The Conceptualization And Integration Of Conscious Breathing Into Clinical Practice, Mia Rachel Gutfreund Aug 2009

The Conceptualization And Integration Of Conscious Breathing Into Clinical Practice, Mia Rachel Gutfreund

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this study was to explore how clinicians integrate conscious breathing into their practice as psychotherapists. Sixteen therapists practicing in the San Francisco Area were interviewed for this qualitative study. Participants provided rich data in terms of how they conceptualize and utilize conscious breathing techniques, as well as how they think about the place of conscious breathing within traditional "talk" therapy settings. The findings augment existing research on the topic, and provide support for the notion that conscious breathing can be used as a therapeutic technique to advance such goals as mutual regulation, emotional attunement, a sense of …

Quality Control Of Soil Water Data In Applied Climate, Jinshing You, Kenneth Hubbard, Rezaul Mamood, Venkataramana Sridhar, Dennis Todey

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Abstract: Soil moisture is a key state variable from both climate and hydrologic cycle assessment perspectives. Recently, automated measurements of soil moisture with sensors deployed at sites in a real-time monitoring network have provided valuable new data to monitor the soil water resource. However, to assure the quality of the data, quality control QC tools are needed. Earlier studies left little literature on the QC of soil water data as measurements were generally not part of a network that routinely collected measurements. This paper presents a systematic QC analysis and methodology to evaluate the performance of candidate QC techniques using …

Perception And Quality Of Life : Contrasting Personal Faith Based Wellness And The Traditional Medical Models Of Care Used In Alcohol Abuse And Addiction Treatment Programs, Cynthia Gibeau Aug 2009

Perception And Quality Of Life : Contrasting Personal Faith Based Wellness And The Traditional Medical Models Of Care Used In Alcohol Abuse And Addiction Treatment Programs, Cynthia Gibeau

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study explored the quality of care for those who suffer from alcohol and drug abuse. A presentation of the current traditional medical model focused on current research on the brain mechanism involved in alcohol addiction, as well as current treatments that are available. It then presented three models based on personal faith, and supplied research on the efficacy of these models. A valid argument was made that the inclusion of a personal faith model in the treatment of those who suffer from alcohol abuse and addiction would provide a more positive outcome and helps provide more stability when an …

Memristive Model Of Amoeba Learning, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr, Steven La Fontaine, Massimiliano Di Ventra

Faculty Publications

Recently, it was shown that the amoebalike cell Physarum polycephalum when exposed to a pattern of periodic environmental changes learns and adapts its behavior in anticipation of the next stimulus to come. Here we show that such behavior can be mapped into the response of a simple electronic circuit consisting of a LC contour and a memory-resistor (a memristor) to a train of voltage pulses that mimic environment changes. We also identify a possible biological origin of the memristive behavior in the cell. These biological memory features are likely to occur in other unicellular as well as mutlicellular organisms, albeit …

On Immunotherapies And Cancer Vaccination Protocols: A Mathematical Modelling Approach, Badal Joshi, Xueying Wang, Sayanti Banerjee, Haiyan Y. Tian, Anastasios Matzavinos, Mark A.J. Chaplain

Faculty Publications

In this paper we develop a new mathematical model of immunotherapy and cancer vaccination, focusing on the role of antigen presentation and co-stimulatory signaling pathways in cancer immunology. We investigate the effect of different cancer vaccination protocols on the well-documented phenomena of cancer dormancy and recurrence, and we provide a possible explanation of why adoptive (i.e. passive) immunotherapy protocols can sometimes actually promote tumour growth instead of inhibiting it (a phenomenon called immunostimulation), as opposed to active vaccination protocols based on tumour-antigen pulsed dendritic cells. Significantly, the results of our computational simulations suggest that elevated numbers of professional antigen presenting …

Calcium Homeostasis And Cone Signaling Are Regulated By Interactions Between Calcium Stores And Plasma Membrane Ion Channels., Tamas Szikra, Peter Barabas, Theodore M. Bartoletti, Wei Huang, Abram Akopian, Wallace B. Thoreson, David Krizaj Aug 2009

Calcium Homeostasis And Cone Signaling Are Regulated By Interactions Between Calcium Stores And Plasma Membrane Ion Channels., Tamas Szikra, Peter Barabas, Theodore M. Bartoletti, Wei Huang, Abram Akopian, Wallace B. Thoreson, David Krizaj

