Nebraska's Corporate-Farming Law And Discriminatory Effects Under The Dormant Commerce Clause, Anthony Schutz Jan 2009

Nebraska's Corporate-Farming Law And Discriminatory Effects Under The Dormant Commerce Clause, Anthony Schutz

Nebraska Law Review

Laws dealing with agriculture have generated a great deal of constitutional law. This Article explores one more recent example. Corporate- farming laws are one hallmark of agricultural law. They regulate the use of limited liability business forms for owning agricultural land, engaging in production agriculture, or both on approximately 312 million acres of farmland in nine states. That is approximately 77% of the land in those states and approximately one-third of all farmland in the United States. These regulations generally take the form of restricting the use of limited liability to those producers that the legislature or electorate have deemed …

The Blind Men And The Elephant: Learning A Little At A Time About Civic Engagement, Melanie Moore Kubo, Ashley Mckenna Jan 2009

The Blind Men And The Elephant: Learning A Little At A Time About Civic Engagement, Melanie Moore Kubo, Ashley Mckenna

The Foundation Review

· This article, written from the perspective of the evaluator, describes what happened in one community in which four noncollaborating funders were supporting community development programs.

· The Treeline Collaborative evolved from grassroots origins to become a leading organization in the community, serving as a one-stop shop for many programs and providing a structure for civic engagement of residents.

· A collaborative evaluation would have enabled a deeper understanding of the Treeline Collaborative, the outcomes it attained and missed, and the multiple roles it plays in the community, perhaps leading to more effective program and funding decisions.

Woods Of A Miocene Petrified Forest Near Ankara, Turkey, Ünal Akkemi̇k, Necla Türkoğlu, Imogen Poole, İhsan Çi̇çek, Nesi̇be Köse, Gürcan Gürgen

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The taxonomic composition of a recently discovered silicified fossil forest, preserved by volcanic activity 18.2-16.9 million years ago in Çamlıdere near Ankara (Turkey), is investigated. Many samples collected were divided into 2 groups as CAM1 and CAM2. Thin sections from transversal, radial, and tangential directions were cut to identify the woods. Wood identifications were performed using standard techniques and fossil wood features. The preserved wood indicates that the forest was composed almost exclusively of Taxodium (CAM1) and Sequoia (CAM2). These genera were extinct from Anatolia and Europe during late Miocene.

Geochemical And Mineralogical Characteristics Of Fe-Ni Laterite Ore Of Sarıçimen (Çaldıran-Van) Area In Eastern Anatolia, Turkey, Ali̇ Riza Çolakoğlu Jan 2009

Geochemical And Mineralogical Characteristics Of Fe-Ni Laterite Ore Of Sarıçimen (Çaldıran-Van) Area In Eastern Anatolia, Turkey, Ali̇ Riza Çolakoğlu

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Sarıçimen Fe-Ni laterite ore is located 15 km east of Çaldıran County, northeast of Lake Van. This area is situated in the eastern Anatolia accretionary complex of Turkey, close to the Iran boundary. It is the first transported Fe-Ni rich laterite to be described from this area. This paper concentrates on the mineralogical and textural features of the ore minerals and the transported Fe-Ni laterite zone. These transported laterites are very inhomogeneous and contain very abundant zoned chromite grains, which have been altered to magnetite. SEM/probe investigations indicate that Fe-Ni is depleted in the core chromite and increases in …

Optically Stimulated Luminescence To Date Coastal Dunes And A Possible Tsunami Layer On The Kavak Delta (Saros Gulf, Nw Turkey), Ahmet Evren Ergi̇nal, Nafi̇ye Kiyak Güneç, Hasan Özcan

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating was used to determine the timing of initial dune formation and reconstruct the evolution of coastal dunes that developed on the Kavak Delta, Saros Gulf, Turkey. Along a 500-m-long representative transect, dune sands were extracted from foredune, semistable (grey) dune, stable (dark) dune and dune-swamp boundary defined by a scarp 50-75 cm high. The data obtained showed that dune drift initiated 670 years ago. A pumice layer 15-20-cm-thick interbedded with marine clay and sand showed an OSL age of 340 years coinciding with underlying dune sand. XRF analysis showed that pumices were of similar composition …

