Effects Of Neonatal Handling On Play Behavior And Fear Towards A Predator Odor In Juvenile Rats, Stephen M. Siviy
Effects Of Neonatal Handling On Play Behavior And Fear Towards A Predator Odor In Juvenile Rats, Stephen M. Siviy
Psychology Faculty Publications
The effects of brief daily separation, also known as "handling," during the first 2 weeks of life on play behavior and fearfulness toward a predatory odor were assessed in juvenile rats. Handled rats were more playful than nonhandled control rats, and while handling had no effect on the direct response of these rats toward a predatory odor, handled rats did not exhibit a conditioned suppression of play when tested later in the same context where they had been exposed to the predatory odor. Handled rats were still wary of the environment in that they continued to show a heightened level …

In Vivo Yy1 Knockdown Effects On Genomic Imprinting, Joomyeong Kim, Jeong Do Kim
In Vivo Yy1 Knockdown Effects On Genomic Imprinting, Joomyeong Kim, Jeong Do Kim
Faculty Publications
The YY1 transcription factor is predicted to control several imprinted domains, including the Peg3, Gnas and Xist/Tsix regions. To test this possibility, we have used RNA interference strategies to generate transgenic mouse lines that express reduced levels of the cellular YY1 protein. As predicted, lowering YY1 levels resulted in global expression changes in these three imprinted domains. In neonatal brains, most imprinted genes of the Peg3 domain were up-regulated. In the Gnas domain, Nespas was down-regulated, whereas three other imprinted transcripts were up-regulated, including Nesp, Gnasxl and Exon1A. In the Xist/Tsix domain, no obvious change was detected in the expression …
Interactions Between Bacterial Carbon Monoxide And Hydrogen Consumption And Plant Development On Recent Volcanic Deposits, Gary M. King, Carolyn F. Weber
Interactions Between Bacterial Carbon Monoxide And Hydrogen Consumption And Plant Development On Recent Volcanic Deposits, Gary M. King, Carolyn F. Weber
Faculty Publications
Patterns of microbial colonization and interactions between microbial processes and vascular plants on volcanic deposits have received little attention. Previous reports have shown that atmospheric CO and hydrogen contribute significantly to microbial metabolism on Kilauea volcano (Hawaii) deposits with varied ages and successional development. Relationships between CO oxidation and plant communities were not clear, however, since deposit age and vegetation status covaried. To determine plant-microbe interactions in deposits of uniform ages, CO and hydrogen dynamics have been assayed for unvegetated tephra on a 1959 deposit at Puu Puai (PP-bare), at the edge of tree islands within the PP deposit (PP-edge) …

Cellular Uptake And Lysosomal Delivery Of Galactocerebrosidase Tagged With The Hiv Tat Protein Transduction Domain, Xian Yang Zhang, Annie Dinh, James Cronin, Su Chen Li, Jakob Reiser
Faculty Publications
A number of studies have shown that a short peptide, the protein transduction domain (PTD) derived from the HIV-1 Tat protein (Tat-PTD) improved cellular uptake in vitro and distribution in vivo of recombinant proteins bearing such PTDs when administered systemically. To investigate the effects of Tat-PTD addition on the subcellular localization of the lysosomal enzyme galactocerebrosidase (GALC, EC 3.2.2.46) and with a view towards designing improved therapeutic strategies for Krabbe disease (globoid cell leukodystrophy), mouse GALC was tagged C-terminally with the Tat-PTD. Compared with unmodified GALC, GALC bearing a Tat-PTD, a myc epitope and 6 consecutive His residues [GALC-TMH (Tat-PTD, …
Composites Comprising Cholesterol And Carboxymethyl Cellulose, Vuk Uskoković
Composites Comprising Cholesterol And Carboxymethyl Cellulose, Vuk Uskoković
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Whereby cholesterol presents one of the major fatty substances in human body, carboxymethyl cellulose is a water-soluble derivative of cellulose, the most abundant dietary fiber. Whereas on one hand in vivo precipitation of cholesterol is the major cause of atherosclerosis, dietary fibers are on the other hand known for their ability to clean the fatty plaque deposited on intestinal pathways, and prevent its build-up in other critical areas within the organism. In this work, a method for the preparation of a composite material comprising cholesterol and carboxymethyl cellulose from 1-hexanol/water biphase mixtures is reported. Specificity of the interaction between the …
Gear-Specific Population Demographics Of Channel Catfish In A Large Midwestern River, Robert E. Colombo, Quinton E. Phelps, James E. Garvey, Roy C. Heidinger, Tom Stefanavage
Gear-Specific Population Demographics Of Channel Catfish In A Large Midwestern River, Robert E. Colombo, Quinton E. Phelps, James E. Garvey, Roy C. Heidinger, Tom Stefanavage
Publications
Various gear types have been used to sample populations of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus in lotic systems. However, these gears produce different population characteristics (i.e., recruitment, growth, and mortality). We compared the population demographics of channel catfish in the Wabash River, Indiana, sampled with baited 25- and 32-mm-bar mesh hoop nets and three-phase alternating current (AC) electrofishing. Based on catch per unit effort, the relative abundance of channel catfish sampled with 32-mm hoop nets was lower than that of fish sampled with 25-mm hoop nets and AC electrofishing. Each gear type also resulted in a different length frequency, mean length …
Forensic Science, Wrongful Convictions, And American Prosecutor Discretion, Dennis J. Stevens
Forensic Science, Wrongful Convictions, And American Prosecutor Discretion, Dennis J. Stevens
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
A hot controversy exists about the reliability of forensic science as reported by prime-time drama television series in bringing violent criminals to justice. This exploratory research will show that neither forensics or its fictionalised (CSI Effect) accounts, nor substantial evidence secured by police investigators, shape prosecutor decisions to charge a suspect with a crime, which can often result in freeing guilty suspects and convicting innocent individuals. In the summer of 2006, 444 American prosecutors responded to a survey. The findings reveal that judges, juries, and defence lawyers are influenced more by prime-time American drama forensic accounts than by the substantial …

