Christ's Interpretation Of Isaiah's 52'S "My Servant" In 3 Nephi, Gaye Strathearn, Jacob Moody Jan 2009

Christ's Interpretation Of Isaiah's 52'S "My Servant" In 3 Nephi, Gaye Strathearn, Jacob Moody

Faculty Publications

When the Savior appeared to the “more righteous” of the Nephites and Lamanites, he used many teachings that modern readers readily recognize from the Old and New Testaments. Some critics have suggested that Joseph Smith merely lifted these teachings from his copy of the Bible.1 While some of these quotations are very similar to the accounts in the King James Bible, there are some significant differences that strongly suggest that the process was more complex and nuanced than these critics allow.

Cultural Competence: Developing And Assessing Multicultural Proficiency For Teachers And School Personnel In Hawaii, Caryl H. Hitchcock, Mary Anne Prater, Chuan Chang Jan 2009

Cultural Competence: Developing And Assessing Multicultural Proficiency For Teachers And School Personnel In Hawaii, Caryl H. Hitchcock, Mary Anne Prater, Chuan Chang

Faculty Publications

Teachers were recruited from the mainland of the United States to work in rural areas in the State of Hawaii to meet the high demand for personnel. But often there is a mismatch between the culture of the island residents and that of the new teachers. To alleviate this mismatch, a workshop was developed to promote multicultural proficiency of school personnel focusing on Asian/Pacific cultures. One hundred teachers, administrators and staff (including custodians and cafeteria workers) from four rural elementary schools participated in a three hour workshop. The workshop consisted of three activities: (a) self-awareness, (b) awareness of Asian/Pacific Island …

Synthesizing Correlated Rss News Articles Based On A Fuzzy Equivalence Relation, Yiu-Kai D. Ng, Maria Soledad Pera Jan 2009

Synthesizing Correlated Rss News Articles Based On A Fuzzy Equivalence Relation, Yiu-Kai D. Ng, Maria Soledad Pera

Faculty Publications

Tens of thousands of news articles are posted on-line each day, covering topics from politics to science to current events. To better cope with this overwhelming volume of information, RSS (news) feeds are used to categorize newly posted articles. Nonetheless, most RSS users must filter through many articles within the same or different RSS feeds to locate articles pertaining to their particular interests. Due to the large number of news articles in individual RSS feeds, there is a need for further organizing articles to aid users in locating non-redundant, informative, and related articles of interest quickly. In this paper, we …

Biblical Naming Reports With, Dana M. Pike Jan 2009

Biblical Naming Reports With, Dana M. Pike

Faculty Publications

This study reviews the naming reports in the MT r that contain the phrase [Hebrew text] () in order to analyze the current practice of regularly rendering the subjects of these reports as indefinite. Though this is understandable in some cases, I contend that many of these subjects can just as well be understood as definite. Whereas the difference may seem insignificant in some passages, rendering the subject as definite is productive in others. A complete examination of all biblical naming reports is a large and complex undertaking, well beyond the limitations of the present study. This review of the …

This paper describes a psycholinguistic experiment that investigates whether the applicability of the topological spatial prepositions "at", "on" or "in" to describe the spatial configuration between two objects is related to the topological relationships between objects being described

Generating Natural Language Descriptions Of Ontology Concepts, Niels Schütte Jan 2009

Generating Natural Language Descriptions Of Ontology Concepts, Niels Schütte

Conference papers

This paper gives an overview of ongoing work on a system for the generation of NL descriptions of classes defined in OWL ontologies. We present a general structuring approach for such descriptions. Since OWL ontologies do not by default contain the information necessary for lexicalization, lexical information has to be added to the data via annotations. A rulebased mechanism for automatically deriving these annotations is presented.

Contextual Leadership: The Social Construction Of Leadership In A Comprehensive Healthcare System, Mark J. Moir Jan 2009

Contextual Leadership: The Social Construction Of Leadership In A Comprehensive Healthcare System, Mark J. Moir

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Healthcare is a complex and dynamic environment containing a plurality of social forces and perspectives that shape the organizational culture and the nature of the leadership. As leadership is a social phenomenon, it is important to understand the complex social processes that mediate our perceptions and that in turn influence processes of leader attribution. The central purpose of this study has been to illuminate the nature of culturally specific processes that emerge within a specific organizational setting and that fuel leader attribution and the social construction of leadership. Accordingly, this qualitative study has developed a Grounded Theory utilizing Situational Analysis …

An Analysis Of The Current United States And State Of Washington's Mental Health Policies Serving Children And Families, Maile M. Bay Jan 2009

An Analysis Of The Current United States And State Of Washington's Mental Health Policies Serving Children And Families, Maile M. Bay

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Due to continued fragmentation and gaps in mental health services and the increase in the prevalence of mental health problems for children, youth, and their families, these populations remain underserved. In 2003, the federal New Freedom Commission (Commission) responded by publishing policies to address these concerns. As directed in 2005, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) funded planning incentive grants to states to transform their delivery of care.

