Ethical Challenges And Opportunities At The Edge: Incorporating Spirituality And Religion Into Psychotherapy, John C. Gonsiorek, P. Scott Richards, Kenneth I. Pargament, Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications

Incorporating spirituality and religion into psychotherapy has been controversial, but recent contri- butions have argued the importance and provided foundations for doing so. Discussions of ethical challenges in this process are emerging, and this contribution discusses several preliminary issues, relying on the Resolution on Religious, Religion-Based and/or Religion-Derived Prejudice adopted by the American Psychological Association in 2007, as guidance when used with the American Psychological Association’s (2002) Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct. Specifically, this discussion of preliminary challenges addresses competence, bias, maintaining traditions and standards of psychology, and integrity in labeling services for reimbursement. Commentators deepen the …

Background: Microarray analysis and 454 cDNA sequencing were used to investigate a centuries-old problem in regenerative biology: The basis of nerve-dependent limb regeneration in salamanders. Innervated (NR) and denervated (DL) forelimbs of Mexican axolotls were amputated and transcripts were sampled after 0, 5, and 14 days of regeneration. Results: Considerable similarity was observed between NR and DL transcriptional programs at 5 and 14 days post amputation (dpa). Genes with extracellular functions that are critical to wound healing were upregulated while muscle-specific genes were downregulated. Thus, many processes that are regulated during early limb regeneration do not depend upon nerve-derived factors. …

A Critical Evaluation Of John Hick's Religious Pluralism In Light Of His Eschatological Model, Haejong Je Jan 2009

A Critical Evaluation Of John Hick's Religious Pluralism In Light Of His Eschatological Model, Haejong Je

Dissertations

Introduction to the Problem

The philosophy of John Hick, who is famous for his religious pluralism, has received vigorous study in terms of its epistemology, authority, the concept of God, and Christology. However, less attention has been given to his pareschatology. As explained below, initial investigation shows that there is a need for in-depth study of Hick’s religious philosophy in this area.

The Problem

Based upon preliminary research, Hick’s religious pluralism seems to reveal a critical problem with external correspondency, as follows. His pareschatology, which is an attempt to accept all eschatologies of major world religions as valid, may as …

An Investigation Of The Perceptions Of Clergy And Laity On Race-Based Organizational Segregation In The Southern Union Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, David K. Penno Jan 2009

An Investigation Of The Perceptions Of Clergy And Laity On Race-Based Organizational Segregation In The Southern Union Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, David K. Penno

Dissertations

Problem

The Seventh-day Adventist Church in the United States maintains a racially segregated organization in a society that has intentionally dismantled segregation in most of its organizations. The church needs to evaluate its current conference organization in light of this reality. The purpose of this study was to describe the perceptions of Seventh-day Adventist clergy and members in two conferences in the Southern Union concerning race-based organizational segregation in the church.

Method

This study used a mixed method and was descriptive in design. Four focus groups were conducted to explore the dimensions of the research problem. This step was followed …

Identification And Characterization Of Novel Astroviruses, Stacy Finkbeiner Jan 2009

Identification And Characterization Of Novel Astroviruses, Stacy Finkbeiner

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Approximately 1.8 million children die from diarrhea annually, and millions more suffer multiple episodes of nonfatal diarrhea. Despite the availability of improved molecular diagnostics to detect the known viral agents, the etiology of a large proportion of diarrheal cases is unknown. In fact, it is estimated that no causative agent can be identified in up to 40% of sporadic cases or in gastroenteritis outbreaks. Detection of novel or unexpected viruses is the first step in identifying agents that could potentially close the diagnostic gap and pave the way for the development of more comprehensive preventative measures and better treatments. This …

Temporal Discounting: A Comparison Of Adjusting-Amount And Adjusting-Delay Procedures, Daniel Holt Jan 2009

Temporal Discounting: A Comparison Of Adjusting-Amount And Adjusting-Delay Procedures, Daniel Holt

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Several experimental procedures: e.g., adjusting amount, adjusting delay) have been used to study the effect that changes in amount of and delay to a reward have on the reward's subjective value. The present series of three experiments sought to test the implicit assumption that the underlying decision-making process: discounting) is identical regardless of the procedure used, and that all would converge on similar indifference points. For each of the experiments, participants were initially tested on one of the adjusting tasks: Adjusting Immediate Amount, Adjusting Delayed Amount, or Adjusting Delay) and returned a week later to complete each of the remaining …

Systemic Levels Of G-Csf And Il-6 Determine The Angiogenic Potential Of Bone Marrow Resident Monocytes, Alyssa Gregory Jan 2009

