Discipline, Security And Beyond: A Brief Introduction, Andrew Dilts Jan 2008

Discipline, Security And Beyond: A Brief Introduction, Andrew Dilts

Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works

Discipline and Punish shattered the way many of us thought about punishment and modern society and, for many years, served as one leading optic through which we analyzed penal practices and institutions. The book functioned as a quintessential work in critical theory: it lifted the veil from our eyes, it enlightened us, it fundamentally changed the way we understood contemporary punishment practices. Michel Foucault had shown the lie: we were not punishing less or in a more civilized manner, it turns out, we were punishing better. Our cherished enlightenment thinkers had not tamed punishment, they had perfected it—and this raised …

Michel Foucault Meets Gary Becker: Criminality Beyond Discipline And Punish, Andrew Dilts Jan 2008

Michel Foucault Meets Gary Becker: Criminality Beyond Discipline And Punish, Andrew Dilts

Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works

Among the numerous reasons why Discipline and Punish continues to be read and to shape the contours of criminology, sociology, political theory, and philosophy, is its attention to the development of criminal subjectivity. The ascendancy of the disciplinary age brought about the “fabrication” of the delinquent as a by-product of the discursive needs of the penitentiary technique and the requirements of the juridical law. The figure of the delinquent comes into existence both historically and theoretically at the intersection between discursive orders to manage the contradictions between them, providing a suitable subject for both the court and the penitentiary. The …

Live Interactive Group-Specific Normative Feedback Reduces Misperceptions And Drinking In College Students: A Randomized Cluster Trial, Joseph W. Labrie, Justin F. Hummer, Clayton Neighbors, Eric R. Pedersen Jan 2008

Live Interactive Group-Specific Normative Feedback Reduces Misperceptions And Drinking In College Students: A Randomized Cluster Trial, Joseph W. Labrie, Justin F. Hummer, Clayton Neighbors, Eric R. Pedersen

Heads Up!

This research evaluated the efficacy of a live and interactive group-specific normative feedback intervention designed to correct misperceptions of alcohol-related group norms and subsequently reduce drinking behavior. Campus organizations (N = 20) containing 1,162 college students were randomly assigned to intervention or assessment-only control conditions. Participants in the intervention condition attended an intervention during their organization’s regular standing meeting. Data were gathered in vivo using computerized handheld keypads into which participants entered personal responses to a series of alcohol-related questions assessing perceptions of normative group behavior as well as actual individual behavior. These data were then immediately presented in graphical …

Progesterone Receptors: Form And Function In Brain, Roberta Diaz Brinton, Richard F. Thompson, Michael R. Foy, Michel Baudry, Jun Ming Wang, Caleb E. Finch, Todd E. Morgan, Christian J. Pike, Wendy J. Mack, Frank Z. Stanczyk, Jon Nilsen Jan 2008

Psychological Science Faculty Works

Emerging data indicate that progesterone has multiple non-reproductive functions in the central nervous system to regulate cognition, mood, inflammation, mitochondrial function, neurogenesis and regeneration, myelination and recovery from traumatic brain injury. Progesterone-regulated neural responses are mediated by an array of progesterone receptors (PR) that include the classic nuclear PRA and PRB receptors and splice variants of each, the seven transmembrane domain 7TMPRβ and the membrane-associated 25-Dx PR (PGRMC1). These PRs induce classic regulation of gene expression while also transducing signaling cascades that originate at the cell membrane and ultimately activate transcription factors. Remarkably, PRs are broadly expressed throughout the brain …

Progesterone Regulation Of Synaptic Transmission And Plasticity In Rodent Hippocampus, Michael R. Foy, Garnik Akopian, Richard F. Thompson Jan 2008

Progesterone Regulation Of Synaptic Transmission And Plasticity In Rodent Hippocampus, Michael R. Foy, Garnik Akopian, Richard F. Thompson

Psychological Science Faculty Works

Ovarian hormones influence memory formation by eliciting changes in neural activity. The effects of various concentrations of progesterone (P4) on synaptic transmission and plasticity associated with long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD) were studied using in vitro hippocampal slices. Extracellular studies show that the highest concentration of P4 tested (10−6 M) decreased the baseline synaptic transmission and magnitude of LTP, but did not affect LTD. Intracellular studies suggest the P4 effect to be mediated, at least in part, by GABAA activity. These results establish a general effect of P4 on synaptic transmission, multiple forms of synaptic plasticity, and …

