Determination Of Diastolic Dysfunction By Conventional And Doppler Tissue Echocardiography In Dogs, Murat Ki̇bar, Mato Markovic, Ursula S. Kolm, Johann Thalhammer

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility and the diagnostic value of conventional Doppler parameters of transmitral inflows and Doppler tissue echocardiography parameters of septal annulus motion for the assessment of diastolic dysfunction in dogs with cardiac failure. The LV diastolic mitral flow patterns were divided into normal diastolic flow pattern (group 1), delayed relaxation pattern (group 2), pseudonormal flow pattern (group 3), and restrictive pattern (group 4). In our study population, 17 patients had normal mitral inflow variables (E/A ratio > 1 and Dt < 109 m). The other 7 patients were classified as having abnormal mitral inflow pattern (E' > 8 cm/s, E'/A' > 1). In conclusion, the combination of Doppler tissue echocardiography of …

Phenotypic Characterisation Of Enterococcus Spp. From Femoral Head Necrosis Lesions Of Chickens, Nevi̇n Oktay, Seran Temelli̇, K. Tayfun Çarli

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Two types of Enterococcus species were isolated from femoral head necrosis lesions of chickens. A total of 150 femoral articular tissues, of which 121 were from commercial broilers, 18 from broiler breeders, and 11 from layer breeders, were sampled. Out of 48 Enterococcus isolates of these clinical samples, 37 and 11 isolates were identified as Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium, respectively. Additionally, 42 (28%) Escherichia coli and 33 (22%) Staphylococcus aureus isolates were obtained either alone or together with 1 of the 2 Enterococcus species from the same clinical samples, while no bacteria were detected from the remaining 56 samples. …

Predicting Outcome In Acute Low Back Pain Using Different Models Of Patient Profiling, Benedict M. Wand, James H. Mcauley, Louise Marston, Lorraine H. De Souza

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Study Design: Prospective observational study of prognostic indicators, utilising data from a randomised, controlled trial of physiotherapy care of acute low back pain (ALBP) with follow up at 6 weeks, 3 months and 6 months.

Objective: To evaluate which patient profile offers the most useful guide to long-term outcome in ALBP.

Summary of Background Data: The evidence used to inform prognostic decision-making is derived largely from studies where baseline data is used to predict future status. Clinicians often see patients on multiple occasions so may profile patients in a variety of ways. It is worth considering if better prognostic decisions …

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

During thymopoiesis, a unique program of gene expression promotes the development of CD4 regulatory T (T reg) cells. Although Foxp3 maintains a pattern of gene expression necessary for T reg cell function, other transcription factors are emerging as important determinants of T reg cell development. We show that the NF-κB transcription factor c-Rel is highly expressed in thymic T reg cells and that in c-rel−/− mice, thymic T reg cell numbers are markedly reduced as a result of a T cell–intrinsic defect that is manifest during thymocyte development. Although c-Rel is not essential for TGF-β conversion of peripheral …

The Development And Testing Of A Relational Model Of Competence In The Context Of Nature-Based Tourism, Christine Marie Oschell Jan 2009

The Development And Testing Of A Relational Model Of Competence In The Context Of Nature-Based Tourism, Christine Marie Oschell

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Communication competence is a framework that has been used in many disciplines to understand communication events and their success or failure in achieving objectives. The model most often used to describe competence is the relational model proposed by Spitzberg & Cupach (1984) which includes three elements: knowledge, knowing what behavior is best suited for a given situation; skill, having the ability to apply that behavior in the given context; and motivation having the desire to communicate in a competent manner. This study used the model of relational competence to understand the communication process between guide and client in a nature-based …

The Effect Of Imagined Interactions On Secret Revelation And Health, Adam Stephens Richards Jan 2009

The Effect Of Imagined Interactions On Secret Revelation And Health, Adam Stephens Richards

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This study examined the influence of imagined interactions on the decision to reveal secrets and some health outcomes. Recent research has only begun to investigate how individuals decide to reveal or conceal secrets. It is accepted that people base decisions to reveal on predictions of expected outcomes of revealing/concealing (Caughlin, Afifi, Carpetner-Theune, & Miller, 2005). Imagined interactions, the imagined cognitive rehearsal of potential conversations, are proposed to serve as a mechanism for making predictions, which influences the decision to reveal. Particularly, imagined interactions where hypothesized to influence one’s expected outcomes and increase one’s confidence in feeling like they can communicate …

