Teachers’ Workplace Learning Within School Cultures Community In The United States And Lithuania, Elena Jurasaite-O'Keefe Jan 2009

Teachers’ Workplace Learning Within School Cultures Community In The United States And Lithuania, Elena Jurasaite-O'Keefe

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study is to explore teachers’ workplace informal professional learning and inform educational researchers, teacher educators, administrators and teachers about ways teachers learn to improve their practice. By questioning how teachers learn on-the-job to be better teachers and how school cultures position them as learners, this work generates hypotheses about relationships between the nature of workplace informal professional learning and its content and contexts. An ethnographic design based upon a grounded theory generates analytic categories from interviews and field notes through comparison of learning environments in three contrasting schools in two countries—Lithuania and the United States. Discourse …

Aesthetic Sensibility And Political Praxis: Foucault, Lyotard And The Darfur Crisis, Anne Bartlett, Gerard Kuperus, Marjolein Oele Jan 2009

Aesthetic Sensibility And Political Praxis: Foucault, Lyotard And The Darfur Crisis, Anne Bartlett, Gerard Kuperus, Marjolein Oele

Philosophy

This paper develops insights from Foucault and Lyotard to examine the Darfur crisis and the transformative potential of spaces of alterity. We show that Foucault’s quest for an aesthetics of existence is an attempt to found an alternative form of ethics based on wakefulness, sensibility, and suspicion on the part of the subject. In the final part of the paper we link this idea to Lyotard’s sensibility of the sublime. We show how aesthetic sensibility can be transformed in a political sensibility which bears witness to political injustices that result from the incommensurability of different genres of discourse. We illustrate …

Transcribing Refugees: The Entextualization Of Asylum Seekers' Hearings In A Transidiomatic Environment, Marco Jacquemet Jan 2009

Transcribing Refugees: The Entextualization Of Asylum Seekers' Hearings In A Transidiomatic Environment, Marco Jacquemet

Communication Studies

This article explores the link between asylum seekers’ verbal performances and their transidiomatic entextualization by documenting the procedure through which asylum seekers’ claims are examined by judicial authorities and translated into a public record. Every year thousands of displaced people seek the protection of various European states by filing political asylum claims which are examined by national commissions. In their depositions, asylum seekers are interviewed by immigration o‰cials for approximately an hour. After this interview they are presented with a judgment: a short text that summarizes their story and spells out the commission’s decision on the case. The claim of …

Legal Taxonomy, Emily Sherwin Jan 2009

Legal Taxonomy, Emily Sherwin

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This essay examines the ambition to taxonomize law and the different methods a legal taxonomer might employ. Three possibilities emerge. The first is a formal taxonomy that classifies legal materials according to rules of order and clarity. Formal taxonomy is primarily conventional and has no normative implications for judicial decision-making. The second possibility is a function-based taxonomy that classifies laws according to their social functions. Function-based taxonomy can influence legal decision-making indirectly, as a gatekeeping mechanism, but it does not provide decisional standards for courts. Its objective is to assist in analysis and criticism of law by providing an overview …

Toward A Theory Of Morality: An Empirical Study Of Cognitive Moral Development In Market Channel Dyads In The Construction Industry Using The Defining Issues Test, James Nicholas Reischl Jan 2009

Toward A Theory Of Morality: An Empirical Study Of Cognitive Moral Development In Market Channel Dyads In The Construction Industry Using The Defining Issues Test, James Nicholas Reischl

HCBE Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation tackles the ageless human debate of the body versus the soul. Based on Kohlbergian theory, the multidisciplinary literature review advances the proposition that moral development proceeds in waves of referential egoism leading to nonreferential altruism that is couched in power--the apple of the eye.

Many inter organizational studies using the Defining Issues Test have compared moral maturity levels coming from various academic backgrounds. Previous studies have purported that education is the chief moderating variable for moral maturity, with little regard for paradigmatic bases of power. Yet, in this study noncoercive power is carefully controlled because of the highly …

The U.N. Human Rights Council: What Would Eleanor Roosevelt Say?, John Carey

ILSA Journal of International & Comparative Law

The prominent role played by Mrs. Roosevelt in the creation of the United Nations' (U.N.) human rights apparatus is described by William vanden Heuvel in the Fall issue of The InterDependent (Vol. 6 No. 3).' After quoting Henry Kissinger as styling her "one of the great human beings of our time," vanden Heuvel calls her "tough and resolute" as well as "fearless in speaking truth to power."

Towards The Concerted Study Of Caddo Origins, Timothy K. Perttula Jan 2009

Towards The Concerted Study Of Caddo Origins, Timothy K. Perttula

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The study of the origins of any people from an archaeological perspective is a considerable undertaking, one that may task the efforts and thoughts of a multitude of people, probably from several disciplines. After the talking and discussion in the 2008 East Texas Caddo Research Group (ETCRG) meeting about Caddo origins, how do we proceed from here on out to arrive at a more comprehensive understanding of Caddo origins? For the purposes of discussion, I am assuming that the ETCRG participants agree that the concerted study of Caddo origins is an issue and research problem worth undertaking.

I recently had …

Design And Development Research: A Model Validation Case, Monica W. Tracey Jan 2009

Design And Development Research: A Model Validation Case, Monica W. Tracey

Administrative and Organizational Studies

This is a report of one case of a design and development research study that aimed to validate an overlay instructional design model incorporating the theory of multiple intelligences into instructional systems design. After design and expert review model validation, The Multiple Intelligence (MI) Design Model, used with an Instructional Systems Design (ISD) Model, was tested for use by four practicing instructional designers. Instruction developed for learners using this model was then evaluated measuring post-test and attitudinal scores with 102 participants. This report also provides a reflection on the lessons learned in conducting design and development research on model validation. …

Sluicing And Multiple Wh-Fronting., Lydia Grebenyova Jan 2009

Sluicing And Multiple Wh-Fronting., Lydia Grebenyova

Linguistics

This paper explores multiple wh-fronting under Sluicing. Contrary to previous proposals that an interrogative +wh complementizer licenses TP-ellipsis, I propose that +focus feature licenses this ellipsis operation. Assuming the deletion analysis of sluicing, following Ross (1969), I argue for focus-licensed sluicing based on data from Slavic languages like Russian and Polish, where it is possible to have focused R-expressions as remnants of sluicing. I demonstrate how semantic restrictions in multiple interrogatives are maintained under sluicing, presenting a new argument for the clausal structure of the sluice. Finally, I explore Superiority effects under sluicing, deriving those from parallelism in variable binding.

Writing Instruction And Standardized Reading Scores Among Secondary Students, Donna B. Feldman Jan 2009

Writing Instruction And Standardized Reading Scores Among Secondary Students, Donna B. Feldman

ETD Archive

The reading scores on the Nation's Report Card for 2007 indicate that not all children share the same proficiency in literacy. Reading and writing require the use of similar cognitive processes, yet few studies focus on this relationship or how writing can be a tool for reading remediation. The research questions in this study addressed the extent to which: (a) differences occur in the time spent on writing instruction by genre, instructional methodology, and the phase of writing between middle and high school teachers (b) the amount of time teachers provide writing instruction, the instructional methodology, the genre addressed in …