Because of the multifactorial nature of neuropsychological tests, attention remains poorly defined from a neuropsychological perspective, and conclusions made regarding attention across studies may be limited due to the different nature of the measures used. Thus, a more definitive schema for this neurocognitive domain is needed. We assessed the applicability of Mirsky and Duncan's (2001) neuropsychological model of attention to a cohort of 104 HIV+ adults. Our analysis resulted in a five-factor structure similar to that of previous studies, which explained 74.5% of the variance. However, based on the psychometric characteristics of the measures comprising each factor, we offer an …

The Biot-Savart Law: From Infinitesimal To Infinite, Jeffrey A. Phillips, Jeff Sanny

Physics Faculty Works

In this paper, we discuss a simple apparatus and accompanying class activity that we have developed to illustrate the Biot-Savart law. Since students in introductory electricity and magnetism courses often find this law a mathematical mystery, we feel that a simple experiment such as this will provide the students a better understanding of the concepts introduced. By collecting data from several finite segment lengths, students are able to infer the 1/r2 distance dependence of the magnetic field for infinitesimal segments and the 1/r dependence for infinite wires.

This project examined the communication and overall education programs of 36 students with Angelman Syndrome (AS) whom are being educated in both inclusive and segregated classrooms. The purposes of the this study are to: (1) compile a list of best practices regarding the communication and educational instruction of children with Angelman Syndrome and more generally, children with significant disabilities, (2) to validate these practices with an expert panel, and (3) to socially validate these practices with the subjects' parents. An exhaustive review of the current literature in the areas of inclusive education, Angelman Syndrome Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), and …

Measuring The Elf Response Of An Acupuncture Meridian Compared To A Control Channel, Keith Spaulding Jan 2008

Measuring The Elf Response Of An Acupuncture Meridian Compared To A Control Channel, Keith Spaulding

Master's Theses and Capstones

Acupuncture meridians are said to possess unique electrical characteristics; a characteristic of interest when analyzing systems is frequency response. The Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) response of the Large Intestine (LI) meridian was found by applying a Gaussian pulse signal to LI4 and detecting the signal at LI11; a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis is performed on this signal with a Power Spectral Density (PSD) measuring total power in the 2 -- 100 Hz region. This total power is compared to the total power measurement at a control point by applying the same Gaussian pulse on a control channel; this protocol …

A Late Glacial And Holocene Chronology Of The Castner Glacier, Delta River Valley, Alaska, Michael W. Howley Jan 2008

A Late Glacial And Holocene Chronology Of The Castner Glacier, Delta River Valley, Alaska, Michael W. Howley

Master's Theses and Capstones

New field mapping of surficial deposits near the Castner Glacier, Alaska has identified three distinct moraine complexes beyond the current glacier margin, denoting at least three separate intervals of glacial advance or stillstand. The timing of moraine stabilization and ice retreat was determined by cosmogenic 10Be surface exposure dating for the two older moraines along with lichenometric measurements for all three moraines. Surface exposure ages indicate the timing of ice retreat after the late Wisconsin maximum at 14.7 +/- 0.7 ka (n = 4, k-years before present), and identify the intermediate moraine as corresponding to the Little Ice Age (LIA) …

Structural Testing Of The New England Precast Concrete Bridge Rail, Patrick William Santoso Jan 2008

Structural Testing Of The New England Precast Concrete Bridge Rail, Patrick William Santoso

Master's Theses and Capstones

The need for a modular architectural precast concrete bridge guardrail to be used as an alternative to traditional non-aesthetic bridge guardrails has been expressed by New England communities. Because FHWA requirements allow modifications of existing crash tested bridge rails to be put into service without additional crash testing the New England Precast Guardrail has been developed from the Texas T411 crash tested bridge rail. Two 30&inches; rails with eight 1&inches; diameter stainless steel anchor bolts were cast and successfully static load tested. At the request of Massachusetts Highway Department the rail height was increased to 40&inches; and retested. Static load …

Paleomagnetism Of Eocene Volcanic Tuffs From Laramide Foreland Basins: Implications For The Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale, Kaori Tsukui

Master's Theses and Capstones

Volcanic tuff samples were collected from twenty-nine tuff horizons in Laramide foreland basins and measured for their paleomagnetism. The results were combined with high precision radiometric ages of the same tuffs to evaluate eight competing calibration models for the Eocene part of the Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale (GPTS) by comparing the measured polarity to that predicted by each age model. Of the eight models, the New Willwood model is tentatively favored and recommended as the best alternative yet available to the current GPTS calibration. It not only removes an ongoing chronostratigraphic discrepancy in the Greater Green River Basin, but also …

Carbonyl Sulfide (Ocs): Large Scale Distributions Over North America During Intex-Na And Relationship To Co2, Lambert Doezema Jan 2008

Carbonyl Sulfide (Ocs): Large Scale Distributions Over North America During Intex-Na And Relationship To Co2, Lambert Doezema