In the present study Opisthobranchia species collected along the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts of Turkey in 2004 and 2005 were evaluated. Samples were taken from Çanakkale Strait and the northern coast of Gelibolu Peninsula in the northern Aegean Sea, and from Bodrum, Bay of Fethiye, Kaş, and Adrasan along Turkey´s Mediterranean coast. Sampling was carried out by means of scuba diving. In some locations a bottom dredge sampler was used. In all, 321 individuals were collected, representing 30 species from 7 orders. Among the sampled species, 8 are new …

A Crooked Picture: Re-Framing The Problem Of Child Sexual Abuse, Eric S. Janus Jan 2009

A Crooked Picture: Re-Framing The Problem Of Child Sexual Abuse, Eric S. Janus

Faculty Scholarship

This article discusses the problem of ending child sexual abuse using an allegory explaining that certain types of punitive solutions as solving the river "downstream", or in problem-solving mode, as opposed to "upstream", or in prospective problem avoidance. The thesis of this brief article is that our public policy is focused too far downstream. We rightly condemn child sexual abuse, but our public discourse frames the issue in a way that misdirects our public policy towards downstream solutions. If we truly want to protect our children from sexual abuse and end the cycle of violence, we need to reframe the …

Animal Helminths In Human Archaeological Remains: A Review Of Zoonoses In The Past, Luciana Sianto, Marcia Chame, Cassius S. P. Silva, Marcelo L. C. Gonçalves, Karl Reinhard, Martín Horacio Fugassa, Adauto Araújo Jan 2009

Animal Helminths In Human Archaeological Remains: A Review Of Zoonoses In The Past, Luciana Sianto, Marcia Chame, Cassius S. P. Silva, Marcelo L. C. Gonçalves, Karl Reinhard, Martín Horacio Fugassa, Adauto Araújo

Karl Reinhard Publications

The authors present a review of records of intestinal parasitic helminths from animals in human archaeological remains, reported since the emergence of paleopathological studies. The objective was to relate paleoparasitological findings to geographic, biotic, and abiotic factors from the environment in which the prehistoric populations lived, and understand some aspects related to the process of human dispersion and biological and cultural evolution. Modification of eating habits and the incorporation of new cultural practices are analyzed from the perspective of zoonoses from prehistory to the present day, especially in Brazilian indigenous populations. Three tables identifying the helminths, their natural hosts, dates, …

Declining Global Per Capita Agricultural Production And Warming Oceans Threaten Food Security, Chris C. Funk, Molly E. Brown Jan 2009

Declining Global Per Capita Agricultural Production And Warming Oceans Threaten Food Security, Chris C. Funk, Molly E. Brown

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

Despite accelerating globalization, most people still eat food that is grown locally. Developing countries with weak purchasing power tend to import as little food as possible from global markets, suffering consumption deficits during times of high prices or production declines. Local agricultural production, therefore, is critical to both food security and economic development among the rural poor. The level of local agricultural production, in turn, will be determined by the amount and quality of arable land, the amount and quality of agricultural inputs (fertilizer, seeds, pesticides, etc.), as well as farm-related technology, practices and policies. This paper discusses several emerging …

Unearthing Archaeology: A Study Of The Recent Coverage Of Selected English-Language Archaeology Journals By Multi-Subject Indexes And By Anthropological Literature, David C. Tyler, Yang Xu, Emily Dust Nimsakont Jan 2009

Unearthing Archaeology: A Study Of The Recent Coverage Of Selected English-Language Archaeology Journals By Multi-Subject Indexes And By Anthropological Literature, David C. Tyler, Yang Xu, Emily Dust Nimsakont

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Librarians, faculty, and professional researchers, and students already encounter difficulties in locating journal articles for the field of archaeology, yet, in the current budgetary climate, librarians needing to reduce subscription costs may be tempted to cancel smaller, discipline-specific indexes in favor of large multi- subject indexes with broad coverage. This study examines and compares the coverage provided to 208 archaeology and archaeology-related journals and magazines by six multi-subject indexes (Academic Search Premier, ArticleFirst, eLibrary, IngentaConnect, Wilson OmniFile, Web of Science) and by anthropology’s primary index, Anthropological Literature, over a twenty year period (1988–2007).