Journal Articles: Ophthalmology

Calcium is a messenger ion that controls all aspects of cone photoreceptor function, including synaptic release. The dynamic range of the cone output extends beyond the activation threshold for voltage-operated calcium entry, suggesting another calcium influx mechanism operates in cones hyperpolarized by light. We have used optical imaging and whole-cell voltage clamp to measure the contribution of store-operated Ca(2+) entry (SOCE) to Ca(2+) homeostasis and its role in regulation of neurotransmission at cone synapses. Mn(2+) quenching of Fura-2 revealed sustained divalent cation entry in hyperpolarized cones. Ca(2+) influx into cone inner segments was potentiated by hyperpolarization, facilitated by depletion of …

Total Synthesis Of (-)-Acutumine, Fang Li Aug 2009

Total Synthesis Of (-)-Acutumine, Fang Li

Theses and Dissertations

Acutumine is a tetracyclic alkaloid isolated from the Asian vine Menispermum dauricum with selective T-cell cytotoxicity and antiamnestic properties. We have developed a total synthetic route to this congested alkaloid, during which we also found a novel, stereoselective radical-crossover reaction that combines an intramolecular radical conjugate addition with a subsequent enolate hydroxylation. Key features of this synthesis also include a reagent-controlled diastereoselective ketone allylation, an anionic oxy-Cope rearrangement to form a congested quaternary sterocenter, a pyridine-mediated selective ozonolysis, and a Lewis acid promoted Michael-type cyclization.

Relating Visual To Verbal Semantic Knowledge: The Evaluation Of Object Recognition In Prosopagnosia, Jason J. S. Barton, Hashim-M Hanif, Sohi Ashraf Aug 2009

Relating Visual To Verbal Semantic Knowledge: The Evaluation Of Object Recognition In Prosopagnosia, Jason J. S. Barton, Hashim-M Hanif, Sohi Ashraf

Section of Neurology

Assessment of face specificity in prosopagnosia is hampered by difficulty in gauging pre-morbid expertise for non-face object categories, for which humans vary widely in interest and experience. In this study, we examined the correlation between visual and verbal semantic knowledge for cars to determine if visual recognition accuracy could be predicted from verbal semantic scores. We had 33 healthy subjects and six prosopagnosic Patients first rated their own knowledge of cars. They were then given a test of verbal semantic knowledge that presented them with the names of car models, to which they were to match the manufacturer. Lastly, they …

Supporting The Use Of Mbd-1 Knockout Mice As An Animal Model For Autism, Laura Heise, Andrea Allan Aug 2009

Supporting The Use Of Mbd-1 Knockout Mice As An Animal Model For Autism, Laura Heise, Andrea Allan

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of autism in our society has grown over the past few decades while lack of a central pathophysiological cause for the disease has hindered research and design of an animal model with the disease. Methyl CpG Binding Domain-1 knockout mice are a potential model for autism. The mice are owned soley by Dr. Xinyu Zhao of the University of New Mexico. The mice appear normal, both anatomically and developmentally, however, they exhibit behaviors that are often seen in autistic patients. While there are few specific physiological hallmarks of autism among patients, a few studies have noted increased …

Techniques For Addressing Gender Cognitive Differences In The Elementary Classroom, Nichole R. Brooker Aug 2009

Techniques For Addressing Gender Cognitive Differences In The Elementary Classroom, Nichole R. Brooker

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

From conception, the male and female brains develop differently. Due to these differences, current research shows methods of teaching should be examined and modified to accommodate both genders' learning needs. Educating teachers on the brain diversities between the genders is essential for opportunities in establishing a positive classroom atmosphere. In this project, the author has created an interactive workshop for new and experienced teachers to explore the vast differences between the male and female brain, and what those differences mean in the classroom. The interactive workshop will be a full day workshop where the teachers will be presented with facts …

Assessing The Benefits Of Practicing Spirituality Or Religion While Incarcerated : A Study Of Formerly Incarcerated Men In Texas, Jana Lynn Wu

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study explored former prisoners' beliefs regarding the benefits of practicing spirituality or religion during their time of incarceration. The prison population is seldom included in mainstream research studies. Additionally, a personal relationship to religion and spirituality is a difficult phenomenon to quantify in a standardized and formulaic way. This research sought to explore if spirituality or religion can be considered a protective factor during a time of incarceration. This study was conducted with face-to-face interviews, using both demographic and narrative questions. A qualitative, flexible research method design was used to gather and analyze data from 13 former male …
