"Firing The Pigskin Real Right": Media Representations Of Simpson And Romo., Lindsey M. Eliopulos Jan 2009

"Firing The Pigskin Real Right": Media Representations Of Simpson And Romo., Lindsey M. Eliopulos

Master's Theses

The purpose of the study was to examine the media's representations of sport-celebrity couple singer-actress, Jessica Simpson and Dallas Cowboys Quarterback, Tony Romo. One hundred magazine and 100 newspaper articles published between December 17, 200, that coincided with the first publicized notion of the "Jessica Simpson jinx" and April 15, 2009, were qualitatively analyzed. The investigation revealed the prevailing dominant ideologies of patriarchal structures, traditional gender roles, hegemonic masculinity and deviance, while underscoring the mass media's ubiquitous characteristics. The literature emphasized the mass media's representation of the celebrity and the media's habitual employment of gossip and rumor linguistics to frame …

Relations Between Language And Executive Function In Spanish-Speaking Children., Ana Luz Portillo Jan 2009

Relations Between Language And Executive Function In Spanish-Speaking Children., Ana Luz Portillo

Master's Theses

The literature on the development of executive function (EF) has been largely limited to studies of middle-class English-speaking children. This study extended executive function research to a primarily low socioeconomic status (SES) sample of Spanish-speaking preschool children living in the United States. The purpose of this study was to examine a variety of language measures (vocabulary, grammar, and comprehensive language) in relation to a variety of executive function measures (working memory, inhibitory control, and attention-shifting). Results revealed that Spanish speakers performed on some, but not all, EF measures comparably to higher SES English-speaking peers, in concurrence with previously reported findings. …

Spectrogenetic Translation In Arundhati Roy's The God Of Small Things And Elsewhere, Puspa Damai Jan 2009

Spectrogenetic Translation In Arundhati Roy's The God Of Small Things And Elsewhere, Puspa Damai

English Faculty Research

South Asians, in their attempts to articulate post-colonial subjectivity, have themselves only reinscribed various aspects of colonial exoticism in their work. South Asian author Arundhati Roy’s rendering of untouchability in terms of godliness in The God of Small Things resonates with colonial ideologies that read “subalterns” as objects, not as subjects. Roy’s invocation of colonial methods of translation envisions untouchability in “absolutist terms”—a strategy that may ultimately mitigate against a recognition of the highly varied experiences, social agencies, and subjectivities of dalits living in South Asia and abroad.

International Teachers In The American Classroom : Deposing The Myth Of Monolingualism, Jodi G. Lehman Jan 2009

International Teachers In The American Classroom : Deposing The Myth Of Monolingualism, Jodi G. Lehman

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

An international graduate teaching assistant‘s way of speaking may pose a challenge for college students enrolled in STEM courses at American universities. Students commonly complain that unfamiliar accents interfere with their ability to comprehend the IGTA or that they have difficulty making sense of the IGTA‘s use of words or phrasing. These frustrations are echoed by parents who pay tuition bills. The issue has provoked state and national legislative debates over universities‘ use of IGTAs. However, potentially productive debates and interventions have been stalemated due to the failure to confront deeply embedded myths and cultural models that devalue otherness and …

Young Children’S Access And Use Of Computers In Family Child Care And Child Care Centers, Nanci Weinberger, Traci Anderson, Phyllis Schumacher Jan 2009

Young Children’S Access And Use Of Computers In Family Child Care And Child Care Centers, Nanci Weinberger, Traci Anderson, Phyllis Schumacher

Applied Psychology Department Faculty Journal Articles

Forty eight family child care providers and 37 center-based providers completed surveys about the availability and use of computers for children in their care. In addition, the providers were asked about their attitudes towards technology and their own computer skills. The impact of setting type on computer placement and rules about their use did not differ very much by setting type. Several factors were associated with the amount of time children were reported to use the computers. Overall, it appears that child care providers had developmentally sensitive guidelines for fostering computer use in both child care settings.

