Navigating Into The Ring : Some Of The Many Barriers Keeping Equine Assisted Psychotherapy Practitioners From Connecting With Prospective Clients, Shawn W. Young
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study was undertaken to explore some of the barriers that keep EAP(Equine Assisted Psychotherapist) practitioners from connecting with prospective clients and/or allowing them to make EAP a more viable part of their therapy repertoire. Similar to more traditional therapy, EAP can be used for a wide variety of disorders. A qualitative study was conducted by having qualified participants fill out a questionnaire and collecting their ideas and thoughts about what barriers exist and some ideas of how to overcome said barriers. Supporting questions were also asked, such as the efficacy of EAP with certain populations and how EAP can …

Glutamate Excitotoxicity Inflicts Paranodal Myelin Splitting And Retraction., Yan Fu, Wenjing Sun, Yunzhou Shi, Riyi Shi, Ji-Xin Cheng
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Paranodal myelin damage is observed in white matter injury. However the culprit for such damage remains unknown. By coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering imaging of myelin sheath in fresh tissues with sub-micron resolution, we observed significant paranodal myelin splitting and retraction following glutamate application both ex vivo and in vivo. Multimodal multiphoton imaging further showed that glutamate application broke axo-glial junctions and exposed juxtaparanodal K+ channels, resulting in axonal conduction deficit that was demonstrated by compound action potential measurements. The use of 4-aminopyridine, a broad-spectrum K+ channel blocker, effectively recovered both the amplitude and width of compound action potentials. Using …

The Experience Of Early Childhood Educators On Working With Children Who Have Attachment Impairments, Aethena R. Enzer-Mahler
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The following thesis investigates the work done by early childhood educators for attachment-impaired children in the classroom setting. The experiences shared by the educators in this open study may guide and inspire other helping professionals as they develop strategies for working with children for whom it is difficult to build relationships. This study employed open-ended interview questions to gather narrative data from twelve experts who work or have worked in preschool programs. Through direct interviews with the relevant professionals this study examined their efforts to service this challenging population. The overarching request made of participants was to "describe [a] case …
A Discontinuous Space : Postmodern Perspectives On Mental Health Discourse, Jennifer Leigh Harrison
A Discontinuous Space : Postmodern Perspectives On Mental Health Discourse, Jennifer Leigh Harrison
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Language in the mental health field is rich with powerful metaphors, hyperbolic phrases, and linguistic symbols of historical, political and social meaning. At a closer look, a dominant discourse rooted deep in the grounds of empirical science is revealed. In this theoretical study, mental health language is deconstructed using Critical Discourse Analysis and other related theories to locate and analyze a dominant discourse, which opens space for a non-dominant discourse. Postmodern theory assumes that power, entangled with and interdependent on powerlessness, is an absolute phenomenon, and that power abuse can be revealed through the study of a discourse itself. The …

The Development And Evaluation Of Low-Load Resistance Exercise With Blood Flow Restriction As A Countermeasure To Muscular Unloading, Summer B. Cook
Dissertations - ALL
Future space exploration must overcome both scientific and non-scientific obstacles. In accordance with the mission statement of the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) (described in Chapter I), there were four major aims of these experiments. The first was to develop an exercise countermeasure to prevent muscle atrophy and weakness during simulated microgravity. The second and third aims were to determine the physiological adaptations in the knee extensor muscles and plantar flexor muscles following prolonged unloading in human subjects and to assess the effectiveness of the exercise countermeasure at preventing disuse atrophy. The final aim was to assess the relationship between …
Postmortem Analysis Of Synovial Fluid: An Alternative Method For Determining The Presence Of Ethanol, Katie Forman, David Meredith
Postmortem Analysis Of Synovial Fluid: An Alternative Method For Determining The Presence Of Ethanol, Katie Forman, David Meredith
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Postmortem toxicological analysis is often an important tool in autopsy in determining the cause of death. There are circumstances however when traditional samples such as blood and vitreous fluid are unobtainable. In such instances, alternative body fluids such as synovial fluid may be useful adjuncts. However, synovial fluid has not been accepted as a widely used alternative. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between blood ethanol content and synovial fluid ethanol content. To this end, synovial fluid was obtained from 98 cases presenting to the Office of the Medical Investigator in Albuquerque, New Mexico over a …