Bifidobacteria In Feces And Environmental Waters, Regina Lamendella, Jorge W. Santo Domingo, Catherine Kelty, Daniel B. Oerther
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Bifidobacteria have been recommended as potential indicators of human fecal pollution in surface waters even though very little is known about their presence in nonhuman fecal sources. The objective of this research was to shed light on the occurrence and molecular diversity of this fecal indicator group in different animals and environmental waters. Genus- and species-specific 16S rRNA gene PCR assays were used to study the presence of bifidobacteria among 269 fecal DNA extracts from 32 different animals. Twelve samples from three wastewater treatment plants and 34 water samples from two fecally impacted watersheds were also tested. The species-specific assays …

A Least Bad Approach For Interpreting Esa Stealth Provisions, Madeline June Kass
A Least Bad Approach For Interpreting Esa Stealth Provisions, Madeline June Kass
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
Scholars have come to recognize the existence of certain stealthlike provisions neatly tucked within the text of the federal Endangered Species Act ("ESA"). At the time of enactment, these provisions-if not invisible to Congress-appeared at most innocuous or insignificant. As originally written, section 7 of the ESA constitutes one such stealth provision. Inconspicuously titled "Interagency cooperation,"1 the provision seemed little more than a humble procedural hoop to agency action. Judicial statutory interpretation, however, clarified that this seemingly docile procedural requirement in fact contained a formidable substantive mandate of the Act. A second stealth provision resides in section 8a of the …

Red Light, Green Light: Assessing The Stop And Go In The Advancement Of Women In The Legal And Business Sectors, Megan Erb
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
The purpose of this note is to identify the problems professional women have in building a career while caring for a family, and to provide the basis for creating a solution. Part I of this note addresses the various types of problems that force women out of the workplace, as well as the difficulties women have in reentering the job market. Part II of this note compares the alternative work schedules offered in the legal and business communities. Part III focuses on the success the business firms have had, with the help of business schools, in finding a practical solution …
Alcohol Consumption: The Good, The Bad, And The Indifferent, Maria Pontes Ferreira, Darryn Willoughby
Alcohol Consumption: The Good, The Bad, And The Indifferent, Maria Pontes Ferreira, Darryn Willoughby
Nutrition and Food Science Faculty Research Publications
Dietary ethanol (alcohol) is the most widely consumed drug worldwide. High levels of mortality, morbidity, and social malaise are associated with abuse of alcohol, and increasing numbers of women and youth are abusing alcohol. However, strong epidemiological data demonstrate a U- or J-shaped relationship between volume of alcohol consumed and all-cause mortality or disease burden. Moderate alcohol consumption is associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality and disease burden than are abstinence and immoderate drinking. A brief review of the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of ethanol is provided with a discussion of the impact of gender differences. Potential …

