Finding The Tort Of Terrorism In International Law, Beth Van Schaack Jan 2008

Finding The Tort Of Terrorism In International Law, Beth Van Schaack

Faculty Publications

This Article - part of a symposium on civil litigation and terrorism - focuses on the potential of the Alien Tort Statute (ATS) to serve as a vehicle for asserting civil claims in U.S. courts for acts of terrorism. Although this paper primarily considers terrorism torts under the "law of nations" prong of the ATS (which requires a showing that the relevant prohibition is part of customary international law), terrorism torts may provide a vehicle for activating the ATS's dormant treaty prong as well, given the strong support for the terrorism treaties exhibited by the United States and the high …

Judging Vanessa: Norm Setting And Deviance In The Law Of Motherhood, Michelle Oberman Jan 2008

Judging Vanessa: Norm Setting And Deviance In The Law Of Motherhood, Michelle Oberman

Faculty Publications

This article undertakes an ethnographic approach to the study of legal and societal norms surrounding motherhood in the U.S. It builds upon my more conventional legal and epidemiological work on maternal filicide by telling the stories, both legal and personal, of Vanessa, a woman I interviewed in the course of writing my most recent book, When Mothers Kill: Interviews from Prison. (NYU Press, 2008). In re-telling Vanessa's story, the current article exposes the limitations in the current binary classification of mothers as either good or bad. Of broader interest, I have elected to re-tell Vanessa's story by placing myself in …

Dependable And Certifiable Real-World Systems – Issue Of Software Engineering Education, Andrew J. Kornecki Jan 2008

Dependable And Certifiable Real-World Systems – Issue Of Software Engineering Education, Andrew J. Kornecki

Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Daytona Beach

Embedded software and dedicated hardware are vital elements of the modern world, from personal electronics to transportation, from communication to aerospace, from military to gaming, from medical systems to banking. Combinations of even minor hardware or software defects in a complex system may lead to violation of safety with or even without evident system failure, a major problem that the computing profession faces is the lack of a universal approach to unite the dissimilar viewpoints presented by computer science, with its discrete and mathematical underpinnings, and by computer engineering, which focuses on building real systems and considering spatial and material …

Benediction And Malediction In Fulani Culture: Exploring An Afro-Muslim Perception Of The Socio-Spiritual Dimensions Of Success And Failure, Mohamed S. Camara Jan 2008

Benediction And Malediction In Fulani Culture: Exploring An Afro-Muslim Perception Of The Socio-Spiritual Dimensions Of Success And Failure, Mohamed S. Camara

Security Studies & International Affairs - Daytona Beach

This article is a discussion of the Fulani belief in barki (benediction) and kuddi (malediction) in an attempt to show how it informs this deeply religious West African society's perception of success and failure and how, in turn, this perception affects the society's understandings of the political and economic challenges in Africa. Because the Fulani are an Afro-Muslim society, the article is also a discussion of the convergence of indigenous African traditions and Islamic ones as observed in the socio-religious beliefs of the Fulani of Guinea.

Geographic Patterns, Patrick G. Donnelly Jan 2008

Geographic Patterns, Patrick G. Donnelly

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications

Criminologists, law enforcement officials, and city planners have long been interested in the relationship between geography and crime. Some of the earliest empirical studies of crime were conducted in the 1830s and 1840s by Andre Michel Guerry and Adolphe Quetelet, who plotted recorded crimes on maps and showed considerable variation in the numbers of crimes across geographic areas. As part of the Chicago ecological school of the 1920s and 1930s, Clifford Shaw and Henry McKay examined rates of delinquency in reference to the concentric zones in urban areas. The development of social area analysis and factor analytic techniques in the …

Victorian Restriction, Restraint, And Escape In The Children's Tales Of Beatrix Potter, Mandy L. Dewilde Jan 2008

Victorian Restriction, Restraint, And Escape In The Children's Tales Of Beatrix Potter, Mandy L. Dewilde

Masters Theses

The fantasy works of Beatrix Potter have entertained children of all ages for decades. Many children are familiar with the stories of Peter Rabbit, Tom Kitten, The Flopsy Bunnies, and the dreamy prints of fuzzy little animals in jackets and aprons that accompany them. The characters of Beatrix Potter’s beloved children’s stories have transcended the written page and been marketed on infant layettes, children’s dinnerware, stationary, bedroom linens, and even on cartons of infant formula. However, beneath these cheery stories, which seem to imply that children should perhaps heed their parents’ advice concerning socially accepted conduct. Potter’s …

Proteomic Profiling Of Endorepellin Angiostatic Activity On Human Endothelial Cells., Jason J Zoeller, Renato V Iozzo Jan 2008

Proteomic Profiling Of Endorepellin Angiostatic Activity On Human Endothelial Cells., Jason J Zoeller, Renato V Iozzo

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Endorepellin, the C-terminal domain V of the heparan sulfate proteoglycan perlecan, exhibits powerful and targeted anti-angiogenic activity on endothelial cells. To identify proteins involved with endorepellin anti-angiogenic action, we performed an extensive comparative proteomic analysis between vehicle- and endorepellin-treated human endothelial cells. RESULTS: Proteomic analysis of endorepellin influence on human umbilical vein endothelial cells identified five differentially expressed proteins, three of which (beta-actin, calreticulin, and chaperonin/Hsp60) were down-regulated and two of which (vimentin and the beta subunit of prolyl 4-hydroxylase also known as protein disulfide isomerase) were up-regulated in response to endorepellin treatment-and associated with a fold change (endorepellin/control) …

Commending Religion To All Around Us: Baptist Church Discipline, 1780-1850, Claire White Jan 2008

Commending Religion To All Around Us: Baptist Church Discipline, 1780-1850, Claire White

Psi Sigma Siren

In 1818, a letter signed “B.” was sent to The American Baptist Magazine and Missionary Intelligencer. The letter, titled “Things to be set in order in the churches,” stated that the Baptists’ “moral and social habits, including [their] general intercourse with the world, must be such, as to commend religion to all around us.” While all religions fashion themselves pure and saintly, B., and his Baptist contemporaries, truly believed that their discipline and social habits, not just their internal piety, made them the world’s saviors. In the early decades of the nineteenth century, American Baptist congregations were flourishing. In 1740, …

Management Techniques For The Control Of Sahara Mustard (Brassica Tournefortii) In The Mojave Desert, Dianne N. Bangle, Scott R. Abella, Public Lands Institute,

Vegetation Monitoring Presentations

In the southwestern United States, Brassica tournefortii(Sahara mustard) is a highly invasive plant that colonizes roadsides, beaches, sand dunes, and open desert threatening native annuals. Sahara mustard is believed to contribute to fuel loads in the Mojave Desert in areas where Schismussp. and Bromussp. occur. Sahara mustard may act as ladder fuel, thereby facilitating the spread of fire throughout the landscape. Manpower limitations and insufficient funding limits the abilities of managers to effectively control Sahara mustard. We tested seed germinability in Sahara mustard after fruiting plants were treated with either 2%, 5%, or 12% triclopyr. Sahara mustard seed pods were …