Examining The Role Of Grief In The Etiology Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (Ptsd) Symptoms In American Indian Adolescents, Aaron Morsette Jan 2009

Examining The Role Of Grief In The Etiology Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (Ptsd) Symptoms In American Indian Adolescents, Aaron Morsette

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The prevalence of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is reported to be comparatively high in child and adolescent populations (Reinherz, Gaiconia, Leftkowitz, Pakiz, & Frost,1993). However, recent research has suggested that there may be differing etiological factors, specifically, Child Traumatic Grief (CTG), that contributes to the development of PTSD symptoms in American Indian adolescents (Morsette, at al., 2007). First this study demonstrated that CTG symptoms predicted PTSD symptoms above and beyond that which was predicted by violence exposure. Second, it was found that CTG predicted depression above and that which was predicted by PTSD symptoms. Third, it found that grief was …

A Clinical Guide To The Psychosocial Issues Related To Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injuries, Mandy Christen, Becky Hansmeier Jan 2009

A Clinical Guide To The Psychosocial Issues Related To Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injuries, Mandy Christen, Becky Hansmeier

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Children and adolescents who sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) demonstrate changes in personality, such as mood swings, irritability, impulsivity, argumentative behaviors, decreased frustration tolerance, and difficulty cooperating (Prigatano & Gray, 2007; Prigatano & Gray, 2008; Souza, Braga, Filho, & Dellatolas, 2007). These clients also have an increased susceptibility to psychiatric disorders, including mood and anxiety disorders, later in the lifespan as physical and cognitive demands increase (Koponen et al., 2002; Luis & Mittenberg, 2002; Viguier, Dellatolas, Gasquet, Martin, & Choquet, 2001). Despite these substantial risk factors, a significant number of children and adolescents continue to have unrecognized or unmet …

The Next Generation Of Preemption Cases: State Regulation Of 401(K) Plans, Debra A. Davis Jan 2009

The Next Generation Of Preemption Cases: State Regulation Of 401(K) Plans, Debra A. Davis

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

It is not uncommon for state legislatures and the federal government to enact laws that involve similar issues. However, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, as amended (ERISA) provides that state laws are preempted to the extent they relate to employee benefit plans. Since its enactment in 1974, most of the state laws that have been preempted focused on health matters. However, this is likely to change. With many of their constituents lacking adequate retirement benefits as well as the increased attention being placed on 401(k) plans, states are likely to start attempting to legislate in the area …

On The Authority Of The Two-Member Nlrb: Statutory Interpretation Approaches And Judicial Choices, Ronald Turner

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

Is the National Labor Relations Board statutorily empowered by and under Section 3(b) of the National Labor Relations Act to issue decisions and orders when the membership of this five-member agency falls to two active members? This important question, now before the United States Supreme Court, has been considered by several federal courts of appeals in recent rulings addressing challenges to the two-member Board’s adjudicatory power and decision making authority. This essay focuses on the interpretive theories adopted, methodologies employed, and adjudicative choices made by the courts of appeals grappling with the Section 3(b) quorum issue, and argues that the …

An Assessment Of Sexual And Gender Based Violence In Wajir District, North Eastern Kenya, Gladys K. Mwangi, Guyo W. Jaldesa Jan 2009

An Assessment Of Sexual And Gender Based Violence In Wajir District, North Eastern Kenya, Gladys K. Mwangi, Guyo W. Jaldesa

Reproductive Health

A 2006 baseline survey conducted by CARE Kenya indicated that sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is widespread throughout Kenya’s North Eastern Province. Other findings revealed that high levels of stigma and gender imbalances are associated with sexual violence and female genital mutilation (FGM) and that a coordinated approach to responding to the service needs of survivors is missing. As noted in this report, there is limited awareness of the legal mechanisms available to survivors. The Population Council’s study in Wajir District ascertained the need for and possible components of an integrated and comprehensive services model that could meet the needs …

The Millennial Generation: A Demographic, Ethnographic, And Religious Profile, Monte Sahlin

180 Symposium Publications

A new generation is emerging into adulthood in the first years of the new century. Born from 1977 through 1994, most are the offspring of parents in the Baby Boom generation. Just as their parents’ childhood and adolescence largely paralleled the development of television, so the Millennial generation has grown up with the Internet. They share many of the values and interests of their Baby Boomer parents, although the world is starkly different. There is much greater diversity, and global boundaries are transparent, while economic anxiety is increased. The young adults and teens in the Millennial generation tend to be …
