A Clinicians' Guide To Integrating Mindfulness Into Evidence-Based Practice: A Common Elements Approach, Lara Fielding
A Clinicians' Guide To Integrating Mindfulness Into Evidence-Based Practice: A Common Elements Approach, Lara Fielding
Theses and Dissertations
Stemming from Eastern practices, mindfulness entails intentionally bringing one's attention to all aspects of experience in the present moment, and holding these experiences with non-judgmental acceptance. In recent years mindfulness-based interventions have been gaining empirical support together with clinician interest in their use. The APA now mandates the use of evidence-based practices in psychology (EBPP), which incorporate the best empirical evidence, clinical expertise, and individual population characteristics and culture. However, at present, because there have been relatively few dismantling studies, clinicians are forced to either adopt an entire treatment protocol or pick and choose individual interventions in a relatively ad …

In the United States, minority students have lower high school graduation rates. This research was carried out to determine factors that influence seventh grade students' perceptions to complete high school, attend college and select a profession. A survey was conducted to determine whether their goals were influenced by factors such as gender, ethnicity and parental level of education. A total of 273 seventh grade students from a middle in Ventura, California, participated in this survey. From these 273, 211 students reported being very sure that they would graduate from high school, while 62 stated that they will most likely complete …
The Social Goals Of Boys With Adhd: Effect Of Task Variables And Their Relationship With Peer Status, Michal Mayo-Dvir
The Social Goals Of Boys With Adhd: Effect Of Task Variables And Their Relationship With Peer Status, Michal Mayo-Dvir
Theses and Dissertations
Peer rejection is a core difficulty experienced by children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) that is associated with both concurrent and long-term maladjustment. The social goals endorsed by children with ADHD, have been proposed as being among the factors contributing to their relational difficulties. Although previous investigations have examined the social goals selected by ADHD-diagnosed children and their relationship to social status, no studies to date have examined the impact of task variables on the social goals they select or whether the relationship between their social goals and sociometric status is task dependent. This archival study compared the social …
Success Strategies Of High Achieving Women: A Qualitative Phenomenological Investigation, Leslie Ann Evans
Success Strategies Of High Achieving Women: A Qualitative Phenomenological Investigation, Leslie Ann Evans
Theses and Dissertations
According to the latest figures from the U.S. Labor Department, 50% of all managerial posts are held by women, yet few women hold a top position in their organization. Of the 1,000 largest revenue producing, publicly traded companies in the United States, only 20 are led by a woman. Women hold only 15.7% of all senior executive positions in Fortune 500 companies, yet traditional women's leadership styles of open communication and inclusion have been recognized as appropriate and even best practices. Women climbing the corporate ladder face myriad challenges. In addition to the obstacles they face, the very choices women …
The Leaders Of Bushido: A Study Of The Leadership Practices Of Black Belt Martial Artists, Maya Joko
The Leaders Of Bushido: A Study Of The Leadership Practices Of Black Belt Martial Artists, Maya Joko
Theses and Dissertations
Martial arts is an all-encompassing discipline in which the teacher serves as a role model, guide, and leader. Black belt martial artists, especially the ones that teach, have a strong influence on the younger generation who admire and respect their teachers. In this way, martial artists are leaders who have the power to positively influence future leaders of our generation. Despite this fact, there is limited research on how martial arts training might contribute to the development of positive and effective leadership skills. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if there were similarities and/or differences in the …
Communicative Strategies Used In The Introduction Of Spirituality In The Workplace, Matthew Alan Condon
Communicative Strategies Used In The Introduction Of Spirituality In The Workplace, Matthew Alan Condon
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Many organizational leaders and employees have become increasingly interested in implementing some form of spiritual practice or orientation into the fabric of the workplace. A burgeoning field of research and practice has emerged in the past two decades that attempts to address this growing interest. This field is diverse and identified with various titles, the most common being “spirit at work,” “spirituality in the workplace,” “faith at work,” and “faith in the workplace.” Because any cognates of the words “spirit” and “faith” are universally associated with religion, implementing any form of spiritual practice or orientation into a workplace setting comes …
Crossing The Threshold: What Motivates Individuals Who Are Actively Abusing Substances To Enter Treatment?, Katherine Michelle Peavy
Crossing The Threshold: What Motivates Individuals Who Are Actively Abusing Substances To Enter Treatment?, Katherine Michelle Peavy
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Although there is an abundance of research in the area of substance abuse, much of it samples people who are already enrolled in treatment. The treatment seeking population may differ from people who are actively using substances. One aim of this study is to describe a sample of individuals who have not sought out treatment, but still actively use substances. Specifically, the investigators assessed 51 county detention facility inmates recently arrested on drug- or alcohol-related charges, examining the factors that both inhibit and promote treatment seeking. We hypothesized that motivation levels for seeking treatment would differ based on several factors: …

