Water For Life: A Journey To Nicaragua Exploring Sustainable Development, Edwin P. Maurer Apr 2009

Water For Life: A Journey To Nicaragua Exploring Sustainable Development, Edwin P. Maurer

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering

When I first arrived in the Peruvian Altiplano as a Maryknoll missioner 15 years ago, I was struck by the presence of a beautifully engineered system of irrigation canals extending through several communities. Engineers love to solve problems, and seeing progress like this in a very poor region of mostly subsistence farming was encouraging…until I learned that it had never delivered a drop of water, and probably never would. The design of the system had been done by outsiders unfamiliar with the intricacies of farming in the harsh, high-elevation climate, completely unaware of the unique form of land ownership. As …

Digital Curation Vignettes: Personal, Academic, And Organizational Digital Information, Joan E. Beaudoin, Maria Esteva, Andrea Japzon Apr 2009

Digital Curation Vignettes: Personal, Academic, And Organizational Digital Information, Joan E. Beaudoin, Maria Esteva, Andrea Japzon

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

This panel presents variations on the theme of digital curation by examining the digital information management and preservation practices of three different populations. Personal digital information management, personal collections transferred to institutional repositories, and a digital archiving case in a private organization, offer a wide view of the types of contexts in which digital material is being produced “in the wild.” Across the cases we found that digital record-keeping and preservation practices are not well understood or established, and that a vast amount of digital content created currently is at risk. Other issues, such as an individual’s perception of digital …

How To Fix The Google Book Search Settlement, James Grimmelmann Apr 2009

How To Fix The Google Book Search Settlement, James Grimmelmann

Faculty Scholarship

The proposed settlement in the Google Book Search case should be approved with strings attached. The project will be immensely good for society, and the proposed deal is a fair one for Google, for authors, and for publishers. The public interest demands, however, that the settlement be modified first. It creates two new entities—the Books Rights Registry Leviathan and the Google Book Search Behemoth—with dangerously concentrated power over the publishing industry. Left unchecked, they could trample on consumers in any number of ways. We the public have a right to demand that those entities be subject to healthy, pro-competitive oversight, …

Lean And Obese Zucker Rats Exhibit Different Patterns Of P70s6 Kinase Regulation In The Tibialis Anterior Muscle In Response To High-Force Muscle Contraction, Anjaiah Katta, Sunil K. Karkala, Miaozong Wu, Sarath Meduru, Devashish H. Desai, Kevin M. Rice, Eric R. Blough Apr 2009

MIIR Faculty Research

Increased phosphorylation of the 70-kDa ribosomal S6 kinase (p70S6k) signaling is strongly correlated with the degree of muscle adaptation following exercise. Herein we compare the phosphorylation of p70S6k, Akt, and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) in the tibialis anterior (TA) muscles of lean and obese Zucker rats following a bout of eccentric exercise. Exercise increased p70S6k (Thr389) phosphorylation immediately after (33.3 ± 7.2%) and during [1 h (24.0 ± 14.9%) and 3 h (24.6 ± 11.3%)] recovery in the lean TA and at 3 h (33.5 ± 8.0%) in the obese TA Zucker rats. mTOR (Ser2448) phosphorylation was elevated in …

Search And Offshoring In The Presence Of 'Animal Spirits', Devashish Mitra, Priya Ranjan Apr 2009

Search And Offshoring In The Presence Of 'Animal Spirits', Devashish Mitra, Priya Ranjan

Economics - All Scholarship

In this paper, we introduce two sources of unemployment in a two-factor general equilibrium model: search frictions and fairness considerations. We find that a binding fair-wage constraint increases the unskilled unemployment rate and can at the same time lead to a higher unemployment rate for skilled workers, as compared to an equilibrium where fairness considerations are absent or non-binding. Starting from a constrained equilibrium, an increase in the fairness parameter leads to increases in both skilled and unskilled unemployment. The wage of unskilled workers increases but the wage of skilled workers decreases. Next we allow for offshoring of unskilled jobs …

Increasing Student Achievement And Motivation In Mathematics Through The Use Of Interactive Whiteboards, Diane Taylor Apr 2009

Increasing Student Achievement And Motivation In Mathematics Through The Use Of Interactive Whiteboards, Diane Taylor

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

The use of interactive whiteboards in the classroom has been hailed as the means in which an increase in student achievement and motivation can be seen. This study aimed to investigate how teachers can effectively incorporate the interactive whiteboard into the mathematics classroom with the purpose of increasing student achievement and motivation. Three third grade classrooms with varying use of interactive whiteboard technology were utilized in this study. Information on multiplication fluency, the ability to demonstrate the mathematical concepts behind multiplication, student views as seen through survey responses, and end of the unit assessment scores were analyzed. Student achievement and …

Animals And The Problem Of Evil In Recent Theodicies, Mark Maller Apr 2009

Animals And The Problem Of Evil In Recent Theodicies, Mark Maller

Philosophy Scholarship

This paper critically evaluates the theodicies of John Hick, Richard Swinburne and process theism regarding animal suffering and evils. The positions of Hick and Swinburne are based on false empirical assumptions, e.g., animals do not suffer. Process theism’s claim that God is not omnipotent is an unsatisfactory answer inconsistent with the traditional concept of God. These positions cannot fully explain the mass suffering and unnecessary deaths of animals throughout time. My positive position is that God’s putative love for all sentient beings does not necessarily entail that he loves every individual human and animal. Humans do not interfere with the …

The Northwest Corner Of Heaven: A History Of Cascade College, Gary L. Tandy Apr 2009

The Northwest Corner Of Heaven: A History Of Cascade College, Gary L. Tandy

Faculty Publications - Department of English

This is not a history that I wanted to write—at least not yet. When I moved my family to Portland in the summer of 1994 to become a charter faculty member of Cascade College, the future looked bright. After the closure of Columbia Christian College in 1993, much excitement had been generated among Northwest supporters of Christian education when Oklahoma Christian University agreed to lend its accreditation to a branch campus to operate on the site of the former college.

As one of the “pioneer” faculty members, I was encouraged by the support expressed for the college by the church …

Bailouts, Buy-Ins, And Ballyhoo, Robert C. Hockett Apr 2009

Bailouts, Buy-Ins, And Ballyhoo, Robert C. Hockett

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

The bailout strategy now being pursued by Treasury under the recently authorized Troubled Asset Relief Plan, if “strategy” it can be called, remains obscure and erratic at best. All the while markets remain jittery and credit remains tight, as the underlying source of our present financial jitters—continued decline in the housing market and still mounting foreclosures—goes unaddressed. This piece proposes an interesting and novel approach to solving the financial problem. If it works out, it would eventually minimize the cost to the government.
