Role For The Recbcd Recombination Pathway For Pile Gene Variation In Repair-Proficient Neisseria Gonorrhoeae, Rachel K. Baker
Role For The Recbcd Recombination Pathway For Pile Gene Variation In Repair-Proficient Neisseria Gonorrhoeae, Rachel K. Baker
Honors Capstones
The role of the RecBCD recombination pathway in PilE variation in Neisseria gonorrhoeae is debatable and dependent on the strain studied. In the MSI 1 strain, recB mutants were assessed for recombination/repair by assessing their ability to repair double-chain breaks. The MSI 1 recB mutants were found to be highly susceptible to these DNA double-chain break treatments and were severely impaired for growth; recB growth suppressor mutants arose at high frequencies. When the recombination/repair capacity of MSI 1 were compared to other strains (FA1090 and P9), innate difference were observed between each as FA1090 and P9 rec bacteria had pronounced …

Lecturers’ Self Perception Of Change In Their Teaching Approaches: Reflections On A Qualitative Study, Roisin Donnelly
Journal Articles
Within the realm of teaching in higher education (HE), in this new millennium, there is currently no professional training requirement for teachers in Ireland; as a result the majority of teachers in Irish higher education do not have any teaching qualifications, and essentially are required to learn on the job, oftentimes relying on how they were taught themselves. However, there is growing recognition within the sector for the need for training for lecturers and other academic staff who have a teaching component to their work.

Interaction Of Gramicidin S And Its Aromatic Amino-Acid Analog With Phospholipid Membranes, Masoud Jelokhani-Niaraki, Robert S. Hodges, Joseph E. Meissner, Una E. Hassenstein, Laura Wheaton
Chemistry Faculty Publications
To investigate the mechanism of interaction of gramicidin S-like antimicrobial peptides with biological membranes, a series of five decameric cyclic cationic β-sheet-β-turn peptides with all possible combinations of aromatic D-amino acids, Cyclo(Val-Lys-Leu-D-Ar1-Pro-Val-Lys-Leu-D-Ar2-Pro) (Ar ≡ Phe, Tyr, Trp), were synthesized. Conformations of these cyclic peptides were comparable in aqueous solutions and lipid vesicles. Isothermal titration calorimetry measurements revealed entropy-driven binding of cyclic peptides to POPC and POPE/POPG lipid vesicles. Binding of peptides to both vesicle systems was endothermic—exceptions were peptides containing the Trp-Trp and Tyr-Trp pairs with exothermic binding to POPC vesicles. Application of one- and two-site …

Tax Policy As A Lifeline: Encouraging Blood And Organ Donation Through Tax Credits, Joseph B. Clamon
Tax Policy As A Lifeline: Encouraging Blood And Organ Donation Through Tax Credits, Joseph B. Clamon
Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences
This article, the second concerning the organ donation crisis, proposes the use of tax policy to encourage blood and organ donation. After critiquing the ethical and logistical problems posed by other commercial and non-commercial solutions, the author demonstrates how tax credits can be used as an effective and ethical solution to address the shortage of donors. The author also offers two model statutes that provide guidance as to how a nonrefundable tax credit for blood and organ donation might operate in the tax code.
