"Body Property": Challenging The Ethical Barriers In Organ Transplantation To Protect Individual Autonomy, Charles C. Dunham Iv Jan 2008

"Body Property": Challenging The Ethical Barriers In Organ Transplantation To Protect Individual Autonomy, Charles C. Dunham Iv

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

One of two articles related to the current organ shortage, this article advocates the need for legislation to recognize organs and tissues separated from the body as a distinct category of personal property. After addressing the legislative history of organ procurement and psychological barriers to donor consent, the article examines the importance of separating the lifetime rights of ownership in our own bodies from postmortem rights. Ultimately, the author proposes a futures market approach to this problem in which individuals before death, or surviving family members after death, are permitted sell the decedent's organs in a private contract.

Immigrant Access To Health Care And Public Health: An International Perspective, Sana Loue Jan 2008

Immigrant Access To Health Care And Public Health: An International Perspective, Sana Loue

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

This article considers the extent of international migration and associated concerns for the public health and advocates for an international perspective on the provision of health care to migrants. After discussing factors affecting the health of immigrants and exploring the role of public health, this article focuses on immigrant access to health care and specifically addresses the relationships between legal status, financial resources for health care, and access to care from such an international perspective. The author concludes that the failure to address immigrant health care in this larger international context ultimately impacts not only the individual immigrants, but their …

Compressive Properties Of Trabecular Bone In The Distal Femur, Travis A. Burgers, Jim Mason, Glen Niebur, Heidi L. Ploeg Jan 2008

Compressive Properties Of Trabecular Bone In The Distal Femur, Travis A. Burgers, Jim Mason, Glen Niebur, Heidi L. Ploeg

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Early loosening and implant migration are two problems that lead to failures in cementless (press-fit) femoral knee components of total knee replacements. To begin to address these early failures, this study determined the anterior–posterior mechanical properties from four locations in the human distal femur. Thirty-three cylindrical specimens were removed perpendicular to the press-fit surface after the surgical cuts on 10 human cadaveric femurs (age 71.5 ± 14.2 years) had been made. Compression testing was performed that utilized methods to reduce the effects of end-artifacts. The bone mineral apparent density (BMAD), apparent modulus of elasticity, yield and ultimate stress, and yield …

Bioethical Education In The Local Church, Will E. Honeycutt Jan 2008

Bioethical Education In The Local Church, Will E. Honeycutt

Faculty Dissertations

In light of the challenges of new biotechnologies, the church must reassert its commitment to the concept of the sanctity of human life created in the image of God. One way to do this is for the local church to develop a strategy for educating its congregants in bioethics. This educational task begins with an awareness of what bioethics involves, what issues are bioethical in nature, and a demonstration of their urgency.

In chapter one, I propose to introduce the challenge of bioethics facing the church, explain why I am passionate about this topic and introduce some of the works …

An Analytical Framework For Studying The Politics Of Consumption: The Case Of The National Consumers' League, Wendy A. Wiedenhoft Murphy Jan 2008

An Analytical Framework For Studying The Politics Of Consumption: The Case Of The National Consumers' League, Wendy A. Wiedenhoft Murphy

Sociology

Consumption is not often addressed in the literature on social movements even though consumer organizations and consumer tactics have been successful in achieving social change. This paper offers an analytical framework for studying the politics of consumption, which suggests that consumers can be conceived of collectively as active agents rather than passive individuals. I capture this active agency through four concepts: mobilization, problematization, identification, and contention. I focus on one consumer organization, the National Consumers' League, and its three consumer tactics, white lists, white labels, and legislation, in order to demonstrate how the analytical framework I construct can be applied.

