North Shore Bays Benthic Mapping: Groundtruth Studies Gis Data, Robert M. Cerrato, Lee Holt

SoMAS Research Data

We combined high-resolution remote sensing techniques with detailed study of the physical and faunal characteristics at point locations in different seafloor environments within the Oyster Bay- Cold Spring Harbor Complex, the Huntington-Northport Bay Complex, and Port Jefferson Harbor, including Conscience Bay. High-resolution backscatter and bathymetric maps created by side scan and multibeam sonar surveys were used to classify the seabed into provinces. Samples for macrofauna and sediment properties were collected within each province to provide "ground truth" for the acoustic maps. Oyster Bay, Huntington Harbor, and Port Jefferson Harbor were sampled at 40, 38, and 50 locations, respectively, with two …

On Cross-Cultural Interpretations Of Aboriginal Art, Darren Jorgensen Nov 2008

On Cross-Cultural Interpretations Of Aboriginal Art, Darren Jorgensen

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

This paper critiques three schools of international art scholarship and their relevance to Australian Aboriginal art from remote communities. These schools are primitivism, histories of ornament and aesthetic theory. This is with a view to looking beyond accounts of Aboriginal art as representational, and toward a cross-cultural and sensual account of its practice. While primitivism influenced the scholarship on high art, histories of ornament and aesthetic theory offer new approaches to this art, and new ways of thinking about Aboriginal painting. The paper partly argues that the extensive influence of primitivism has prevented these latter areas of study in having …

Tethering Polypeptides Through Bifunctional Peg Cross-Linking Agents To Probe Protein Function: Application To Atp Synthase., Daniel J Cipriano, Stanley D Dunn Nov 2008

Tethering Polypeptides Through Bifunctional Peg Cross-Linking Agents To Probe Protein Function: Application To Atp Synthase., Daniel J Cipriano, Stanley D Dunn

Biochemistry Publications

Chemical crosslinking mediated by short bifunctional reagents has been widely used for determining physical relationships among polypeptides in multisubunit proteins, but less often for functional studies. Here we introduce the approach of tethering polypeptides by using bifunctional reagents containing a lengthy, flexible PEG linker as a form of crosslinking especially suited to functional analyses. The rotary molecular motor ATP synthase was used as a model subject. Single cysteine residues were introduced into selected positions of ATP synthase epsilon subunit, a component of the rotor subcomplex of the enzyme, and the unrelated maltose binding protein (MBP), then the two purified recombinant …

Referral In The Wake Of Conscientious Objection To Abortion, Carolyn Mcleod Nov 2008

Referral In The Wake Of Conscientious Objection To Abortion, Carolyn Mcleod

Philosophy Publications

Currently, the preferred accommodation for conscientious objection to abortion in medicine is to allow the objector to refuse to accede to the patient's request so long as the objector refers the patient to a physician who performs abortions. The referral part of this arrangement is controversial, however. Pro-life advocates claim that referrals make objectors complicit in the performance of acts that they, the objectors, find morally offensive. McLeod argues that the referral requirement is justifiable, although not in the way that people usually assume.

The Teaching Of Swimming Based On A Model Derived From The Causes Of Drowning, Robert Keig Stallman, Malfrid Junge, Turid Blixt Nov 2008

The Teaching Of Swimming Based On A Model Derived From The Causes Of Drowning, Robert Keig Stallman, Malfrid Junge, Turid Blixt

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This paper proposes that the teaching of beginner swimming should be organized according to the causes of drowning. We surveyed drowning reports, interviewed drowning survivors, and observed simulated drowning victims to determine common characteristics associated with drowning. We also reviewed 25 swimming instructional programs offered by well-recognized national programs from 18 separate countries and identified 8 common beginning swimming skills. These skills could be closely connected with the causes of drowning. We proposed a definition for being able to swim that should be given common international acceptance so that learning to swim can actually provide skills needed for preventing drowning.

Book Review: James Joyce: The Last Journey, Robert Means

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Although, James Joyce once had to make a large deposit in a Swiss bank to ensure that he and his family would not become welfare cases of the Swiss government (Edel 33) - this was in 1940 when Joyce and his family fled Paris for Zurich - it's not the city's financial reputation that is the most important connection that Zurich has to the life and work of the author of Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. Zurich, with its deserved reputation as a cosmopolitan haven for exiles, as a center of medicine, and as the birthplace of psychoanalysis, provided Joyce with …

Leasing Decisions Need To Be Considered Carefully For The Volatile Year Ahead, Bruce B. Johnson, Sandi Alswager Karstens Nov 2008

Leasing Decisions Need To Be Considered Carefully For The Volatile Year Ahead, Bruce B. Johnson, Sandi Alswager Karstens

Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources: News Releases

LINCOLN, Neb. & Landowners and tenants face difficult leasing decisions for the year ahead, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln agricultural economist says.

It will be especially challenging to determine a fair and reasonable leasing agreement for both parties, said Bruce Johnson, UNL agricultural economist.

