Concussion is the most common form of traumatic brain injury, and a substantial fraction of those affected develop post-concussion syndrome (PCS), a condition characterized by persistent cognitive, emotional, physical, and sleep symptoms for which no definitive treatment currently exists. Transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM), the delivery of near-infrared (NIR) light to brain tissue, has shown promise for addressing the metabolic dysfunction that underlies concussion. Still, commercially available tPBM devices rely on fixed, open-loop protocols and do not integrate electroencephalography (EEG), limiting a clinician’s ability to monitor neural biomarkers during treatment. Our team’s objective was to develop a system that utilizes tPBM to …

Blink & Beat: Pupillometry Response In Autonomic Nervous System Monitoring, Ximena Castillo
2026 Spring Honors Capstones Projects
In the neuroscience intensive care unit (NSICU), nurses rely on advanced monitoring tools to detect neurological deterioration. Two noninvasive measures, heart rate variability (HRV) and pupillary light reflex (PLR), are used to assess autonomic nervous system function; however, it remains unclear whether these indicators provide overlapping or distinct information. The purpose of this observational prospective study is to evaluate the relationship between HRV and quantitative pupillometry measurements to determine whether these noninvasive indicators provide congruent information. Data already collected as routine care from NSICU patients is extracted from the medical record for analysis. Understanding the correlation between HRV and PLR …

Internal Medicine, East Africa
Background: Musculoskeletal injuries are common among athletes and can negatively affect both physical and psychological wellbeing. Beyond physical disability, injuries have been linked to poor mental health, loss of athletic identity, and increased substance use. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where awareness and management of mental health remain limited, the psychological burden of sports injuries may be underrecognized. Rugby, a physically demanding contact sport, has one of the highest rates of injury, but little is known about how such injuries influence mental health and related outcomes in African contexts. This study explored the relationship between musculoskeletal injuries and health …

The RF model showed strong performance with R-squared and RMSE values of 0.95 and 18.46 for the training dataset and 0.75 and …
Active Measures, Jacob Campbell
Active Measures, Jacob Campbell
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Active Measures is a Cold War era espionage drama, written for television. In the story, two mid-level agents in a centrally located, yet functionally unimportant CIA station are scapegoated after a high-level defection is sabotaged by an unknown mole, resulting in the defector’s death. Having found intelligence sewn into the defector’s jacket, the agents, John O’Neil and Sam Rosen, attempt to pursue his lead and clear their names while under internal investigation.
The story is influenced by the moral ambiguity of espionage novels by Alan Furst and John le Carre, and the television series The Americans. Like these predecessors, …
Ai Interpretability In Healthcare Communication, Ananya Jeyappragash
Ai Interpretability In Healthcare Communication, Ananya Jeyappragash
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Artificial intelligence has increasingly been adopted in healthcare, largely for specialized tasks and under significant human oversight. The use of large black-box systems raises important concerns about transparency in high-stakes environments such as clinical decision-making. Clinical communication is fundamentally human-centered, and failures in judgment can have serious consequences for patient care. Overestimating the reasoning abilities of large language models may lead to undue trust in fabricated or “hallucinated” outputs, while rejecting AI-assisted tools altogether may preserve inefficient workflows and contribute to missed or delayed diagnoses. These concerns reflect a broader tradeoff between accuracy and interpretability: although more complex models may …

Short-Term Electricity Price Forecasting With Constrained Regressors, Mucun Sun, Li Zhang, Yifeng Gao
Computer Science Faculty Publications
The volatility of electricity price presents a challenge to market participants as their decision-making process are highly depend on the accuracy of price forecasts. However, there is growing empirical evidence of increasing price volatility and price spikes in electricity markets as a result of variable renewable energy generation, extreme weather events, and other factors. The distribution shift caused by spikes in electricity price data differentiates the forecasting tasks from other renewable energy sources. Moreover, the observations may be compromised by cyberattacks and thus not available in the testing phase. To this end, we propose a Similarity-Enhanced Electricity Decomposition Forecasting model …

Microplastics (MPs) are defined as small plastic particles that come from the degradation of plastics [Ziani et al. 2023], that hold a regular or irregular shape, ranging from 1μm to 5 mm [Campanale et al. 2025]. This diminutive size makes them virtually impossible to remove once released into the environment[Lee et al. 2023]. Furthermore, biological, chemical, and physical processes break MP's further down in the environment, causing them to exist in nano-level sizes (1nm-1μm) [Lee et al. 2023], further exacerbating their threat to critical habitats. However, recent studies have shown MP contamination expands beyond the natural environment as recent studies …

Mapping Sensory Landscapes: Distribution And Arrangement Of The Anterior Lateral Line System In Texas Catfish, Tatiana Flores, Ruben Tovar
Mapping Sensory Landscapes: Distribution And Arrangement Of The Anterior Lateral Line System In Texas Catfish, Tatiana Flores, Ruben Tovar
Research Papers
Fish have a system of sensory organs known as the lateral line system. This system contains numerous mechanoreceptive neuromasts and electroreceptive ampullary organs (Northcutt et al, 2000). Neuromasts are small, hair-like structures located within canals in the lateral line system just under the fish’s skin and are open to the environment through small pores visible on its skin (Parker, 2025). Water flows into these canals through the pores which stimulates the sensitive hair cells, resulting in electrical signals sent to the fish’s brain. The brain interprets these signals and creates “images” of the fish’s surroundings, helping it to see even …

