Economically Viable Strategy For Prevention Of Invasive Species Introduction: Case Study Of Otsego Lake, New York, Thomas Horvath Jan 2008

Economically Viable Strategy For Prevention Of Invasive Species Introduction: Case Study Of Otsego Lake, New York, Thomas Horvath

School of Natural Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The literature is full of examples detailing ecological impacts of invasive species and predictions of which and where species will invade next. Many fewer examples of effective prevention strategies are known. Prevention of aquatic invasive species (AIS) to inland lakes should be easily established because most AIS are initially introduced into watersheds by recreational boating activities, especially in North America. The Watershed Management Plan for Otsego Lake, a central New York glacial lake, provides for prevention of AIS via a stringent boat inspection and washing program (BIP). All boats entering Otsego Lake at the public launch are visually inspected and …

Evaluation Of Some Essential Element Levels In Thalassemia Major Patients In Mosul District, Iraq, Abdulmunaim H. Al-Samarrai, Mohaisen H. Adaay, Khudhair A. Al-Tikriti, Muayed M. Al-Anzy Jan 2008

Evaluation Of Some Essential Element Levels In Thalassemia Major Patients In Mosul District, Iraq, Abdulmunaim H. Al-Samarrai, Mohaisen H. Adaay, Khudhair A. Al-Tikriti, Muayed M. Al-Anzy

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the levels of some essential elements in thalassemic patients in Mosul, Iraq. METHODS: One hundred and five thalassemic blood transfusion dependent children, 2.5-18 years of age attending Ibn-Al-Atheer teaching hospital in Mosul City, Iraq, during 2005, were used in this study. Fifty-four healthy subjects served as a control group. Patients were allocated in a non-randomized prospective cross-sectional hospital based study. Essential elements levels were estimated. The mean, standard deviation, correlation coefficient, and z-test were used. P-values <0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Low serum zinc, and magnesium, and high serum copper, and potassium levels were found among the 105 thalassemic patients compared to the 54 controls. Levels of calcium, phosphate, and sodium were within normal limits. CONCLUSION: Fluctuations in the essential elements levels seem to be related to the different complications associated with the disease. Zinc deficiency may be attributed to hyperzincuria resulted from the release of Zn from hemolyzed red cells. Hypercupremia occurs in acute and chronic infections and hemochromatosis, which is a principal complication of thalassemia. Increased Na levels may be due to renal damage. Hypomagnesemia may occur due to hypoparathyroidism.

Saudi Medical Journal

The co-existence of breast carcinoma and lymphoma in the axillary lymph nodes, without a history of previous chemotherapy or radiotherapy is rarely described. We present a case of a 50-year-old female with right breast mass, proved by pathological examination to be invasive mucinous carcinoma. Examination of the axillary lymph nodes as axillary clearance showed concomitant small lymphocytic lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia, with no evidence of metastatic mammary carcinoma deposits.

Due Process For The Global Crime Era: A Proposal, Song Richardson Jan 2008

Due Process For The Global Crime Era: A Proposal, Song Richardson

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This article argues that the adjudication of transnational criminal cases in the United States raises troubling questions about the government's commitment to principled criminal process standards. Concern over global crime has resulted in a criminal process that inadequately protects fairness and legitimacy norms. Over 40 years ago, in his seminal work on the domestic criminal process, Herbert Packer described two models of criminal procedure: the crime control model and the due process model. The crime control model posits that the most important function of the criminal justice system is to suppress crime. The due process model focuses on the fallibility …

Life History, Abundance, And Distribution Of The Spotted Ratfish, Hydrolagus Colliei, Lewis Abraham Kamuela Barnett Jan 2008

Life History, Abundance, And Distribution Of The Spotted Ratfish, Hydrolagus Colliei, Lewis Abraham Kamuela Barnett

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Size at maturity, fecundity, reproductive periodicity, distribution, and abundance were estimated for the spotted ratfish, Hydrolagus colliei, off the coast of California, Oregon, and Washington (USA). Skeletal muscle concentrations of the steroid hormones testosterone (T) and estradiol (E2) predicted similar, but slightly smaller sizes at maturity than morphological criteria. Stage of maturity for males was estimated identically using internal organs or external secondary sexual characters, thus allowing non-lethal maturity assessments. Peak parturition occurred from May through October, with increased concentrations of E2 and progesterone (P4) in skeletal muscle of females correlating with ovarian recrudescence during November through February. Extrapolation of …

Yucca : Yikes! The Wrong Solution, Wrong Place, Wrong Time, Justin Carey Jan 2008

Yucca : Yikes! The Wrong Solution, Wrong Place, Wrong Time, Justin Carey

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This paper examines Yucca Mountain as the nation's first planned permanent repository for nuclear waste. In addition to analyzing the site itself, I also examine the possible ramifications that opening this mountain site may have on the nuclear power revival movement and renewable 'green' forms of energy. These issues were explored using historical, descriptive, comparative and qualitative methods. As a consequence of applying these methodologies I determined the Yucca site to be geologically unstable; transportation issues associated with nuclear waste are more problematic than first envisioned; the choice of this particular mountain site involves enviornmental racism of the worst kind; …

Maternity Leave Laws In The United States In The Light Of European Legislation, Candace Saari Kovacic-Fleischer Jan 2008

Maternity Leave Laws In The United States In The Light Of European Legislation, Candace Saari Kovacic-Fleischer

Contributions to Books

This chapter describes the difficulty that the US has had in passing social legislation by viewing it through the changing attitudes of US Supreme Court justices toward employment legislation during five defining eras in the twentieth century: laissez-faire economics and wage and hour legislation, 1905-1941; President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal Social Security Act, 1935-1937; World War II, 1940-1948; the Civil Rights and Women’s movements, 1963-1978; and the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993. The US has expanded its view of government’s role in the private workplace over time, though not nearly as quickly as has Europe. The author …

Dominance Of Virtual Delbrück Scattering For The Photon Emission By Nuclei In Relativistic Electron-Nucleus And Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions, Ilya F. Ginzburg, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Valery G. Serbo

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We consider the contribution of virtual Delbrück scattering to the photon emission by nuclei in the collision of two ultra-relativistic nuclei Z1 Z2 → Z1 Z2 γ and electron-nucleus collisions e Z → e Z γ, in the photon energy range m ≪ Eγ ≪ m γ, where m is the electron mass and γ is the Lorentz factor of the colliding nucleus. The discussed process has no infrared divergence. The total cross section is 50 barn for the Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC collider. The spectral distribution obtained is considerably larger than for ordinary …

Discipline, Security And Beyond: A Brief Introduction, Andrew Dilts Jan 2008

Discipline, Security And Beyond: A Brief Introduction, Andrew Dilts

Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works

Discipline and Punish shattered the way many of us thought about punishment and modern society and, for many years, served as one leading optic through which we analyzed penal practices and institutions. The book functioned as a quintessential work in critical theory: it lifted the veil from our eyes, it enlightened us, it fundamentally changed the way we understood contemporary punishment practices. Michel Foucault had shown the lie: we were not punishing less or in a more civilized manner, it turns out, we were punishing better. Our cherished enlightenment thinkers had not tamed punishment, they had perfected it—and this raised …
