Mostly Haunted: A Socio-Spatial Analysis Of Ghost Tourism In England And Wales, Tom Clark, Joseph O. Baker, Christoper D. Bader

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

There is now a well-established literature on ghost tourism. However, much of this work examines aspects associated with the demand side of the industry, or the motivations and experiences of consumers. There are currently no studies that have sought to explore the supply of ghost tourism and the spatial, social, and economic relationships that exist between these places. Using Lower Tier Local Authorities (LTLAs) in England and Wales as the units of analysis, this study draws on a bespoke range of local government and Census data to examine the prevalence of ghost tourism and explore how these sites are differentiated …

Place And Time: Interrogating The Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Social Vulnerability In Tennessee, Max Bangham Dixon Mar 2026

Place And Time: Interrogating The Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Social Vulnerability In Tennessee, Max Bangham Dixon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Social vulnerability is essential for research and as a framework in disaster management. Despite a common understanding that social vulnerability is spatially and temporally variable, the ways in which it is variable are not well understood. This research examines the dynamic nature of social vulnerability through two indices (SoVI and SVI) at a census tract-level using Fuzzy-C Means clustering and spatial analyses. Drivers of vulnerability are examined to understand what influences place-based vulnerability and discover how those drivers vary across space. Findings suggest that Fuzzy-C Means clustering is effective in creating interpretable groups of vulnerability indicators that are consistent with …

A Segmentation Of Buildings From Multi-Scene Drone Images Using Deep Learning Models: Case Study- A Car Multi-Story Garage In The Camp Of The University Of Technology, Akram Jalil, Imzahim Alwan

Engineering and Technology Journal

Accurate building segmentation is essential for urban planning, monitoring, and mapping. Most deep learning approaches rely on single-view images, limiting segmentation accuracy due to the loss of spatial context. This re-search proposes a multi-view deep learning framework that integrates features extracted from four pre-trained CNN models—MobileNetV2, Res-Net50, VGG16, and InceptionV3—to capture multi-angle and multi-scale details. A vision transformer is employed to fuse and refine these features, enhancing global context and boundary precision. The proposed method was evaluated using UAV imagery of a multi-story garage at the University of Technology, captured by a DJI Mavic 2 Pro with a high-resolution Hasselblad …

Mapping Agricultural Lands At Risk Of Meteorological Drought In Iraq Using Geostatistics, Mohammed Azeez, Hisham Al Sharaa, Abdul Razzak Ziboon

Engineering and Technology Journal

Identifying vulnerable agricultural lands at risk of meteorological drought is challenging for researchers. Its complexity lies in the fact that agricultural lands are irrigated by two sources: rain and rivers. In this research, we have developed a geostatistical model to separate river-dependent lands unaffected by meteorological drought waves and land vulnerable to the risk of meteorological drought. The inputs of this geostatistical model are the vegetation index and the humidity index extracted from Landsat 8, the rainfall from CHIRPS, and the LULC from ESA. The correlation between the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), the Normalized Difference Moisture Index (NDMI), and …

Between Peaks And Traditions: Indigenous Andean Women Mountaineers, Hybrid Identities, And Decolonial Resistance Through Sport, Ilina Arsova, Lars Dzikus Mar 2026

Between Peaks And Traditions: Indigenous Andean Women Mountaineers, Hybrid Identities, And Decolonial Resistance Through Sport, Ilina Arsova, Lars Dzikus

Journal of Global South Sport Studies

This paper explores the hybrid identities of Indigenous Bolivian women mountaineers, focusing on how they embrace and resist elements of both Indigenous and Western traditions through sports. Challenging dominant Western narratives of mountaineering (Rak, 2021), these women engage in climbing as an act of cultural preservation (Haynes, 2013; Rak, 2021) and gender advocacy (U.N. Women, 2021). Informed by Indigenous feminism (Caravajal, 2019; Green, 2020) and social identity theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1979), the study explores the intersections of gender, culture, and mountain sports in the South American Andes. Through an interpretivist lens, this study uses narrative inquiry (Clandinin & Connelly, …

Korean Words In The Oed: Race, Gender, And The Modern English Speaker, Elaine W. Chun Mar 2026

Korean Words In The Oed: Race, Gender, And The Modern English Speaker, Elaine W. Chun

Faculty Publications

This article examines representations of the Modern English Speaker of Korean (MESK) in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), as lexicographers listened to and documented the language of this figure over the past century. I show that, until the early twenty-first century, the most salient type of MESK was the Koreanist, a white, masculine expert on and translator of Korean, the language of a racial other. By contrast, more recent Korean entries, influenced by the global spread of hallyu, have invoked the Korea Fan, a figure that potentially unsettles longstanding ideologies of language, race, and gender. I …

