Validation Of Improved Hardware And Software For Expired Gas Analysis Indirect Calorimetry, Doyeon Kim Aug 2009

Validation Of Improved Hardware And Software For Expired Gas Analysis Indirect Calorimetry, Doyeon Kim

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

The purpose of this investigation was to validate a new system of breath-by-breath expired gas analysis to both an artificial working model of lung ventilation and gas exchange as well as to the Douglas bag technique. In addition, comparisons will be made between expired fractions, ventilation, and computations of VO2, VCO2, and RER between the new system and a commercial mixing chamber system (ParvoMedics) for repeated measurements at rest, steady state and non-steady state cycle ergometry exercise. Post acquisition processing involved custom developed software (LabVIEW), where time to gas equilibration within the mixing bag was determined, as well as differences …

Comparing The Effectiveness Of Hantavirus Outreach In Northwestern New Mexico, Panama, And Chile, Marjorie Mcconnell Aug 2009

Comparing The Effectiveness Of Hantavirus Outreach In Northwestern New Mexico, Panama, And Chile, Marjorie Mcconnell

Sociology ETDs

This research compared the effectiveness of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome prevention outreach in northwestern New Mexico, the Los Santos region of Panama, and Region Araucania IX in Chile. Outreach effectiveness for hantavirus is not well understood, even though outreach in Chile appears to be more extensive than in northwestern New Mexico and Panama. Understanding the role of human demographics, disease ecology, and subsequent human behavior in the disease process is critical to the examination of community responses in terms of behavior changes. Through the implementation of a self administered 28 question survey instrument (n=601), I measured attitudes towards, and across public …

Identification And Manipulation Of Resistance To Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus Derived From Solanum Peruvianum, Luis F. Gordillo Jr. Aug 2009

Identification And Manipulation Of Resistance To Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus Derived From Solanum Peruvianum, Luis F. Gordillo Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The domesticated tomato Solanum lycopersicum (L.), formerly known as Lycopersicon esculentum is a genetically well-studied crop species with high-density linkage and molecular maps based on crosses done between cultivated tomato and its distant related wild species. Wild tomato species harbor a wealth of resistance to many pathogens that have been introgressed into domesticated tomato for genetic control of diseases and pests and for improvement of many agronomic traits. The wild tomato S. peruvianum (L.) is the source of the Sw-5 gene, characterized and mapped to chromosome 9 of the tomato genome and introgressed into elite tomato germplasm, providing resistance to …

Toward A Visual Paideia: Visual Rhetoric In Undergraduate Writing Programs, Candice Welhausen Aug 2009

Toward A Visual Paideia: Visual Rhetoric In Undergraduate Writing Programs, Candice Welhausen

English Language and Literature ETDs

New media and digital texts of the twenty-first century are generally characterized as rich and dynamic combinations of verbal, visual, and aural elements. Instruction in visual rhetoric in the writing classroom, however, has tended to focus on analysis with far less emphasis on teaching students how to produce multimodal texts. Drawing upon classical rhetorical theory, I propose the development of a visual paideia grounded in the educational goals of the Greco-Roman paideia to incorporate richly balanced instruction in both analysis and production of visual-dominant texts. I approach the development of a visual paideia via examining the current state of visual …

Pulsed Em Field Response Of A Thin, High-Contrast, Finely Layered Structure With Dielectric And Conductive Properties, Adrianus T. De Hoop, Lijun Jiang Aug 2009

Pulsed Em Field Response Of A Thin, High-Contrast, Finely Layered Structure With Dielectric And Conductive Properties, Adrianus T. De Hoop, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The response of a thin, high-contrast, finely layered structure with dielectric and conductive properties to an incident, pulsed, electromagnetic field is investigated theoretically. The fine layering causes the standard spatial discretization techniques to solve Maxwell's equations numerically to be practically inapplicable. To overcome this difficulty, an approximate method is proposed that models the interaction of the layer with an incident electromagnetic field via a boundary condition that expresses the in-plane conduction and contrast electric polarization currents in terms of the exciting incident field by relating the jump in the tangential component of the magnetic field strength across the layer in …

