Effects Of Climate Change On Aquatic Invasive Species And Implications For Management And Research, Roxanne Thomas, Austin Kane, Environmental Law Institute, Britta G. Bierwagen
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Global change stressors, including climate change and variability and changes in land use, are major drivers of ecosystem alterations. Invasive species, which are non-native species that cause environmental or economic damages or human-health impacts, also contribute to ecosystem changes. The interactions between stressors and invasive species, although not well understood, may exacerbate the impacts of climate change on ecosystems, and likewise, climate change may enable further invasions. This report reviews available literature on climate-change effects on aquatic invasive species (AIS) and examines state-level AIS management activities. Data on management activities came from publicly available information, was analyzed with respect to …

Improving Predicted Distribution Models For Riverine Species: An Example From Nebraska, Scott P. Sowa, Gust Annis, Michael E. Morey, A. Garringer
Improving Predicted Distribution Models For Riverine Species: An Example From Nebraska, Scott P. Sowa, Gust Annis, Michael E. Morey, A. Garringer
United States Geological Survey: Publications
Modeling species distributions is in most instances, we believe, better if perceived as an exercise in modeling spatial patterns in habitat conditions. This perspective forces the modeler to think about factors and processes that influence local habitat and also to account for as many of these factors as possible in the modeling process. Local habitat conditions in riverine ecosystems (for example, pH, temperature, turbidity, permanence of flow, depths, velocities, substrate, cover, primary production, etc.) are influenced by a wide array of factors and processes operating at multiple spatial and temporal scales (Matthews 1998; Fausch et al. 2002). However, of primary …

N-Acetyl-B-D-Glucosaminidase And Inflammatory Response After Cardiopulmonary Bypass, Perwaiz Iqbal, Hasanat M Sharif, Naseema Mehboobali, Farzana A Yousuf, Abrar H Khan, Frank W Sellke
Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
OBJECTIVE: To determine the changes in activity of plasma N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase, a marker for inflammation as well as renal, pulmonary and cardiac damage and proinflammatory cytokines in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting and find out the relationship between their plasma levels with clinical outcome of patients.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: The Aga Khan University, Karachi, from January to June 2003.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) activity and concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-alpha of (TNFalpha), interleukin 6 (IL-6), interleukin 8 (IL8) and granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) were monitored in plasma samples of 12 angina patients …

America's Health Insurance Crisis - Talking Points, Derek Wilmott

This last documentary by Peter Jennings aims the lens on the country’s health insurance system. Why is there a growing number of uninsured in this country? Why do people, who can afford the ever-increasing prices, cannot get insurance? Peter Jennings finds that spiraling costs and the growing number of uninsured are all part of a health insurance system in a state of crisis.

Parent-Child Relations And Peer Associations As Mediators Of The Family Structure-Substance Use Relationship, Lizabeth A. Crawford, Katherine B. Novak
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Using data from the National Education Longitudinal Survey of 1988, the authors assess the extent to which adolescents’ levels of parental attachment and opportunities for participating in delinquent activities mediate the family structure–substance use relationship. A series of hierarchical regressions supported the hypotheses that high levels of substance use among adolescents residing with stepfamilies would be explained by low parental attachment, whereas heightened opportunities for participating in deviant activities would account for the substance use behaviors of individuals living in single-parent households. More generally, the findings suggest that family structure has a moderate effect on youth substance use; that parental …

In this letter, we demonstrate a gate-all-around single-wall carbon nanotube field-effect transistor. This is the first successful experimental implementation of an off-chip gate and gate-dielectric assembly with subsequent deposition on a suitable substrate. The fabrication process and device measurements are discussed in the letter. We also argue in how far charges in the gate oxide are responsible for the observed nonideal device performance.

OBJECTIVE-We examined the relationship between the expression of thrombospondin (TSP)1, an antiangiogenic factor and regulator of transforming growth factor-β activity, obesity, adipose inflammation, and insulin resistance.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS-TSP1 gene expression was quantified in subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) of 86 nondiabetic subjects covering a wide range of BMI and insulin sensitivity, from visceral adipose (VAT) and SAT from 14 surgical patients and from 38 subjects with impaired glucose tolerance randomized to receive either pioglitazone or metformin for 10 weeks. An adipocyte culture system was also used to assess the effects of pioglitazone and coculture with macrophages on …

P. parvum Carter is a haptophyte that occurs world wide in both fresh and brackish waters. Though P. parvum blooms occur world wide under a variety of environmental conditions, it occurs during the cooler months of the year in Texas. Various treatment combinations of temperatures, salinity and limiting nutrients were used to test the hypothesis that the interaction of these factors would affect the abundance and toxicity of P. parvum. In addition to testing various above mentioned factors and their interactions, P. parvum was grown in mixed species cultures with major competitors from a natural lake community (Lake Whitney) to …