Eighty-eight rice (Oryza sativa) cDNAs encoding rice leaf expressed protein kinases (PKs) were fused to a Tandem Affinity Purification tag (TAP-tag) and expressed in transgenic rice plants. The TAP-tagged PKs and interacting proteins were purified from the T1 progeny of the transgenic rice plants and identified by tandem mass spectrometry. Forty-five TAP-tagged PKs were recovered in this study and thirteen of these were found to interact with other rice proteins with a high probability score. In vivo phosphorylated sites were found for three of the PKs. A comparison of the TAP-tagged data from a combined analysis of 129 …
Mapping The Dorsal Skin Pigmentation Patterns Of Two Sympatric Populations Of Ambystomatid Salamanders, Ambystoma Opacum And A. Maculatum From Northeast Tennessee., Lok Raj Pokhrel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Because of growing concern of habitat fragmentation and its adverse effects on salamander communities in Appalachian region, sympatric populations of ambystomatid salamanders A. opacum and A. maculatum were studied in Northeast Tennessee to address a number of questions: i) the extent of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) in both species, ii) what traits influence the dorsal skin pigmentation and how, iii) whether gender differences in developmental stability occur, and iv) the extent of phenotypic variation within each species. The findings of this study revealed SSD in both species of salamanders. The most parsimonious statistical model was developed that explained the influence …
Comparison Of Artificial Flavors In Commercial Products And Actual Natural Flavor Via Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy Data., Randi Jasmine Sluss
Comparison Of Artificial Flavors In Commercial Products And Actual Natural Flavor Via Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy Data., Randi Jasmine Sluss
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this research project, real natural strawberries bought from different local sources were profiled by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GCMS). These profiles were then used as a reference to compare GCMS profiles of commercial artificial strawberry flavor products such as strawberry flavored Cool Splashers™, Gatorade®, and Aquacal® flavored water. The chromatograms obtained were patterned using simple visual observations, scatter plot designs, Mann-Whitney U Test, and correlation coefficients. The artificially flavored commercial products tend to have simpler chromatograms. The Burger King® milkshake, Gatorade®, and Hi-C® are the most similar to that of the natural strawberry flavor. Their correlation coefficients are 0.972, 0.870, …
Environmental Determinism: Broken Paradigm Or Viable Perspective?., Gerald L. Hardin
Environmental Determinism: Broken Paradigm Or Viable Perspective?., Gerald L. Hardin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The research was to examine the issue of environmental determinism. It was an ideology that was prevalent throughout the early decades of the 20th century that held that the natural environment was responsible for virtually all human development. It helped bring the study of geography into the venue of postsecondary education, where it was viewed as a tool for study of human activities. It was a new science inspired by Darwinism that viewed human adaptation to the natural environment as critical to socialization.
Relying on historical sources, the purpose of the study was to reveal how environmental determinism became …
Replacing The Priest: Tradition, Politics, And Religion In Early Modern Irish Drama., Leslie Ann Valley
Replacing The Priest: Tradition, Politics, And Religion In Early Modern Irish Drama., Leslie Ann Valley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
By the beginning of the twentieth century, Ireland's identity was continually pulled between its loyalties to Catholicism and British imperialism. In response to this conflict of identity, W. B. Yeats and Lady Augusta Gregory argued the need for an Irish theatre that was demonstrative of the Irish people, returning to the literary traditions to the Celtic heritage. What resulted was a questioning of religion and politics in Ireland, specifically the Catholic Church and its priests. Yeat's own drama removed the priests from the stage and replaced them with characters demonstrative of those literary traditions, establishing what he called a "new …

Why Was I Rejected? How The Attributed Reason For Social Rejection Impacts Subsequent Behavior., Brian Curtis Nelson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It is proposed that differences in rejection attribution could yield variations in subsequent prosocial behavior. To test the attribution hypothesis, 109 participants were randomly assigned to a performance based rejection, a personally based rejection, or a control condition and then worked with an ostensible partner via the Internet to develop uses for a common household item. Prosocial behavior was measured by the number of uses a participant generated (working harder for the team). When generating creative uses, participants in the rejection conditions performed significantly worse than nonrejected participants (F(2,74) = 4.576, p<.05, r2=.11). However, in contradiction …

Reversed-Phase Hplc Determination Of Alliin In Diverse Varieties Of Fresh Garlic And Commercial Garlic Products., Aaron Kwaku Apawu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Alliin is a predominant flavor precursor in garlic cloves. It interacts with the enzyme alliinase when garlic cloves are crushed, cut, or chewed to produce allicin, an unstable thiosulfinate that is the main biologically active component of fresh crushed garlic. Biological functions and health benefits of garlic include reduction of cancer risk in humans, improving immune system, and anti-microbial, anti-oxidant, and anti-hypertensive activities. The quality of fresh garlic and garlic products is usually related to its alliin content and allicin release potential. This research presents a simple, rapid, and precise HPLC method for alliin determination. It involves the use of …