A Simple Model Of Cortical Dynamics Explains Variability And State Dependence Of Sensory Responses In Urethane-Anesthetized Auditory Cortex, Carina Curto, Shuzo Sakata, Stephan Marguet, Vladimir Itskov, Kenneth D. Harris Aug 2009

A Simple Model Of Cortical Dynamics Explains Variability And State Dependence Of Sensory Responses In Urethane-Anesthetized Auditory Cortex, Carina Curto, Shuzo Sakata, Stephan Marguet, Vladimir Itskov, Kenneth D. Harris

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The responses of neocortical cells to sensory stimuli are variable and state dependent. It has been hypothesized that intrinsic cortical dynamics play an important role in trial-to-trial variability; the precise nature of this dependence, however, is poorly understood. We show here that in auditory cortex of urethane-anesthetized rats, population responses to click stimuli can be quantitatively predicted on a trial-by-trial basis by a simple dynamical system model estimated from spontaneous activity immediately preceding stimulus presentation. Changes in cortical state correspond consistently to changes in model dynamics, reflecting a nonlinear, self-exciting system in synchronized states and an approximately linear system in …

Genetic Structure Of Amblyomma Cajennense (Acari: Ixodidae) Populations Based On Mitochondrial Gene Sequences, Erica Janelle Burkman Aug 2009

Genetic Structure Of Amblyomma Cajennense (Acari: Ixodidae) Populations Based On Mitochondrial Gene Sequences, Erica Janelle Burkman

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Amblyomma cajennense (Fabricius, 1787) (Acari: Ixodidae) is a common tick species that has a large geographic distribution from the southern regions of the United States (Texas), to the Caribbean Islands, Central, and South America. This tick is a vector of the agent of Brazilian spotted fever, an often fatal disease in South America. Throughout its geographic range, populations of A. cajennense have shown differences in ecological adaptation while feeding on a variety of hosts ranging from livestock, birds, and humans. In order to examine the taxonomic status and phylogeographic evolution of this species, we analyzed mitochondrial 12S rDNA, control region …

Disruption Of Histone Modification And Carm1 Recruitment By Arsenic Represses Transcription At Glucocorticoid Receptor-Regulated Promoters, Fiona D. Barr, Lori J. Krohmer, Joshua W. Hamilton, Lynn A. Sheldon Aug 2009

Disruption Of Histone Modification And Carm1 Recruitment By Arsenic Represses Transcription At Glucocorticoid Receptor-Regulated Promoters, Fiona D. Barr, Lori J. Krohmer, Joshua W. Hamilton, Lynn A. Sheldon

Dartmouth Scholarship

Chronic exposure to inorganic arsenic (iAs) found in the environment is one of the most significant and widespread environmental health risks in the U.S. and throughout the world. It is associated with a broad range of health effects from cancer to diabetes as well as reproductive and developmental anomalies. This diversity of diseases can also result from disruption of metabolic and other cellular processes regulated by steroid hormone receptors via aberrant transcriptional regulation. Significantly, exposure to iAs inhibits steroid hormone-mediated gene activation. iAs exposure is associated with disease, but is also used therapeutically to treat specific cancers complicating an understanding …

The Hebrew Library Of A Renaissance Humanist: The Bibliography To Andreas Masius' Edition Of The Book Of Joshua (Antwerp: Christopher Plantin 1574), Theodor Dunkelgrün Aug 2009

The Hebrew Library Of A Renaissance Humanist: The Bibliography To Andreas Masius' Edition Of The Book Of Joshua (Antwerp: Christopher Plantin 1574), Theodor Dunkelgrün

Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History

Andreas Masius' 1574 polyglot edition of the book of Joshua with copious annotations and commentaries is a monument of Renaissance biblical scholarship. In an appendix - the text presented here - Masius recorded the Hebrew and Aramaic books he consulted in preparing his edition. In spite of the brevity of its descriptions, this bibliography has much to tell us about Christian readership of the Hebrew book in the 16th century. It reveals the depth, breadth, and sophistication of Masius' grasp of Jewish literature. It is a snapshot of his own library, but at the same time also a panorama of …

The Multipurpose 15-Protofilament Microtubules In C. Elegans Have Specific Roles In Mechanosensation, Alexander Bounoutas, Robert O'Hagan, Martin Chalfie Aug 2009