Intersections Of Language And Race For English Language Learners, Tonda Liggett Jan 2009

Intersections Of Language And Race For English Language Learners, Tonda Liggett

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

In this paper, I discuss the intersection of linguistic and racial hierarchies for English language learners in their school community. I argue that the mapping of one social hierarchy onto another is used to create Self-Other distinctions based on linguistic background. I examine how these hierarchies framed the social context in ways that marginalized this diverse group of learners. I draw on research data from six, white, middle-class English language teachers to analyze how their students experienced this intersection. I conclude with suggestions for teacher educators to include material and curricula that examines not only structural hierarchies of language and …

What Teachers Should Know About Racism, Prejudice, And Privilege: A Literature Review, Karie Mize Jan 2009

What Teachers Should Know About Racism, Prejudice, And Privilege: A Literature Review, Karie Mize

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Although racial groupings are not biologically determined, socially constructed racial categorizations greatly influence an individual’s material conditions and lived experiences. Social, economic, political, and educational realms are stratified as a result of racism, or the racist structures embedded in institutions and policies that allow whites to control the majority of resources. The extent to which the dominant group is collectively privileged in the United States’ society is difficult for whites to fully comprehend due to their social position. Teacher candidates need to understand the ways in which economic and social manifestations of racism affect educational institutions, which in turn perpetuates …

Transitions In The Mental Health Field's System Of Professions From Wwii Until The Present: The Case Of Dubville, Daniel Noam Warner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A case study of one mental health field in a medium-sized, steel-belt city over a 50 year period is presented. Through interviews and archive data, the narrative elucidates the transitions that occurred in regards to which professions are dominant, and which services count as mental health services, in different eras and under different science and governmental regimes. The dissertation focuses on four professional categories in particular: psychoanalytic psychiatrists, neurological psychiatrists, research psychologists, and clinical psychologists. It also focuses, primarily, on three institutions: a large psychiatric research hospital, a university psychology department, and a psychoanalytic institute. Through tracing the dynamics of …

This volume has about 760 pages, split into 25 chapters, from 41 contributors. First part of this book presents advances of Dezert-Smarandache Theory (DSmT) which is becoming one of the most comprehensive and flexible fusion theory based on belief functions. It can work in all fusion spaces: power set, hyper-power set, and super-power set, and has various fusion and conditioning rules that can be applied depending on each application. Some new generalized rules are introduced in this volume with codes for implementing some of them. For the qualitative fusion, the DSm Field and Linear Algebra of Refined Labels (FLARL) is …

The Edifying Spectacle Of A Drowned Woman: Sympathy And Irony In Indiana, Kate Bonin Jan 2009

The Edifying Spectacle Of A Drowned Woman: Sympathy And Irony In Indiana, Kate Bonin

Modern Languages and Cultures Faculty Work

Indiana (1832): escapist romance or early feminist roman à these? Issues of stylistic choice and social conscience are intertwined in the question of how George Sand positioned—and re-positioned—her first independent entry into the changing field of the novel. Although the novel treats such serious subjects as a wife’s socially-sanctioned abuse by her husband, and the corruption of the failing years of the Bourbon Restoration, both Indiana’s narrator and Sand herself repeatedly denied that the work was meant to convey any ulterior message or offer moral utility to its reader. These denials should not be dismissed as mere pro forma modesty, …

Many thanks to Joni Palmer, the panellists, and the participants in the Author Meets Critics session at the Association of American Geographers meeting (April 2008) where the conversation that we continue here began. We appreciate the gracious criticisms and are delighted with the authors‟ enthusiasm. Criticisms offered with such care nurture the larger intellectual project from which the book comes (see Schuurman and Pratt; Aufhauser ). We feel fortunate to be able to address some of the issues identified that we believe need more attention. We thank the editors of Thirdspace for the opportunity.

It may seem curious for editors …

Old W(H)Ine, Old Bottles: A Reply To Professor Paulsen, Margaret E. Mcguiness Jan 2009

Old W(H)Ine, Old Bottles: A Reply To Professor Paulsen, Margaret E. Mcguiness

Faculty Publications

(Excerpt)

International law is “everywhere” in the United States: informing state CO2 emissions standards; providing inspiration for local civil rights codes; and overseeing the more than three trillion dollars in annual trade in goods, to name just a few examples. A reader of Professor Michael Stokes Paulsen’s essay, The Constitutional Power To Interpret International Law, might be forgiven for missing these important trends, because rather than focus on the ubiquity of international law and the myriad ways in which it has permeated U.S. legal, social, economic, and political life, Paulsen returns us to old arguments over whether international law …

Situating Grammar Instruction In The World Language Classroom: Four Content-Enriched Strategies, Todd A. Hernández Jan 2009

Situating Grammar Instruction In The World Language Classroom: Four Content-Enriched Strategies, Todd A. Hernández

Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications

The role of grammar instruction in promoting communicative competence continues to be a controversial issue for the world language classroom teacher. Second language acquisition research suggests that critical to sustained progress in language use is a focus on form, which we define as attention to linguistic form in the context of performing a communicative task. We therefore offer here four content-enriched strategies for situating grammar in a communicative context: textual enhancement, input flood, structured input, and dictogloss. We present these tasks and activities within the framework of the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century (SFLL, 2006) to …