The study reviewed the federal policy, specifically the recommendations of the Commission’s Subcommittee on Children and Families, and Washington State’s policy and implementation actions of its five-year SAMHSA incentive …

Keeping Dictators Honest: The Role Of Population, Quoc-Anh Do, Filipe R. Campante Jan 2009

Keeping Dictators Honest: The Role Of Population, Quoc-Anh Do, Filipe R. Campante

Research Collection School Of Economics

In order to explain the apparently paradoxical presence of acceptable governance in many non-democratic regimes, economists and political scientists have focused mostly on institutions acting as de facto checks and balances. In this paper, we propose that population plays a similar role in guaranteeing the quality of governance and redistribution. We argue and demonstrate with historical evidence that the concentration of population around the policy making center serves as an insurgency threat to a dictatorship, inducing it to yield to more redistribution and better governance. We bring this centered concept of population concentration to the data through the Centered Index …

Guns As Smut: Defending The Home-Bound Second Amendment, Darrell A. H. Miller Jan 2009

Guns As Smut: Defending The Home-Bound Second Amendment, Darrell A. H. Miller

Faculty Scholarship

In District of Columbia v. Heller, the Supreme Court held that the Second Amendment guarantees a personal, individual right to keep and bear arms. But the Court left lower courts and legislatures adrift on the fundamental question of scope. While the Court stated in dicta that some regulation may survive constitutional scrutiny, it left the precise contours of the right, and even the method by which to determine those contours, for 'future evaluation."

This Article offers a provocative proposal for tackling the issue of Second Amendment scope, one tucked in many dresser drawers across the nation: Treat the Second Amendment …

Case Studies For Teaching Stylistics For Business Communication, Siow-Heng Ong Jan 2009

Case Studies For Teaching Stylistics For Business Communication, Siow-Heng Ong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The employment of stylistics can influence the effectiveness of a brochure, pamphlet, press release and other forms of business communication dramatically. When we consider that the language used to formulate the texts of these publicity materials has the potential to generate hundreds of thousands of dollars in sales, we do well to pay attention to how stylistics can be applied persuasively. This paper provides a theoretical framework for the mother of all stylistics, the metaphor. Examples of how metaphors are used to persuade are then discussed in prominent speeches and other texts. Finally, analytical and constructive assignments are posed and …

Feel-Good Formalism, Mitu Gulati, Anna Gelpern Jan 2009

Feel-Good Formalism, Mitu Gulati, Anna Gelpern

Faculty Scholarship

This essay highlights a phenomenon that has no place in the conventional theory of sophisticated business contracts: the term that makes no sense as an enforceable promise, one that defies functional explanation, one that drafters blush to rationalize in retrospect or chalk up to honest mistake. The subset of contract drafters who stop and think about the term before the contract is signed know that it has little enforcement or other instrumental value. Even if a court were to enforce such a term, its interpretation would be extremely hard to predict at signing. Nevertheless, such clauses get included in contracts …

Revisiting Hateful Science: The Nazi “Contribution” To The Journey Of Antisemitism, Steven Leonard Jacobs Jan 2009

Revisiting Hateful Science: The Nazi “Contribution” To The Journey Of Antisemitism, Steven Leonard Jacobs

Journal of Hate Studies

While this volume of the Journal of Hate Studies is devoted to “The Science of Hate”—research and knowledge about hate’s origins and manifestations seen through the lens of the empirical sciences—this contribution is a cautionary reminder that, like all human projects, intellectual and other, the sciences, too, can be perverted by its practitioners in the service of hate itself.1 The case study is that of the Nazi Otmar Freiherr von Verschuer, MD, (1896-1969), eugenicist and geneticist, and, specifically, his (1938) text “Racial Biology of the Jews.” Of particular note is the American “connection,” in supplying both supporting legitimation for the …

H.L.A. Hart: A Twentieth-Century Oxford Political Philosopher, John M. Finnis Jan 2009

H.L.A. Hart: A Twentieth-Century Oxford Political Philosopher, John M. Finnis

Journal Articles

This essay offers first a sketch (by a student and colleague) of H.L.A. Hart's life; second an account of the political philosophy which he explicitly articulated in The Concept of Law (1961), and of its relation to the main currents of Oxford political philosophy in the 1950s; and thirdly an exposition and critical assessment of the normative political theory deployed, to widespread acclaim, in his Law, Liberty & Morality (1963).