From The Self To The Nation: Willpower In José María Salaverría, Iker González-Allende Jan 2009

From The Self To The Nation: Willpower In José María Salaverría, Iker González-Allende

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

José María Salaverría’s (1873-1940) inclusion into Spain’s so-called Generation of 1898 seems questionable for many critics. In classical studies about the writers of this generation, such as those by José Luis Abellán, Donald Shaw or Inman Fox, Salaverría is not present. Even in more recent works, for instance Nuevas perspectivas sobre el 98 (1999), edited by John Gabriele, or Spain’s 1898 Crisis (2000), edited by Joseph Harrison, no chapter investigates Salaverría’s contributions to Spanish literature in this period. Salaverría shares many characteristics with the members of the Generation of 1898: He was born in the same era, grew up in …

Ground And Surface Temperature Variability For Remote Sensing Of Soil Moisture In A Heterogeneous Landscape, Mario A. Giraldo, David Bosch, Marguerite Madden, Lynn Usery, Michael Finn

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

At the Little River Watershed (LRW) heterogeneous landscape near Tifton Georgia US an in situ network of stations operated by the US Department of Agriculture–Agriculture Research Service-Southeast Watershed Research Lab (USDA–ARS-SEWRL) was established in 2003 for the long term study of climatic and soil biophysical processes. To develop an accurate interpolation of the in situ readings that can be used to produce distributed representations of soil moisture (SM) and energy balances at the landscape scale for remote sensing studies, we studied (1) the temporal and spatial variations of ground temperature (GT) and infra-red temperature (IRT) within 30 by 30 m …

Retrieval Of Subpixel Snow Covered Area, Grain Size, And Albedo From Modis, Thomas H. Painter, Karl Rittger, Ceretha Mckenzie, Peter Slaughter, Robert E. Davis, Jeff Dozier

United States Army: Publications

We describe and validate a model that retrieves fractional snow-covered area and the grain size and albedo of that snow from surface reflectance data (product MOD09GA) acquired by NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The model analyzes the MODIS visible, near infrared, and shortwave infrared bands with multiple endmember spectral mixtures from a library of snow, vegetation, rock, and soil. We derive snow spectral endmembers of varying grain size from a radiative transfer model specific to a scene's illumination geometry; spectra for vegetation, rock, and soil were collected in the field and laboratory. We validate the model with fractional snow …

'Formerly The Property Of A Lawyer’: Books That Shaped Louisiana Law, Florence M. Jumonville Ph.D.

Library Faculty Publications

Books are indispensable to lawyers and judges, containing as they do the official record of the laws that define rights, liberties, and behavior, as well as the accumulated wisdom with which those laws have been interpreted. Law books were particularly important during the formative years of the American nation, from its founding until the Civil War, as the young federal government and each state developed its unique legal literature. This study focuses on the sources that shaped Louisiana law by examining collections that were developed during approximately the first fifty years after the Louisiana Purchase by six New Orleans attorneys, …

Lao Health And Adjustment In Southern New England Three Decades After The Secret War, Patrick F. Clarkin

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications

This study explored Lao life histories, health, and social adjustment in the southern New England states of Rhode Island and Connecticut. In addition, it sought to examine whether there was a correlation between war experiences early in life and health in adulthood, a finding reported in previous research on the Hmong, another ethnic group from Laos. Overall, 99 Lao adults born in Laos or Thailand (mean age 43.5 +/- 10.8 years) completed orally administered questionnaires and were measured for blood pressure and various anthropometric markers. Lao in this sample appeared to have higher than average educational back grounds in Laos, …