"Production agriculture is already risky, but faced with the current financial crisis there seems to be little disagreement that we are, in the very least, staring into the face of a potentially long and deep global recession," Johnson said.

In recent years, Nebraskans and others in the Midwest have enjoyed profitable times. In addition, thanks to the …

Brain Drain in Nebraska: What do the data show?

Introduction

Nebraska is a growing state, but it is a slowly growing state. Over the last decade, population growth in Nebraska, at 0.6% per year, has lagged the national average rate of 1.0%. This gap in growth rates is large in real terms. Given a current population of approximately 1.8 million persons, Nebraska would grow by approximately 18,000 persons per year if it grew at the national growth rate of 1.0% per year. Instead, the state only adds about 11,000 persons per year. A lower growth rate results in a loss …

Economic Development Benefits From Wind Power In Nebraska: A Report For The Nebraska Energy Office, E. Lantz Nov 2008

Economic Development Benefits From Wind Power In Nebraska: A Report For The Nebraska Energy Office, E. Lantz

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Wind power constituted more than 35% of new U.S. electric generating capacity in 2007. Common drivers of wind power include Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS), the federal production tax credit (PTC), and rural economic development benefits. Continued expansion of the wind industry into Nebraska would bring new employment and economic development to Nebraska and the country. This report by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) focuses on the economic development impacts that would result in Nebraska from development and operation of wind power in the state as envisioned in the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) report 20% Wind Energy by 2030 …

The 1525 Cromberger Crónica Del Cid: From Press To Lap, Anthony Cárdenas-Rotunno Nov 2008

The 1525 Cromberger Crónica Del Cid: From Press To Lap, Anthony Cárdenas-Rotunno

Research Papers

In light of the 800th anniversary and celebration of the Poema de mio Cid, this study takes into consideration the 1525 version of the Cid legend titled Crónica del muy esforçado cavallero el Cid Ruy Díaz Campeador, exemplar R/26575 of the Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid. It examines the relationship of woodcuts to text, the relationship of the 1525 version to other versions of the Crónica del Cid as these texts are generally known; and finally discusses notions of diffusion and canonicity as regards this particular work, suggesting that this work, along with other Cidian chronicles may have had more to …

Corporate Misconduct And The Perfect Storm Of Shareholder Litigation, Jessica Erickson Nov 2008

Corporate Misconduct And The Perfect Storm Of Shareholder Litigation, Jessica Erickson

Notre Dame Law Review

When it comes to combating corporate misconduct, is more litigation necessarily better? The conventional wisdom is that we should deploy every weapon in the law's arsenal to combat corporate misconduct: This wisdom, however, reflects legal scholarship that is confined to analyzing securities class actions and derivative suits in isolation, with little inquiry into the interplay between them. By failing to take a broader view of shareholder litigation, legal scholars have missed an opportunity to provide courts with the conceptual tools necessary to meet the complex challenges of complex corporate litigation. In courtrooms and boardrooms across the country, a debate is …

Jointed Goatgrass Management With Imazamox-Resistant Cultivars In A Winter Wheat–Fallow Rotation, Andrew R. Kniss, Drew J. Lyon, Stephen D. Miller

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

Jointed goatgrass (Aegilops cylindrica Host) is an economically important weed in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)–fallow production regions of the United States. Few options exist for management of jointed goatgrass in winter wheat due to the close genetic relationship between the two species. This research evaluated use of imazamox herbicide (2-[(RS)-4-isopropyl-4- methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl]-5-methoxymethylnicotinic acid) in an imazamox-resistant (IR) winter wheat–fallow rotation over 6 yr when grown continuously or in rotation with a conventional winter wheat cultivar. The objectives of this study were to compare use patterns of IR technology in winter wheat with respect to jointed goatgrass density and …

On The Electrostatic Component Of Protein-Protein Binding Free Energy, Kemper Talley, Carmen Ng, Michael Shoppell, Petras Kundrotas, Emil Alexov

Publications

Calculations of electrostatic properties of protein-protein complexes are usually done within framework of a model with a certain set of parameters. In this paper we present a comprehensive statistical analysis of the sensitivity of the electrostatic component of binding free energy (DeltaDeltaGel) with respect with different force fields (Charmm, Amber, and OPLS), different values of the internal dielectric constant, and different presentations of molecular surface (different values of the probe radius). The study was done using the largest so far set of entries comprising 260 hetero and 2148 homo protein-protein complexes extracted from a previously developed database of protein complexes …

We present a detailed study of the prompt and afterglow emission from Swift GRB 061126 using BAT, XRT, UVOT data and multicolor optical imaging from 10 ground-based telescopes. GRB 061126 was a long burst (T90 ¼191 s) with four overlapping peaks in its -ray light curve. The X-ray afterglow, observed from 26 minutes to 20 days after the burst, shows a simple power-law decay with X ¼1:290 Æ0:008. Optical observations presented here cover the time range from 258 s (Faulkes Telescope North) to 15 days (Gemini North) after the burst; the decay rate of the optical afterglow shows a steep-to-shallow …
