The Predictive Role Of Ast Level, Prothrombin Time, And Platelet Count In The Detection Of Liver Fibrosis In Patients With Chronic Hepatitis C, Özlem Kandemi̇r, Gürbüz Polat, Güli̇z Saraçoğlu, Bahar Taşdelen
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Aim: We aimed to assess the predictive value of a combination some of basic serum biochemical markers for the diagnosis of clinically significant fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C. Materials and methods: Blood samples from 68 patients with chronic hepatitis C infection were analyzed for aspartate aminotransferase, prothrombin INR, and platelet count. The liver histopathology was evaluated using the Knodell protocol. The relationship between the serum biochemical markers and severity of the stages were examined. Results: A strong association was found between the fibrosis stage and platelet count and GUCI (P < 0.001, P = 0.035 respectively) but not APRI ([AST/ULN] / Platelet count [ ×109 /L]) × 100) (P = 0.052). The relationship between the platelet count

The Relationship Of Serum Cea And Ca 19-9 Levels To Liver Metastasis And Pancreatic Invasion In Esophageal Cancer, Ati̇la Türkyilmaz, Ati̇lla Eroğlu, Yener Aydin, Nuretti̇n Karaoğlanoğlu
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Aim: Previous studies have examined levels of CEA and CA 19-9 in esophageal cancer patients, but have not determined a significant relationship between CEA and CA 19-9 levels and liver metastasis and pancreatic invasion in patients with esophageal cancer. In this study, we compared the serum levels of CEA and CA 19-9 in patients with esophageal cancer with and without liver and pancreatic metastasis. Materials and methods: The serum levels of CEA and CA 19-9 were measured in clinic patients between January 2007 and January 2008, including 10 patients with liver metastasis (4) and pancreas invasion (6), and 40 patients …

Aim: To describe the clinical characteristics and outcome of optic neuritis (ON) cases treated with high dose intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP) in a tertiary referral clinic in Ankara, Turkey. Materials and methods: Consecutive patients in the past 5 years with acute isolated ON, who were treated with IVMP and had a follow-up of at least 3 months, were reviewed. Symptoms and findings, results of brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), etiologies, visual outcomes, and side effects of the treatment were evaluated. Results: Etiological causes could be elicited in 57 (85.1%) of 67 patients; the most common of which was multiple sclerosis (MS). …

Aim: To report our experience with gadolinium enhanced computed tomography angiography (Gd-CTA) for end-stage liver disease patients who are candidates for liver transplantation as an alternative to iodinated contrast enhanced CTA and gadolinium enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) angiography. Materials and methods: Seventeen patients with end-stage liver disease were evaluated with Gd-CTA. The patients were 10 men (58.8%) and 7 women (41.1%) (age range: 37-59 years). Multidetector CT (MDCT) was performed using 16-detector-row CT scanners. 3D images of the celiac artery, superior mesenteric artery, portal vein, and inferior vena cava (IVC) were obtained for thorough assessment using multiple plane reconstruction and …

Methodological Approaches To Studying The Social Monad: A Consideration Of Interdisciplinary Sociological Research, Christina Weber
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
In this paper, I explore the methodological considerations involved in conducting research on a historically traumatic event. By focusing on the rich set of social discourses at work within my case study of the Vietnam War, the research emphasized the generational impact of this historically traumatic event through interdisciplinary approach to sociological research. My research included a two-pronged data collection and analysis process. The first consisted of interviews I conducted with children of (male) Vietnam Veterans. The second consisted of textual analyses of film, television, and literature of the Vietnam War and Vietnam Veteran. In this paper I discuss the …

The article discusses the importance of water treatment in providing quality and safe drinking water. A historical background of the U.S. federal regulation of drinking water quality is presented. It was found by the Public Health Service in 1969 that only 60 percent of the systems surveyed delivered water that met all the Public Health Service standards. Filtration and chlorination are also cited as an effective treatment techniques for protecting U.S. water supplies from harmful microbes. An overview of the process of water treatment is presented.

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Mate infusions have been recently and frequently used as dietary supplements because of their health effects to prevent atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease and to be antioxidant. The aim of this study was to determine phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities of green mate (GM) and roasted mate (RM) extracts and compare them with green tea (GT). Total polyphenol content of GM and RM extracts was found to be similar and to range from 237.20 to 438.50 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE) g^{-1} dry extract and from 256.72 to 473.11 mg GAE g^{-1} dry extract depending on the solvent used and …

This article discusses the impact of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) on the development of noncarbon energy sources and raises the question of whether the NEPA process should be altered to bring clean power online faster. The article examines the ability of the market to respond to the call for rapid adaptation to climate change and for rapid development of noncarbon sources of energy, given the regulatory environment and existing regulatory treatment of NEPA processes. In addition, the article examines examples of current streamlining of the NEPA process in the energy arena. The author notes arguments for and against …
