essay aims to dispel the sense of bewilderment, pessimism and attendant paralysis that afflicts intertemporal justice assessment. It works toward that end by demonstrating that the most vexing puzzles raised by questions of intergenerational …

On Democracy And Critical Citizenship, Arturo Rodriguez Sep 2009

On Democracy And Critical Citizenship, Arturo Rodriguez

Literacy, Language, and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this essay I fuse narrative, social critique and critical understandings of schooling. Across the writing I argue for an increased critical awareness of print and other forms of news media. For the purposes of this paper I propose two major arguments that support critical awareness, they are: knowing what it means to be an informed citizen and practicing a critical democratic citizenship. As a springboard for discussing the major themes I review how print and other news media are used as propaganda and how a seemingly literate populace more easily accepts what are understood as social norms.

Talking With Patients: How Hospitals Use Bilingual Clinicians And Staff To Care For Patients With Language Needs, Jennifer Huang, Karen C. Jones, Marsha Regenstein, Christal Ramos Sep 2009

Talking With Patients: How Hospitals Use Bilingual Clinicians And Staff To Care For Patients With Language Needs, Jennifer Huang, Karen C. Jones, Marsha Regenstein, Christal Ramos

Health Policy and Management Issue Briefs

Improving access to language services in health care settings has become a focal point for health reform and disparities-focused legislation, in recognition of the increasing linguistic and cultural diversity of individuals across the nation. Bilingual staff and clinicians can serve as enormously valuable resources to hospitals and other health care organizations, offering a critical set of skills to interact with individuals who require care in a language other than English. Bilingual clinicians can serve a vital need for hospitals by providing high-quality health care, improving patient safety, and meeting organizational priorities to provide linguistically and culturally appropriate care for patients. …

Degree Of Distraction: What Cell Phones Do To A Driver's Brain, Amy Oprean Sep 2009

Degree Of Distraction: What Cell Phones Do To A Driver's Brain, Amy Oprean

New Science

In today’s fast paced, technology-saturated world, cell phones have changed daily life in a multitude of ways – and not always for the better. A major concern surrounding mobile phones is the hazard of conversation-engrossed drivers losing focus on the road, potentially contributing to crashes. But while anecdotes of cell phone- distracted drivers aren’t hard to find, an actual scientific measure of how dangerous cell phones are – both hand-held and hands-free – is still a highly controversial topic among researchers, lawmakers and drivers. Li Hsieh, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders in the College …

On-Campus Service Projects: An Experiment In Education For Liberation, Michael J. Gent Sep 2009

On-Campus Service Projects: An Experiment In Education For Liberation, Michael J. Gent

Organization Management Journal

This article describes an approach to service-learning based on Paulo Freire’s model of education for liberation. On-campus Service Projects (OCSPs) differ markedly from typical service-learning assignments in two ways: (1) they take place in the students’ own college setting rather than out in the community; and (2) in my version, they challenge students to engage in critical thinking and acting (praxis) to transform ‘‘oppressive’’ situations within their institution. The article reviews Freire’s pedagogical approach and details how it is implemented in OCSPs. Like all service-learning, the OCSP experience enables students to practice course-related skills (e.g., team building, project planning). More …

Second Languages And Australian Schooling, Joseph Lo Bianco Sep 2009

Second Languages And Australian Schooling, Joseph Lo Bianco

Australian Education Review

It is an underlying principle of AER 54 that active efforts should be made to cultivate the latent bilingual potential within Australia’s wider population and that this should be linked to major improvements in the quality of language teaching in schools. A combined approach of this kind will require investment in specialised preparation for language teachers, more time allocated to second language teaching in schools, and coordination of effort across school and post-schooling sectors. Section 1 describes the critical distinction between niche learning and mass learning of languages, and the current distribution of language competence throughout Australian society. The role …

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Since its inception in 1994, the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) has provided a comprehensive array of cross-disciplinary and discipline-specific development activities in support of the educational function of the university. The Center has a dual mission of faculty development in teaching, learning, and assessment and in the development of community-university partnerships. Th e Center is a place of innovation, a gathering place for idea generation and testing, and a place where faculty may turn for individual consultation and professional advice. Increasingly, CAE supports faculty interested in community-engaged research.

Xenophobia, International Migration And Human Development, Jonathan Crush, Sujata Ramachandran Sep 2009

Xenophobia, International Migration And Human Development, Jonathan Crush, Sujata Ramachandran

Southern African Migration Programme

In the continuing discussion on migration and development, the vulnerability of all migrant groups to exploitation and mistreatment in host countries has been highlighted along with an emphasis on protecting their rights. However, xenophobia has not yet received explicit attention although anti-migrant sentiments and practices are clearly on the rise even in receiving countries in developing regions. Despite gaps in existing empirical work, research and anecdotal evidence exposes pervasive forms of discrimination, hostility, and violence experienced by migrant communities, with the latter becoming easy scapegoats for various social problems in host countries. This study attempts to insert xenophobia in this …
