Land Use/Cover Change Using Remote Sensing And Geographic Information Systems : Pic Macaya National Park, Haiti, Jessie A. Vital Jan 2008

Land Use/Cover Change Using Remote Sensing And Geographic Information Systems : Pic Macaya National Park, Haiti, Jessie A. Vital

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

A post classification change detection technique based on a hybrid classification approach (unsupervised and supervised) was applied to Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), Landsat Enhanced Thematic Plus (ETM+), and ASTER images acquired in 1987, 2000 and 2004 respectively to map land use/cover changes in the Pic Macaya National Park in the southern region of Haiti. Each image was classified individually into six land use/cover classes: built-up, agriculture, herbaceous, open pine forest, mixed forest, and barren land using unsupervised ISODATA and maximum likelihood supervised classifiers with the aid of field collected ground truth data collected in the field. Ground truth information, collected …

Quantum Dot / Optical Protein Bio-Nano Hybrid System Biosensing, Mark H. Griep Jan 2008

Quantum Dot / Optical Protein Bio-Nano Hybrid System Biosensing, Mark H. Griep

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The integration of novel nanomaterials with highly-functional biological molecules has advanced multiple fields including electronics, sensing, imaging, and energy harvesting. This work focuses on the creation of a new type of bio-nano hybrid substrate for military biosensing applications. Specifically it is shown that the nano-scale interactions of the optical protein bacteriorhodopsin and colloidal semiconductor quantum dots can be utilized as a generic sensing substrate.

This work spans from the basic creation of the protein to its application in a novel biosensing system. The functionality of this sensor design originates from the unique interactions between the quantum dot and bacteriorhodopsin molecule …

Institutional Alliances And Derivative Legitimacy, Claire R. Kelly Jan 2008

Institutional Alliances And Derivative Legitimacy, Claire R. Kelly

Michigan Journal of International Law

Part I of this Article describes global lawmaking and the legitimacy challenge. It provides a typology of IOs that develop norms. It explains that legitimacy is a subjective belief, but it provides objective paradigms for assessing legitimacy claims. It demonstrates how pursuing legitimacy according to one set of criteria can sacrifice legitimacy claims under another. It also examines the competition among IOs, the push for democratic norms, and the resulting need for stronger legitimacy claims. Part II explains linkage and accommodation and gives specific examples of where these phenomena work to garner more legitimacy for specific organizations and the soft …