Systemic Levels Of G-Csf And Il-6 Determine The Angiogenic Potential Of Bone Marrow Resident Monocytes, Alyssa Gregory

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Recent studies have demonstrated the efficacy of hematopoietic cell-based therapies in promoting therapeutic angiogenesis for a wide variety of vascular syndromes, however the cell populations responsible and the mechanisms involved are poorly understood. Using a mouse model of hindlimb ischemia, we previously showed that an adoptive transfer of donor monocytes significantly enhanced revascularization. Monocytes are a widely heterogeneous cell population and differences in the ability of various monocyte subsets to mediate revascularization have not been previously investigated. Using the hindlimb ischemia model we demonstrate that an adoptive transfer of inflammatory: CX3CR loGr-1+), but not resident: CX3CR1hiGr-1-) monocytes, significantly enhances revascularization …

A Role For The Ecdysone Response Gene E93 In Imaginaling Patterning During Metamorphosis, Xiaochun Mou Jan 2009

A Role For The Ecdysone Response Gene E93 In Imaginaling Patterning During Metamorphosis, Xiaochun Mou

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Drosophila melanogaster E93 is an early ecdysone response gene that encodes a pipsqueak domain transcription factor. E93 is induced by ecdysone at the end of larval development, and directs the death and elimination of several larval tissues during metamorphosis. Although E93 has been considered a dedicated regulator of larval cell death, I have found that E93 is also widely expressed in imaginal tissues during metamorphosis, where it is required for the proper patterning of many adult structures. Our working hypothesis is that E93 functions in imaginal tissues as a metamorphosis-specific cofactor that determines the pupa-specific action of numerous other transcription …

Mandeville's Intolerance: The Contest For Souls And Sacred Sites In The Travels Of Sir John Mandeville, Robert Patterson Jan 2009

Mandeville's Intolerance: The Contest For Souls And Sacred Sites In The Travels Of Sir John Mandeville, Robert Patterson

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

As the first medieval text to combine the matter of the East with the matter of the Holy Land, The Travels circulated widely in over 300 manuscripts, making it an important text when studying medieval Christian attitudes toward non-Christians. Although many scholars point to The Travels as a tolerant text ahead of its time, a historicized approach reveals that Mandeville's project is better understood in terms of his intolerant universalism. I argue that in casting non-Christians as proto-Christians who stand as evidence of Christianity's global spiritual hegemony, the author appropriates and consumes them in service of his universalist agenda. I …

Evolution Of Endosperm Starch Synthesis Pathway Genes In The Context Of Rice: Oryza Sativa) Domestication, Guoqin Yu Jan 2009

Evolution Of Endosperm Starch Synthesis Pathway Genes In The Context Of Rice: Oryza Sativa) Domestication, Guoqin Yu

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The evolution of metabolic pathways is a fundamental but poorly understood aspect of evolutionary change. The rice endosperm starch biosynthetic pathway is one of the most thoroughly characterized biosynthesis pathways in plants, and starch is a trait that has evolved in response to strong selection during rice domestication and subsequent crop improvement. In this study, I have examined six key genes in the rice endosperm starch biosynthesis pathway to investigate the evolution of this pathway before rice domestication and during rice domestication. Oryza rufipogon is the wild ancestor of cultivated rice: Oryza sativa). Oryza sativa has five variety groups: aus, …

Identification And Characterization Of A Xylosylphosphotransferase Of Cryptococcus Neoformans, Morgann Reilly Jan 2009

Identification And Characterization Of A Xylosylphosphotransferase Of Cryptococcus Neoformans, Morgann Reilly

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Cryptococcus neoformans is an environmental yeast and an opportunistic pathogen capable of causing a meningoencephalitis in human hosts. The organism produces an extensive polysaccharide capsule that is unique among pathogenic fungi and absolutely required for its virulence. Work in the Doering laboratory on the capsule and other glycoconjugates of C. neoformans has focused on the identification of glycosyltransferases, enzymes that catalyze the transfer of a sugar moiety from an active donor to a specific acceptor, creating a particular linkage. Previous work demonstrated that xylose residues, derived from the nucleotide sugar UDP-xylose, are necessary for cryptococcal virulence. An assay to detect …

Nature And Environment In Nineteenth-Century Austrian Literature, Bartell Berg Jan 2009

Nature And Environment In Nineteenth-Century Austrian Literature, Bartell Berg

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation illuminates the void of what Christopher Manes refers to in "Nature and Silence" as the "realm of silences, a world of "not saids" called nature, obscured in global claims of eternal truths about human difference, rationality, and transcendence." With the help of ecocriticism, my research explores the development of ecological themes in the writings of four nineteenth-century Austrians from deforestation to industrialization to the growth of gardening culture. In addition, I investigate the nexus between the philosophical and scientific origins of ecology as a discipline and its representation in Austrian literature.

