Development Of Blue And Near-Uv Iii-Nitride Laser Diodes, Matthew Seitz Jun 2026

Development Of Blue And Near-Uv Iii-Nitride Laser Diodes, Matthew Seitz

Theses

III-Nitrides show tremendous promise for a wide range of laser diodes and other optoelectronics devices. The wide range of emission wavelengths possible makes these devices ideal candidates for a wide range of applications. Despite this, several challenges remain unsolved, limiting the efficiency and output power from III-Nitride optoelectronics. Three of the most significant remaining challenges surround the formation of low resistance ohmic electrical contacts, poor p-type doping of III-Nitride crystals as well, and the fabrication of the smooth, mirror facets needed for optical feedback and laser operation. Inefficient dopant activation leads to poor conductivity and increased electrical resistance due to …

If Pets Are Family: Pet Loss And The Need For Grief Equity In One Health, Michele L. Whitney Jun 2026

If Pets Are Family: Pet Loss And The Need For Grief Equity In One Health, Michele L. Whitney

Journal of One Health Systems

One Health frameworks increasingly recognize pets as integral to human health and well-being. However, these models often overlook the health and equity implications of pet loss. Culturally mediated grief experiences following pet bereavement represent a critical grief equity gap in One Health systems. Drawing on findings from a qualitative study of African American adults who experienced pet loss, along with existing literature, this Viewpoint highlights how pet loss is not only an emotional experience but also a socially structured one shaped by cultural norms, social recognition, and access to support. These dynamics contribute to inequities in how grief is experienced …

Trophic Transfer Of Fluorescent Polyethylene Microplastics In A Simplified Artemia–Oreochromis Aquatic Food Chain, Dativa J. Shilla

Tanzania Journal of Science

Microplastics (MPs) are pervasive contaminants in aquatic ecosystems, yet experimental evidence of their trophic transfer within tropical African food webs remains scarce. This study provides experimental evidence of indirect trophic transfer of microplastics from Artemia salina to Oreochromis urolepis, a cichlid species of ecological and economic importance in African inland and coastal waters. A simplified two-level food chain was established by exposing A. salina nauplii to fluorescent polyethylene microplastics (10–20 µm; 1, 10, and 100 mg L⁻¹) and subsequently feeding them to juvenile O. urolepis under controlled laboratory conditions. These concentrations were selected to represent a range of exposure levels …

The Helminthic Status Of Selected Tanzanian Subterranean Rodents, The Root-Rats (Spalacidae: Tachyoryctes Splendens) And Emini Silvery Mole-Rats (Bathyergidae: Heliophobius Argenteocinereus Emini), Jestina V. Katandukila

Tanzania Journal of Science

Root-rats (Tachyoryctes splendens) and emini silvery mole-rats (Heliophobius argenteocinereus emini) are common subterranean rodents that are essential component of the ecosystem. They serve as prey for small to medium-sized carnivores and birds of prey but their role as hosts to parasites is limited. The present study, explored the Gastrointestinal Tract (GIT) contents of 40 rodents (20 T. splendens and 20 H. a. emini, respectively) to acquire information on parasites diversity of these mammals. The GIT contents from subterranean rodents in a sex ratio of 1:1 were examined under a compound microscope to isolate helminths. The isolated helminths belonged to the …

High-grade gliomas (HGGs) are aggressive brain tumors with poor prognosis, driven in part by metabolic and epigenetic adaptations. Methionine metabolism supports HGG growth by supplying S-adenosylmethionine for methylation reactions, yet how nutrient availability influences chromatin organization in HGG remains incompletely understood. Using an immunocompetent mouse model of HGG, we found that dietary methionine restriction reduced tumor proliferation, extended survival, and induced partial nuclear inversion. We identified Hp1bp3 as a key regulator of tumor growth that functions by interacting with nuclear tethering proteins to mediate chromatin reorganization. Loss of Hp1bp3 results in the upregulation of histone demethylases leading to selective depletion …