No significant difference in students' immediate learning performance was found as measured by the content-related immediate posttest; however, …

An Analysis Of Faculty Perspectives On The Theory And Practice Of Academic Freedom, Robin R. West Jan 2008

An Analysis Of Faculty Perspectives On The Theory And Practice Of Academic Freedom, Robin R. West

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Academic freedom is a concept said to be poorly defined and misunderstood. Much of the literature on academic freedom suggests that the presumed professorial right is threatened by a variety of internal and external forces. This study examines the theory and practice of academic freedom within the context of instruction in the university classroom. The study attempts to determine if there is a difference between faculty perspectives about the theoretical constructs of academic freedom and its praxis in instructional practice. In other words, "this is what I believe academic freedom is and does, but here is what I have experienced." …

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The sporadic nature of Alzheimer's disease (AD) argues for an environmental link that may drive AD pathogenesis; however, the triggering factors and the period of their action are unknown. Recent studies in rodents have shown that exposure to lead (Pb) during brain development predetermined the expression and regulation of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) and its amyloidogenic β-amyloid (Aβ) product in old age. Here, we report that the expression of AD-related genes [APP, BACE1 (β-site APP cleaving enzyme 1)] as well as their transcriptional regulator (Sp1) were elevated in aged (23-year-old) monkeys exposed to Pb as infants. Furthermore, developmental exposure …

Liver Receptor Homolog 1 Transcriptionally Regulates Human Bile Salt Export Pump Expression, Xiulong Song, Rajani Kaimal, Bingfang Yan, Ruitang Deng Jan 2008

Liver Receptor Homolog 1 Transcriptionally Regulates Human Bile Salt Export Pump Expression, Xiulong Song, Rajani Kaimal, Bingfang Yan, Ruitang Deng

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The metabolic conversion of cholesterol into bile acids in liver is initiated by the rate-limiting cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase (CYP7A1), whereas the bile salt export pump (BSEP) is responsible for the canalicular secretion of bile acids. Liver receptor homolog 1 (LRH-1) is a key transcriptional factor required for the hepatic expression of CYP7A1. We hypothesized that LRH-1 was also involved in the transcriptional regulation of BSEP. In support of our hypothesis, we found that overexpression of LRH-1 induced, whereas knockdown of LRH-1 decreased, BSEP expression. Consistent with its role in transcriptional regulation, LRH-1 dose-dependently transactivated the BSEP promoter. In addition, such transactivation …

Bottom Habitat Mapping Using Towed Underwater Videography: Subtidal Oyster Reefs As An Example Application, Raymond E. Grizzle, Melissa A. Brodeur, Holly A. Abeels, Jennifer K. Greene

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

Towed underwater video has become a widely used method for bottom habitat mapping in coastal waters, but very little has been published on this relatively new and effective approach. We use a case study on two oyster reefs to illustrate the pros and cons of towed video, visualization techniques, and future research topics. Towed video is deployed in similar fashion to single-beam sonars, yielding narrow swaths of video imagery that are recorded concurrently with global positioning system (GPS) data for georeferencing. The major advantages over acoustic (sonar) methods are that image processing and interpretation are relatively simple, and there is …

Separate Loci Underlie Resistance To Root Infection And Leaf Scorch During Soybean Sudden Death Syndrome, Samreen Kazi, Jeffry Shultz, Jawad Afzal, J. Johnson, V. N. Njiti, David A. Lightfoot

Articles

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cultivars show differences in their resistance to both the leaf scorch and root rot of sudden death syndrome (SDS). The syndrome is caused by root colonization by Fusarium virguliforme (ex. F. solani f. sp. glycines). Root susceptibility combined with reduced leaf scorch resistance has been associated with resistance to Heterodera glycines HG Type 1.3.6.7 (race 14) of the soybean cyst nematode (SCN). In contrast, the rhg1 locus underlying resistance to Hg Type 0 was found clustered with three loci for resistance to SDS leaf scorch and one for root infection. The aims of this study …

In Silico Comparison Of Transcript Abundances During Arabidopsis Thaliana And Glycine Max Resistance To Fusarium Virguliforme, Jiazheng Yuan, Mengxia Zhu, David A. Lightfoot, M Javed Iqbal, Jack Y. Yang, Khalid Meksem

Articles

Background
Sudden death syndrome (SDS) of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) is an economically important disease, caused by the semi-biotrophic fungus Fusarium solani f. sp. glycines, recently renamed Fusarium virguliforme (Fv). Due to the complexity and length of the soybean-Fusarium interaction, the molecular mechanisms underlying plant resistance and susceptibility to the pathogen are not fully understood. F. virguliforme has a very wide host range for the ability to cause root rot and a very narrow host range for the ability to cause a leaf scorch. Arabidopsis thaliana is a host for many types of phytopathogens including bacteria, fungi, viruses and …