Most of what is known about the neural structures thought to …

Fear And Death In Plato, Emily Austin Jan 2009

Fear And Death In Plato, Emily Austin

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Plato argues that a perfectly virtuous individual will not fear her own death, nor will she fear or grieve the death of a loved one. In Plato's ideal society, citizens are taught not to fear death and are prohibited from public manifestations of grief. It is by no means self-evident, however, that ridding oneself of the fear of death, even if possible, is ethically or psychologically beneficial. This dissertation examines why Plato thinks that the fear of death is morally inappropriate, why he believes it is nevertheless difficult to overcome, and why he thinks acquiring and sustaining the appropriate attitudes …

Developing New Methodologies For Crosslinked Polymeric Nanostructure Syntheses, Chemoselective Modifications, And Applications As Imaging And Delivery Agents, Guorong Sun Jan 2009

Developing New Methodologies For Crosslinked Polymeric Nanostructure Syntheses, Chemoselective Modifications, And Applications As Imaging And Delivery Agents, Guorong Sun

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The overall emphasis of this dissertation research includes the syntheses of amphiphilic block copolymers bearing functional groups through controlled radical polymerization techniques, followed by the aqueous assembly of these block copolymer precursors to construct polymeric nanostructures with different sizes and morphologies. Further chemical modification of the nanostructures afforded functional crosslinked nano-objects with reporting probes for imaging and biocompatible "stealth" materials for tuning the in vivo fate of nanostructures. Amphiphilic block copolymers poly(acrylic acid)-block-polystyrene: PAA-b-PS) with well-defined structures were prepared through nitroxide-mediated radical polymerization: NMP). Using novel pre-functionalization strategies, these block copolymer precursors were functionalized with DOTA for chelating 64Cu and …

Flap Endonuclease 1 Ensures Telomere Replication And Stability, Abhishek Saharia Jan 2009

Flap Endonuclease 1 Ensures Telomere Replication And Stability, Abhishek Saharia

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Telomeres, protein-DNA structures that distinguish the end of a chromosome from a bona fide DNA double strand break, are integral to genomic stability. High fidelity replication of telomeres is indispensable for their stability. Telomere replication is a challenging task that is completed through the coordinated actions of telomere binding proteins and DNA replication and repair proteins in ways that are not well understood. This work focuses on delineating the function of one DNA replication and repair protein, Flap Endonulcease 1: FEN1), in telomere replication and maintenance. I demonstrate that FEN1 is essential for the efficient replication of telomeres through its …

The Mechanisms And Roles Of Feedback Loops For Visual Processing, Jing Shao Jan 2009

The Mechanisms And Roles Of Feedback Loops For Visual Processing, Jing Shao

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Signal flow in the brain is not unidirectional; feedback represents a key element in neural signal processing. To address the question on how do neural feedback loops work in terms of synapses, microcircuitry, and systems dynamics, we developed a chick midbrain slice preparation to study and characterize one important feedback loop within the avian visual system: isthmotectal feedbackloop. The isthmotectal feedback loop consists of the optic tectum: OT) and three nucleus isthmi: Imc, Ipc and SLu. The tectal layer 10 neurons project to ipsilateral Imc, Ipc and SLu in a topographic way. In turn Ipc and SLu send back topographical: …

Sublethal Exposure To Two Alkylphenolic Compounds And Their Influence On Development, Growth And Reproductive Behavior Of Crayfish, Steven J. Gauthier, Daniel A. Bergman Jan 2009

Sublethal Exposure To Two Alkylphenolic Compounds And Their Influence On Development, Growth And Reproductive Behavior Of Crayfish, Steven J. Gauthier, Daniel A. Bergman

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

Invertebrates make up much of the world's biological diversity. Their survival is fundamental to the maintenance of all life, and their ubiquitous distribution is useful when using them as biological indicators of pollution. Many invertebrate species are under threat of extinction due to exposure to various chemical pollutants. Crayfish are an important invertebrate that is affected by chemical pollutants, such as pesticide/herbicide runoff and industrial waste effluents. Crayfish are considered keystone species because they are an important resource for other species and consequently influence diversity and abundance. For these reasons, crayfish are important in terms of better understanding the effects …

