The Lexington Principles On The Rights Of Detainees: A Transnational Legal Process Approach To Due Process, David Alan Jordan, Frederic L. Kirgis, R. Brooke Lewis, Thomas Greenwood, Bennett L. Ross, Kathryn M. Zunich

Scholarly Articles

In Boumediene v. Bush, decided June 12, 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court extended the constitutional privilege of habeas corpus to noncitizens detained at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Courts will now be called upon to assess the propriety of American detainee treatment practices against unclear constitutional standards. The strength and contours of the due process protections the U.S. Constitution will afford these detainees is still an unsettled question. The Lexington Principles are designed to help guide the development of American due process standards as they move outside our borders. These Principles are also intended to serve as a model for those …

Better Health Through The Salud Para La Vida (Health For Life) Project, Susan Dollar Ph.D., Lcsw, Helen Reid Ph.D., Laraeda Sullivan Rn

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

The Salud para la Vida (Health for Life) project was a demonstration project through the Missouri Foundation for Health which utilized interdisciplinary collaborations to address rural Latino health needs in southwest Missouri. Social workers and other professionals were uniquely qualified to work across counties with church, business, school, emergency management, law enforcement and health clinic leadership in promoting and sustaining the project. Salud para la Vida is worthy of replication in other regions that face similar challenges in providing culturally competent health services to Latino immigrants.

Using Social Emotional Skills In Cooperative Groups To Improve Student Performance, Lisa M. Spath Apr 2009

Using Social Emotional Skills In Cooperative Groups To Improve Student Performance, Lisa M. Spath

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

Student performance may be enhanced socially and academically if all students are given the opportunities to experience social emotional learning (SEL) and cooperative learning by participating in small groups that emphasize SEL skills. Seventy-two eighth grade middle school students registered in one of four eighth grade general science classes participated in this study. Two classes participated in activities that focused on social emotional skills and teamwork at the beginning of the school year. The experimental group performed better than the control group in group assigned projects. Both groups reported working in groups that promoted sharing of ideas, support, cooperation and …

Teaching Cultural Sensitivity To Pediatric Residents, Ralitsa Akins Apr 2009

Teaching Cultural Sensitivity To Pediatric Residents, Ralitsa Akins

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Teaching cultural sensitivity to healthcare professionals is critical in providing appropriate care to diverse patient populations. Constantly increasing U.S. immigrant population and growing numbers of international medical graduates practicing in the U.S. bring the issue of appropriate cross-cultural training to the forefront of addressing health disparities. Cultural competence training of healthcare professionals and provision of culturally sensitive patient care is the responsibility of healthcare leadership.1 Acquiring awareness and knowledge about cultural differences requires focused development of skills to communicate with patients from diverse cultures; this is a process developed through professional training and experience.2 Few professional continuous education programs have …

Actual Exploitation, Simulated Exploitation And A Tin Drum: A Comparative Analysis Of Child Pornography Law In The United States And Canada, Maurice "Mac" Verstandig Apr 2009

Actual Exploitation, Simulated Exploitation And A Tin Drum: A Comparative Analysis Of Child Pornography Law In The United States And Canada, Maurice "Mac" Verstandig

University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review

The United States and Canada two of the world's foremost modern, liberalized societies regularly combat an awkward and painful tension between free speech rights and the wellbeing of minors. Though there generally exists a consensus that child pornography represents a certain dark realm of material outside the oft-amorphous protections afforded speech, the establishment of an acceptable working definition of this criminal fodder has proven contentiously difficult. This paper explores each nation's struggles with this tension, through the lens of legislative efforts, judicial responses, and the productions that seem to perennially blur the line between art and crime. It is ultimately …

"The Most Awful Problem That Any Nation Ever Undertook To Solve": Reconstruction As A Crisis In Citizenship, Allen C. Guelzo Apr 2009

"The Most Awful Problem That Any Nation Ever Undertook To Solve": Reconstruction As A Crisis In Citizenship, Allen C. Guelzo

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

Reconstruction is the step-child of the Civil War, the black hole of American history. It lacks the conflict and the personalities that make the Civil War so colorful; it also lacks the climactic feuds and battles, and dissipates into a confusing and wearisome tale of lost opportunities, squalid victories, and embarrassing defeats whose ultimate endpoint is the great American disgrace - Jim Crow. It lives with the short end of the historical stick for accomplishing too much, then accomplishing too little, with the result that almost the worst thing that can be said about someone in American history is that …

"The Ivory Tower" On An "Unstable Foundation": Playful Language, Humor, And Metaphor In The Negotiation Of Scientists' Identities, L. David Ritchie, Char Schell

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this essay we argue that metaphor and language play generally should be analyzed in the context of actual conversations, not as a peripheral or incidental part of the discourse, but as an integral part of both topic-centered and relational work. We examine several instances of playful metaphor, humor, and irony that occurred during a one-hour focus-group discussion among a group of scientists discussing their role in communicating about science with laypersons. During the course of this discussion, word play, humorous insults, and the elaboration and reconstruction of metaphorical idioms are used for a variety of purposes, including reinforcement of …

Speaking Of Books… Connecting With Faculty Through A Campus Author Series, Timothy Hackman Apr 2009

Speaking Of Books… Connecting With Faculty Through A Campus Author Series, Timothy Hackman

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Abstract

A faculty author speaker series is an effective way to build bridges between academic librarians and the teaching faculty, as well as raise the profile of the university library. To explore the challenges and rewards of hosting such a series, this article presents a history of the series “Speaking of Books… Conversations with Campus Authors” at the University of Maryland. It discusses the details of planning and executing author events, in the hope that others can use this information to host their own lecture series. Finally, it presents a few ideas for future directions of the faculty author series.

MPA Capstone Projects 2006 - 2015

New York City Children's Services (CS) serves an increasing populations of persons with limited English language proficiency (LEP). Federal and local laws mandate that these persons are provided with meaningful language access services. This analysis attempts to find the most cost-effective strategy for CS' Division of Child Protection (DCP) to provide interpretation services to LEP persons involved in DCP cases of child abuse and neglect. The study first identifies alternative strategies for providing these services, and then qualifies the cost of the current methods and alternative methods. A framework of transaction cost economic theory guides the cost analysis process. Next, …

The Development Of Nationalism In The Indian Case, Sriram Madhusoodanan Apr 2009

The Development Of Nationalism In The Indian Case, Sriram Madhusoodanan

Grace Allen Scholars Theses

Narratives, particularly historical narratives, frame our identities: they tell the story of our origins and provide us with direction to guide future action. Considering the numerous movements they have fostered in past 200 years, few identities have been as powerful a motor for social change or emerged as loudly on the world stage as national identities. In this context, India presents a unique case. In attempting to classify it, India could be labeled a multi‐nation state, due to the immense diversity of linguistic, cultural and ethnic groups that reside within it, each with its own particular historical narrative and myths …
