Stress, Adult Attachment, And Academic Success Among Community College Students, Linda L. Petroff Nov 2008

Stress, Adult Attachment, And Academic Success Among Community College Students, Linda L. Petroff

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Little is known about predictors of academic success among two-year community college students. The purpose of this study was to examine the predictors of stress, adult attachment, and their interaction on the outcome variables of grade-point average and course completion among 160 two-year community college participants in a small Midwestern community college. Previous research had found relationships among these variables among four-year college students. Thus, it is important to examine these variables as predictors of academic success among community college students. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire and three surveys which included scales with established reliability and validity: the Inventory of …

Induction Of Plant Defense Gene Expression By Plant Activators And Pseudomonas Syringae Pv. Tomato In Greenhouse-Grown Tomatoes, Maryann Herman, J. K. Davidson, C. D. Smart Nov 2008

Induction Of Plant Defense Gene Expression By Plant Activators And Pseudomonas Syringae Pv. Tomato In Greenhouse-Grown Tomatoes, Maryann Herman, J. K. Davidson, C. D. Smart

Biology Faculty/Staff Publications

Plant activators provide an appealing management option for bacterial diseases of greenhouse-grown tomatoes. Two types of plant activators, one that induces systemic acquired resistance (SAR) and a second that activates induced systemic resistance (ISR), were evaluated for control of Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato and effect on plant defense gene activation. Benzothiadiazole (BTH, SAR-inducing compound) effectively reduced bacterial speck incidence and severity, both alone and in combination with the ISR-inducing product. Application of BTH also led to elevated activation of salicylic acid and ethylene-mediated responses, based on real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis of marker gene expression levels. In contrast, the ISR-inducing …

A New Simplified Derivation Of Nash Bargaining Solution, Tanja Magoc, Vladik Kreinovich Nov 2008

A New Simplified Derivation Of Nash Bargaining Solution, Tanja Magoc, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In the 1950s, the Nobel Prize winner John F. Nash has shown that under certain conditions, the best solution to the bargaining problem is when the product of the (increase in) utilities is the largest. Nash's derivation assumed that we are looking for strategies that assign a single situation to each bargaining situation. In this paper, we propose a simplified derivation of Nash bargaining solution that does not requires this assumption.

The Changing Context, Denise Fort, Helen Ingram, David Feldman, Nathan Mantua, Katharine L. Jacobs, Nancy Beller-Simms

Faculty Book Display Case

Faced with mounting pressures from a changing climate, an increasing population, a transitory populace, and varying access to available natural resources, decision makers, scientists, and resource managers have an immediate need to understand, obtain, and better integrate climate forecasts and observational data in near- and long-term planning. Reducing our societal vulnerability to variabilities and changes in climate depends upon our ability to bridge the gap between climate science and the implementation of scientific understanding in our management of critical resources, arguably the most important of which is water. Our ability to adapt and respond to climate variability and change depends, …

Abrupt Transition From A Free, Repulsive To A Condensed, Attractive Dna Phase, Induced By Multivalent Polyamine Cations, Xiangyun Qiu, Kurt Andresen, Jessica S. Lamb, Lisa W. Kwok, Lois Pollack Nov 2008

Abrupt Transition From A Free, Repulsive To A Condensed, Attractive Dna Phase, Induced By Multivalent Polyamine Cations, Xiangyun Qiu, Kurt Andresen, Jessica S. Lamb, Lisa W. Kwok, Lois Pollack

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We have investigated the energetics of DNA condensation by multivalent polyamine cations. Solution small angle x-ray scattering was used to monitor interactions between short 25 base pair dsDNA strands in the free supernatant DNA phase that coexists with the condensed DNA phase. Interestingly, when tetravalent spermine is used, significant inter-DNA repulsion is observed in the free phase, in contrast with the presumed inter-DNA attraction in the coexisting condensed phase. DNA condensation thus appears to be a discrete, first-order-like, transition from a repulsive gaseous to an attractive condensed solid phase, in accord with the reported all-or-none condensation of giant DNA. We …

Toward Using National Cancer Surveillance Data For Preventing And Controlling Cervical And Other Human Papillomavirus-Associated Cancers In The Us, Mona Saraiya, Faruque Ahmed, Mary White, Herschel Lawson, Elizabeth R. Unger, Christie Eheman

United States Public Health Resources

This supplement, known as the ABHACUS (Assessing the Burden of HPV-Associated Cancers in the United States) supplement, contains 22 articles. Together, these articles provide a comprehensive snapshot of data related to the occurrence and control of multiple cancers that have been associated with the human papillomavirus (HPV). These analyses highlight the burden of HPV associated cancers in the US population as a whole and among vulnerable population subgroups. We anticipate that these findings will be an important resource for enhancing existing strategies for the prevention and control of HPV associated cancers.

HPV is estimated to be responsible for 5.2% of …

Surgical Management Of Blunt Pancreatic Trauma: A Modus Operandi Or Individualized Therapy?, Muhammad Rizwan Khan, Kiran Ejaz Nov 2008

Surgical Management Of Blunt Pancreatic Trauma: A Modus Operandi Or Individualized Therapy?, Muhammad Rizwan Khan, Kiran Ejaz

Section of General Surgery

The overall rate of blunt pancreatic trauma observed in level one trauma centers is rather low compared to other injuries, with a reported prevalence of 0.4 per 100,000 hospital admissions. The situation may be further complicated by the presence of associated major visceral injuries in these patients. A number of previous reports indicate that blunt pancreatic trauma carries high morbidity and mortality rates, especially when diagnosis is delayed or inappropriate surgery is attempted. Many mandate prompt surgical explorations for organ-specific diagnosis on CT; however other literature and upcoming studies prove otherwise. Over the years, several technologic advances have increased the …