Mechanisms Of Primary Axonal Damage In A Viral Model Of Multiple Sclerosis., Jayasri Das Sarma, Lawrence C. Kenyon, Susan T. Hingley, Kenneth S. Shindler
Department of Neurology Faculty Papers
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the CNS. Recent studies have demonstrated that significant axonal injury also occurs in MS patients and correlates with neurological dysfunction, but it is not known whether this neuronal damage is a primary disease process, or occurs only secondary to demyelination. In the current studies, neurotropic strains of mouse hepatitis virus (MHV) that induce meningitis, encephalitis, and demyelination in the CNS, an animal model of MS, were used to evaluate mechanisms of axonal injury. The pathogenic properties of genetically engineered isogenic spike protein recombinant demyelinating and nondemyelinating strains of MHV were compared. …

Hunger Of The Body, Hunger Of The Mind: The Experience Of Food Insecurity In Rural, Non-Peninsular Malaysia, Elizabeth Elliott Cooper
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Supplementary feeding continues to be a widespread strategy for child health promotion though its efficacy remains contested. The long-standing, Malaysian national food assistance program for children - Program Pemulihan Kanak-Kanak Kekurangan Zat Makanan (PPKZM) - fits this pattern, receiving severe criticism for its limited impact on child nutritional status. Still, the program remains, producing a seeming paradox and prompting questions of how it fits into (1) the larger political context of national health policy and (2) more localized village and clinic environments. This research combines historical inquiry with the in-depth, ethnographic study of two predominantly Malay coastal villages in Malaysian …

Long Lasting Recruitment Of Immune Cells And Altered Epiperineurial Thickness In Focal Nerve Inflammation Induced By Complete Freund's Adjuvant, Geoffrey M. Bove
Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications
Immune-mediated nerve inflammation is involved in many painful states in humans, and causes axonal and behavioral changes in rats. While models of nerve inflammation have been characterized using electrophysiological and behavioral methods, the presence of immune cells has not been fully assessed. We inflamed rat sciatic nerves using complete Freund's adjuvant and quantified the presence of ED-1 macrophages and TCR-αβ T-cells for up to 12 weeks. We report that these immune cells are prominent extraneurally up to 12 weeks following the induction of inflammation. This observation does not easily correlate with inflammation-induced axonal mechanical sensitivity, which peaks within 1 week …

Department of Medical Genetics Faculty Papers
Amiodarone is the most effective antiarrhythmic drug for maintaining sinus rhythm for patients with atrial fibrillation. Extra-cardiac side effects have been a limiting factor, especially during chronic use, and may offset its benefits. Dronedarone is a noniodinated benzofuran derivative of amiodarone that has been developed for the treatment of atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. Similar to amiodarone, dronedarone is a potent blocker of multiple ion currents, including the rapidly activating delayed-rectifier potassium current, the slowly activating delayed-rectifier potassium current, the inward rectifier potassium current, the acetylcholine activated potassium current, peak sodium current, and L-type calcium current, and exhibits antiadrenergic effects. …

The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status On The Neural Substrates Associated With Pleasure, Michael E. Silverman, Peter Muennig, Xun Liu, Zohn Rosen, Martin A. Goldstein
Publications and Research
Low socio-economic status (SES) is associated with increased morbidity and premature mortality. Because tonic adversity relates to a diminished ability to experience pleasure, we hypothesized that subjects living in poverty would show diminished neural responsivity to positive stimuli in regions associated with positive experience and reward. Visual images were presented to twenty-two subjects in the context of a EPI-BOLD fMRI paradigm. Significant differences in neural responses between SES groups to poverty vs. neutral images were assessed, examining group, condition, and interaction effects. The data suggest that persons living in low-SES have neural experiences consistent with diminished interest in things generally …
Attempt, Conspiracy, And Incitement To Commit Genocide, Jens David Ohlin
Attempt, Conspiracy, And Incitement To Commit Genocide, Jens David Ohlin
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
In these brief commentaries to the U.N. Genocide Convention, I explore three criminal law modes of liability as they apply to the international crime of genocide. Part I analyzes attempt to commit genocide and uncovers a basic tension over whether attempt refers to the genocide itself (the chapeau) or the underlying offense (such as killing). Part I concludes that the tension stems from the fact that the crime of genocide itself is already inchoate in nature, since the legal requirements for the crime do not require an actual, completed genocide, in the common-sense understanding of the term, but only a …