Broadly Reactive Human Monoclonal Antibodies Targeting Influenza A Nucleoprotein Lack Protective Activity In Vivo, Walter N Harrington, David C Brice, Aaron J Schmitz, Jackson S Turner, Rafael Brent, Philip A Mudd, Ali H Ellebedy, Richard J Webby

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The antibody response to influenza virus infection targets numerous viral proteins, with those specific for the hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) surface glycoproteins being the most extensively studied. Antibodies to HA and NA function as independent immune correlates of protection and form the basis of most vaccine approaches. In contrast, the contribution of antibodies to other viral proteins such as the nucleoprotein (NP) remains unclear, and existing studies have reached conflicting conclusions. In this work, we examined three human monoclonal NP antibodies isolated from plasmablasts of two individuals naturally infected with influenza A virus (IAV) during the 2018-2019 influenza season. …

Beyond The Prompt: Coding The Magis In The Age Of Ai, Vanessa Rotondo Jun 2026

Beyond The Prompt: Coding The Magis In The Age Of Ai, Vanessa Rotondo

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

As a scholar-practitioner in Jesuit higher education, I’ve witnessed how generative AI is not merely a tool students use—it’s a formative force that shapes how they reflect, imagine, and even pray. Drawing on the Catholic imagination, Ignatian pedagogy, and sociological frameworks like liquid modernity, I argue that Jesuit institutions must respond not just technologically and reactively, but actively anticipate methods of integrating AI both theologically and pedagogically. I introduce the concept of Imaginative Intelligence as a formative goal—an embodied, sacramental way of knowing that invites depth, wonder, and resistance to automation. This is not a call to reject AI, but …

Faculty And Staff Formation In Jesuit Higher Education: The Scholarship And Art Of Accompaniment, Belle Liang, Maria Gregoire, Elisa Liang

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

This study examines the formative impact of selected faculty and staff formation initiatives offered at Boston College, with particular attention to those shaped by Ignatian spirituality. Drawing on qualitative survey data from 134 participants, the analysis identifies interrelated conditions through which formation is experienced as a coherent process rather than a set of discrete programs. Across initiatives, renewal and vocational clarity were most often described through four conditions: People, Pause, Place, and Purpose, understood here as the alignment of values, commitments, and lived practice. Presence emerged as the relational medium through which People, Pause, Place, and Purpose became formative. Presence …

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Forming Physicians for Others: The Identity of the Jesuit Catholic Medical School

The Jesuit medical school accepts a widely-acknowledged telos: the preparation of the medical student to offer excellent patient care. It pursues this telos, however, through the distinctiveness of Ignatian formation, which finds expression in each domain of undergraduate medical education. This formative commitment, oriented toward and witnessing to an appreciation of the unconditional worth of the human being, may empower a subset of medical students—who are engaged by a life of faith and open to the transcendent invitation of their lives—to experience an even more fundamental transformation—one that …

Documenting Patterns Of Spring And Autumn Bird Bigration At Phillips Tract Research Area, A Stopover Site In The American Midwest, Janice K. Enos, Michael R. Avara, Tara A. Beveroth

North American Bird Bander

Stopover habitat, which is used by birds during migration to rest and refuel, is scarce in the American Midwest due to intensive agriculture. Protected woodlots and other small parcels of habitat do exist in the landscape, and may be important for migratory birds to utilize as stopover sites. Here, using mist netting techniques, we documented abundance and age specific patterns of spring and autumn migration at Phillips Tract Research Area, a protected parcel of land comprised of woodlots and mixed grassland plots. We found that 69 migratory species use this site as stopover habitat, and the most common (n ≥ …

Designing First-Person 3d Simulation Training For Construction Occupational Health Hazards, Kenneth Lawani, Billy Hare, Alan Jack, Rowland Walker, Farhad Sadeghineko, Michael Tong Jun 2026

Designing First-Person 3d Simulation Training For Construction Occupational Health Hazards, Kenneth Lawani, Billy Hare, Alan Jack, Rowland Walker, Farhad Sadeghineko, Michael Tong