The Multipurpose 15-Protofilament Microtubules In C. Elegans Have Specific Roles In Mechanosensation, Alexander Bounoutas, Robert O'Hagan, Martin Chalfie

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Because microtubules perform many essential functions in neurons, delineating unique roles attributable to these organelles presents a formidable challenge. Microtubules endow neurons with shape and structure and are required for developmental processes including neurite outgrowth [1], intracellular transport [2], and synapse formation and plasticity [3, 4]; microtubules in sensory neurons may be required for the above processes in addition to a specific sensory function. In Caenorhabditis elegans, six touch receptor neurons (TRNs) sense gentle touch [5] and uniquely contain 15-protofilament microtubules [6]. Disruption of these microtubules by loss of either the MEC-7 β-tubulin [7] or MEC-12 α-tubulin [8] or by …

The 1.85 Å Structure Of An 8r-Lipoxygenase Suggests A General Model For Lipoxygenase Product Specificity, David B. Neau, Nathaniel C. Gilbert, Sue G. Bartlett, William Boeglin, Alan R. Brash, Marcia E. Newcomer

Faculty Publications

Lipoxygenases (LOX) play pivotal roles in the biosynthesis of leukotrienes and other biologically active eicosanoids derived from arachidonic acid. A mechanistic understanding of substrate recognition, when lipoxygenases that recognize the same substrate generate different products, can be used to help guide the design of enzyme-specific inhibitors. We report here the 1.85 A ° resolution structure of an 8R-lipoxygenase from Plexaura homomalla, an enzyme with a sequence ∼40% identical to that of human 5-LOX. The structure reveals a U-shaped channel, defined by invariant amino acids, that would allow substrate access to the catalytic iron. We demonstrate that mutations within the channel …

Jews Under Surveillance: Censorship And Reading In Early Modern Italy, Federica Francesconi Aug 2009

Jews Under Surveillance: Censorship And Reading In Early Modern Italy, Federica Francesconi

Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History

This talk explores how Counter-Reformation’s dynamics affected the readings of Italian Jews, after the political changes of the 1550s and the promulgation of the Index by Clement VIII in 1596 (with the ban of the Talmud). Dealing with censorship, expurgation and banning of books, in fact, Italian Jews found themselves caught up between the intricate and often conflicting positions between the Congregation of the Index and the Office of the Inquisition. Based on the analysis of both Inquisitorial sources (proceedings, guidelines and censors’ reports) and biographical accounts, I will explore how rabbis and converts, who worked as appointed censors for …

Leon Modena's Ari Nohem Between Print And Manuscript, Yaacob Dweck Aug 2009

Leon Modena's Ari Nohem Between Print And Manuscript, Yaacob Dweck

Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History

This presentation examines Leon Modena's critique of Kabbalah, a Hebrew treatise composed in Venice in 1639 entitled Ari Nohem (The Roaring Lion). One of the primary causes of Modena's critique was the printing of kabbalistic books such as the Zohar, Ma'arekhet ha-Elohut, and Sefer Yetzirah. In Modena's argument, the printing of kabbalistic books in the sixteenth century had disrupted prior patterns of the transmission of kabbalistic knowledge. In particular, Modena argues that kabbalistic books had begun to be read in new ways by new audiences. Using Modena's analysis as a point of departure this presentation will focus on two questions: …

Cbsm Effects On Sickness Behavior And Pro-Inflammatory Cytokine Mechanisms In Breast Cancer Survivors, Orit Birnbaum-Weitzman Aug 2009

Cbsm Effects On Sickness Behavior And Pro-Inflammatory Cytokine Mechanisms In Breast Cancer Survivors, Orit Birnbaum-Weitzman

Open Access Dissertations

The concept of sickness behavior offers a framework to view both the neurovegetative and psychological symptoms that accompany illness as a common entity that results from increased inflammatory activation. Despite the prevalence of sickness behavior in medical populations, to our knowledge this study provides the first attempt to develop a standardized measure to assess sickness behavior using standard self-report questionnaires commonly used with cancer patients. The set of items included in the measure match theoretical conceptualizations of sickness behavior and target symptoms that comprise anhedonia, depressed mood, cognitive dysfunction, social disinterest, fatigue, low libido, poor appetite, somnolence, sensitivity to pain, …
