Seasonal Manatee Sightings In Port Everglades, Melissa Paschke Apr 2009

Seasonal Manatee Sightings In Port Everglades, Melissa Paschke

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Due to a decrease in ambient water temperatures during the winter months in Florida, the Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) will seek warm water refuge in power plants and natural springs throughout both north and south Florida. Port Everglades is an important haven for these animals in south Florida, providing warm water as well as a food supply. The goal of this research is to examine the correlation between the number of manatees spotted in Port Everglades versus the year, water temperature, and location in the port. Since 2006, data has been collected on the manatees in Port Everglades and …

Undergraduate Nurses’ And Midwives’ Participation And Satisfaction With Live Interactive Webcasts., Gr Williamson, I Maramba, Rb Jones, J Morris

School of Nursing and Midwifery

INTRODUCTION: E-Learning methods such as webcasting are being used increasingly in healthcare education, including that of nurses and midwives. Webcasting means live synchronous broadcasting over the internet, where students participate simultaneously in text 'chat room' interactive discussions when logged on to a webpage where they can see and hear a presentation such as a PowerPoint lecture, a list of other participants, and access 'chat rooms'. AIMS: This paper reports student participation and satisfaction with the use of webcasting in a third year undergraduate nursing and midwifery research methods module in one higher education institution faculty of health and social work …

Indoor Environmental Quality Within An Elementary School Classroom: Measurements Of Felis Domesticus I, Dermatophagoides Pteronyssinus I, Dermatophagoides Farinae I, And Blatella Germanica In Carpeting, Jennifer Fowler Apr 2009

Indoor Environmental Quality Within An Elementary School Classroom: Measurements Of Felis Domesticus I, Dermatophagoides Pteronyssinus I, Dermatophagoides Farinae I, And Blatella Germanica In Carpeting, Jennifer Fowler

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The United States Environmental Protection Agency acknowledges that indoor environments can impact the health of students and can affect concentration, attendance, and student performance (USEPA 2008). In a school year, children are required by the Florida Department of Education to be in school for a total of 180 days, which is 795 hours spent in a classroom (FLDOE 2008). In the elementary school setting, kindergarten classes typically spend a portion of the school day with floor-based activities. The American Lung Association (ALA) states that over 6.8 million children under the age of 18 are affected by asthma (ALA 2008). Allergic …

Bite Force In Two Top Predators, The Great Barracuda, Sphyraena Barracuda And Bull Shark Carcharhinus Leucas, During Ontogeny, María Laura Habegger

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Functional morphologists have extensively used measurements of performance to investigate the relationship among form, function and ecology through ontogeny. Among different measurements of performance bite force play a crucial role influencing fitness. Although, bite force has been thoroughly investigated among vertebrates, the majority of the studies on fishes have been concentrated only in small species. Consequently, this is the first study that compares the bite force performance in two large marine predators, the great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) and bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas). Values of posterior bite force in S. barracuda varied from 3 - 258 N …

A Localized Morphometric Study Of Panicum Virgatum And Sister Taxa (Poaceae: Panicoideae: Paniceae), Sarah Elizabeth Youngstrom Apr 2009

A Localized Morphometric Study Of Panicum Virgatum And Sister Taxa (Poaceae: Panicoideae: Paniceae), Sarah Elizabeth Youngstrom

Theses

Morphological distinctions were evaluated between taxa of Panicum section Virgata Nees as recognized by Hitchcock and Chase (1951) and Freckmann and Lelong (2002b): P. virgatum var. virgatum, P. virgatum var. cubense, P. amarum subsp. amarum, and P. amarum subsp. amarulum, using morphometrics and greenhouse experiments on material from the southeastern United States, a region with the most extreme overlap in distribution. 31 characters for 104 specimens were subject to univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyses. Spikelet bivariate graphs showed two groups with large (C) and small (A+B) spikelets. When habitat, distribution, and phenology was superposed on these graphs, non-exclusive trends polarized …

Novel Roles For B-Raf In Mitosis And Cancer, Meghan E. K Borysova Apr 2009

Novel Roles For B-Raf In Mitosis And Cancer, Meghan E. K Borysova

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The MAP kinase pathway is well known for its key roles in regulating cell proliferation and cell cycle progression. MAP kinases have also been implicated in mitotic functions, however these functions are less-well understood. Recent studies from our laboratory used Xenopus egg extracts to identify B-Raf as an essential activator of the MAPK cascade during mitosis. Therefore, the first objective of my dissertation research was to determine if B-Raf has functional significance during mitosis in human somatic cells.

Using RNA interference against B-Raf and various immunofluorescence techniques, I show that B-Raf: (1) localizes to and is phosphorylated at a key …

Think Inside The Box: Using Tables To Understand Number Patterns [4th Grade], Kristen Lesher, Carrie Susong Apr 2009

Think Inside The Box: Using Tables To Understand Number Patterns [4th Grade], Kristen Lesher, Carrie Susong

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

This two-week unit introduces students to more sophisticated number patterns and teaches students how to describe the relationship between two sets of data in a table. In the unit, students will identify patterns in everyday situations, record those patterns in the form of a table, and begin to use arithmetic expressions as well as other strategies to describe relationships between sets of data in a table. The performance task will ask students to create tables comparing age relationships. Students will describe the relationship between sets of data in each table using both written and verbal communication.

Africa [9th Grade], Kate Empson Apr 2009

Africa [9th Grade], Kate Empson

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

Students will focus on colonialism in Africa. The focus will be on natural resources and the geographic location of Africa and how these two factors led to European colonization of Africa. The unit will then move on to explain how the colonization and exploitation of Africa led to the cycle of poverty in which Africa is currently embedded. Students will use their knowledge of Africa to participate in a simulation. Students will be assigned a specific country in Africa to research. Students will also research the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and determine how these goals have affected Africa.