Antibody Responses Of Cervids (Cervus Elaphus) Following Experimental Mycobacterium Bovis Infection And The Implications For Immunodiagnosis, Noel P. Harrington, Om P. Surujballi, John F. Prescott, J. Robert Duncan, W. Ray Waters, Konstantin Lyashchenko, Rena Greenwald Nov 2008

Antibody Responses Of Cervids (Cervus Elaphus) Following Experimental Mycobacterium Bovis Infection And The Implications For Immunodiagnosis, Noel P. Harrington, Om P. Surujballi, John F. Prescott, J. Robert Duncan, W. Ray Waters, Konstantin Lyashchenko, Rena Greenwald

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Captive and free-ranging wildlife animals are implicated in the maintenance and transmission of bovine tuberculosis and therefore pose a significant obstacle to eradication of the disease from domestic livestock. The current antemortem diagnostic method, the intradermal tuberculin skin test, is impractical for routine use with many wild animals. Antibody-based assays are particularly attractive because the animals are handled only once and immediate processing of the sample is not required. This report characterizes the antibody responses of red deer-elk hybrids (Cervus elaphus) against Mycobacterium bovis and subsequently evaluates the diagnostic performance of select antigens in a rapid-test format. Sequential …

Bong Hits 4 Jesus: Making Sense Of Free Speech In High Schools, Mark W. Cordes

College of Law Faculty Publications

The Supreme Court’s most recent high school speech case, Morse v. Fredericks, 127 S.Ct. 2618 (2007), generated much attention, perhaps more than the specific issue before the Court was worth. Much of that attention, of course, was attributable to the informal name for the case - “Bong Hits 4 Jesus.” By itself that was enough to create a groundswell of curiosity and allowed the media to make the normally dry and stuffy workings of the Supreme Court sound downright fun. Beyond that, however, the case involved the intersection of a highly valued liberty, free speech, with the tumultuous setting of …

The Short-Term Effects Of Prescribed Burning On Biomass Removal And The Release Of Nitrogen And Phosphorus In A Treatment Wetland, J. R. White, L. M. Gardner, M. Sees, R. Corstanje Nov 2008

The Short-Term Effects Of Prescribed Burning On Biomass Removal And The Release Of Nitrogen And Phosphorus In A Treatment Wetland, J. R. White, L. M. Gardner, M. Sees, R. Corstanje

Faculty Publications

Nutrient removal by constructed wetlands can decline over time due to the accumulation of organic matter. A prescribed burn is one of many management strategies used to remove detritus in macrophyte-dominated systems. We quantified the short-term effects on effluent water quality and the amount of aboveground detritus removed from a prescribed burn event. Surface water outflow concentrations were approximately three times higher for P and 1.5 times higher for total Kjeldhal nitrogen (TKN) following the burn event when compared to the control. The length of time over which the fire effect was significant (P < 0.05), 3 d for TKN and up to 23 d for P fractions. Over time, the concentration of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in the effluent decreased, but was compensated with increases in dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) and particulate phosphorus (PP), such that net total P remained the same. Total aboveground biomass decreased by 68.5% as a result of the burn, however, much of the live vegetation was converted to standing dead material. These results demonstrate that a prescribed burn can significantly decrease the amount of senescent organic matter in a constructed wetland. However, short-term nutrient releases following the burn could increase effluent nutrient concentrations. Therefore, management strategies should include hydraulically isolating the burned area immediately following the burn event to prevent nutrient export. Educational Motivation In Heritage Speakers Of Spanish, Benoit B. Berho Nov 2008

Educational Motivation In Heritage Speakers Of Spanish, Benoit B. Berho

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This study examined the themes associated with the lack of motivation for school in middle school students, specifically among Heritage Speakers of Spanish. The researcher used two methods to examine student and parent attitudes and beliefs about school and education, as attitudes and beliefs are strongly linked to motivation. The researcher did face-to-face interviews of Mexican parents with direct questions about education and school, and asked middle school students of Mexican descent to read the first part of a short selection about a Mexican immigrant boy in school, then complete the story using their imagination. The researcher compiled the parents' …

The Past, Present, And Future Of The United Nations: A Comment On Paul Kennedy And The Parliament Of Man, Kenneth Anderson

Book Reviews

This is the English language version of an essay (10,000 words) appearing in the Revista de Libros (Madrid), considering the history and future of the United Nations and global governance through the lens of Paul Kennedy's recent work, The Parliament of Man. The essay is highly skeptical of what it describes as platonism about the future of the UN as the seat of global governance. It offers an alternative view of how to consider the work of the UN, in three areas: security, economic development, and values. The essay argues that, particularly with the rise of new great power tensions …

Blood Pressure Lowering And Vasomodulator Effects Of Piperine, Syed Intasar Husain Taqvi, Abdul Jabbar Shah, Anwar Gilani Nov 2008

Blood Pressure Lowering And Vasomodulator Effects Of Piperine, Syed Intasar Husain Taqvi, Abdul Jabbar Shah, Anwar Gilani

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

This study was aimed to explore underlying mechanism(s) of cardiovascular effects of piperine. Intravenous administration of piperine caused a dose-dependent (1 to 10 mg/kg) decrease in mean arterial pressure (MAP) in normotensive anesthetized rats, the next higher dose (30 mg/kg) did not cause any further change in MAP. The fall in blood pressure (BP) was followed by small increase in MAP after each dose. In Langendorrf's rabbit heart preparation, piperine caused partial inhibition and verapamil caused complete inhibition of force and rate of ventricular contractions and coronary flow. In rabbit aortic rings, piperine inhibited high K(+) (80 mM) precontractions and …
