Aim: This research was done to fill the gap in research on the social dimensions of paternity testing by determining the reasons for the suspicion and some characteristics of families who applied for a paternity test. Materials and methods: This research was performed with 50 men that applied for paternity testing. The bi-sectional questionnaire was conducted by means of the interview method. The questionnaire comprised questions on age, education, the reason for and duration of paternity suspicion, domestic violence linked to the paternity suspicion, and plans for the future following the test. Humoral Immunity And Haemoglobin F (Hbf) Status In Steady State Adult Nigerian Sickle Cell Disease Patients With Asymptomatic Malaria, John Ayodele Olaniyi, Olatubosun Ganiyu Arinola

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: Nigeria, where malaria is prevalent, has the largest sickle cell gene pool in the world. To this end, there is a need for increased understanding of the pathophysiology of HbSS patients in a malaria endemic zone to reduce mortality. Haematology Department, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria. Materials and methods: The levels of HbF, IgG, IgA, IgM, transferin (TRF), C-reactive protein (CRP), and haptoglobin (HPT) were determined in 14 Nigerians having HbAA genotype with malaria parasitaemia (HbAA +MP), 17 Nigerians having haemoglobin AA genotype without malaria parasitaemia (HbAA -MP), 15 Nigerians having haemoglobin SS genotype without malaria parasitaemia (HbSS -MP), …

Methodological Approaches To Studying The Social Monad: A Consideration Of Interdisciplinary Sociological Research, Christina Weber Jan 2009

Methodological Approaches To Studying The Social Monad: A Consideration Of Interdisciplinary Sociological Research, Christina Weber

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

In this paper, I explore the methodological considerations involved in conducting research on a historically traumatic event. By focusing on the rich set of social discourses at work within my case study of the Vietnam War, the research emphasized the generational impact of this historically traumatic event through interdisciplinary approach to sociological research. My research included a two-pronged data collection and analysis process. The first consisted of interviews I conducted with children of (male) Vietnam Veterans. The second consisted of textual analyses of film, television, and literature of the Vietnam War and Vietnam Veteran. In this paper I discuss the …

Water Treatment: Keeping It Pure, Petros Katsioloudis Jan 2009

Water Treatment: Keeping It Pure, Petros Katsioloudis

STEMPS Faculty Publications

The article discusses the importance of water treatment in providing quality and safe drinking water. A historical background of the U.S. federal regulation of drinking water quality is presented. It was found by the Public Health Service in 1969 that only 60 percent of the systems surveyed delivered water that met all the Public Health Service standards. Filtration and chlorination are also cited as an effective treatment techniques for protecting U.S. water supplies from harmful microbes. An overview of the process of water treatment is presented.

Green And Roasted Mate: Phenolic Profile And Antioxidant Activity, Ni̇hal Türkmen Erol, Ferda Sari, Eda Çalikoğlu, Y. Sedat Veli̇oğlu

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Mate infusions have been recently and frequently used as dietary supplements because of their health effects to prevent atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease and to be antioxidant. The aim of this study was to determine phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities of green mate (GM) and roasted mate (RM) extracts and compare them with green tea (GT). Total polyphenol content of GM and RM extracts was found to be similar and to range from 237.20 to 438.50 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE) g^{-1} dry extract and from 256.72 to 473.11 mg GAE g^{-1} dry extract depending on the solvent used and …

Streamlining Nepa To Combat Global Climate Change: Heresy Or Necessity?, Irma S. Russell Jan 2009

Streamlining Nepa To Combat Global Climate Change: Heresy Or Necessity?, Irma S. Russell

Faculty Law Review Articles

This article discusses the impact of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) on the development of noncarbon energy sources and raises the question of whether the NEPA process should be altered to bring clean power online faster. The article examines the ability of the market to respond to the call for rapid adaptation to climate change and for rapid development of noncarbon sources of energy, given the regulatory environment and existing regulatory treatment of NEPA processes. In addition, the article examines examples of current streamlining of the NEPA process in the energy arena. The author notes arguments for and against …

This article provides the first comprehensive analysis of when compulsory licensing of patents is permissible as a matter of international law under the Agreement of Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property TRIPS).Thailand's recent compulsory licenses of patents on a variety of medications provide a convenient vehicle to analyze the limits of compulsory licensing under TRIPS. Thailand's actions are unique; most countries hesitate to issue compulsory licenses in the wake of legal uncertainties regarding TRIPS requirements as well as political pressure. This article capitalizes on the many issues involved in Thailand's licenses to provide an authoritative interpretation of the scope of compulsory …

Adaptive Surrogate Modeling For Efficient Coupling Of Musculoskeletal Control And Tissue Deformation Models, Jason P. Halloran, Ahmet Erdemir, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Background

Finite element (FE) modeling and multibody dynamics have traditionally been applied separately to the domains of tissue mechanics and musculoskeletal movements, respectively. Simultaneous simulation of both domains is needed when interactions between tissue and movement are of interest, but this has remained largely impractical due to high computational cost.

Method of Approach

Here we present a method for concurrent simulation of tissue and movement, in which state of the art methods are used in each domain, and communication occurs via a surrogate modeling system based on locally weighted regression. The surrogate model only performs FE simulations when regression from …

Multiresolution Wavelet Analysis Of The Dynamics Of A Cracked Rotor, Jerzy T. Sawicki, Asok K. Sen, Grzegorz Litak Jan 2009

Multiresolution Wavelet Analysis Of The Dynamics Of A Cracked Rotor, Jerzy T. Sawicki, Asok K. Sen, Grzegorz Litak

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

We examine the dynamics of a healthy rotor and a rotor with a transverse crack, which opens and closes due to its self weight. Using discrete wavelet transform, we perform a multiresolution analysis of the measured vibration signal from each of these rotors. In particular, the measured vibration signal is decomposed into eight frequency bands, and the rms amplitude values of the healthy and cracked rotors are compared in the three lowest-frequency bands. The results indicate that the rms vibration amplitudes for the cracked rotor are larger than those of the healthy rotor in each of these three frequency bands. …