CIB Conferences

The level of awareness of occupational health hazards (OHH) in construction falls below that of occupational safety. This raises concern over the effectiveness of OHH interventions, specifically the quality of training provided to construction workers. Continuous exposure of workers to OHH has long-term implications on construction workers’ wellbeing as these are not easily detected. The aim of this paper is to explore the development of OHH training interventions. This study develops a prototype 3D simulation training to accentuate the consequences of workers’ exposure to construction OHH and how to mitigate such OHH with the right training. The core gameplay adopts …

From Compliance To Context - Integrating Cognitive Determinants To Inform Technology Driven Safety Communication In Construction, Amit Ajit Bhalerao, Nikhil Bugalia, Farnad Nasirzadeh Jun 2026

From Compliance To Context - Integrating Cognitive Determinants To Inform Technology Driven Safety Communication In Construction, Amit Ajit Bhalerao, Nikhil Bugalia, Farnad Nasirzadeh

CIB Conferences

Construction safety communication, a central mechanism for hazard mitigation, has advanced along three global trajectories, namely symbolic standardization, cognitive diagnostics, and intelligent digital interventions. However, their combined insights have been minimally applied to the Indian construction context, where high fatality rates persist, disproportionate to the country’s share of the global workforce. By interviewing nine safety experts from various hierarchical levels in public, private, institutional sectors, and a professional body, this study explores how these trajectories are reflected in the Indian construction industry. Four thematic findings emerge: (1) attentional limitations responsible for failure of static safety communication channels; (2) organisational structures …

Assessing Toolbox Talk Efficiency: A Comparative Analysis Of International Best Practices And Indian Construction Realities, Shrinidhi Shankar, Nikhil Bugalia Jun 2026

Assessing Toolbox Talk Efficiency: A Comparative Analysis Of International Best Practices And Indian Construction Realities, Shrinidhi Shankar, Nikhil Bugalia

CIB Conferences

Toolbox Talks (TBTs) serve as the primary mechanism for task-level hazard communication on construction sites worldwide; however, their effectiveness in contexts outside North America and Europe remains poorly understood. This paper presents one of the first systematic examinations of TBT practice on Indian construction sites, combining semi-structured interviews with 14 safety professionals and a PRISMA-guided systematic review of 30 international studies spanning more than 10 national contexts. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study identifies structural constraints unique to Indian construction, including multilingual workforces, daily wage employment systems, multi-tier subcontracting, and the legal exposure of site engineers, all of which fundamentally …

“Not Just Boring Adult Stuff”: Issue-Based And Critical Pedagogies For Civic And Political Learning In Welsh Primary Classrooms, Sioned V. Hughes Jun 2026

“Not Just Boring Adult Stuff”: Issue-Based And Critical Pedagogies For Civic And Political Learning In Welsh Primary Classrooms, Sioned V. Hughes

Democracy & Education

This article explores how issue-based and critically orientated approaches to civic education support the development of political understanding, agency, and voice among primary school children in Wales. Drawing on the principles of critical pedagogy and transformative learning, the study investigates how teachers and pupils engage with political ideas through issue-based inquiry within the framework of the Curriculum for Wales (2022). Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and student focus groups across four diverse Welsh primary schools. Using constructivist grounded theory approach, the analysis identified four interrelated themes: making politics accessible, negotiating discomfort, developing voice and agency, and navigating …

Tilly Norwood And The Promise Of Frictionless Creation: Feminist Pedagogy In Ai-Saturated Classrooms, Jill N. Fredenburg

Feminist Pedagogy

This article examines how feminist pedagogy can intervene in AI-saturated classrooms by foregrounding refusal, embodiment, and critical engagement with what I term the muddy algorithms of generative systems. As institutions increasingly normalize AI as an inevitable educational tool, this work challenges that assumption by situating AI within broader structures of power, labor, and extraction. Drawing on classroom experiences in media and communication courses, I use the case of Tilly Norwood, an AI-generated “actress,” to explore how automation reproduces gendered expectations of availability, consent, and creative labor. The concept of muddy algorithms names the opaque, uneven, and value-laden processes through which …
