Impacts Of Express Bus Service On Passenger Demand, Jeffrey M. Casello, Bruce Hellinga Dec 2008

Impacts Of Express Bus Service On Passenger Demand, Jeffrey M. Casello, Bruce Hellinga

Journal of Public Transportation

The Region of Waterloo, Ontario, is a rapidly-growing metropolitan area approximately 100 km west of Toronto. In 2005, the Region’s transit operator, Grand River Transit, introduced an express bus service, known as iXpress, along the central northsouth corridor of the Region. This paper explores the impact of the iXpress service on transit user costs and passenger attraction. We employ a methodology to quantify the generalized cost (including waiting time, in-vehicle and transfer times) of transit trips between key destinations in the Region before and after the implementation of iXpress. We also develop a methodology to identify those customers who benefit …

Users’ Perceptive Evaluation Of Bus Arrival Time Deviations In Stochastic Networks, Nikolaos G. Daskalakis, Anthony Stathopoulos Dec 2008

Users’ Perceptive Evaluation Of Bus Arrival Time Deviations In Stochastic Networks, Nikolaos G. Daskalakis, Anthony Stathopoulos

Journal of Public Transportation

This work is a report on research concerning transit service characteristics as seen from the users’ point of view. Users of two separate bus lines, operating in a shared/ common urban infrastructure, were interviewed at bus stops about their perception concerning headways of bus lines operation. An analysis was made regarding deviations between actual and scheduled bus arrival headway. Further statistical analysis was carried out to check factors giving rise to different perceptions. The operation of each bus line was registered, and corresponding service characteristics were compared with those perceived by the users. Based on these results, a model for …

Impact Of High Occupancy Vehicle (Hov) Lane Incentives For Hybrids In Virginia, David Diamond Dec 2008

Impact Of High Occupancy Vehicle (Hov) Lane Incentives For Hybrids In Virginia, David Diamond

Journal of Public Transportation

This paper examines the impact of Virginia’s policy of exempting hybrid-electric vehicles from minimum occupancy requirements on state HOV lanes. Virginia registration statistics are used to compile hybrid market shares on a county level to compare the impact of HOV lane access to other socioeconomic variables. The HOV incentive is shown to have a significant impact in Northern Virginia, but not in the Hampton Roads area. The paper also addresses the criticisms and potential unintended consequences of the incentive policy, including whether it has impacted the “green” image of the hybrid in Virginia.

Operations-Oriented Performance Measures For Freeway Management Systems: Final Report, Robert E. Brydia, Stephen P. Mattingly, Melanie L. Sattler, Auttawit Upayokin

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

This report describes the second and final year activities of the project titled “Using Operations-Oriented Performance Measures to Support Freeway Management Systems.” Work activities included developing a prototype system architecture for testing the use of performance measures in real-time. Outputs from this effort included operator’s screens, a prototype database, and a concept of operations for using the real-time measures. Additional work showcased the application of a multi-criterion screening approach to the selection of competing performance measures.

Studies Of The Performance, Stability And Reliability Of Various Configurations Of The Activated Sludge Process At Full-Scale Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants, Michael A. Redda Dec 2008

Studies Of The Performance, Stability And Reliability Of Various Configurations Of The Activated Sludge Process At Full-Scale Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants, Michael A. Redda

Earth & Environmental Sciences Dissertations - Archive

This research presents a performance, stability and reliability analysis of five configurations of activated sludge process, viz., conventional, contact stabilization, complete mix, extended aeration and sequencing batch reactor. Five years effluent records of carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand (CBOD5), total suspended solids (TSS) and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) were used. The impact of hydraulic load classes (HLCes) and seasons on the performance of configurations were also examined. The Univariate General Linear Model with Tukey's Honestly Significant Difference was employed in the performance and stability studies. Performance was determined based on the observed lowest mean effluent concentrations, while the observed standard deviation from …

Capt. John Pope’S Collection Of Birds From Indianola, Stanley D. Casto Dec 2008

Capt. John Pope’S Collection Of Birds From Indianola, Stanley D. Casto

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

The specimens taken at Indianola, Texas, by Capt. John Pope during February and March 1855 represent the first collection of birds from this location on the Texas coast. Pope’s “Book of Descriptions” of the Indianola specimens is discussed along with the identities of the birds collected. Specimens of the Greater Scaup, Purple Martin, King Rail, Yellow-rumped Warbler, and American Golden-Plover from Indianola were the first of their species from Texas to be deposited at the Smithsonian Institution.

Project Prairie Birds: A Citizen Science Project For Wintering Grassland Birds, Susan A. Heath, Clifford E. Shackelford, Cecilia M. Riley

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

Coastal prairies are the primary winter destination for two dozen species of migratory grassland birds and losses of this habitat have proven detrimental to their populations. As a result, some of Partners in Flight’s (PIF) highest priority birds are grassland species. To examine grassland bird use of coastal prairies, Project Prairie Birds survey methodology was designed and field work was initiated in 1998. Avian surveys were conducted at 34 sites, each with multiple transects for a minimum of two years by all-volunteer, three-person crews identifying all species flushed from vegetation. Seasonal vegetation surveys measured five variables using five one square-meter …

Use Of Artificial Burrows By Western Burrowing Owls And Other Vertebrates During Winter In Southern Texas, Jennifer L. Keppers, Mary Kay Skoruppa, Marc C. Woodin, Graham C. Hickman Dec 2008

Use Of Artificial Burrows By Western Burrowing Owls And Other Vertebrates During Winter In Southern Texas, Jennifer L. Keppers, Mary Kay Skoruppa, Marc C. Woodin, Graham C. Hickman

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

Burrows are an integral part of the natural history of the Western Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia hypugaea), however, mammal burrows are uncommon in southern Texas where the Burrowing Owl overwinters. Seventy-two artificial burrows of 2.4 m length were monitored regularly for Burrowing Owl and other vertebrate use over two non-breeding seasons (October through March, 2001 to 2003). Six types of burrows, differing in diameter (15, 20, or 25 cm) and number of openings (two or three), were monitored. Small-diameter (15 cm) burrows accounted for 79% of all Burrowing Owl use. Burrowing Owl use of artificial burrows was not related to …

Closing The Gap: Education Requirements Of The 21st Century Production Workforce, Kyle B. Stone, Karen Kaminski, Gene Gloeckner Dec 2008

Closing The Gap: Education Requirements Of The 21st Century Production Workforce, Kyle B. Stone, Karen Kaminski, Gene Gloeckner

Journal of STEM Teacher Education

Due to the large number of individuals retiring over the next ten years a critical shortage of people available to work within the manufacturing industry is looming (Dychtwald, Erickson, & Morison, 2006). This shortage is exacerbated by the lack of a properly educated workforce that meets the demands of the 21st century manufacturer (Judy & D’Amico, 1997). Combine these two issues and the result is a steady reduction in qualified candidates for the millions of jobs available in the manufacturing industry. The purpose of this research was to identify if a knowledge gap exists between the manufacturing industry and the …
