Walter Russell Mead: Power, Terror, Peace, And War For No. 149, Steven Alan Samson

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Walter Russell Mead places this volume (which builds on Special Providence) into the context of the ideological and theological debates that have shaped American history. Like Michael Oakeshott and various conservatives, Mead depicts the contemporary world as the outworking of a “modern temper” or an “Enlightenment project,” two phases of which he focuses on: Fordism (resembling Lewis Mumford’s modern megamachine) and millennial capitalism. Mead’s identification of several competing schools of thought or dispositions in chapter six is somewhat comparable to earlier “models of historical interpretation,” such as Daniel Elazar’s three American “political cultures” and David Hackett Fischer’s four “British folkways” …

Political Contestation In Global Production Networks, David Levy Jan 2008

Political Contestation In Global Production Networks, David Levy

Management and Marketing Faculty Publication Series

This paper develops a critical framework on international management and production that draws from the literatures on global commodity chains and global production networks (GPNs), from institutional entrepreneurship, as well as from neo-Gramscian theory in international political economy. The framework views GPNs as integrated economic, political, and discursive systems, in which market and political power are intertwined. The framework highlights the contingent stability of GPNs as well as the potential for actors to engage politically in contestation and collaboration over system governance and the distribution of benefits. The framework offers a multidimensional and multi-level approach to understanding power relations, ideology, …

Achieving Policymaking Consensus: The (Unfortunate) Waning Of Negotiated Rulemaking, Jeffrey Lubbers Jan 2008

Achieving Policymaking Consensus: The (Unfortunate) Waning Of Negotiated Rulemaking, Jeffrey Lubbers

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Introduction: As the ADR movement made its way from the courts to the agency hearing rooms in the 1980s, negotiated rulemaking (sometimes called "regulatory negotiation" or simply "reg-neg") also emerged on a parallel track as an alternative to traditional procedures for drafting proposed regulations. This exemplar of regulatory reform was based on two insights: (1) that the usual process of written notice-and-comment rulemaking has an intrinsic weakness because stakeholders engaged in it do not interact with each other or with the agency; and (2) in certain situations, it is possible to bring together representatives of the agency and the various …

O.J., Batson And Snyder: Lessons From An Intersecting Trilogy, Camille Nelson Jan 2008

O.J., Batson And Snyder: Lessons From An Intersecting Trilogy, Camille Nelson

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

INTRODUCTION There are few cases that inform our collective understanding of the American jury system more than Batson v. Kentucky. This case serves as a touchstone in Equal Protection jurisprudence and can be viewed as "the [U.S. Supreme Court's] most ambitious attempt to impose meaningful prohibitions on the use of race-based peremptory challenges." This case and its progeny provide a framework for the protection of the Fourteenth Amendment's Equal Protection Clause and also implicate the Sixth Amendment's jury-trial guarantees. The Batson holding has been expanded to guard not only against the wrongful exclusion of jurors based upon race, but also …

The Role Of Interagency Collaboration For Substance- Abusing Families Involved With Child Welfare, Beth L. Green, Anna Rockhill, Scott Burns

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Meeting the needs of families involved with the child welfare system because of a substance abuse issue remains a challenge for child welfare practitioners. In order to improve services to these families, there has been an increasing focus on improving collaboration between child welfare, treatment providers, and the court systems. This paper presents the results from qualitative interviews with 104 representatives of these three systems that explore how the collaborative process works to benefit families, as well as the barriers and supports for building successful collaborations. Results indicate that collaboration has at least three major functions: building shared value systems, …

A Series Of Trainings For Paraprofessionals : Instructional Strategies For Supporting Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Alison M. Hoff

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The purpose of this thesis project was to evaluate the effectiveness of research-based instructional strategies to determine what materials, in the areas of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), should be included in a training series for paraprofessionals working with students with ASD. Four training modules were created in the areas of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Applied Behavior Analysis: 1) background information on ASD and ABA, 2) antecedent instructional …