Socially Responsible Advertising In The Fashion And Cosmetic Industry : The Female Consumers’ Perspective, Christine Murphy
Socially Responsible Advertising In The Fashion And Cosmetic Industry : The Female Consumers’ Perspective, Christine Murphy
Theses
This study explores the portrayal of women in advertising in the fashion and cosmetic industry. While traditionally, companies have employed the use of highly attractive thin women known as the thin ideal in their advertisements, there have been some moves in the industry towards the use of women of various ages and sizes in an attempt to celebrate female beauty as a whole instead of focusing on the thin ideal. This has been in response to criticisms of the industry as dominant contributors to high levels of negative body images, dissatisfaction, extreme dieting and eating disorders among girls and women. …

Molecular Characterization Of Gastroenteritis Viruses Among Equines And Porcines In Southern Ireland From 2005-2007., P. J, Collins
Theses
Rotaviruses are a major cause of gastroenteritis in humans and animals. To date, seven serogroups (A to G) of rotavirus have been determined. Group A Rotaviruses (GARVs) are enteric pathogens, causing acute watery dehydrating diarrhea in various host species, including birds and mammals. Rotaviruses account for ~611,000 child deaths each year, mainly in developing countries. Likewise, rotavirus-associated enteritis is a major problem in young calves, weaning and post-weaning piglets and foals. Vaccines against the most important serologic group of rotaviruses (GARVs) are available for the prevention of rotavirus diseases in cows and horses, and, more recently, they have been made …
Do Campus Incubation Centres Provide A Successful Linkage Between Early-Stage Entrepreneurial Ventures And The Irish Institutes Of Technology?, Fiona Fox
Theses
This study is an examination of the issues that are pertinent to the development of linkages, which campus incubation centres provide between their host Institutes of Technology (loT) and their tenant firms. This research incorporates the views, opinions and recommendations of new firm entrepreneurs, campus incubation centre management, senior academic staff and researchers. This study responds to the lacuna of research on campus incubators hosted by the Institutes of Technology. This study confirms that campus business incubators that are affiliated to the loTs are still in their infancy. The research acknowledges that these campus incubators are in a ‘startup’ phase …

Participation And Determinants Of Physical Activity Amongst Irish 3rd Level Students., Jonathan Lerner
Theses
Currently, there is a dearth of research investigating physical activity patterns among Irish third level young adults (17-22 year olds). Both national and international research report that levels of physical activity decline in adolescence, this trend being most pronounced among females. Various biological, psychological, social, and environmental determinants have been found to influence physical activity; however, specific factors associated with the decline in activity during adolescence remain largely unknown. This research study examines participation and determinants of physical activity among Irish third level students.
A “National questionnaire” was administered to a sample of 532 students from Health Education Authority (HEA) …

A Virtual Training Environment For Temporal Bone Surgery, Denis Stack
Theses
A virtual training environment for temporal bone surgery incorporating haptic, visual and audio feedback is presented in this work. Data are derived from Computed Tomography (CT) scans, thus patient-specific cases may be examined in the simulator.
Two main classes of volume haptic algorithm exist for virtual surgery, namely proxy-based and non proxy-based. A review of the evolution of relevant haptic algorithms is presented. Proxy-based and non proxy-based algorithms are implemented and their performance measured against each other by comparison with real-world force data. An improved proxy-based feedback algorithm is also presented. This algorithm uses a spherical proxy which prevents the …

Evidence-based treatments (EBT) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) remain underutilized. Analog research, however, indicates that patients may be more amenable to receiving EBT for PTSD than utilization rates suggest. This study sought to extend previous studies by investigating PTSD treatment preferences among law enforcement individuals (i.e., active duty officers, cadets, criminal justice students). We asked 379 participants, with varying trauma histories, to read a police traumatic event and imagine they had developed PTSD. Participants rated the credibility of six treatment options which they might encounter in a treatment setting, and chose their most and least preferred treatments. Next, they evaluated …

Korean- And English-Speaking Children Use Cross-Situational Information To Learn Novel Predicate Terms, Jane B. Childers, Jae H. Paik
Psychology Faculty Research
This paper examines children’s attention to cross-situational information during word learning. Korean-speaking children in Korea and English speaking children in the US were taught four nonce words that referred to novel actions. For each word, children saw four related events: half were shown events that were very similar (Close comparisons), half were shown events that were not as similar (Far comparisons). The prediction was that children would compare events to each other and thus be influenced by the events shown. In addition, children in these language groups could be influenced differently as their verb systems differ. Although some differences were …
Eighth Amendment Gaps: Can Conditions Of Confinement Litigation Benefit From Proportionality Theory, Alexander A. Reinert
Eighth Amendment Gaps: Can Conditions Of Confinement Litigation Benefit From Proportionality Theory, Alexander A. Reinert
Articles
The article explores the potential benefits of integrating proportionality theory, traditionally used in sentencing, into litigation challenging harsh prison conditions under the Eighth Amendment. It argues that this approach could offer new avenues for addressing the limitations of current conditions of confinement jurisprudence by reimagining how courts evaluate the constitutionality of prison conditions.