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Works

An extensive set of carbonyl sulfide (OCS) observations were made as part of the NASA Intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment-North America (INTEX-NA) study, flown from 1 July to 14 August 2004 mostly over the eastern United States and Canada. These data show that summertime OCS mixing ratios at low altitude were dominated by surface drawdown and were highly correlated with CO2. Although local plumes were observed on some low-altitude flight legs, anthropogenic OCS sources were small compared to this sink. These INTEX-NA observations were in marked contrast to the early springtime 2001 Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific experiment, which …

Should I Stay Or Should I Go? Eukaryotic Translation Initiation Factors 1 And 1a Control Start Codon Recognition, Sarah F. Mitchell Jan 2008

Should I Stay Or Should I Go? Eukaryotic Translation Initiation Factors 1 And 1a Control Start Codon Recognition, Sarah F. Mitchell

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Works

Start codon selection is a key step in translation initiation as it sets the reading frame for decoding. Two eukaryotic initiation factors, eIF1 and eIF1A, are key actors in this process. Recent work has elucidated many details of the mechanisms these factors use to control start site selection. eIF1 prevents the irreversible GTP hydrolysis that commits the ribosome to initiation at a particular codon. eIF1A both promotes and inhibits commitment through the competing influences of its two unstructured termini. Both factors perform their tasks through a variety of interactions with other components of the initiation machinery, in many cases mediated …

Weight Systems For Milnor Invariants, Blake Mellor Jan 2008

Weight Systems For Milnor Invariants, Blake Mellor

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We use Polyak's skein relation to give a new proof that Milnor's string link homotopy invariants are finite type invariants, and to develop a recursive relation for their associated weight systems. We show that the obstruction to the triviality of these weight systems is the presence of a certain kind of spanning tree in the intersection graph of a chord diagram.

Musical Actions Of Dihedral Groups, Alissa S. Crans, Thomas M. Fiore, Ramon Satyendra Jan 2008

Musical Actions Of Dihedral Groups, Alissa S. Crans, Thomas M. Fiore, Ramon Satyendra

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

The sequence of pitches which form a musical melody can be transposed or inverted. Since the 1970s, music theorists have modeled musical transposition and inversion in terms of an action of the dihedral group of order 24. More recently music theorists have found an intriguing second way that the dihedral group of order 24 acts on the set of major and minor chords. We illustrate both geometrically and algebraically how these two actions are {\it dual}. Both actions and their duality have been used to analyze works of music as diverse as Hindemith and the Beatles.

Value Monoids Of Zero-Dimensional Valuations Of Rank 1, Edward Mosteig Jan 2008

Value Monoids Of Zero-Dimensional Valuations Of Rank 1, Edward Mosteig

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

Classically, Grobner bases are computed by first prescribing a set monomial order. Moss Sweedler suggested an alternative and developed a framework to perform such computations by using valuation rings in place of monomial orders. We build on these ideas by providing a class of valuations on k(x, y) that are suitable for this framework. For these valuations, we compute ν(k[x, y] ∗ ) and use this to perform computations concerning ideals in the polynomial ring k[x, y]. Interestingly, for these valuations, some ideals have a finite Grobner basis with respect to the valuation that is not …

Cohomology Of Categorical Self-Distributivity, J. Scott Carter, Alissa S. Crans, Mohamed Elhamdadi, Masahico Saito Jan 2008

Cohomology Of Categorical Self-Distributivity, J. Scott Carter, Alissa S. Crans, Mohamed Elhamdadi, Masahico Saito

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We define self-distributive structures in the categories of coalgebras and cocommutative coalgebras. We obtain examples from vector spaces whose bases are the elements of finite quandles, the direct sum of a Lie algebra with its ground field, and Hopf algebras. The self-distributive operations of these structures provide solutions of the Yang–Baxter equation, and, conversely, solutions of the Yang–Baxter equation can be used to construct self-distributive operations in certain categories. Moreover, we present a cohomology theory that encompasses both Lie algebra and quandle cohomologies, is analogous to Hochschild cohomology, and can be used to study deformations of these self-distributive structures. All …

Four Varieties Of Character-Based Virtue Epistemology, Jason Baehr Jan 2008

Four Varieties Of Character-Based Virtue Epistemology, Jason Baehr

Philosophy Faculty Works

The terrain of character-based or “responsibilist” virtue epistemology has evolved dramatically over the last decade — so much so that it is far from clear what, if anything, unifies the various views put forth in this area. In an attempt to bring some clarity to the overall thrust and structure of this movement, I develop a fourfold classification of character-based virtue epistemologies. I also offer a qualified assessment of each approach, defending a certain account of the probable future of this burgeoning subfield.
