Exotic Annual Plant Invasions And Their Relationships To Roads And Native Perennial Species In The Mojave Desert, Southwestern Usa, Donovan J. Craig, Jill Pacovsky Craig, Scott R. Abella

Vegetation Monitoring Presentations

For the last five years, roadside monitoring for exotic invasive species has been a common practice for documenting distributions in Clark County, Nevada (Abella et al., in press). Yet, studies have shown that weed relationships to road corridors differ depending upon the natural system (Hansen and Clevenger, 2005). In the Mojave Desert, it is unknown whether exotic species are limited to or even predominant along roadsides.

Compounding this uncertainty, fertile islands under shrubs are known to enhance conditions for many annuals (Thompson et al., 2005). Thus, a site’s shrub composition could influence exotic invasive plant distributions.

Response Of Sahara Mustard (Brassica Tournefortii) To Water Addition And Soil Disturbance, Alexis Suazo, Jessica E. Spencer, Scott R. Abella

Vegetation Monitoring Presentations

Invasive exotic species can have a significant impact on the structure, function, and diversity of ecological communities. Sahara mustard (Brassica tournefortii) is one of the top exotic invasive species spreading through the southwestern deserts of North America. In arid environments, it is well documented that species abundance is sensitive to rainfall (Beatly 1974, Ernest et al. 2000). In the Mojave Desert, winter precipitation can trigger massive germination events (Beatly 1974). As a winter annual, Sahara mustard may have a positive response to winter precipitation by germinating, growing, and reproducing before native annuals, monopolizing soil moisture and nutrients, and potentially changing …

A Unique Old-Growth Ponderosa Pine Forest In Northern Arizona, Scott R. Abella Jan 2008

A Unique Old-Growth Ponderosa Pine Forest In Northern Arizona, Scott R. Abella

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

Old-growth ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forests are uncommon in the Southwest, and only one oldgrowth forest (the Gus Pearson Natural Area [GPNA]) has been researched in the ponderosa pine belt surrounding the city of Flagstaff in northern Arizona. The purpose of this study was to measure soil characteristics, current and pre-Euro-American settlement (1885) tree structure, and understory plant composition in a 6-ha remnant old-growth forest on volcanic, red cinder soils. Soil bulk density was extremely low (0.21 Mg/m3) in this forest because of high volumetric contents of cinders >2 mm diameter. As a result, volumetric soil moisture, organic C, and …

Housing In The Nation’S Micropolitan Areas: A First Look, Robert E. Lang, Karen A. Danielsen Jan 2008

Housing In The Nation’S Micropolitan Areas: A First Look, Robert E. Lang, Karen A. Danielsen

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

Micropolitan area is a newly defined unit of analysis for examining housing affordability. Before the creation of micropolitan areas in 2003, U.S. counties were categorized as either metropolitan or nonmetropolitan. The category of micropolitan area allows for a more detailed analysis of housing affordability conditions in areas with populations less than metropolitan areas but more than nonmetropolitan areas. Variables examined in this analysis of micropolitan areas include demographic and housing characteristics. A policy section highlights how the findings from this analysis may be applied to micropolitan geography.

Managing With Foresight And Insight, Christine G. Springer Jan 2008

Managing With Foresight And Insight, Christine G. Springer

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

As we begin the New Year, it is important to look at the trends that need to be considered in the future and how or if these driving forces will define what strategic management means in 2008. It is also important to understand that looking to the past alone for guidance may skew our view of present facts even when those facts are supported by sound data. Strategic managers make sense out of what is going on around them and what is possible in the future by looking and listening to forecasts for the future, to what is critical for …

Everybody Is Making Love/Or Else Expecting Rain: Considering The Sexual Autonomy Rights Of Persons Institutionalized Because Of Mental Disability In Forensic Hospitals And In Asia, Michael L. Perlin Jan 2008

Everybody Is Making Love/Or Else Expecting Rain: Considering The Sexual Autonomy Rights Of Persons Institutionalized Because Of Mental Disability In Forensic Hospitals And In Asia, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

One of the most controversial policy questions in all of institutional mental disability law is the extent to which patients in psychiatric hospitals have a right to voluntary sexual interaction. The resolution of this matter involves the resolution of difficult and sensitive questions of law, social policy, clinical judgment, politics, religion, and family structures.

As difficult as these questions are in cases involving civil hospitals, the difficulties are exacerbated when the topic is the application of the right in forensic hospitals. Such facilities typically house individuals involved in the criminal justice system (either those who may be incompetent to stand …

Data were collected through the use of electronic questionnaires from a sample of 36 registered nurses from the Sigma Theta Tau Kappa Epsilon Chapterat- Large.

Findings revealed significant differences among nurses working 10 hour shifts and their accumulation of sleep debt in comparison to nurses working 8 or 12 hour shifts. Significant differences were not found between acute …

The Circle And The Cross: The Self-Destructive Nature Of Evil In Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene, Scott De Young Jan 2008

The Circle And The Cross: The Self-Destructive Nature Of Evil In Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene, Scott De Young

Masters Theses

The theme of good and evil is at the forefront of Edmund Spenser’s Faerie Queene'; can virtue survive and overcome vice? Because this theme is widely prevalent in The Faerie Queene, it is fittingly prevalent in the existing scholarship on The Faerie Queene. When commenting on the workings of evil in The Faerie Queene, most scholars tend to focus on either the historical or literary influences on Spenser’s evil characters, or they focus on the manner in which evil poses a threat to good. I am in no way arguing against these scholars. My contention, though, …

Highly photocatalytically active silver-modified ZnO has been prepared and the effect of silver modification was studied. The structural and optical properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform IR, differential scanning calorimetry, BET surface area, Raman, UV-vis, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity of these materials was studied by analyzing the degradation of an organic dye, rhodamine 6G (R6G), and it is found that 3 mol % silver-modified ZnO at 400°C shows approximately four times higher rate of degradation than that of unmodified ZnO and a three times higher rate than that of commercial TiO 2 photocatalyst Degussa P-25. It …

Feedback Control Of Macroscopic Crowd Dynamic Models, S. Wadoo, S. Al-Nasur, Pushkin Kachroo Jan 2008

Feedback Control Of Macroscopic Crowd Dynamic Models, S. Wadoo, S. Al-Nasur, Pushkin Kachroo

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

This paper presents design of nonlinear feedback controllers for two different macroscopic models for two- dimensional pedestrian dynamics. The models presented here are based on the laws of conservation of mass and momentum. These models have been developed by extending one-dimension macroscopic vehicle traffic flow models that use two-coupled partial deferential equations (PDEs). These models modify the vehicle traffic models so that bi-directional controlled flow is possible. Both models satisfy the conservation principle and are classified as nonlinear, time-dependent, hyperbolic PDE systems. The equations of motion in both cases are described by nonlinear partial differential equations. We address the feedback …

Pedestrian Dynamics: Feedback Control Of Crowd Evacuation, Pushkin Kachroo, S. Al-Nasur, S. Wadoo, Apoorva Shende

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

Effective evacuation of people from closed spaces is an extremely important topic, since it can save real lives in emergency situations that can be brought about by natural and human made disasters. Usually there are static maps posted at various places at buildings that illustrate routes that should be taken during emergencies. However, when disasters happen, some of these routes might not be valid because of structural problems due to the disaster itself and more importantly because of the distribution of congestion of people spread over the area. The average flow of traffic depends on the traffic density. Therefore, if …