Depression In Parkinson's Disease: Health Risks, Etiology, And Treatment Options, Pasquale G. Frisina, Joan C. Borod, Nancy S. Foldi, Harriet R. Tenenbaum
Publications and Research
Depression is found in about 30%-40% of all patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), but only a small percentage (about 20%) receive treatment. As a consequence, many PD patients suffer with reduced health-related quality of life. To address quality of life in depressed PD patients, we reviewed the literature on the health correlates of depression in PD (eg, cognitive function), etiology of depression in PD, and treatment options (ie, antidepressants, electroconvulsive therapy, and psychotherapy). The current review is unique in its focus on psychosocial aspects, as well as neuropathological factors, of depression in PD. Overall, we conclude that neurochemical (eg, serotonin) …
Organization And Instabilities Of Entangled Active Polar Filaments, Tanniemola B. Liverpool, M. Cristina Marchetti
Organization And Instabilities Of Entangled Active Polar Filaments, Tanniemola B. Liverpool, M. Cristina Marchetti
Physics - All Scholarship
We study the dynamics of an entangled, isotropic solution of polar filaments coupled by molecular motors which generate relative motion of the filaments in two and three dimensions. We investigate the stability of the homogeneous state for constant motor concentration taking into account excluded volume and entanglement. At low filament density the system develops a density instability, while at high filament density entanglement effects drive the instability of orientational fluctuations.
Networks Of Fairness Review In Corporate Law, Reza Dibadj
Networks Of Fairness Review In Corporate Law, Reza Dibadj
San Diego Law Review
The fairness doctrine in corporate law is rhetorically glorious. Courts speak of scrutinizing transactions tainted by self-dealing for entire fairness, intrinsic fairness, and even inherent fairness. In theory, the doctrine should be a boon to shareholder-plaintiffs, especially as contrasted with corporate law's usual tendency to defer to the business judgment of corporate insiders. But in cases where courts discuss the fairness doctrine, how often have plaintiffs actually won? Are their meaningful differences in the three articulations of the doctrine, or are the adjectives fancy verbiage? Are some fairness cases more important than others in promulgating doctrine? While anecdotes abound, precious …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Morphometric studies of five allopatric parasitoid populations (genus Psyttalia Walker) from coffee plantations in Cameroon (Nkolbisson), Ghana (Tafo) and Kenya (Rurima, Ruiru and Shimba Hills) and one non-coffee population (from Muhaka, Kenya) were compared with individuals of Psyttalia concolor (Szépligeti), a species released in several biological control programmes in the Mediterranean Region since the 20th Century. Analyses of wing vein measurements showed the second submarginal cell of the fore wing and its adjoining veins had the heaviest principal component weights and served as the main contributing variables in the diagnostic differentiation of the populations. Two populations (Rurima and Ruiru) were …
The Cross-Bridge Cycle And Skeletal Muscle Fatigue, Robert H. Fitts
The Cross-Bridge Cycle And Skeletal Muscle Fatigue, Robert H. Fitts
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
The functional correlates of fatigue observed in both animals and humans during exercise include a decline in peak force (P0), maximal velocity, and peak power. Establishing the extent to which these deleterious functional changes result from direct effects on the myofilaments is facilitated through understanding the molecular mechanisms of the cross-bridge cycle. With actin-myosin binding, the cross-bridge transitions from a weakly bound low-force state to a strongly bound high-force state. Low pH reduces the number of high-force cross bridges in fast fibers, and the force per cross bridge in both fast and slow fibers. The former is thought …
Oppositional Defiant Disorder And Aggression In A Young Man With Mental Retardation: Long-Term Treatment In A Community-Based Setting, Robert A. Fox, Casey A. Holtz, Amber L. Barcelona
Oppositional Defiant Disorder And Aggression In A Young Man With Mental Retardation: Long-Term Treatment In A Community-Based Setting, Robert A. Fox, Casey A. Holtz, Amber L. Barcelona
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
A longitudinal, intensive treatment program is described that was implemented over an 8-year period in a community-based setting for a young man with mental retardation and oppositional defiant disorder with severe physical aggression. The development of this disorder and its systematic treatment are described, with new components added based on improvement in the individual’s behavior. The individual made steady progress and has maintained good behavioral stability for the final three years of the treatment program. This paper highlights the inherent difficulties of applying empirically validated treatment strategies in community-based settings.

Potential For Ultrafast Dynamic Chemical Imaging With Few-Cycle Infrared Lasers, Toru Morishita, Anh-Thu Le, Zhangjin Chen, C. D. Lin
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We studied the photoelectron spectra generated by an intense few cycle infrared laser pulse. By focusing on the angular distributions of the back rescattered high energy photoelectrons, we show that accurate differential elastic scattering cross-sections of the target ion by free electrons can be extracted. Since the incident direction and the energy of the free electrons can be easily changed by manipulating the laser's polarization, intensity and wavelength, these extracted elastic scattering cross-sections, in combination with more advanced inversion algorithms, may be used to reconstruct the effective single-scattering potential of the molecule, thus opening up the possibility of using few-cycle …

The 2007 field meeting of the North American Dipterists Society (NADS) was held August 13–16 in southwestern New Mexico, centered in Silver City (at Western New Mexico University), and the surrounding Gila National Forest. This was the first NADS meeting that I have been able to attend, and I think I can speak for all in saying it was enjoyable, productive, and interesting; an overall success. A more detailed account and evaluation of this meeting is available in the 2007 Fly Times article (O’Hara 2007).
