Testing For Parameter Stability In Quantile Regression Models, Liangjun Su, Zhijie Xiao Nov 2008

Testing For Parameter Stability In Quantile Regression Models, Liangjun Su, Zhijie Xiao

Research Collection School Of Economics

We propose a test for structural change of conditional distribution in dynamic regression models. The test is constructed based on time series regression quantile estimates and complements conventional parameter instability tests in least-square type regression models. Asymptotic distribution for our test under the null hypothesis is derived.

An Educational Initiative To Promote Evidence-Based Practice, Laurel Ann Ecoff Phd, Ms, Rn, Nea-Bc

Dissertations

Evidence-based practice (EBP), recognized as essential in providing quality patient care and achieving optimal outcomes, is the integration of the best research evidence, patient preference, and clinician expertise. Healthcare providers must attain expertise in integrating EBP into the clinical setting. Fellowships are one strategy reported in the literature to assist nurses in acquiring needed knowledge and skills for evidence-based care. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention, the Evidence-Based Practice Institute (EPBI), to teach nurses the process of EBP for project implementation to improve nursing and patient outcomes. This descriptive study used a …

Academic Achievement Of Students In A Charter Homeschool, Mary A. Leeds Edd Nov 2008

Academic Achievement Of Students In A Charter Homeschool, Mary A. Leeds Edd

Dissertations

A recent development in education is the public charter school as a homeschool model. In several states across the nation, a child may enroll in an independent study program of a public charter school and base his or her studies in the home. This model in the realm of education is called charter homeschool. The state of California has over 120 operating charter homeschools, also known as independent study programs or non-classroom based charter schools. The delivery of instruction from non-classroom based programs has begun to challenge traditional definitions of public schooling. The increased state accountability demands of student academic …

Configuring Expert Knowledge: The Consultant As Sector Specialist, Robin Fincham, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Karen Handley, Andrew Sturdy Nov 2008

Configuring Expert Knowledge: The Consultant As Sector Specialist, Robin Fincham, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Karen Handley, Andrew Sturdy

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study defines an aspect of consultant knowledge that provides credibility without claiming unrealistic status for a field like consulting. Our focus is the "sector knowledge" that consultants accumulate which derives from repeated assignments in the industrial sector in which the client organization resides. This has been under-researched partly because of an emphasis oil knowledge as technique and method. But knowledge configured around the sector enables consultants to play the role of the outside expert and draw oil a language and experiences held in common with the client. The paper explores the role of consultants as sector intermediaries through a …

Real Exchange Rate And International Reserves In An Era Of Growing Financial And Trade Integration, Joshua Aizenman, Daniel Riera-Crichton Nov 2008

Real Exchange Rate And International Reserves In An Era Of Growing Financial And Trade Integration, Joshua Aizenman, Daniel Riera-Crichton

All Faculty Scholarship

This paper evaluates the impact of international reserves, terms-of-trade shocks, and capital flows on the real exchange rate (REER). We observe that international reserves cushion the impact of terms-oftrade shocks on REER, and that this effect is important for developing but not for industrial countries. This buffer effect is especially significant for Asian countries, and for countries exporting natural resources. Financial depth reduces the buffer role of international reserves in developing countries. Developing countries' REERs seem to be more sensitive to changes in reserve assets; whereas industrial countries display a significant relationship between hot money and REER. © 2008 by …

Trading Information For Safety: Immigrant Informants, Federal Law-Enforcement Agents, And The Viability Of Non-Deportation Agreements, Colleen Melody Nov 2008

Trading Information For Safety: Immigrant Informants, Federal Law-Enforcement Agents, And The Viability Of Non-Deportation Agreements, Colleen Melody

Washington Law Review

Federal law-enforcement agents use informants to help guide investigations. Immigrants sometimes possess valuable information about organized crime connected with their home countries. To persuade an immigrant to divulge such information, federal agents and prosecutors often promise to reward cooperation with permission to stay in the United States. Non-deportation is a persuasive enticement to an informant who might otherwise be unwilling to help; criminal groups would likely harm a known informant returning home. After deciding to cooperate, many immigrants are placed in deportation proceedings notwithstanding their deals. This Comment discusses the persistent legal conundrum faced by immigrant informants after the U.S. …

