Distinguishing adenoid cystic carcinoma from polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma of the salivary glands is important for their management. We studied the expression of several myoepithelial and basal/stem cell markers (smooth muscle actin, calponin, smooth muscle myosin heavy chain, metallothionein, maspin, and p63) by immunohistochemistry in 23 adenoid cystic carcinoma and 24 polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma, to identify the most useful marker or combination of markers that may help their diagnoses. The results were analyzed using hierarchical cluster analysis and χ2 test for trend. We noted diffuse expression of smooth muscle actin in 20 adenoid cystic carcinoma vs one polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma …

The role of distance education is shifting. Traditionally distance education was limited in the number of people served because of production, reproduction, and distribution costs. Today, while it still costs the university time and money to produce a course, technology has made it such that reproduction costs are almost non-existent. This shift has significant implications, and allows distance educators to play an important role in the fulfillment of the promise of the right to universal education. At little or no cost, universities can make their content available to millions. This content has the potential to substantially improve the quality of …

Emergent Decision-Making In Biological Signal Transduction Networks, Tomáš Helikar, Jack Heidel, Jim A. Rogers, Jimmy Rogers Feb 2008

Emergent Decision-Making In Biological Signal Transduction Networks, Tomáš Helikar, Jack Heidel, Jim A. Rogers, Jimmy Rogers

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The complexity of biochemical intracellular signal transduction networks has led to speculation that the high degree of interconnectivity that exists in these networks transforms them into an information processing network. To test this hypothesis directly, a large scale model was created with the logical mechanism of each node described completely to allow simulation and dynamical analysis. Exposing the network to tens of thousands of random combinations of inputs and analyzing the combined dynamics of multiple outputs revealed a robust system capable of clustering widely varying input combinations into equivalence classes of biologically relevant cellular responses. This capability was nontrivial in …

Carbon-based materials are considered to be promising materials as implants because of their unique mechanical and biocompatibility properties. The current paper investigates the use of carbon-based materials as a functional interface for tissue scaffolds and medical implants. Three basic parameters were explored such as graphene orientation, crystallinity and surface interaction. To explore the effect of the orientation, samples were made with and without a preferred carbon orientation. Conversely, the crystallinity was studied using graphitic and carbonaceous matrices. Fluorescent, confocal and environmental scanning microscopy was used to visualize cell response. The cell attachment, proliferation and elongation were prevalent on the unidirectional …

Seeking A Seat At The Table: Has Law Left Environmental Ethics Behind As It Embraces Bioethics?, Heidi Gorovitz Robertson Feb 2008

Seeking A Seat At The Table: Has Law Left Environmental Ethics Behind As It Embraces Bioethics?, Heidi Gorovitz Robertson

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

Long before its crystallization as an academic discipline in the 1960s and '70s, bioethics was evolving from isolated ideas and theories into a coherent and practical field. Today, people train in academic bioethics programs and seek careers as bioethicists. Hospitals, universities, government organizations, and corporations hire bioethicists, where they use their training to help make decisions regarding life or death issues in science and medicine. Although there is controversy over the extent and content of the influence they exert there, bioethicists have achieved a seat at the decision-making table.

Environmental ethics also emerged in the 1960s and'70s, beginning most notably …

So Many Zebras, So Little Time: Ecological Models And Counterinsurgency Operations, Mark D. Drapeau, Peyton C. Hurley, Robert E. Armstrong

Defense Horizons

This paper explores how ecological and biological models can help inform the understanding of counterinsurgency operations and irregular conflict. Drawing parallels between predator-prey dynamics in nature and interactions between insurgent and counterinsurgent forces, the authors look at how ecological frameworks may provide analytical insight into complex adaptive behaviors, force relationships, and operational environments. While ecological models cannot fully explain the complexity of warfare, they can offer useful conceptual tools for analyzing insurgency dynamics, adaptation, and strategic interaction in irregular warfare environments.