« From Ground Zero » Et « Letters » : Carnets Polyphoniques En Quête D’Intersubjectivité, Eve Le Fessant Coussonneau

Regards

The two polyphonic films From Ground Zero (2025, produced by Rashid Masharawi) and Letters (2025, produced by Josef Khallouf) bring together, in response to the war in Gaza, unique short films, letters and chronicles that address collective questions. How do these films take charge of the urgent need to problematize, aesthetically and politically, the relationship between subjectivity and the collective? From the Palestinian enclave or neighboring Lebanon, they seek irreducible singularities and intersubjective connections in the face of the horror of genocide. Caught in a complex combination of places and times, their address to our spectatorial gaze thus reveals the …

Carnets De Bord. Tables D’Orientation « Tariq Teguia », Pascale Cassagnau, Tariq Teguia

Regards

This interview by Pascale Cassagnau with Tariq Teguia puts into perspective the Algerian filmmaker’s work notebooks, which are both autonomous objects and working documents, linked to the film itself. A medium for thought, the notebook is a space for language, a score and a cartographic space that gives shape to the writing of the film in a graphic way. A discursive space parallel to the space of scriptwriting, the notebook accompanies the development of the film from its inception, collecting the writing of thought in no particular chronological order.

Sonorisation De L’Anarchive Ou La Palestine Comme Projet Politique – À L’Écoute De « A Fidai Film » De Kamal Aljafari Et De « Partition » De Diana Allan, Judith Abensour Mar 2026

Sonorisation De L’Anarchive Ou La Palestine Comme Projet Politique – À L’Écoute De « A Fidai Film » De Kamal Aljafari Et De « Partition » De Diana Allan, Judith Abensour

Regards

Kamal Aljafari’s A Fidai Film draws on Palestinian archives confiscated by Israel in Beirut in 1982. Diana Allan created Partition using archives from Mandatory Palestine held at the Imperial War Museum in London. The film notebook not only refers to a type of fragmentary editing, but also allows us to revisit the relationship between sound and image, thus offering an exercise in remembrance in the present. By adding sound to images, the two filmmakers question the contradictions inherent in archives, their erasure or their resistance to authoritative or propagandistic discourse. Thus, under the guise of sensory and sound anthropology for …

Hybrid Cnn–Gru-Based Demand–Supply Forecasting To Enhance Sustainability In Renewable-Integrated Smart Grids, Süleyman Emre Eyimaya, Necmi Altin

Faculty Publications

The rapid integration of renewable energy sources in smart grids has introduced significant uncertainty in both power generation and consumption patterns, posing challenges to environmental, economic, and operational sustainability. Accurate short-term forecasting of energy demand and supply is essential for achieving optimal scheduling, grid stability, and resilient operation in renewable-integrated power systems. This study proposes a hybrid deep learning framework combining Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Gated Recurrent Units (GRU) for intelligent joint demand–supply forecasting in smart grids. The model was developed and implemented in MATLAB using real-world datasets comprising electricity consumption, photovoltaic (PV) generation, temperature, and irradiance variables. Comparative …

The U Visa At 25: Legislative Missteps, Bureaucratic Neglect, And Geographic Roulette, Jason A. Cade Mar 2026

The U Visa At 25: Legislative Missteps, Bureaucratic Neglect, And Geographic Roulette, Jason A. Cade

Scholarly Works

A quarter century ago, Congress created the U visa with dual goals: protecting immigrant crime victims and facilitating law enforcement cooperation by removing deportation barriers to crime reporting. Yet the program as implemented has fallen dramatically short of these aims. This Essay provides the first comprehensive analysis of the U visa's structural failures at its twenty-fifth anniversary. Two fundamental design flaws plague the program. First, Congress capped U visas at 10,000 annually-far below actual need-while the immigration agency has consistently failed to implement congressionally-authorized interim protections. The result is that, as of 2025, applicants wait five years for work authorization …

From Behind The Screen: Evaluating Teachers' Perceptions Of Online Professional Learning, Kathryn A. Rutledge

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, online teacher professional learning has become a common format. However, in the large rural school district in central Florida where I work, the rising enrollment in online professional learning contrasted with declining completion rates among participants. My qualitative research study sought to explain why teachers’ perceptions of effective professional learning differ and why some teachers who enroll in asynchronous online professional learning courses fail to complete them. Using narrative inquiry, I collected data through qualitative questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with six teachers representing varied educational backgrounds. Analysis of the six participants’ interviews revealed five central themes: challenges …

Some Things Are Actually Nails: The Value Of Randomized Experiments Across Legal Theories, Hajin Kim, Kevin Tobia, Kristen Underhill