Socially Engaged Buddhist Nuns: Activism In Taiwan And North America, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd Jan 2009

Socially Engaged Buddhist Nuns: Activism In Taiwan And North America, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd

Theology and Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship

The last decades of the twentieth century have been a time of new visibility and social activism for Buddhists in Taiwan and around the world. This paper compares the social engagement of nuns in the Chinese Buddhist tradition in Taiwan and North America. I would like to argue that whereas nuns in Taiwan have developed a variety of approaches to social involvement, their counterparts in the Chinese diaspora in North America have had to face a set of challenges specific to overseas Chinese communities in addition to Chinese Buddhist tradition. The article concludes with reflections on the prospects for nuns' …

East Meets West: Chinese Reception And Translation Of Virginia Woolf, Guanglan Jin Jan 2009

East Meets West: Chinese Reception And Translation Of Virginia Woolf, Guanglan Jin

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation traces the evolution of the Chinese reception of Virginia Woolf through historical contextualization and explores the cultural conflicts in the Chinese interpretation and translation of Woolf with special emphasis on her feminism from a cross-cultural perspective. It also examines Woolf s and Ling Shuhua's critique of the tyrannies in the private world in their autobiographical works. The two stages of the Chinese reception of Woolf parallel those of the western one. The first stage from the early 1930s to the late 1940s may be characterized by so-called "interaction" between the Bloomsbury and Crescent Moon groups. It includes the …

"All The World's A Stage": (Re)Familiarizing Shakespeare: A Study Of Romeo And Juliet In The East And The West, Beau La Rhee

Open Access Dissertations

This study analyzes William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (1596) and his Globe Theater as well as John Gielgud's (1935), Peter Brook's (1947), and Tae-Suk Oh's (2005 and 2006) adaptation of it to explore how the play is retold, reinterpreted, and brought alive for new audiences through different cultures and through the theater of today. As the acclaimed western directors, the Korean director Tae-Suk Oh accurately interprets Shakespearean devices in the source text and employs methodologies drawn from his own culture as well as Elizabethan culture. He effectively relates the world of the play to the world of the audience through …

Children Of Possibility: Children's Musicking In Communities Of Practice, Kimberly Cotter-Lemus Jan 2009

Children Of Possibility: Children's Musicking In Communities Of Practice, Kimberly Cotter-Lemus

Open Access Dissertations

Inner-city youth are often labeled in social science research with the "at risk" construct, signifying the risk of anticipated failure based on children's (or families') deficiencies. In the context of an arts project, the inner-city students in this study demonstrated ability to overcome the deficient "at risk" label imposed by society. The year-long, teacher-practitioner research took place in an underprivileged K-5 elementary school in the Northeast. Using a sociocultural framework, I examined what happens when children in this school setting are given an arts project in which they are allowed to be self-directive. The arts project consisted of weekly participation …

Necessarily Critical? The Adoption Of A Parody Defence To Copyright Infringement In Canada, Graham Reynolds Jan 2009

Necessarily Critical? The Adoption Of A Parody Defence To Copyright Infringement In Canada, Graham Reynolds

All Faculty Publications

The creation and distribution of parodies promote the fundamental values underlying the constitutionally protected right to freedom of expression. Through parodies, individuals can progress in their “search for political, artistic and scientific truth”, protect their autonomy and self-development, and promote “public participation in the democratic process”. Recognizing the importance of parody to political, social, and cultural life, governments in various jurisdictions have adopted or proposed parody defences to copyright infringement. The Canadian Copyright Act, however, does not contain an explicit parody defence to copyright infringement. Furthermore, no Canadian court has accepted a defence of parody to a claim of copyright …

Supporting Asian-American Civic Engagement: Theory And Practice, Wing Yi Chan Jan 2009

Supporting Asian-American Civic Engagement: Theory And Practice, Wing Yi Chan

The Foundation Review

· This paper is a review of relevant research related to the civic engagement of Asian-American youth.

· Little work has been done to understand the civic engagement activities of Asian-American youth. However, unique promoters and barriers to Asian- American youth civic engagement exist, given this group’s distinct historical, cultural, and sociopolitical experiences.

· Asian-American youth may have two different ethnic and racial identities, and these identities may be related to different kinds of civic engagement. Asian-American students who have a stronger pan-Asian identity are more aware that their fate is linked with other Asian-Americans and therefore are more likely …

The Original Meaning Of The Privileges And Immunities Clause, Robert G. Natelson Jan 2009

The Original Meaning Of The Privileges And Immunities Clause, Robert G. Natelson

Georgia Law Review

The Constitution's Privileges and Immunities Clause drew on words and phrases common in Anglo-American law and law practice at the time the Clause was written. Modern courts and commentators have largely overlooked that law and practice, and thus have misinterpreted the Clause. It did not protect a right to travel, natural rights in general, colonial charter rights, or the "rights of Englishmen." The Clause meant only that if a state voluntarily bestowed positive legal benefits as incidents of its own citizenship, then that state had to grant those same benefits to visitors who were citizens of other U.S. states. This …

On Uncertainty, Ambiguity, And Contractual Conditions, Eric L. Talley Jan 2009

On Uncertainty, Ambiguity, And Contractual Conditions, Eric L. Talley

Faculty Scholarship

This article uses the recent Delaware Chancery Court case of Hexion v. Huntsman as a template for motivating thoughts about how contract law should interpret contractual conditions in general – and "material adverse event" provisions in particular – within environments of extreme ambiguity (as opposed to risk). Although ambiguity and aversion there to bear some facial similarities to risk and risk aversion, an optimal contractual allocation of uncertainty does not always track the optimal allocation of risk. After establishing these intuitions as a conceptual proposition, I endeavor to test them empirically, using a unique data set of 528 actual material …