Species of Perkinsus are responsible for high mortalities of bivalve molluscs world-wide. Techniques to accurately estimate parasites in tissues are required to improve understanding of perkinsosis. This study quantifies the number and tissue distribution of Perkinsus marinus in Crassostrea virginica by modern stereology and immunohistochemistry. Mean total number of trophozoites were (mean ± SE) 11.80 ± 3.91 million and 11.55 ± 3.88 million for the optical disector and optical fractionator methods, respectively. The mean empirical error between both stereological approaches was 3.8 ± 1.0%. Trophozoites were detected intracellularly in the following tissues: intestine (30.1%), Leydig tissue (21.3%), hemocytes (14.9%), digestive …

Effects Of Cyclic Hypoxia On Gene Expression And Reproduction In A Grass Shrimp, Palaemonetes Pugio, Nancy J. Brown-Peterson, C. Steve Manning, Vishal Patel, Nancy D. Denslow, Marius Brouwer

Faculty Publications

Cyclic changes in dissolved oxygen occur naturally in shallow estuarine systems, yet little is known about the adaptations and responses of estuarine organisms to cyclic hypoxia. Here we examine the responses of Palaemonetes pugio, a species of grass shrimp, to cyclic hypoxia (1.5-8 mg/l dissolved oxygen; 4.20-22.42 kPa) at both the molecular and organismal levels. We measured alterations in gene expression in hepatopancreas tissue of female grass shrimp using custom cDNA macroarrays. After short-term (3-d) exposure to cyclic hypoxia, mitochondrial manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) was upregulated and 70-kd heat shock proteins (HSP70) were downregulated. After 7-d exposure, nuclear genes encoding …

Biology Faculty Articles

Background

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) naturally infects multiple species of cat and is related to human immunodeficiency virus in humans. FIV infection causes AIDS-like disease and mortality in the domestic cat (Felis catus) and serves as a natural model for HIV infection in humans. In African lions (Panthera leo) and other exotic felid species, disease etiology introduced by FIV infection are less clear, but recent studies indicate that FIV causes moderate to severe CD4 depletion.

Results

In this study, comparative genomic methods are used to evaluate the full proviral genome of two geographically distinct FIV subtypes …

Genetic Characterization Of Feline Leukemia Virus From Florida Panthers, Meredith Brown, Mark W. Cunningham, Alfred L. Roca, Jennifer L. Troyer, Warren E. Johnson, Stephen J. O'Brien

Biology Faculty Articles

From 2002 through 2005, an outbreak of feline leukemia virus (FeLV) occurred in Florida panthers (Puma concolor coryi). Clinical signs included lymphadenopathy, anemia, septicemia, and weight loss; 5 panthers died. Not associated with FeLV outcome were the genetic heritage of the panthers (pure Florida vs. Texas/Florida crosses) and co-infection with feline immunodeficiency virus. Genetic analysis of panther FeLV, designated FeLV-Pco, determined that the outbreak likely came from 1 cross-species transmission from a domestic cat. The FeLV-Pco virus was closely related to the domestic cat exogenous FeLV-A subgroup in lacking recombinant segments derived from endogenous FeLV. FeLV-Pco sequences were …

Dairy Culture: Industry, Nature And Liminality In The Eighteenth-Century English Ornamental Dairy, Ashlee Whitaker Feb 2008

Dairy Culture: Industry, Nature And Liminality In The Eighteenth-Century English Ornamental Dairy, Ashlee Whitaker

Theses and Dissertations

The vogue for installing dairies, often termed "fancy" or "polite" dairies, within the gardens of wealthy English estates arose during the latter half of the eighteenth century. These polite dairies were functional spaces in which aristocratic women engaged, to varying degrees, in bucolic tasks of skimming milk, churning and molding butter, and preparing creams. As dairy work became a mode of genteel activity, dairies were constructed and renovated in the stylish architectural modes of the day and expanded to serve as spaces of leisure and recreation. Dairies were often lavishly outfitted to create a delicate and clean atmosphere, a fancy …