University of Chicago Law Review

Experiments sometimes get a bad rap. Critics allege that they don’t illuminate how the real world works, are subject to p-hacking and manipulation, and often don’t study the most important populations of interest. We examine historical uses of experiments to generate knowledge for legal academia. Recently, experiments have become associated with law and economics as part of a broader coupling of quantitative empirical work with law and economics. But experimentation is a highly adaptable, if imperfect, research method that can support causal claims and test assumptions that are useful across many legal theories, including law and political economy. We discuss …

The 'Golden Hour': A Geospatial Analysis Of Travel Time To Public Emergency Departments In Kenya, Tushara Surapaneni, Nancy Kinyua, Benjamin Wachira

Emergency Medicine, East Africa

Introduction In Kenya and many other low- and middle-income countries, prehospital care systems are underdeveloped or entirely non-existent, leaving emergency departments (EDs) as the primary point of care for medical emergencies. The aim of this cross-sectional observational study was to use a geographic information system (GIS) to comprehensively analyse access to public EDs in Kenya within 1-hour and 2-hour travel times.

Methods Using open-source GIS software, population, land cover, elevation and road network data were analysed to create maps of 1-hour and 2-hour travel time catchment areas around public EDs in Kenya. Travel time analysis was calculated using AccessMod with …

Introducing The Aasspectq Framework: A New Typology For Assessing Quality, Pedagogy, Outcomes, And Learning In Micro-Credentials, Felix Quayson

Journal of Research Initiatives

Micro-credentials have gained increasing attention as a flexible and competency-based approach to bridging the gap between formal education and workforce demands. Unlike traditional qualifications and degrees, micro-credentials focus on discrete, demonstrable skills that can be rapidly developed, assessed, and recognized across industries. I proposed the Auditing, Avoidance, Specificity, Skills, Personalization, Efficiency, Competency, Technology, and Quality Assurance (AASSPECTQ) conceptual framework to examine the current state of micro-credential implementation, highlighting the tools, learning outcomes, and assessment instruments necessary for effective program design. The challenges of quality assurance, portability, and recognition that continue to limit widespread adoption were also explored. By …

Using Ensemble Disagreement To Stabilize Conformal Prediction Under Distribution Shift, Patrick D. Murphy Mar 2026

Using Ensemble Disagreement To Stabilize Conformal Prediction Under Distribution Shift, Patrick D. Murphy

Master's Theses

Semantic segmentation of eelgrass from drone imagery is crucial for coastal habitat monitoring, restoration, and management, as these habitats continue to see rapid changes due to climate change and human influence. However, the reliability of generalizing a deployed classification model relies on both high-accuracy segmentation as well as robust uncertainty quantification that holds up when conditions change over years or locations. Conformal prediction (CP) is a method that converts a classifier's output into prediction sets with a guaranteed average coverage level for in-distribution data. However, the “vanilla” conformal score can often under-cover in hard or out-of-distribution (OOD) regions under drift. …

Mainstreaming Mistrust: The Shift In Us Vaccine Policy Under The Trump Administration, Sanjin Musa, Amy Estlund, Megan A. Berman

Faculty Scholarship

Department of Health and Human Services led by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., represents a significant departure from long-standing public health norms. This commentary explores how historically marginalized anti-vaccine activism has moved into the mainstream of government oversight. Key actions driving this transition include the wholesale replacement of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, the departure of senior CDC officials, and the public questioning of established childhood immunization schedules. Furthermore, the administration has ceased financial support for global health entities like the World Health Organization and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, while canceling funding for innovative mRNA vaccine platforms.

These domestic policy …

The Festival Of “Geristoba” (The Feast Of The Moon) In Shida Kartli, Associated With The Cult Of Saint George, Giorgi Sosiashvili Prof. Dr., Aleksandre Mgebrishvili Prof. Dr. Mar 2026

The Festival Of “Geristoba” (The Feast Of The Moon) In Shida Kartli, Associated With The Cult Of Saint George, Giorgi Sosiashvili Prof. Dr., Aleksandre Mgebrishvili Prof. Dr.

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

This study examines Geristoba, the Saint George feast historically celebrated around the Church of Saint George in Geri (Shida Kartli, Georgia) and its related sanctuary in Arbo. Drawing on the Chronicle of Geri (compiled by Deacon Iakob Lomouri), 19th–20th-century ethnographic accounts (S. Makalatia), historical notes (A. Garsevanishvili, Z. Chichinadze), and period press reports (Tsnobis Purtseli, Mtskemsi), the article reconstructs the site’s foundation traditions—attributed to King Pharsman and later royal patronage under Queen Tamar—alongside the ritual calendar and practices. It argues that Geristoba preserves a layered syncretism: Christian veneration of Saint George overlaid on earlier lunar cult symbolism, visible in the …