Unemployment Insurance Generosity: A Trans-Atlantic Comparison, Stephane Pallage, Lyle Scruggs, Christian Zimmermann Nov 2008

Unemployment Insurance Generosity: A Trans-Atlantic Comparison, Stephane Pallage, Lyle Scruggs, Christian Zimmermann

Economics Working Papers

The goal of this paper is to establish if unemployment insurance policies are more generous in Europe than in the United States, and by how much. We take the examples of France and one particular American state, Ohio, and use the methodology of Pallage, Scruggs and Zimmermann (2008) to find a unique parameter value for each region that fully characterizes the generosity of the system. These two values can then be used in structural models that compare the regions, for example to explain the differences in unemployment rates.

Measuring Unemployment Insurance Generosity, Stephane Pallage, Lyle Scruggs, Christian Zimmermann Nov 2008

Measuring Unemployment Insurance Generosity, Stephane Pallage, Lyle Scruggs, Christian Zimmermann

Economics Working Papers

In this paper, we develop a methodology to summarize the various policy parameters of an unemployment insurance scheme into a single generosity parameter. Unemployment insurance policies are multdimensional objects. They are typically defined by waiting periods, eligibility duration, benefit levels and asset tests when eligible, which makes intertemporal or international comparisons difficult. To make things worse, labor market conditions, such as the likelihood and duration of unemployment matter when assessing the generosity of different policies. We build a first model with such complex characteristics. Our model features heterogeneous agents that are liquidity constrained but can self-insure. We then build a …

A Review Of The Empirical Evidence On The Effects Of Fiscal Decentralization On Economic Efficiency: With Comments On Tax Devolution To Scotland, Paul Hallwood, Ronald Macdonald Nov 2008

A Review Of The Empirical Evidence On The Effects Of Fiscal Decentralization On Economic Efficiency: With Comments On Tax Devolution To Scotland, Paul Hallwood, Ronald Macdonald

Economics Working Papers

This paper reviews the existing empirical evidence on tax decentralization ("tax .devolution") from central government to sub-central government. Sub-central government is taken to be levels above the local level: such as within the UK at the level of Scottish government/executive in Edinburgh, and at the provincial government level in Canada or Spain. Our interpretation of the literature is that there is increasing empirical support for the proposition that tax decentralization helps in promoting economic efficiency and economic growth. It is noted that a distinction must be drawn between tax decentralization and spending decentralization. Where tax decentralization follows spending decentralization - …

Genetic Change Following Fire In Populations Of A Seed-Banking Perennial Plant, Rebecca W. Dolan, Pedro F. Quintana-Ascencio, Eric S. Menges Nov 2008

Genetic Change Following Fire In Populations Of A Seed-Banking Perennial Plant, Rebecca W. Dolan, Pedro F. Quintana-Ascencio, Eric S. Menges

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Disturbances such as fire have the potential to remove genetic variation, but seed banks may counter this loss by restoring alleles through a reservoir effect. We used allozyme analysis to characterize genetic change in two populations of the perennial Hypericum cumulicola, an endemic of the fire-prone Florida scrub. We assessed genetic variation before and 1, 2, and 3 years after fire that killed nearly all aboveground plants. Populations increased in size following fire, with most seedlings likely recruited from a persistent seed bank. Four of five loci were variable. Most alleles were present in low frequencies, but our large sample …

Who Cares About Polar Regions? Results From A Survey Of U.S. Public Opinion, Lawrence C. Hamilton Nov 2008

Who Cares About Polar Regions? Results From A Survey Of U.S. Public Opinion, Lawrence C. Hamilton

Sociology

Abstract

What do members of the general public know about polar regions, and how much do they care? Who knows or cares? This paper explores data from the General Social Survey (GSS), which in 2006 questioned a representative sample of more than 1800 U.S. adults about their knowledge and opinions concerning polar regions. The polar survey items were modeled on long-running GSS assessments of general science knowledge and opinions, recently summarized in the U.S. National Science Board's report Science and Engineering Indicators 2008. Polar knowledge proves to be limited but certainly not absent among survey respondents. Polar knowledge, general science …