Dental Insurance Status Among Formerly Incarcerated Older Adults, Alexander Testa, Rafael Samper-Ternent, Dylan B Jackson, Kyle T Ganson, Vahed Maroufy, Jason M Nagata, Ana C Neumann
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Formerly incarcerated individuals have poorer oral health and less frequent dental care utilization than the general population. However, prior work has overlooked the relationship between prior incarceration and disparities in dental insurance coverage. Using data from the Health and Retirement Study (n = 11,638), findings from multiple logistic regression analyses demonstrate that formerly incarcerated older adults are significantly less likely to have dental insurance coverage (odds ratio [OR] = 0.745, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.608, 0.912). After accounting for the income-to-poverty ratio, this association was no longer statistically significant. Analyses using the Karlson-Holm-Breen method demonstrated that approximately 45% of …

People in recovery with histories of sex and drug-linked behavior (SDB) have an increased risk of substance use recurrence. However, sexual health concerns remain largely unaddressed by recovery support services researchers and practitioners. The purpose of this analysis was to describe the sex and relationship concerns of people in recovery for an opioid use disorder living in level II and level III recovery homes. Recovery homes are sober living homes that the National Association for Recovery Residences classifies into four levels based on staffing and service provision. We interviewed 93 residents and thematically analyzed 92 of the resulting transcripts; one …

Background: Atrial septal defects (ASDs) are a prevalent type of congenital heart disease. Previous GWAS (Genome-Wide Association Studies) have identified common variants associated with ASDs, though their mechanisms remain unknown. We aimed to expand insights into the architecture of common variants associated with ASD risk and elucidate functional mechanisms.
Methods: We conducted a GWAS using isolated ASD cases and healthy controls and replicated findings in an independent cohort. We examined epigenetic marks within this ASD locus in human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes and fetal human hearts. We characterized the consequences of deletions introduced by CRISPR-Cas9 mutagenesis of human induced …

Climate change amplifies many threats to human health. Despite advances in understanding climate change dynamics and impacts, there remains a critical gap in translating scientific knowledge into equitable, and community‐driven health interventions. The inaugural One Earth, One Health workshop sought to explore this gap through human‐centered design exercises involving interdisciplinary researchers from climate and Earth sciences, engineering, epidemiology, microbiology, and environmental health. Although participants did not co‐develop solutions with affected communities, they used stakeholder role‐playing to guide ideation and lay groundwork for actionable plans. Through these methods, participants identified community needs and proposed prototype solutions to alleviate health threats …

Objective: To determine the consequences of the Gobeille v. Liberty Mutual Supreme Court decision on the representativeness of the Massachusetts all-payer claims database (APCD). The loss of individuals captured in the APCD may vary demographically, geographically, and in the capture of fatal opioid-related overdose (OOD).
Data sources and study setting: We used 2013-2021 data from the Massachusetts Public Health Data Warehouse (PHD), which links person-level APCD records to other datasets. The APCD includes commercially-insured health claims mandatorily reported pre-Gobeille. Post-Gobeille, reporting from self-insured plans, a subset of commercially-insured plans, became voluntary.
Study design: In a repeated cross-sectional design, we compared …
Patenting The Unexpected, Sean B. Seymore
Patenting The Unexpected, Sean B. Seymore
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Unexpected discoveries have transformed human existence. They’ve revolutionized science and spawned entire new fields of research. While unexpected discoveries seem inventive and worthy of patent protection, they don’t formally align with traditional patent theory. The bedrock principle that an invention begins with the conception of an idea in the inventor’s mind and ends with implementation doesn’t apply to unexpected discoveries. This misalignment is most acute for pharmaceuticals, where the discovery of new uses for old drugs has tremendous social and economic importance. Since a drug can inherently treat multiple conditions in a patient—even those unknown to the patient, doctor, or …

Coping Under Constraint: How Consumer Vulnerability And Caregiver Status Shape Food Choice And Well-Being, Kerry-Ann V. Forbes, Prachi Gala
Coping Under Constraint: How Consumer Vulnerability And Caregiver Status Shape Food Choice And Well-Being, Kerry-Ann V. Forbes, Prachi Gala
AMTP Proceedings 2026
Caregiving is a chronic and understudied form of consumer vulnerability that reshapes everyday decision-making, particularly in food contexts. This research conceptualizes caregiving as a sustained role-based vulnerability. It proposes a moderated-mediation model in which consumer vulnerability influences coping strategies that subsequently affect food choice and consumer well-being. Drawing on the Theory of Planned Behavior, Coping Theory, and Transformative Consumer Research, the study examines how caregiver status (familial, professional, or non-caregiver) serves as a boundary condition that shapes these relationships. A three-phase mixed-methods design is employed: qualitative interviews to refine constructs, a survey–experiment to test the moderated-mediation model, and an experimental …
Exploring The Psychological Health Of First Responder Women And Their Children, Shelby S. Deschepper
Exploring The Psychological Health Of First Responder Women And Their Children, Shelby S. Deschepper
Honors Thesis
Abstract
First responders (law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians) often face occupational stressors and may have exposure to traumatic events. As a result, they are at risk for developing mental health conditions. Although there is substantial research on first responder mental health, potential gender differences within this population have received limited attention. The existing evidence suggests that first responders who are women encounter an even higher risk for adverse mental health outcomes than first responders who are men. Additionally, few studies have explored the mental health outcomes of children with first responder parents, and even fewer have …
