Ghost Dances: A Trans-Movement Manifesto, Susan Stryker Apr 2009

Ghost Dances: A Trans-Movement Manifesto, Susan Stryker

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

Several things coincided to shape the space from which this lecture emerged. The first was an email from a list I'm on, soliciting creative, artistic responses to climate change. The second was a call for proposals for a symposium on "subversive imaginaries." The third, an ongoing conversation with a dancer friend about critical embodiment practices. Fourth, the tangle of thoughts sorting themselves out into various bits of prose and syllabi then being demanded by editors and administrators. Fifth, the backdrop of an historical presidential election soliciting us all to dwell upon "the fierce urgency of now." And finally, the call …

Optical Pulsars And Black Arrows: Discoveries As Occasioned Productions, Timothy Koschmann, Alan Zemel Apr 2009

Optical Pulsars And Black Arrows: Discoveries As Occasioned Productions, Timothy Koschmann, Alan Zemel

Publications

The current paper represents a methodological proposal. It seeks to address the question of how one might recognize a discovery as a discovery without knowing in advance what is available to be discovered. We propose a solution and demonstrate it using data from a study previously reported by Roschelle (1992). Roschelle investigated two students’ discovery of certain abstract features of Newtonian mechanics while working within a computer-based microworld, the Envisioning Machine. We employ an approach we term discovery-as-occasioned-production to re-examine his data. Such an approach proceeds stepwise from the identification of some matter discovered, working backwards to see just where …

Acanthus Ilicifolius Linn. - Lesser Known Medicinal Plants With Significant Pharmacological Activities, Amritpal Singh, Sanjiv Duggal, Ashish Suttee

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Acanthus ilicifolius Linn. (Acanthaceae) is relatively lesser-known, yet important medicinal plant of Herbal Materia Medica. The plant is used in traditional systems of medicine, including Traditional Indian Medicine (TIM) or Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The plant is reported to contain phytochemicals including alkaloid and wide range of glucosides (lignan and phenylethanoid). In traditional medicine, the plant is used in the treatment of diseases ranging from snake bite to skin diseases. Laboratory investigations on extracts of the plant have demonstrated significant pharmacological activities like antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, anti-osteporotic and hepatoprotective. The review analyses traditional medicinal usage, and phyto-pharmacological investigations done …

Tushar Grazing Allotments Collaboration: Final Report, Fishlake National Forest, Michele Straube Apr 2009

Tushar Grazing Allotments Collaboration: Final Report, Fishlake National Forest, Michele Straube

Environmental Dispute Resolution Program

The Tushar Allotments Collaboration grew out of an appeal of a decision made by the Forest Service to reauthorize grazing on eight allotments within the Tushar Mountains. The appeal was withdrawn, so that issues regarding existing conditions, desired future conditions and appropriate grazing management actions to move from existing toward desired conditions could be explored collaboratively between the Forest Service, grazing permittees, the appellants and other interested stakeholders, with a focus on two representative allotments – the Pine Creek/Sulphurbeds and Ten Mile allotments.

Growth Hormone Alters The Proteome Of Differentiated Mac-T Cells, Tasha Lynn Johnson, Daniel G. Peterson Apr 2009

Growth Hormone Alters The Proteome Of Differentiated Mac-T Cells, Tasha Lynn Johnson, Daniel G. Peterson

Animal Science

Growth Hormone (GH) improves growth and lactation in many species. Mammary epithelium is responsive to GH though the mechanism of these effects has not yet been fully characterized. Bovine Mammary Alveolar Cell-T (MAC-T) cells uniformly differentiate and secrete casein proteins in response to dexamethasone, insulin and prolactin (DIP) and are a widely used ruminant mammary cell model. We have found significant changes in triacyglycerol, cholesterol and phospholipid distribution in MAC -T cells stimulated with 10 ng/ml GH. To characterize these direct effects of GH on a proteomic level, total protein was isolated from MAC-T cells after differentiation for seven days …

Rabies In Maine: 1998-2008, Kaggie Orrick ('10) Apr 2009

Rabies In Maine: 1998-2008, Kaggie Orrick ('10)

Atlas of Maine

This map shows the number, location and type of animals found with rabies by county in Maine for the entire decade. It displays the top four species found with rabies: raccoons, skunks, bats and foxes. These four account for 96% of positive cases in Maine. Rabies is a fatal disease of the central nervous system. It is deadly but uncommon in humans in the US. However, animals, especially wildlife, are very susceptible to carrying the disease. Tests are conducted every year by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services to ensure that rabies is not rapidly spreading since it …

Evaluation Of The Conservation Lands Of Maine Based On Presence Of Habitat Suitable For Listed Species, Michael Ambrogi ('09), Kimberly Bittler ('11) Apr 2009

Evaluation Of The Conservation Lands Of Maine Based On Presence Of Habitat Suitable For Listed Species, Michael Ambrogi ('09), Kimberly Bittler ('11)

Atlas of Maine

“Conservation Lands” include both public and private lands that are devoted to the protection of wildlife and natural resources. “Listed Species” include federally and state endangered and threatened animals that are in danger of extermination in the state of Maine. The purpose of this study is to determine how well conservation lands are protecting the habitats of listed species. GAP data was used for 13 terrestrial vertebrate species indicating the presence or absence of suitable habitats. This data was compiled in GIS, generating a layer showing the number of listed species an area is suitable for. The areas that were …

Clock-Cancer Connection In Non-Hodgkin’S Lymphoma: A Genetic Association Study And Pathway Analysis Of The Circadian Gene Cryptochrome 2, Richard G. Stevens

UCHC Articles - Research

Circadian genes have the potential to influence a variety of cancer-related biological pathways, including immune regulation, which may influence susceptibility to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL). However, few studies have examined the role of circadian genes in lymphomagenesis. The current study examined Cryptochrome 2 (CRY2), a core circadian gene and transcriptional repressor, as a potential circadian biomarker for NHL. We first performed genetic association analyses of tagging SNPs in CRY2 and NHL risk using DNA samples from a population-based case-control study (N= 455 cases and 527 controls). Three SNPs were found to be significantly associated with risk of NHL when …

A Common Polymorphism In Serotonin Receptor 1b Mrna Moderates Regulation By Mir-96 And Associates With Aggressive Human Behaviors, Kevin P. Jensen, Jonathan Covault, Tamlin S. Conner, Henry R. Kranzler, Howard A. Tennen, Henry M. Furneaux

UCHC Articles - Research

Non-coding regulatory elements can transduce the human genome's response to environmental stimuli. Thus, there is a possibility that variation in non-coding regulatory elements may underlie some of the diversity in human behavior. However, this idea has remained largely untested due to the difficulty in accurately identifying regulatory elements in the 98% of the human genome that does not encode protein. The recent recognition that small trans-acting RNAs anneal to mRNA and regulate gene expression provides a means to identify and test such variants. Here we show that microRNA-directed silencing of mRNA can be attenuated by a common human polymorphism. We …

Identity: Theory And Clinical Implications, Kolina J. Delgado Apr 2009

Identity: Theory And Clinical Implications, Kolina J. Delgado

Psychology Student Publications

The term identity refers to how one defines the self. As can probably be inferred based on the previous statement, the concept of identity formation is complex. Scholars from several schools of thought have hypothesized about identity for centuries, yet the concept of identity development remains an elusive one to say the least. The lack of consensus regarding what the term 'identity' encompasses has made research endeavors rather difficult. Nevertheless, there is an extensive literature base on identity and selfhood, making it all but impossible to provide an exhaustive review within the confines of one paper. Therefore, the current paper …