Context-Based Assessment And Intervention For Problem Behavior In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Sanja I. Cale, Edward G. Carr, Audrey Blakeley-Smith, Jamie S. Owen-Deschryver Jan 2009

Context-Based Assessment And Intervention For Problem Behavior In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Sanja I. Cale, Edward G. Carr, Audrey Blakeley-Smith, Jamie S. Owen-Deschryver

Peer Reviewed Articles

The present study used a context-based model of assessment and intervention to explore whether interventions that modify context result in reduction of problem behavior in ecologically valid settings (i.e., typical routines implemented by typical education personnel in neighborhood schools). The Contextual Assessment Inventory (CAI) and a post-assessment interview were administered to parents and teachers of eight children with Autism Spectrum Disorder to identify problem contexts. Then, environmental modification techniques were implemented in three priority contexts: namely, transitions, termination of preferred activities, and presence of a feared stimulus. Our results demonstrated an almost complete elimination of problem behavior in the priority …

Bioscience And Economic Development: The Grand Rapids ‘Medical Mile’, Emily Vander Woude Jan 2009

Bioscience And Economic Development: The Grand Rapids ‘Medical Mile’, Emily Vander Woude

SPNA Review

Michigan Street hill in Grand Rapids, Michigan has been dubbed the ‘Medical Mile’ because of the recent developments related to medical research and health care at this location. The impact of this growth is sure to change the face of Grand Rapids, but it is not clear how it will impact the economic situation there. Many other cities around the country and around the globe are putting investment into the bioscience, biotechnology, or life sciences sectoral strategy hoping that it will have a profound effect on their economic vitality. In this paper, I explore theoretical and practical perspectives on the …

Ratification: Useful But Uneven, Deborah A. Demott Jan 2009

Ratification: Useful But Uneven, Deborah A. Demott

Faculty Scholarship

Ratification permits a principal to determine to be bound by the legal consequences of action taken by an agent after the fact of the agent’s conduct when the principal would otherwise not be bound. By ratifying a principal may clarify the effects of uncertainty, furnishing reassurance to the agent, the third party with whom the agent dealt, and other parties interested in the status of the transaction. However, at the point the principal decides whether to ratify, the principal knows facts not known to agent and third party at the time of the agent’s unauthorised transaction, in particular subsequent developments …

Theorizing And Generalizing About Risk Assessment And Regulation Through Comparative Nested Analysis Of Representative Cases, Jonathan B. Wiener, Brendon Swedlow, Denise Kall, Zheng Zhou, James K. Hammitt

Faculty Scholarship

This article provides a framework and offers strategies for theorizing and generalizing about risk assessment and regulation developed in the context of an on-going comparative study of regulatory behavior. Construction of a universe of nearly 3,000 risks and study of a random sample of 100 of these risks allowed us to estimate relative U.S. and European regulatory precaution over a thirty-five-year period. Comparative nested analysis of cases selected from this universe of ecological, health, safety, and other risks or its eighteen categories or ninety-two subcategories of risk sources or causes will allow theory-testing and -building and many further descriptive and …

Categoricalism And Balancing In First And Second Amendment Analysis, Joseph Blocher Jan 2009

Categoricalism And Balancing In First And Second Amendment Analysis, Joseph Blocher

Faculty Scholarship

The least discussed element of District of Columbia v. Heller might ultimately be the most important: the battle between the majority and dissent over the use of categoricalism and balancing in the construction of constitutional doctrine. In Heller, Justice Scalia’s categoricalism essentially prevailed over Justice Breyer’s balancing approach. But as the opinion itself demonstrates, Second Amendment categoricalism raises extremely difficult and still-unanswered questions about how to draw and justify the lines between protected and unprotected “Arms,” people, and arms-bearing purposes. At least until balancing tests appear in Second Amendment doctrine—as they almost inevitably will—the future of the Amendment will depend …

Sustainably managing marine ecosystems has proved nearly impossible, with few success stories. Ecosystem management failures largely stem from the traditional sector-by-sector, issue-by-issue approach to managing ocean-borne activities—an approach that is fundamentally unable to keep pace with the dynamics of coupled human, ecologi cal and oceanographic systems. In the United States today there are over twenty federal agencies and thirty-five coastal states and territories operating under dozens of statutory authorities shaping coastal and ocean policy. Among marine ecologists and policy experts there is an emerging consensus that a major overhaul in U.S. ocean governance is necessary. This Article suggests that the …