Development Of Pcr Assays To Detect And Characterise Salmonella Isolates From Cheese And Meat Products By Utilizing An Integrated Genomics Approach, Noelle Geraldine Mccarthy
Theses
Salmonella is an extremely important foodborne pathogen which is responsible for millions of cases of gastroenteritis annually. Salmonella outbreaks have been associated with numerous common food stuffs such as meat, dairy and seafood. Traditional culture based methods for the detection Salmonella are labourious and costly. Rapid detection and serovar identification would dramatically decrease the time required to identify Salmonella outbreaks and potential health risks.
In the US 99% of all Salmonella infections are caused by members of Salmonella enterica subspecies 1. Serovars within subspecies 1 can vary due to host specificity and pathogenicity. DNA sequencing projects have provided valuable genomic …

The Detection And Analysis Of Selected Pathogens In The Water Supply Of Dairy Cohort Herds., Niall Drummond
Theses
The issue of food safety is a growing concern to Irish agriculture and to the food industry. In the last twenty years, many novel pathogens, which can cause concern to the food industry, have been identified. Organisms such as Verocytotoxigenic Escherichia coli (VTEC) cause hemorrhagic colitis and Haemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), which is the major cause of acute renal failure in children in many countries, and it’s presence in food is a cause of growing concern. Other pathogens causing concern are those implicated as causative agents of Acute Gastroenteritis (AGE) and these can be bacterial, viral and parasitic organisms.

Electrocardiographic Consequences Of Electrical And Anatomical Remodeling In Diabetic And Obese Humans, Shuli Wang
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Background. Diabetes and obesity are two major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Both can cause changes due to cardiac sources in body-surface potentials: BSPs), that is, in electrocardiograms: ECGs). By identifying the major effects of diabetes and obesity on BSPs, we hope to reveal the electrical phenotype of diabetes in body-surface ECGs in the presence of obesity. Methods. A Bidomain Platform was constructed to link heart-surface transmembrane potentials: TMPs) and BSPs. The Forward-Problem Module of the platform calculates BSPs from a bidomain-model of myocyte TMPs and torso anatomy. The platform also contains a Cardio-myocyte TMP Estimation Module in which an …
Investigations Into The Ulnar Response To Mechanical Stimuli Activating Lamellar And Woven Bone Formation, Jennifer Mckenzie
Investigations Into The Ulnar Response To Mechanical Stimuli Activating Lamellar And Woven Bone Formation, Jennifer Mckenzie
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Woven and lamellar bone formation can be stimulated using mechanical loading. Woven bone forms rapidly in response to damaging loading in a disorganized manner with low mineral density. In contrast, lamellar bone formation can be induced in the absence of damage, and is characterized by its slow, organized deposition and high density. In this dissertation, we first examined the molecular response to woven and lamellar bone formation using damaging and non-damaging dynamic loading protocols, respectively. We observed a significant increase in gene expression related to angiogenesis, cell proliferation and osteogenesis prior to woven bone formation, with significantly lower levels of …

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The health of civil structures is very important and sometimes life-critical. While there are different ways to monitor their health, wireless sensor network: WSN) has the advantage of easy deployment and low cost, which make it feasible for most structures. We designed and implemented a system to localize damages on structures with a WSN by detecting the change in structure flexibility. This method has been validated to work well on bridges like a cantilever beam and a truss. It is also possible to be extended to other type of structures. Different from other systems, in network data processing was applied …

Legacy Of Slaughterhouse. Bradwell, And Cruikshank In Constitutional Interpretation, Wilson Huhn
Akron Law Faculty Publications
The Slaughterhouse Cases, Bradwell v. Illinois, and Cruikshank v. United States, which were all decided between 1873 and 1876, were the first cases in which the Supreme Court interpreted the 14th Amendment. The reasoning and holdings of the Supreme Court in those cases have affected constitutional interpretation in ways which are both profound and unfortunate. The conclusions that the Court drew about the meaning of the 14th Amendment shortly after its adoption were contrary to the intent of the framers of that Amendment and a betrayal of the sacrifices which had been made by the people of that period. In …
